N Secretary General Ban Ki-moon discussed
pressing issues like UN Security Council reform
and climate change with Prime Minister Narendra Modi
whose ‘global leadership’ was today lauded by him.
In his remarks at the Asia Leadership Forum in Seoul, Ban
thanked Modi for his ‘strong partnership and leadership not
only as an Asian regional leader but also global leadership.’
The UN chief met with Modi yesterday and discussed climate
change and Security Council reform among other topics,
Ban’s deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters.
‘The Secretary-General underscored that 2015 would
be a year for global action, as the new sustainable
development goals are expected to be adopted in September at the General Assembly,’ Haq said.
Ban also expressed the hope that Modi himself would
represent India at the September summit in the city.
In the US, setting his sights on the White House,
Indian-American Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has
formed an exploratory committee to look into the possibility of mounting a credible challenge as a Republican
nominee for the 2016 US presidential bid.
If Jindal, 43, announces going ahead with his plans, he
would be the first ever Indian-American politician to run
for a US presidential election. In doing so, he would join
the already crowded Republican presidential aspirants.
Forming an exploratory committee is considered to be
the first serious step toward a presidential bid.

Mumbai, May 19:
Apparently irked with Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat
Kohli for meeting girlfriend and
actress Anushka Sharma during
a rain break in an IPL match a
few days, the BCCI has sought an
explanation from the batsman for
his act, which is a violation of ICC’s
anti-corruption protocol.
In a rain interrupted match between RCB and DD on Sunday,
the umpires stopped play in the 2nd
over in the former’s innings. RCB
openers Kohli and Chris Gayle
returned to pavilion. But within a
few minutes, Kohli was seen in the
corridor next to the VIP box with
his girlfriend and actress Anushka
Sharma.
Technically, the match was on
that time because till then match
had been called off and last ball
was still to be bowled.
Rain stoppage doesn’t give players the liberty to leave their designated area and mingle with people,
said the BCCI.
IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, who
was in the stadium for the match
had assured media that if he received the report from ACSU of
breach of protocol then Kohli would
be issued a warning not to repeat it.

Commenting on the deaths, a

As many as 7,000 pilgrims had

Mumbai, May 19 (PTI):
As they pick India’s squad for the
upcoming Bangladesh cricket tour
tomorrow, selectors are expected to
settle for a tried and tested combination with flamboyant Virat Kohli set to
lead a largely unchanged team that
faced Australia. It may be noted that
there were rumours that senior players like Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan,
Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh
would be picked in the touring squad
to give them a farewell opportunity, but
that may not be happening now.
BCCI had announced that the AllIndia Senior Selection Committee will
meet here to pick the team’s for the
one-off Test scheduled from 10-14
June at Fatullah followed by the three
ODIs in Mirpur starting 18 June.
It was learnt by PTI that none of the
senior players, including Kohli, had
informed the selection panel, headed
by Sandeep Patil, of any wish to stand
down from the three-week tour.

On Monday, Jayalalithaa appealed

New rules: Not all
cops are happy
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 19:
Standing under the scorching sun
all through the day and handling
traffic violators is no easy task. But
this is what traffic policemen have to
do on a daily basis. ‘And the recent
regulations enforced upon us have
only made our work all the more
arduous’, they say.
Following a recent incident which
resulted in the death of a motorist
after the alleged high-handedness
by policemen, a set of ‘general rules’
have been re-enforced urging traffic
police personnel across the city to
perform duties with caution and politeness. This has come under strong
debate by many who feel, ‘how can
we be polite to wrong-doers?’. Pointing out to the recent attacks on policemen in various parts of the city, they
opine: ‘There are already less takers
for this job and if this continues to be
the case, youngsters won’t prefer
donning the khaki.’
‘As far as the recent rules are concerned, they suggest that barricades
be put on the road so that vehicles
can slow down for a check’, a traffic
policeman said. It was a bad idea
to put barricades on the road as it
would affect the free flow of traffic
movement. Again, we would be taken
to task if the traffic gets affected, he
added. The police have also been instructed not to chase violators which
many feel, may encourage the public
to violate rules.
‘Vehicles over speed and try fleeing
when they see us on the road.
In the recent case, the men were riding triples and violated a traffic signal,
hence the constable was performing
his duty trying to stop them’, says a person from the department. An Inspector
also states that the traffic police are
under severe stress while on duty.
‘While Sub-Inspectors have to book
10 violators, Inspectors need to book
20 (in a week). Head Constables too
are given targets as traffic violation is
at its all time peak in the city.’
Most traffic police feel that the public
must be given adequate awareness
rather than burdening the department.
Meanwhile, Inspector Chandru who
is investigating the KK Nagar incident, has filed an FIR and is waiting
for the Magistrate ruling, as to what
caused the death of the youngster
to bring in more clarity on the case.

