CONVOCATION CEREMONY SPEAKER
Rutgers University–Newark is pleased to welcome Rutgers
alumnus The Honorable Barry T. Albin, a justice of the New
Jersey Supreme Court, as convocation speaker for the School
of Law.
Justice Albin was nominated by Gov. James E. McGreevey on
July 10, 2002, to serve on the New Jersey Supreme Court. He
was confirmed by the New Jersey Senate on Sept. 12, 2002,
and was sworn in as an associate justice by Chief Justice
Deborah T. Poritz at a private ceremony on Sept. 18, 2002. On Oct. 3, 2002, he
reaffirmed the oath of office in a public ceremony at the Trenton War Memorial.
Justice Albin was confirmed by the New Jersey Senate for a second term and
tenure on June 22, 2009.
At the time of his nomination, Justice Albin was a partner in the Woodbridge law
firm of Wilentz, Goldman and Spitzer.
Justice Albin was born on July 7, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated
from Rutgers College in 1973. After graduating from Cornell Law School in 1976,
he began his career as a deputy attorney general in the Appellate Section of the
New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice. Justice Albin then served as an assistant
prosecutor in Passaic and Middlesex counties from 1978 to 1982. He began his
association with the Wilentz firm in 1982 and was named a partner in 1986.
Justice Albin is a past president of the New Jersey Association of Criminal Defense
Lawyers (1999-2000) and served as a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court
Criminal Practice Committee from 1987 to 1992. While in private practice, he
received awards for community service from the Metuchen-Edison branch of the
NAACP, for lawyer achievement from the Middlesex County Bar Association, and
for outstanding commitment to law enforcement from the New Jersey Honor
Legion Departments.
Justice Albin and his wife, Inna, have two sons, Gerald and Daniel.

THE ACADEMIC COSTUME
The wearing of academic dress dates back to the early days of the oldest
universities in the world. In the American Council on Education’s book entitled
American Universities and Colleges, it is suggested that “Gowns may have been
counted necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval
scholars. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head…”
American universities established a code of regulations which today is followed
by almost all American institutions. The establishment of this code has made it
possible to distinguish the bachelors, masters and doctors, and at the same time,
to recognize the university awarding the degree.
The colors of the lining of the hoods for the nine original colonial colleges are:
scarlet, Rutgers; crimson, Harvard; green-gold-silver, William and Mary; blue, Yale;
red and blue, Pennsylvania; orange and black, Princeton; light blue and white,
Columbia; brown, Brown; and green and white, Dartmouth. The bachelor’s gown
has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves,
open at the wrist. The rear part of its oblong shape is square-cut, and the front
part has an arc cut away. It is worn open or closed.
The hoods vary in size: 48 inches for the doctor’s degree, 42 inches for the
master’s, and 36 inches for the bachelor’s. All hoods are lined in the academic
color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. If the institution has more
than one color, the colors are shown in divisions using chevrons. The binding or
edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in the color designating the subject in
which the degree was granted. Black mortarboards are worn for all degrees.
Some of the colors in the bindings of the hoods are: white, Arts and Letters; drab,
Business Administration; violet, Criminal Justice; light blue, Education; purple,
Law; apricot, Nursing; peacock blue, Public Administration; blue, Philosophy;
gold, Science; and citron, Social Work.
RUTGERS SCHOOL OF LAW
Rutgers School of Law is located on the Newark campus of Rutgers, The
State University of New Jersey. The campus is situated in the heart of
Newark's cultural center, close to the Newark Public Library, the Newark
Museum, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. The social, cultural,
professional, and educational opportunities of the Newark/New York City area
combine to provide a fitting location for the study of law.
