ongress today stepped up attack on External Affairs
Minister Sushma Swaraj alleging there was quid
pro quo involved in her ‘assistance’ to Lalit Modi in
obtaining British travel documents and demanded that
the scam-tainted former IPL Commissioner be brought
back and tried in India.
Congress national spokesperson P L Punia said,
‘There are circumstances which establish contact between Sushma Swaraj
and Lalit Modi. As a quid pro quo, Sushma Swaraj has
done favour to a tainted person who is accused of Rs
700 crore money laundering, tax evasion and several
other charges.
Terming Swaraj’s claim of helping Modi on ‘humanitarian’
grounds as ‘totally bogus’ and one not standing scrutiny
of facts, Punia told reporters here what has been said on
behalf of the NDA government and BJP chief Amit Shah
in the Minister’s defence is ‘a lame excuse.’
Meanwhile, over 6.3 lakh students will have to take
fresh test as the Supreme Court today scrapped the
All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) 2015 and ordered
re-conduct of the examination within four weeks.
A vacation bench of justices R K Agrawal and Amitava
Roy directed the institutions involved in conduct of the
examination to render assistance to Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) in this endeavour within
the stipulated period decided by it.

The Madras High Court today
declined to order a stay on the
elections to Nadigar Sangam on
the plea filed by actors Nasser,
Karthi and Vishal.
They ordered issuing a notice to
Nadigar Sangam general secretary
Radharavi seeking a reply before
22 June.
The trio had stated in their petition that elections to the association
should be conducted under the supervision of two judges, who should
be appointed by the court.
They also urged the court to postpone polls to a holiday since 15 July is
a working day and it would be difﬁcult
for many to cast their vote.
The petition came up for hearing
before Justice Ravichandra Babu.
The counsel for the petitioners and

The Government Railway Police
(GRP) today arrested a sevenmember North Indian gang from Uttar
Pradesh for indulging in robberies
in trains, like chain snatchings from

GRP sources said a special team

nabbed the accused, all hailing from
Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, for
their involvement in inter-State train
robberies.
Those arrested were Mithun (25),
Sunny alias Khannia (23), Krishan Kumar
(28), Ajay (22), Bituram (22), Deepak
kumar (19), Mukeshkumar (36).
Investigations revealed that they were
part of a gang involved in the train robberies and their commission of offence

Anna University today released the
random numbers for the Tamilnadu
Engineering Admissions.
They were announced by the varsity’s vice-chancellor M Rajaram and
secretary to government of Tamilnadu, Higher Education department,
Apoorva.
Tamilnadu Engineering Admissions
Secretary V Rhymend Uthariaraj said,
‘the random number will be utilised
for the preparation of inter-se-merit
where more than one candidate have
got the same mark.’
The inter-se-merit of candidates
shall be determined in the order of
priority based on the percentage of
mathematics, percentage of marks
in physics, chemistry, percentage of
mark in the fourth optional subject,
date of birth in which the elder person
would be given the preference and
the random number assigned where
the higher value would be given
preference.
Rhymend Uthariaraj said last year
the number of random numbers assigned were 124 and the this year it
would be decided once the rank list
is announced on 19 June.
He also said that in case the can-

ordered to release water from Papanasam, Servalar and Manimuthar dams
from tomorrow for agriculture purpose.
In a statement here, she said she
has received requests from the
farming community to release water
from these dams. ‘Accepting their
request, I have ordered to release
water from 16 June,’ she said.
The decision will beneﬁt 37,435
acre farm lands in Ambasamudram,
Nanguneri, Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai blocks in Tirunelveli district
and Thiruvaikundam, Tiruchendur
and Sathankulam blocks in Tuticorin
district.
Missing aircraft:

