SCI | CONNECT | ISSUE 46
The SCI, in collaboration with its partners from the Light
Steel Forum, has just completed a project to produce
best practice guidance for light steel construction. The
project was co-funded by the UK Commission for
Employment and Skills (UKCES) through the UK Futures
Programme. The objective of the UK Futures Programme
is to enhance skills in the offsite construction sector
with a view to enabling the sector to grow and help to
meet the ever-present demand for new housing in the
UK.

A trial virtual learning centre for best practice in light
steel framing. This has been tested with industry
partners and their clients.

It is the intention of SCI and the Light Steel Forum
members that both aspects of the project are further
developed and expanded in the future.
A new comprehensive SCI publication on light steel
framing is due to be published next month. However, if
you have any questions relating to light steel framing or
modular construction SCI can provide assistance.
Whether this is to direct you to the relevant guidance or
support with a finding a solution for a particular design
concern.

Molabolt achieves SCI Assessed for peg
anchors
Molabolt peg anchors are ‘blind’ fixings, often used in
connections to hollow sections, where access is only possible
from one side. Molabolts are available in carbon steel and
stainless steel, in a variety of sizes. Full details are available at
Molabolt.
SCI have recently completed a programme of physical testing
and calculation of design resistances in shear and tension.
The design resistances were determined in accordance with BS
EN 1990, and may be used directly in designs to BS 5950 or to
the Eurocodes. The design resistances, which are available
from the manufacturer, have the formal endorsement of SCI
Assessed. Full details of the test programme and the
determination of the design resistances are contained in SCI
report RT 1646, which can be obtained from Molabolt at
[email protected].
Design of Steel Structures – UK Edition
SCI Members will have received the new jointly produced SCIECCS publication entitled Design of Steel Structures – UK
Edition which will guide UK designers through the changes
that the Eurocodes represent. It is a derivative of the general
ECCS book “Design of Steel Structures”, and includes
complementary UK-specific information relating to the
National Annexes and common practice. The level of detail
provided means this UK edition will help designers, whatever
their previous experience, apply Eurocode 3 easily and
correctly in the United Kingdom. This will be the first in a
series of joint publications.

April has been a busy month for writing research proposals,
with three Innovate UK competitions open for applications.
The calls relate to circular economy business models, building
whole-life performance and supply chain integration in
construction. We were partners on three applications and led
on a fourth.
We have recently heard that we have been short-listed for one
application led by Price & Myers and involving SCI and the
University of Cambridge. The closing date for the full-stage
application is 28th May.
High strength steels in long span structures
The use of steels with higher strengths (400-700 MPa) can
lead to significantly lighter structures if limitations on stability
and deflection can be overcome. Although widely used in
automotives and machinery, structural applications remain
scarce. This seminar aims to equip engineers with essential
information for the efficient design of long span structures
such as stadia and exhibition halls made of high strength
steel.

This seminar will disseminate results from HILONG, a European
collaborative research project part-funded by the Research
Fund for Coal and Steel, which studied innovative solutions for
high strength, long span steel structures.

SCI would like to welcome Antonia N Pilpilidou, who has joined
SCI as a graduate engineer. Antonia has a Degree from
Thessaloniki University and Master of Design in Steel
Structures in Smart Cities from University of Naples Federico II.

Michael Sansom, SCI, Associate Director
Michael is a Chartered Environmentalist with 20 years postgraduate experience of environmental and sustainability work
in consultancy, research and research management roles in
the construction sector.
Before joining SCI, he worked for the UK Construction Industry
Research and Information Association (CIRIA) managing
construction research projects. He then worked for a large US
consultancy working on contaminated land investigation and
remediation.
He is responsible for SCI’s Sustainability Division, and involved
in a range of sustainable construction activities including life
cycle assessment, carbon foot-printing, BREEAM assessments
and operational carbon emissions assessment and reduction.
Over the last decade, he has played a leading role on behalf of
the steel construction sector in the diverse and fast changing
sustainable construction field.

Recent Heyne Tillett Steel projects include a new sports hall and sixth form centre. HTS proposed a
double pitched steel roof structure with no internal support using four sloped steel trusses
spanning 34m along the length of the building.
