Chairman’s charity event marks Battle of Britain
The new Chairman of East
Northamptonshire Council is marking the
75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain
with an evening of food, music and
dancing.
Councillor Marika Hillson invites
you to join her on Saturday 11th July at
Irthlingborough’s Frontier Centre for musical
entertainment and supper, to raise money for
her two chosen charities. Funds raised during
her civic year will be shared between the Royal
British Legion – in memory of Brian Walker
(former Chairman of Finedon, Irthlingborough
and District RBL) and Skylark Children’s
Ward at Kettering General Hospital.
Councillor Hillson said: “This will be a
very special event with a menu that’s hard
to resist. For starters we’ll have well-known
military anthems played by the fabulous
Thrapston Town Brass Band, followed by a
fish and chip supper from Vince’s Fish Bar.
This will be washed down with our talented
Irthlingborough based Michelle Randles
dancers who will perform to classic Glenn
Miller tunes. For dessert we will finish with a
glorious singsong of popular wartime hits. As
a tasty side dish we will have a well-known
local artist, Keith Hill, and a historic WWII
exhibition.
“Flag waving, loud singing and having a
good time will be compulsory on the night so
join us for a fabulous time to raise funds for
RAF WW2 aircraft
equipment for the Skylark Children’s Ward
and for the Royal British Legion in memory of
Brian Walker. I look forward to seeing you all
there.”
The evening also includes a licensed bar
and a raffle draw.
Tickets are £20 per person. The dress code

A very good friend of mine has a family
reunion this year. This is to celebrate
a whole raft of 18th, 21st and 50th
birthdays as well as special wedding
anniversaries. Reunions are great places
to ask those burning questions: Who was
it that Great Aunt Nell married? What
was Uncle Reg’s occupation during
the last war? When did cousin Dave
emigrate?
When I was small, we used to trek from
Hertfordshire down to Surrey once a year to
meet up with cousins, great aunts and uncles
and other motley relatives in order to catch
up with family happenings.
If you do not have family reunions as such,
organising visits and asking nosy questions
is the way to go. Get your relatives talking
about what life was like when they were
young. Do they remember any special events
such as coronations, for instance?
Sometimes, it just takes a couple of
questions to get relatives reminiscing and
from there you will have a very good base
for building your family tree. Don’t forget to

that the facts did not quite fit. However, it
did give me a good starting point.
If you have started your family history, see
if you can set it out into a tree so that people
can see who was related to whom – it might
also trigger memories. You may find that
people lived in different towns or villages in
addition to where you thought, or you might
get an insight into their schooldays – very
different to nowadays!
Oh yes – before you meet up, it is also
worth asking if there are any old photographs
that you could see that have been squirrelled
away. Then, as you sit over a cup of tea/glass
of wine, the pictures will evoke a time gone
by and help those recollections take on more
meaning.

Manor School awarded Sport England
grant to develop Go Ride cycling club
Sport England has awarded Manor
Learning Trust a grant of just under
£10,000 towards the project costs of a new
cycling Go Ride Club at Manor School
Sports College, Raunds.
The application to Sport England was part
of a wider plan to develop cycling provision at
the school, building on the existing Bikeability
scheme hosted by Manor School for the
Wellingborough and East Northants District.
The project aims to increase participation in
cycling by running a Go Ride School Coaching
programme for Years 7–12, with a particular
focus on encouraging girls. Three members
of staff have already completed a Cycling for
Schools training course to lead the development
of cycling in the curriculum.
School Sport Manager Hannah Hore, who
led on the application to Sport England said:
“It is brilliant news for Manor School. Cycling
in Northamptonshire has really taken off
since London 2012 and the Women’s Tour
of Britain last year raised the profile of the
sport further locally. I’m looking forward to
seeing the development of the Go Ride Club
and maximising a unique opportunity for all
students at Manor and hopefully surrounding
schools.”
Manor School will also host the District
School Games Cycling Competition on
Tuesday 9th June for boys and girls in Year 7.
Young leaders studying GCSE PE at Manor
School have already been trained to support
the delivery of the competition. In addition, a
team from Manor School has been invited to
take part in the ‘Queen of the Sprints Race’ for
schools, to mark the Women’s Tour of Britain
coming to Kettering on Friday 19th June.
The Sport England Award from the Small
Grants programme, which is Lottery funded,
will support the cost of purchasing 25 mountain
bikes, helmets and a trailer to transport bikes.
Initial coaching fees and costs for a teacher or
coach to complete the British Cycling Level 2
Coaching Award have also been included in
overall project costs.
School Principal Linda Brooks said: “I am
delighted that Manor School is at the forefront
of this new cycling initiative. I look forward
to the programme increasing even further our
sports participation rates.”