Chennai, June 15:
The extensive search operations for
the Dornier aircraft which went missing a week ago with a three member
crew, made progress when a submarine picked up feeble intermittent
signals this morning.
It may be noted that naval submarine INS Sindhudhvaj that was into
underwater search had also picked
up signals on Sunday which are most
likely from the missing plane. The
submarine was brought to the Karaikal-Cuddalore region to conﬁrm the
transmission of 37.5 Khz from sonar
locator beacon of the missing aircraft.
While experts from National Institute of Oceanography (NIOT) team
and a black box detector are already
involved in the rescue mission, it is
reported that a vessel belonging to
the National Institute of Ocean Technology would launch its under-sea
probe today.
A team of four scientists are also
on board a Coast Guard ship to help
locate the cockpit voice data recorder
of the missing plane.
Earlier, the assistance of the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC),
Hyderabad, was requested by the
Coast Guard to provide satellite
imagery for analysis of the area for
possible location of the aircraft.

From today, the Indian Railways
will implement new timings for online
booking of Tatkal. Under the revised
timings, slots have been divided
based on AC and non-AC tickets.
‘The online reservation for air conditioned coach tickets under Tatkal
scheme will open at 10 am on the
previous day of journey, and from 11
am, passengers can book for non-AC
classes’.
Railway ofﬁcials say that increased
online trafﬁc and fraudulent agents
are reasons for the new timings.
‘We want to ensure that individuals
get more access to tickets’.
The change has been effected to
facilitate hassle-free booking by reducing load on the server, a senior
Railway ofﬁcial said.
‘Staggering the timings will
help reducing load at windows
and the ticketing sites,’ he
added. Suresh Prasad, who
commutes regularly to Kolkata,
welcomed the move.
‘For those who couldn’t make it in
AC class can at least try in sleeper
without losing hope,’ he stated.
In an attempt to facilitate the
common man, all ticketing agents
including those of IRCTC will be
restricted in booking tickets for the
ﬁrst 30 minutes from the opening
time--- from 8 am to 8.30 am for
general bookings, from 10 am to
10.30 am for Tatkal AC classes, and
from 11 am to 11.30 am for Tatkal
non-AC classes, the Railways said
in a statement.
Meanwhile, Vasudevan, an approved IRCTC agent from Sowcarpet
said that this change would do no
good to common people. ‘The probability of
unapproved agents making proﬁts
is high. Only when the system is
completely organised to prevent it,
people will be beneﬁted,’ he added.
He also said that the burden on
office goers will increase as they
should be keen in booking the tickets
at the prescribed time. However, the
proposal of refunding a percentage
of fare on cancellation of conﬁrmed
Tatkal tickets will be beneﬁcial, if implemented. An ex-railway ofﬁcial from

the railways should not delay the proposal. ‘Poor and middle class occupy
a large part of railway commuting for

They are the boys of the moment,
so to say. Having stolen the hearts of
ﬁlm-goers with their performances as
‘Periya Kaakka Muttai’ (Vignesh) and
‘Chinna Kaakka Muttai’ -- Vignesh
and Ramesh are over the moon but

terms of dishes and even on the same
day consume a little bit of everything.’

Corporation’s efforts to maintain
neatness took a big step forward as
the unorganised hawkers agreed to
move to designated spots.
Sources said the Corporation had
already completed most of the work
on shifting shops by reclaiming the
sands from 2,500 unorganised vendors along the stretch from Triumph
of Labour Statue to Light House.
After the regulation drive, Corporation beach cleaning machines
have been able to clean more
spaces on the beach. Many of
the shops were a hindrance for
cleaning the beach. Machines were
unable to clean the waste collected
near shops. Now the sands can
be kept clean of this waste as the
machine can move freely across
the stretch.
Children are now seen playing in
large numbers on the vast expanse
of unoccupied sands, without hindrance.
‘Shopkeepers used to prevent us
from playing fearing that we would
hinder their business. Now the
space is free of them . We have
started playing without bothering
the vendors,’ said Mani, a who lives
in Triplicane.
Vendors however feel that their
sales has dipped by 50 per cent.
Sources said that some have
formed two additional rows without
the Corporation’s approval.
Chennai Corporation is planning
to shift the remaining shops near
the swimming pool. The civic
body has also banned new outlets
on the beach sands. The High
Court had already directed the
State government to implement
schemes to regulate vendors on
the beach.

