20 March 2015
Dear Bridge House Parents
This is somehow a relatively short letter to you at the end of another very full term. It accompanies your
child’s first-term report and various other important documents. It is, as always, difficult to comprehend
quite how quickly we have found ourselves at the end of the first quarter! Both a riotously colourful
athletics day and swimming gala entertained us with outstanding performances and numerous new
records. Swimathon returned an unprecedented number of laps (and 507 kilometers). A monochromatic
Founders’Day glimpse of the Roaring 20s has come and gone, as have Round Square Conferences,
international exchanges, sports tours and festivals. The Bridge House AGM and the exciting IT One-onOne strategy has been presented and well received. The first term’s reporting process is nearly complete
as I write, and our Grade 9s are “out there somewhere” on Outward Bound, returning to be rung in on
Friday. We have logged 442430 kilometers since last Founders’ Day, and our running (excuse the pun)
total is now over a million kilometres! It’s a word used too much these days, but “awesome” captures
that feat – and it is not over yet! Please keep on moving and logging over this holiday period!
Thank you to all who have been behind the many opportunities afforded our pupils, to all who have
supported them, and to the pupils themselves, for the energy they bring to the campus every day. We are
all, I think, looking forward to this opportunity to catch our breath, but I know too, that we are looking
forward to the first of the winter terms and all that the change of seasons brings.
Please join me in wishing all of the best to the following groups who will be busy in the coming weeks: Mr
Sutcliffe and Ms Tyler and a large contingent of our Grade 12s on the Orange River; Ms Harris, Mr Heinen
and the group travelling to the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees; Mrs Albertyn, and Messrs Andrew
Jones and Dowling, with our senior hockey boys and girls at the Fairmont Festival; Mr Sutcliffe, Mrs
Greyling and Ms Hutton-Squire and the junior hockey boys and girls at the University of Stellenbosch, and
Mesdames de Villiers, Taylor and Carstens, who travel with our netball girls to the St Andrew’s Festival in
Johannesburg. Mrs Debbie Watson and I have the pleasure of accompanying a delegation of five students
to the Africa Region Round Square Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. We return at the end of the first week of
term, so please refer any enquiries that you would have sent to me in that time, to either Mr Rory
Malcolm or Mr Andrew Jones. ([email protected] or [email protected].)
Congratulations and good luck to Shantelle Piedt who has been selected to attend the RYLA (Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards) camp from 26 to 29 March.
Our thoughts and prayers need to be with Monique Williams (Grade 9) and her family, on the recent
passing of Monique’s father. Monique is to be commended on her strength of character in seeing the
Outward Bound Trek through in spite of her loss. We wish the Williams family strength at this time.
To our Jewish families, we wish you a Happy Passover, and to our Christian families, a Happy Easter. To
families who are travelling, travel safely wherever you may go and, if enjoy your holiday time with those
closest to you.
School re-opens for the second term as follows: boarders return in the afternoon of Tuesday 7 April and
normal school starts for all with a full academic day and sport programme on Wednesday 8 April.
Please note the Parent-Pupil-Teacher interviews on the afternoon and evening of Tuesday 14 April. Please
do discuss your child’s report in detail, and please make appointments to see her or his teachers by
contacting Jenny Jones at reception. (021 874 8100 or [email protected])
Yours faithfully
Mike Russell

Dear Parents and Guardians
Notice of an update to the policy regarding late or lost media.
In a bid to encourage the responsible use of the Learning Commons and to ensure consistency, as
of this term, the procedure regarding late or lost media has been amended as follows:




At the end of each term, students with outstanding items will be notified in writing. Parents
and guardians will also receive a copy of this notification.
Those students who have not returned these items by the fourth week of the term following
this notice will be issued a final warning. This warning will also be sent to parents and
guardians.
If the item/s have not been returned by the end of the term following the notice, the full
replacement cost will be debited to the student’s account.
In the event that the student returns the item/s after this amount has been debited, a refund
will not be made.
Please note that the value of the items on our system is calculated based on acquiring the latest
version of the item, so in instances where an older copy of an item is no longer available, we can
replace it with the newer version. In addition, the cost of having the item delivered to the school is
also included in the price.
In order to ensure consistency in our collection, the Learning Commons will not accept items which
have been purchased by parents to replace lost or damaged items.
We are hopeful that these measures will never have to be followed and are optimistic that students
will be responsible with items they have borrowed from the Learning Commons. Should you have
any queries regarding this matter, please feel free to contact any member of the Learning Commons
team who will gladly assist you.
Kind regards
Shaun Kirk
Director: Learning Commons

 It is compulsory to participate in school sport twice a week. Grade 8s& 9s must
participate in either hockey, soccer or netball.
 Any exceptions to the above requirements must be agreed upon by the Director of
Sport (Mr Riaan van de Rheede) Head of College Girls Sport (Mrs Colleen de
Villiers) and Head of College Boys Sport (Mr Andrew Stamper). These requests in
writing and/or medical certificates must be sent to the Director of Sport.
 If a sport is over-subscribed the pupil will be asked to make a different sport choice.
 In order to avoid clashes with fixtures and team selection, pupils are encouraged to
participate in only one team sport per term. If they choose to participate in more than
one team sport then they must specify which sport is their priority sport.
 Once a pupil has signed up for a sport they must complete the term participating in
that sport. A request to change sport selection must be done through Mrs De Villiers
(girls) or Mr Stamper (boys).
 Only the official sports uniform may be worn for matches and practices.
 If a pupil needs to be excused from practices/matches, a note/email from the parent is
required. This should be sent to the teacher in charge of the sport or the sport office
as soon as possible, but definitely before 12 noon.