Join the Chicken Challenge to halve cases of campylobacter poisoning
Let’s hear it for the humble chicken. It’s a healthy and
versatile food and a staple of Sunday lunches and
barbecues on sunny afternoons.
But there’s one thing not to love about it. Chicken can
cause food poisoning. The FSA estimates that about 280,000
cases of food poisoning a year can be traced to campylobacter
– a germ found mostly on raw chicken. You can’t see it, smell
it or even taste it on food, but if it affects you, you won’t
forget it. At its worst, campylobacter can kill or paralyse you.
Campylobacter food poisoning usually develops a few days
after eating contaminated food and leads to symptoms that
include abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea and, sometimes,
vomiting. Some can have lasting effects, for example irritable
bowel syndrome, reactive arthritis and in rare cases Guillain-
Barré syndrome – a serious condition of the nervous system.
The FSA wants to cut the number of cases of
campylobacter poisoning in half by the end of 2015. It could
mean that over 100,000 fewer people will get sick next year.
If everyone does their bit, including industry and consumers
this can happen. Pledging to take the Chicken Challenge and
to do at least one thing to help keep tummies safe and
healthy will make a huge difference in helping to achieve this
goal.
Nina Purcell, FSA Director says: “It’s clear that we all love
chicken, we just need to take the time and be even more
committed to ensuring we do the little things in the kitchen
to keep our loved ones safe.”
Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, Steven North,
says: “Food safety involves everybody in the food chain. If we
all take responsibility for ensuring we follow the simple rules,
then we can all enjoy a safe and delicious dinner.”
The FSA is asking you to step up to the plate and promise
to:
•Bag and store raw chicken separately from other food,
covered and chilled on the bottom shelf of the fridge
•Not to wash raw chicken as it splashes germs
•Wash everything that’s touched raw chicken in soap and
hot water – your hands and utensils
•Check chicken is cooked properly – no pink meat,
steaming hot and the juices run clear

Historic Rushden almshouses transformed
Four historic almshouses
dating back to 1883 in
the heart of Rushden
have been brought back
into use and refurbished
to make them fit for

East Northamptonshire

last year, the refurbishment
has transformed the four
former bedsits into two
spacious one-bedroom
bungalows that are specially
equipped for older people.
Located on Wellingborough

The 4th annual Funfest was a roaring
success again this year with the arena at
Rushden & Higham Rugby Club buzzing
with excitement during the races.
Twelve teams took part, competing for first
place and the coveted winner’s trophy
presented by Lord Spencer.
A sunny but blustery day did not perturb
the teams that took part in an assortment of
games ensuring that all of the participants
had great fun whilst getting very wet! This
year the overall winners were Wykes
Warriors, representing Wykes Engineering.
In addition to the races, there were
children’s amusements, craft stalls, a licensed
bar, barbecue and inflatables to keep all the
family entertained.
The event is organised by the Rushden
Higham Rotary Club, Rushden Round Table
and Cynthia Spencer Hospice to raise money
for the hospice and local charities. This year’s
event is expected to have raised a record
£10,000. Judy Webb, Secretary of the
Rushden Higham Rotary Club is hopeful that
the event will continue to be a success in the

Resident fined hundreds for fly-tipping
A Ringstead resident was fined nearly £600 at Northampton
Magistrates Court recently for fly-tipping in East
Northamptonshire.
The man pleaded guilty to the offence of dumping three sacks of
waste on the roadside between Woodford Mill and Great
Addington. The Magistrate said he had committed a serious offence
which caused considerable cost to the taxpayer and ordered him to
pay £595 – made up of a £75 fine, costs of £500 and a £20 victim
surcharge.
Steven North, Leader of East Northamptonshire Council said:
“We are pleased with this successful prosecution and hope it shows
how seriously we take fly-tipping in East Northants. We will continue
to take action against individuals found to be illegally dumping
rubbish in our countryside and on our streets. We think this sends
out a strong message that this kind of behaviour will simply not be
tolerated.”