Children from Bal Vihar, a unit of
Chinmaya Mission, came together on
a single platform to present a series
of programmes at Chinmaya Heritage Centre, Chetpet, here Sunday.
The events were organised as part of
the centenary celebrations of Swami
Chinmayananda, which kicked off
yesterday.
Be it rendering devotional songs or
reciting slokas, they did so with loads
of enthusiasm.
As Balvihar sevaks kept reciting
verses on Lord Hanuman and Lord
Ganesha children kept humming
them too. They also tried to explain
the signiﬁcance of Hindu symbolism
through a cultural programme. Skits
and dramas were also performed.
In a fun-ﬁlled atmosphere, children
from Bal Vihar’s Adyar, Anna Nagar,
Tambaram, T Nagar and Mambalam
kendras showed their enthusiasm
on the stage.
Before the events kicked off, Swami

undergraduate students will be showcased, among them 53 papers have
been accepted to be published.
The release said the summit will
have four days dedicated exclusively for basic medical sciences,
two days for preclinical research
work and six days for clinical research. What other place would
be more apt to display these

The arrest of some African nationals
for allegedly trafﬁcking narcotic drug
cocaine in Tamilnadu is causing concern to the authorities here as they
suspect it could be part of a larger
smuggling network.
A gang comprising nationals of several African countries is suspected to
be behind the supply chain of cocaine
to individual addicts in Tamil Nadu
and is operating from hideouts in
Bengaluru, a top ofﬁcial said.
‘A gang in Bengaluru, (which is)
a network of some African guys,
is behind the supply of cocaine to
Tamilnadu and it could be a bigger
gang or part of a larger network as
smuggling and supplying cocaine is
not easy,’ Narcotics Control Bureau
Zonal Director Prem Anand Sinha
told PTI.
Narcotics Control Bureau data related to those arrested in Tamilnadu
for possession of commercial quantity cocaine (over 100 grams) in the
past one year alone demonstrates
the involvement of African nationals
in drug peddling, he said.
In February this year, Kuami Ebeniser, a Ghanaian national, was arrested for possession of 160 grams
of cocaine here. Last month, a Nigerian, Izuoba Augustine Chibuike was
caught with 190 grams of cocaine
in the city, while a Tanzanian, Mark
Hendry was arrested for possessing
123 g of cocaine.

High hopes
ith the Bibek Debroy committee submitting its ﬁnal report,
the Railways is set for big changes. There is reason to believe
that this will not be another committee and another report since the
Modi government appears determined to transform the Railways
and minister Suresh Prabhu was handpicked for the job. Well-off
people may get a choice to travel by super-fast private trains run
by the Ambanis and the Tatas.
Allaying fears in some quarters, the committee has clariﬁed that it
has endorsed private entry as in the case of airports, ports, telecom
and roads, but not recommended privatisation of the Railways. The
Railways provides affordable travel to ordinary people. Without
sacriﬁcing this service, the Railways has to be made commercially
viable. This is a challenge since high-end passenger and freight
business would possibly go to more-efﬁcient private players.
To balance public service and private proﬁt, and curb the malaise of political interference in the functioning of the Railways
it is proposed that a regulatory authority be set up independent of
the Railway Ministry having a statutory backing, with a separate
budget and with quasi-judicial powers. Incidentally, the drama of
presenting a separate budget for the Railways may come to an end
as many experts see it as a colonial practice.
The committee also favours the separation of peripheral activities like running schools and hospitals, real estate, catering and
maintaining the Railway Protection Force from the core business
of transportation. Three key functions of the Railways — policymaking, regulatory work and operation — may get separated. It
is apparent the Railway Board is not going to be happy about the
committee’s recommendations, which also include decentralisation
of powers. It wants to develop divisions and zones as independent
business centres.
Big ideas all, and some make sense too, but where is the money?
An investment advisory committee of experts has been proposed to
raise resources. The railway assets, including surplus land, may be
monetised or commercially exploited. The burden on passengers,
however, should be minimum and freight rates should not become
so high that industry turns to road transportation. It is an ambitious
vision. Let’s see how this pans out.