No body can stop
it, says Jaya
q ‘Things desired by AIADMK
workers will happen at right time’
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 19:
Ahead of the 22 May meeting
of party Legislators where she is
expected to be elected their leader
paving the way for her return as
Chief Minister, AIADMK supremo
J Jayalalithaa has said things desired by her workers will happen
at the right time and that ‘nobody
can stop’ it.
Responding to the suicide by a
party functionary miffed over the
delay in her return as Chief Minister,
Jayalalithaa yesterday appealed to
her supporters not to put her to grief
by resorting to such extreme steps.
She said her political enemies
were creating falsehoods ‘unable
to bear our (AIADMK’s) rise’.
‘Those who have tried to defeat me
have never succeeded. Rumours
are being spread by them with an
intention to ensure their political
survival,’ she said in a statement
here, days after her acquittal in the
disproportionate assets case.
She asked her party workers to
ignore rumours and insisted that
AIADMK walked a path of discipline
and planned strategies.
‘We are at the cusp of victory after
crossing all the hurdles. Our politics
and administration should be based
on legal principles and guidelines.
That is how we have been functioning.’
‘That is why, our successive steps
are being taken according to a
planned itinerary. There is no confusion regarding this,’ she said, according to the statement.
Cadres should not mistake these
tactical measures based on discipline
and legal guidelines and make decisions in haste, she said.
‘Those things desired by my dear
party siblings will happen at the
right time. Nobody can stop this.
So there is no need for concern,’
she said.
Her statement comes in the wake
of her acquittal in the wealth case
by Karnataka High Court on 11 May.
Jayalalithaa also announced a
relief of Rs three lakh to the family of the victim, S Raja, who had
committed suicide on Monday by
jumping in front of a moving train.

q More city youngsters embracing veganism
ANURADHA C
Chennai, May 19:
Veganism is not new to Chennaiites
as the people here have embraced it as
a new religion to not only save animals
and the environment, but also their
own health. City-based environmental
experts feel that vegetarianism is not
just enough anymore. So they have
started going the extra mile to convert
(to veganism), which is the practice
of abstaining from the use of animal
products, particularly in one’s diet as
well as in buying commodities.
Bhuvaneshwari Gupta, a nutritionist
and a mother has started raising her
one-year-old child as a vegetarian. She
says, ‘Mothers are faced with countless
decisions while raising children. There
is so much to consider while we ensure
that our kids live healthy, happy lives.
As a vegan mother and a nutritionist, I
understand the vast health benefits of
eating plant-based foods, which is why
I choose to raise my child as a vegan.
You can raise yours that way, too’.
She adds, ‘My one-year-old daughter, Tara, has been vegan since birth
because plant-based foods are high
in fibre, low in saturated fat, full of
vitamins and minerals, rich in healthy
plant protein and completely free of
cholesterol, unlike meat, eggs and
dairy products’.
The key factor that urges one to take
up veganism is the unacceptability

of exploiting animals for our cause.
Having emotional attachments with
animals may form part of that reason,
while many believe that all living creatures have a right to life and freedom.
Specifics aside, avoiding animal products is one of the most obvious ways
we can take a stand against cruelty to
animals and exploitation everywhere.
Tejashwini, a PFCI activist and a
vegan said, ‘more and more people
are turning to a vegan diet for their
own health benefits. Increased
energy, younger looking skin and
eternal youth are just some of the
positives of eating plant-based
diets. Well-planned plant-based
diets are rich in protein, iron, calcium and other essential vitamins
and minerals. The plant-based
sources of these nutrients tend to
be low in saturated fat, high in fibre
and packed with antioxidants, helping mitigate some of the modern