Rushden Academy’s Team Phoenix invited
to conference at the House of Commons
It’s not every day that an
invitation to the House
of Commons is received
but for an inspiring group
of students at Rushden
Academy, an Education
Fellowship academy, this
has just become a reality.
Team Phoenix, comprising
seven of its students aged 12 to
15 years, are the only students
in the country who have been
invited to attend the National
Food Poverty Conference on
18th June in recognition of the
extraordinary volunteering
they do.
Jo Steele, Admin Officer
at Rushden Academy who
was the original inspiration
for Team Phoenix, said:
“Delegates at The National
Food Poverty conference will
be part of a select few who
will help identify strategies
to combat food poverty

local charity Phoenix Resource
Centre in Wellingborough.
“Each week between them
they sort through an average
of two tonnes of food which
is enough to feed a family of
four for a year. Donated by
the distribution centres of
supermarkets, this usable and
in date food would otherwise
have ended up in landfill
because it was surplus to
requirements, branding on
packaging had changed, it had
damaged outer packaging and
casing, or tins and boxes are
dented or ripped.
“The food, once sorted,
is given to local food
banks, night shelters and
organisations that provide
lunches for the elderly and
sick. It’s also made into parcels
for vulnerable and needy
members of the Rushden local
community. Energy drinks
and food are also supplied to
Northamptonshire Police,
so they can give them to
homeless young adults living
on the county’s streets.”
Team Phoenix is getting
to the conference thanks to
the generous sponsorship of

sector catering specialist who
are suppliers to The Education
Fellowship academies in
Northamptonshire. Taylor
Shaw are paying for the
transport and tickets for the
seven students to attend this
important conference. The
two staff supporting the team

Education Fellowship.

Empty homes given a new lease of life
Empty homes that were once a blight on
the streets of East Northamptonshire have
been given a new lease of life thanks to
East Northamptonshire Council, with
support from a local housing association.
Since March 2011, 196 homes in East
Northamptonshire have been transformed,
regenerating local areas and providing much
needed extra affordable homes for those in
housing need.
Paul Palmer, Empty Homes Officer for East
Northamptonshire Council, Corby Borough
Council and Malvern Hills District Council,
is responsible for identifying empty properties
and working with owners to return them to
use.
He said: “Most empty homes are privately
owned and when they fall into disrepair, the
owner often lacks the funds or the skills to
repair and manage the property. By talking to
the owner, we can help set up an action plan
for restoring the property and establish ways in
which it can be funded.
“For example, we identified an empty
home on St Martins Close in Rushden. We
approached the owner and offered them the
chance to work with us. They were really
keen and I explained that grant funding

David Wilkinson, as part of a larger
project, has created a computerised
simulation of a postwar journey from
Tansor to Barnwell station, including a
stop at Oundle station. Using photos,
maps, GPS and various documents he
has produced a remarkable experience
of travelling on the steam engine in the
period of steam.
Details of the countryside and
landmarks are easily recognisable, such as
the Oundle church spire, the river and the
gasometers (only the cattle and sheep are
not original).
This simulation enables visitors to travel

Paul explained plans for the future of The
Empty Homes project: “It’s great to see so
much good progress being made on empty
properties but we acknowledge that much
remains to be done and we will continue to
work with property owners and help them
recreate much needed homes.
“Each property brought back into use
qualifies for New Homes Bonus funding
– £6,000 per property based on a Band D
average rating. So with the 196 properties
returned to use in East Northamptonshire,
the district has received £1.1m of funding.
We’ve spent £40,000 over four years, making
the project a success, so we feel this is a good
return on the investment.
“Having worked successfully with willing
owners, we are now turning attention to the
more problematic cases, and will be looking at
our range of enforcement tools for the more
long-term empties in poor condition with
reluctant owners.”
The Paradox of H E Bates
A special meeting of the
H E Bates Discussion
Group was held at the
end of April, when the
group’s invited guest was
Professor Dean Baldwin
from the USA.
Professor Baldwin is the
author of a biography of H E
Bates written in the 1980s,
and his previous research in
the UK has given him an indepth knowledge of H E, his
characters and the locations
where a lot of the novels
were based.
Professor Baldwin was
introduced by the Mayor,
Councillor Richard Lewis,
who was an invited guest
with the Town Clerk, Viv
Prodger. The talk given
by Professor Baldwin was
entitled ‘The Paradox of H
E Bates’, and he described
H E’s struggle to support
his family in the early
years of his writing and
the novels based locally
– Love for Lydia based
around Rushden Hall;
Spella Ho based around
Knuston Hall; and The
Poacher written with help
of his grandfather, George
Lucas, and dedicated to
a friend, Sam Smith, who
lived in Prospect Avenue.
H E presented Smith with
a signed copy of every book
he had published – which
were bought, after Sam’s
passing, by Peter Eades,
another biographer.
Professor Baldwin drew
comparisons between
Bates and some of his
contemporaries, such as T S
Eliot and Aldous Huxley.
A vote of thanks
was given by Bates’s
granddaughter, Victoria
Wicks.
Another visitor, Neil
Anderson from Yorkshire,
together with one of the
Group’s founders, Eric
Fowell, organised a display
of ‘Bates Ephemera’ – photos
etc with connections to the
author.
Mr and Mrs Baldwin, with
the Group Chair Mrs Ann
Harris, were given a tour of
the Hall and the American
guests were presented with
a facsimile of a painting by
Charles Leaver portraying
Rushden in 1875, signed by
all members present.