echo effect.
But we don’t always press ‘like’ or ‘share’ buttons on every
post that pops up in our Facebook feed, even if we like it or care
about it.
Now, Facebook would know even without any of your ‘labelled’ activity
whether particular stuff in the News Feed interests
you or not.
Facebook is tweaking its algorithms to account for
a new metric: the amount of time you spend looking
at things in your feed, regardless of whether or not
you actively interact with it, TechCrunch reported.
Scroll past something without stopping for long, and Facebook’s algorithms will slowly learn that you don’t particularly care for that sort of
content.
Stop on a post for a bit, and Facebook starts the timer behind the scenes.
If you spend more time on this story than you spend on most things in
your feed a’ studying a picture, perusing the comment thread a’ they will
take that as a signal that it’s something you care about.
This change allows Facebook’s algorithms to take the hint without requiring you to lift a ﬁnger.
Once things shift toward passive behaviour analysis, Facebook’s
News Feed begins to understand what you care about more than
you ever could.
Facebook said it would be introducing the algorithm tweak in the coming
weeks. However, don’t expect any dramatic changes to what pops up in
your feed, at least not very soon. It will take some time before it actually
makes an impact.
Especially, pages are not likely to see signiﬁcant changes in distribution
as a result of this update.

A 17-year old who left northern England to join Islamic State was reported
to have become Britain’s youngest
suicide bomber when he blew himself
up in a car in northern Iraq, British
media said after the militants posted
pictures on social media.
The young man, who was named
as Abu Yusuf al-Britani, was shown
standing next to a black vehicle in
photographs posted on Islamic Stateafﬁliated social media accounts, the
Guardian newspaper reported. The
posts said he then took part in a suicide
attack in Iraq’s Salahuddin province.
He is believed to be Talha Asmal,
a teenager who left West Yorkshire
in March, and was thought to have
joined Islamic State, according to a
statement from his family.

The number of patients with Middle
East Respiratory Syndrome continues to rise, with 24 cases newly
conﬁrmed over the weekend, bringing
the total to 150.
Many newly conﬁrmed cases were
the result of ignoring quarantine rules.
An ambulance driver for Samsung
Medical Center in Seoul, who was
supposed to be closely monitored after
contact with a conﬁrmed MERS patient,
moved freely around the hospital for
several days before being diagnosed.
Another driver of a private ambulance was also infected after coming
in contact with a MERS patient without protection.
And a staffer with an IT ﬁrm in Busan
visited several hospitals and pharmacies before he was tested for MERS,
because he did not tell doctors he
had been seconded to Daechung
Hospital, a source of MERS in Daejeon. That man alone is believed to
have been in contact with over 900
people who may in turn have spread
the disease.
Health authorities are urging people to avoid hospitals and inform
them if they have a fever so they
can be transferred to a designated
MERS hospital. Patients should
give doctors as much detail as
possible, including on where they
have been.

wearing a blue three-piece suit, a tie

Earlier Sunday, a South African
judge ordered authorities to prevent
al-Bashir from leaving South Africa
because he is wanted by the International Criminal Court, human rights
activists said on Sunday.
The African National Congress,
which is South Africa’s ruling party,

abhorred all acts of violence wherever

Transport Association (IATA), the
region’s carriers are expected to see
a 12.9 per

numbers this year, the only region
with a double-digit expansion.
IATA said an improvement in proﬁtability is also expected to be driven by
lower fuel costs.
Globally, IATA announced an upward revision of its 2015 industry
outlook to a $29.3 billion net proﬁt. On

industry would achieve a four per cent
net proﬁt margin.
The signiﬁcant strengthening from
the $16.4 billion net proﬁt in 2014
reflects the net impact of several
global factors, including stronger
global economic prospects, record