Qualities that typify the Rutgers School of Law include its outstanding legal
education, nationally recognized faculty, very diverse student body,
commitment to public service, and affordable tuition. Of approximately 800
students in both day and evening programs, more than 45 percent are women
and 38 percent are members of minority groups. The majority of students are
New Jersey residents, but students hail from all parts of the country and
from many countries around the world. They have earned degrees from more
than 120 different colleges and universities in the U.S. and many schools
abroad. The excellence and the diversity of the School of Law-Newark
students are reflected in their varied professional interests, goals, and
outlooks, making classroom discussion and other law school interactions
dynamic and educationally stimulating. The faculty is as diverse as the
student body and brings to the students and the classroom their experiences
as nationally recognized experts in a multitude of legal areas ranging from
corporate law to public interest law.
Faculty scholarship and extracurricular service are well-known and respected
in the legal community, as well as in the academic legal community. As a
result, the Rutgers School of Law was awarded the first New Jersey chapter of the
Order of the Coif, the national honor society for law students.
The oldest law school in the state, the Rutgers School of Law has had many
ancestors and locales. It began in 1908 in an imposing Victorian town house as a
proprietary institution, the New Jersey Law School. Its business-oriented
curriculum quickly attracted many students, and by the 1920s it had become the
nation's second largest law school. In 1927, it moved to a former brewery at 40
Rector Street. The school joined in 1936 with another private institution, the
Mercer Beasley Law School, to become the University of Newark Law School.
In 1946, the entire University of Newark was absorbed by Rutgers University,
and the School of Law was officially born. Over the next several decades,
the school became an institution of national stature. Its library expanded
to become the most comprehensive collection in New Jersey, and its faculty
tripled in size. In the 1960s, the law school pioneered in developing
clinical education and in providing the opportunity to study law to women
and minority groups. In 1967, the school of law in Camden, which had been
administered by the dean of the law school in Newark, was created as a
separate unit of the university, and the university's original law school
became the Rutgers School of Law. After outgrowing several buildings in
downtown Newark, it moved in 1978 to the skyscraper that became the S.I.
Newhouse Center for Law and Justice. In January 2000, the Rutgers School of
Law moved to the new 225,000-square-foot Center for Law and Justice,
located at the corner of Washington and New streets.
The New Jersey Law School was registered with the Board of Regents of New
York on March 2, 1922. In 1941, the University of Newark Law School became a
member of the Association of American Law Schools. This membership was
transferred to the Rutgers School of Law in December 1946. Also in 1941, the
University of Newark Law School was placed on the approved list of schools of
the American Bar Association and registered by the Board of Regents of
New York. This accreditation and registration continued after the incorporation of
the school into the university.
Situated on 38 acres in downtown Newark, New Jersey's largest city, Rutgers
University-Newark serves 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The
campus is home to the College of Arts and Sciences, University College, the
Graduate School, Rutgers Business School, the School of Law, the School of
Criminal Justice, the School of Public Affairs and Administration and a number of
research and outreach centers. Since 1997, Rutgers University-Newark has been
ranked the nation's most diverse national university by U.S. News & World Report.

RUTGERS UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Congratulations, Class of 2015!
Welcome to the Rutgers University Alumni Association (RUAA), the universitywide
alumni organization in which all Rutgers graduates are members—for free, for
life! You are joining a powerful network of more than 460,000 alumni worldwide,
a legion of scarlet enthusiasts who have shared many of the same experiences and
traditions that have made your time at Rutgers memorable.
As you embark upon this new chapter in your life, the Rutgers University Alumni
Association website will help you stay connected with Rutgers and fellow alumni in
ways that are meaningful to you. Networking events, social outings, exclusive
discounts, career resources, volunteer opportunities, and many diverse groups
across the United States and abroad await you.
Make sure you update your information on the RUAA website to customize which
news and updates you receive from the university and to ensure your alumni
benefits card and free subscription to Rutgers Magazine find you at your new
address: Ralumni.com/newgrads15.
Your days as a student are over, but as a Rutgers graduate, you are scarlet forever.
Rutgers and the RUAA look forward to being a part of the next exciting stage of
your life. Congratulations and welcome to the RUAA!