No dog lead leads to hefty fine
The challenge is simple and designed

Keeping things simple, it can be a
sociable time to share the wildness with
family, friends and colleagues; to list/
choose favourite wild things for one
second, one minute, or one hour a day –
your daily bit of wildness.

A dog owner from Higham Ferrers who
repeatedly breached the dogs on leads
order at Vine Hill recreation ground
has received a £420 fine for her latest
violation.
The woman from Kimbolton Road,
Higham Ferrers has already received a
verbal warning and three Fixed Penalty
Notices for not having her dogs on leads at
the park and most recently was caught by
the East Northamptonshire Council Dog
Warden and a PCSO for the same offence
in the same location.
When approached by the two officers,
she was heard to say: “Here we go again.
Don’t bother giving me the ticket; you
know where I live, just put it through my
door.” She then left the park.
This latest offence earned the dog
owner a court appearance at Northampton
Magistrates where she pleaded guilty, was
convicted and received a fine of £150, costs
of £250 and a victim surcharge of £20.
Leader of East Northamptonshire
Council, Steven North, said: “It’s
unfortunate that continued breaches of the
law at this location have led to the council
having to take court action and a dog
walker has now received a criminal record.
These orders are in place so that everyone
can enjoy the recreation ground in comfort
and safety.”

the St Peter’s Church
Raunds fundraising
committee organised a
barbecue for a crowd of
local people in the vicarage
garden – kindly opened for
the occasion by the Vicar
Reverend Shena Bell.
The children were not
forgotten, as the vicar
had borrowed a whole
selection of toys from her
grandchildren for the young
visitors to play with, whilst
the grown ups chatted.
This was mainly a fun
event, but £150 was also
raised for the church
restoration fund which needs
over £1 million pounds for
urgently needed work.
The organisers of this
event would like to thank
local companies Lidl,
Waitrose, Asda, The Coop, and Iceland for their
generous donations.
The next event is St
Peter’s Flower Festival and
Art Exhibition on 13th and
14th June – entry is free, and
lunch and teas will be served
on both days – open from
10am–5pm on Saturday, and
12noon to 5pm on Sunday.
There is also a concert by
NN10 Community Voices on
the Sunday evening, tickets

upkeep of the church.

Barry Smith, a Royal Navy veteran with
10 years’ service behind him, was awarded
a Certificate of Appreciation recently by
the Rushden Branch of the Royal British
Legion for service to the Branch over many
years and particularly during the period
2005 to 2013 when he was the Branch
Secretary.
Barry, who was also once a member of the
Field Gun Display Team that used to participate
in the annual Military Tournament at Earls
Court was completely taken by surprise when
the award was announced.
Barry is still active in the military community
both as an RBL Branch Member and also
as the Rushden Branch of the Royal Navy
Associations’ Secretary. He is seen in the
middle of the picture with his Certificate of
Appreciation and “tightly held” bottle of single
malt Glenmorangie Whiskey, being presented
by Branch Chairman Paul Mills on the right
and left, former Branch Chairman Harry
Graham MBE.

Titchmarsh Village Fete this month
The Tithmarsh Village Fete will open
at 12noon on Saturday 13th June. Many
activities will be hosted in the arena
including maypole dancing, a fancy dress
competition, a pet show, folk dancing, a
dog agility show and children’s races. Then
the Flying Teddies will take to the air at
3.15pm (registration for entry closes at
3pm).
Thrapston Town Band and the Hargrave
Singers will also be performing in the church.
There will be many stalls to cater for all age
groups, with a beer tent, Pimm’s, BBQ, pizzas
and paninis for refreshment. A Grand Draw
will also be held, with many wonderful prizes on
offer. Entry is FREE with free parking and a free
programme.