IATA said.
‘All regions are expected to see an
improvement in proﬁtability in 2015
compared with 2014. There are,
however, stark differences in regional
economies, which are also reﬂected
in airline performance. The industry’s
fortunes are far from uniform. Many
airlines still face huge challenges’,

IATA said the recent decline in fuel

Coal India 6th largest

Country’s top dry-fuel miner Coal
India (CIL) has become the sixthlargest mining company in the world
in terms of market capital, says a
recent PwC report.
Earlier, the company was at the
eighth spot among top 40 global mining ﬁrms, according to the report.
Another State-run company, NMDC,
the country’s top iron ore miner which
also ﬁgures in the list, has improved
its position by coming to the 21st slot
from 24th earlier.
The report ‘Mine 2015’, which analyses the ﬁnancial performance of the
top 40 mining companies by market
capitalisation, says though there have
been improvements in most ﬁnancial
statement metrics across the top 40
companies, market values continued
to decline.
‘The top 40 miners lost $156 billion, or about 16 per cent of their
combined market value, in 2014’,
the report said, adding that the good
news is that it is only half of last year’s
slide.
The market capitalisation for the
top 40 was $791 billion at the end of
2014, which is where it sat 10 years
ago, it said.
Denying any wrongdoing, the two
software giants have said they are
‘fully compliant’ with the immigration rules.
Infosys, in the past, has faced
visa-related issues when one of its
former employees, Jack Palmer ﬁled

New Delhi, June 15 (PTI):
Central food safety regulator
FSSAI has asked State food commissioners to inspect and evaluate
all packaged products available in
markets across the country in the
wake of Maggi controversy.
‘There are hundreds of packaged
food products which are being sold
in the country without registration,
they need to be inspected and
evaluated’, a source said.
The directions were given by the
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to the State food
safety commissioners in a meeting
earlier this month. ‘It has also been
suggested during the meeting that
the state food safety commissioners
should prepare their line of action
for the year and collect samples
of all the packaged products, even
those which are not registered with
FSSAI’, the source added.
The State ofﬁcials were also told
to take action if required. FSSAI
had also handed over a list of 500
products rejected by it as of 30 April,
2015 to the State food safety commissioners.

Chinese cos have
more women
directors: Study
New Delhi, June 15 (PTI):
When it comes to gender diversity in
board rooms, Indian corporates have
lesser number of women directors
compared to their Chinese peers,
while European nations lead the pack,
says a report.
Consultancy major Deloitte Global
said that women hold about 12 per
cent of board seats worldwide while
only four per cent of them are at the
helm of boards.
It noted that many Indian companies
have started appointing women directors to their boards, at executive as
well as non executive positions.
The ﬁndings are part of the report titled ‘Women in the Boardroom: A Global Perspective’ released earlier this
week. It is based on a data of nearly
6,000 companies spread across 40
countries, including India.
In terms of percentage of board
seats held by women, India’s score
stood at 7.7 per cent while that of
China was at 8.5 per cent. The US
had a score of 12.2 per cent and that
of Germany was 18.3 per cent.
The highest percentage of women
directors were in Norway (36.7 per
cent), followed by France (29.9 per
cent), Sweden (24.4 per cent), Italy
(22.3 per cent) and Finland (22.1 per
cent).
However, Japan (2.4 per cent),
Brazil (6.3 per cent), Russia (5.7 per
cent), Republic of Korea (1.7 per
cent) and Indonesia (3.7 per cent) are
placed below India.
The report said that at six per cent,
gender diversity in some of Asia’s
leading economies is the lowest
compared to other parts of the world.
‘Many Indian companies have started to introduce women directors to
their boards. Currently eight per cent
of board seats are held by women
and three per cent of boards chairs
are women’, it said.

the ﬁrst ﬁve months this year to $5.85
billion, says a Grant Thornton report.
According to the assurance, tax
and advisory ﬁrm, there were 68 PE
transactions worth $1,249 million, up
48 per cent over same month last year
when deals worth $846 million were
announced.
‘PE activity continues to show encouraging trends, perhaps because
of optimism and the fact that overall
macro level indicators look positive’,

Mehra further said the increasing

Meanwhile, in the ﬁrst ﬁve months
of this year, PE deals amounted to
$5.85 billion, registering an increase
of 66 per cent year-on-year with

Sector-wise, with more than 50 per
cent of total volume, IT & ITES continued to be the preferred sector for
PE-deals, while banking and ﬁnancial
services and pharma sectors also
witnessed big ticket deals worth over
$100 million, the report said.

A series of events are
being organised to mark
World Elder Abuse Day
today and HelpAge India
conducted a programme
at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital apart from a signature
campaign on prevention of
elder abuse.
Also, HelpAge recently
conducted a nation-wide
survey said that around 90
per cent of the youngsters
in the city admitted that
senior citizens are abused.
The survey was conducted
in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad,
Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kanpur and Madurai. Around
200 households were selected from 20 middle and
upper middle localities in
each city.
The survey aimed to ﬁnd
out about the youngsters
view on elders abuse and if
they were aware of it. It was
revealed that 73 per cent of
the youth across the country
admitted that elder abuse
existed. While 42 per cent
felt that it is a problem of all
developing societies, 24
per cent of the youth perceive the son as abusers
the elder blames the son in
59 per cent of cases.
The main reason for
elders abuse was attributed to financial reason
which is 48.6 per cent
nation-wide and 18.5 per
cent in Chennai. Abuse
due to property was 53.2
per cent nation-wide and
17.3 per cent State- wide.
Other reasons were attitudinal relationship issue and
living alone.
‘What is surprising is that
though the youth are aware
of this issue they seem unwilling to react. In the case
of Delhi 85 per cent admit
that abuse exist yet 92 per
cent say they won’t act to
prevent it,’ said HelpAge
India, country head - Advocacy and Communications
Manjira Khurana.
He further said that
around 60 per cent of the
youth are willing to take
direct action if they come
across abuse. Yet 64 per
cent n Chennai and 45 per
cent in Hydrabed were not
willing to intervene.

Over 6.3 lakh students will
have to take fresh test as
the Supreme Court today
scrapped the All India PreMedical Test (AIPMT) 2015
and ordered re-conduct of
the examination within four
weeks.
A vacation bench of justices R K Agrawal and
Amitava Roy directed the
institutions involved in conduct of the examination to
render assistance to Central Board of Secondary
Education (CBSE) in this
endeavour within the stipulated period decided by it.
‘Petitions are allowed.
CBSE to hold AIPMT 2015
exam within four weeks,’
the bench said in its verdict.
The apex court directed
the re-examination in view
of large-scale cheating in
the test with students getting answers in the exami-
nation hall at many places.
The court had reserved
its order on 12 June on petitions seeking re-conduct
of AIPMT 2015 for alleged
large-scale irregularities
in the exam which was
held on 3 May, saying the
examination stands vitiated even if one student
is being beneﬁted illegally.
It had said that CBSE
could not be held guilty
as such but taking into
consideration the past
incidents, ‘CBSE ought
to have been cognisant of
these things.’
CBSE, represented by
Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, had opposed
the contentions seeking
cancellation of the test,
saying, ‘6.3 lakh students
cannot be made to take
the exam afresh when
only 44 students have
been found involved in
taking benefits through
unfair means.’
Earlier, the vacation
bench had asked Haryana
Police to ﬁle a fresh report
indicating the number of
beneficiaries of the alleged irregularities in the
pre-medical examination.
It had also asked police
to identify as many candidates as possible who
had been beneﬁted from
the alleged leak.
CBSE was to declare the
results of AIPMT, taken by
over six lakh students, on
5 June.
The court had said, ‘The
bigger issue is that the
sanctity of the examination is under suspicion.
We want to be doubly sure
that there is no alternative
but to order re-conduct
of the exam,’ adding that
it did not want to take a
decision ‘in haste.’