Woodland Fun with the Oxlip Owlets
Owlets explore, get muddy, play with
sticks and have adventures! If you are
aged 3, 4 or 5, you can become an Oxlip
Owlet this summer in a ‘secret’ East
Northamptonshire woodland.

and create at Oxlip Wood,

The activities are designed
to be fun and exciting, but

Chess corner The last game of the Silver King
Northamptonshire League has now
been played with Rushden A taking on
Kettering A at home in League I.
Rushden A were severely depleted, with
three top players missing on the evening. This
meant that B team regulars Keith Bristow and
Phil Campbell had to step into the breach.
Rushden were heavily outgunned on the
bottom four boards, with an average grade
deficit of 21 points.
Alan Lewis played well to hold Jonny Martin
to a draw on board 2; things went less well on
the bottom three boards with Saj, Keith and
Phil being taken down by superior Kettering
firepower. This just left Hugh Murphy fighting
for a consolation win on board 1; this was a
tense game with Peter Jaszkiwskyj giving a
good account of himself. In the end Hugh’s
experience proved to be the decisive factor and
Peter resigned after 39 moves.
Kettering’s win now means that they have
pushed Chess Mates B into third place in
League I, with Chess Mates A taking the
honours after a magnificent campaign this
season with only one defeat. Rushden ended up
in fourth place just ahead of Corby. Kettering B
is now relegated, with their place being taken by
Rushden B next season.
This has proved to be a successful season for
Rushden. The A team only just missed out on a
place in the John Robinson Knockout Cup final

Kettering C began their season in East
Northants Tennis League Men’s Division
Two with two emphatic victories.
Their first match was played out at Thrapston
C in very difficult windy conditions, and it was
the Kettering side who adapted the better with
Adam Brown / Mihai Diac defeating Grant
Maly / Keith Stockley 6-0, 6-4 and Ed Frain /
Paul Milner 6-0, 6-2. Nicky Helbick / Dermot
Bailey provided strong support beating Frain /
Milner 6-3, 6-1 and halving 6-4, 3-6 with Maly /
Stockley.
A visit to Corby C proved to be a one-sided
affair. Chris Todd / Jamie Hills stepped down
from B team duties to aid the Kettering cause
and the Corby quartet were left well beaten,
though Gerry Lee / John Hanlon gave a resolute
performance against Diac / Helbick, just being
edged out 6-3, 6-3.
Corby C’s next match against Thrapston C
was a much closer affair. Lee / Hanlon halved
both rubbers, 6-4, 5-7 with Maly / Chris
Hutchinson and 6-3, 3-6 against Stockley /

Thrapston B made a fine start to their
campaign in their quest for a quick return to
Division One. Against their C team Phil Taylor /
Tom Roberts led the charge claiming all four sets,
6-0, 6-2 over Skelton / Duncan Williams and
6-3, 6-4 against Stockley / Julius Richards. Pete
Kirk / Hutchinson defeated Skelton / Williams
7-5, 6-0 but had to settle for a 7-1 success when
Stockley / Richards gained a 6-2, 0-6 half.

prospect of Rushden A playing Rushden B
at home and away! The club’s membership
has also strengthened over the last year with
an influx of new members at both junior and
senior level. This will undoubtedly lead to
more strength in depth with opportunities to
augment our league teams.

Fantastic win for Rushden
On Saturday 23rd May Rushden
Swimming Club competed in the Sadie
Murray Shield County Gala. The evening
event saw the club take on four other
county clubs, and finish in first place,
taking the Sadie Murray Shield home for
the first time since 2007.
The team of 18 swimmers – Megan
Rowthorn, Ashleigh Bales, Holly Moultrie,
Gracie Ridout, Andrew Clarke, Ryan ProttyGibbs, Lucy Cullen, Olivia Beasant, Dylan
Walton-Pratt, Bertie Malsher, Philipe Oram,
Lydia Pouncey, Maisie Lucas, Phoebe Snook,
Amber Bales, Jamie Hooks, Michael Clarke and
Nathan Jones, swam in 30 races taking nine first
places and gaining only one speeding ticket by
swimming faster than the time allowed. It was a
significant achievement for Rushden, who have
had a successful season so far.