world’s biggest health issues like
obesity, heart disease, diabetes
and cancer.’
Just like veganism is the sustainable option when it comes to looking
after the planet, plant-based living
is also a more sustainable way of
feeding the human family. There are
a few facts that ‘The Vegan Society’
points out to us. A plant-based diet
requires only one third of the land
needed to support a meat and dairy
diet. With rising global food and
water insecurity due to a myriad of
environmental and socio-economic
problems, there’s never been a
better time to adopt a more sustainable way of living. Avoiding animal
products is one of the simplest ways
an individual can reduce the strain
on food as well as other resources,
especially considering the lack of
which disproportionately affects the
poorest people all over the world.
Sneha Sethupathy, a girl who started a blog ‘More Than a Leaf’ said it is
not that difficult to practise vegetarianism in Chennai when compared to the
other places in the country as our city
has a lot of vegetarian restaurants.
‘Deciding to bid goodbye to chocolate,
burgers or chips could be heartbreaking for many. I have the biggest sweet
tooth, so I thought it was going to be
really hard to give up. Surprisingly
enough, it was just a matter of substituting one thing for another, dates and
natural maple syrup for candy, carrots
with hummus instead of chips. It is
hard at first, but the confidence you
gain about your body makes it worth it.’
It is time to ask ourselves a question. If it is now possible to live a
life that involves delicious food and
drink, delivers better health, leaves a
smaller carbon footprint and avoids
killing other creatures, then why don’t
we, the people of Chennai, take up
veganism?

girl’s webbed fingers
NT Bureau,
Chennai, May 19:
A team of doctors at Government
Stanley Medical College performed
a rare surgery to separate the fingers
of four-year-old child Preetha Shetty,
who had webbed fingers. The girl
was suffering from a medical condition known as Syndactyly where two
or more digits are fused together.
Although this condition occurs
normally in some mammals, but is
unusual in humans, doctors said and
added it is the most common congenital malformation of the hand, with
an incidence of one in 2000-3000
live births and the male-to-female
ratio is 2:1.
If surgical intervention is not done,
it can significantly impair finger and
hand function. The impairment is
worse when the syndactyly is complete or complex, or when it involves
the border digits with fingers of uneven lengths.
Preetha who was admitted to the
Government Stanley Medical College
and Hospital, underwent surgery for
compound webbed fingers on 2 May.
Speaking to reporters, Stanley Hospital, Plastic Surgery Deparment Head Dr
V Ramadevi said, ‘Intially we planned
to separate the fingers with surgeries.
During the operation we found that
arteries and vein were not fused. So
we decided that it possible to remove it
in a single stage surgery. Thus the surgery on the four-year-old patient was
successful. Doctors at hospital perform
around 12 cases with webbed fingers
every month of which three cases were
of compound fusion. But in this
particular case,
it is very rare’
Stanley Government Hospital
Dean Dr P Karkuzhali said, ‘This
condition must treated at at early
age to prevent the fingers from curving towards other ones. So the ideal
age surgery is below age of one.
The surgery is performed under regional or general anaesthesia with
tourniquet control. During surgery,
Zigzag incisions are made on the
skin surface and the flaps are raised
and the digits are separated up to
the web space.’

ven if there is a design behind his madness, it can be only
visible to him and those who tend to see these things
through the prism of purely partisan politics. For most people,
what Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is doing vis-a-vis the
higher bureaucracy is highly objectionable. He cannot sully the
reputations of senior officers and thus expect to browbeat the rest
into virtual servitude. That is no way to run a government. Nor
to expect cooperation of the bureaucracy without which the Aam
Aadmi Party cannot fulfill its promises to the voters.
Bad as it is to pick up a fight with the Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb
Jung to serve some ulterior motive, it is inexcusable to call senior
IAS officers as agents of business houses. But, it would seem, for
Kejriwal everything is par for the course so long as he is able to
have his way. The argument that Kejriwal ought to have final say in
the appointment of senior officers is well taken but there can be no
scope for riding roughshod over well-established rules governing
these appointments. Seniority being a crucial yardstick governing
these postings, the Delhi CM cannot disturb the hierarchy without
causing resentment in the entire civil service. Nor can he be opaque
in these matters.
Given that he himself was a mid-level IRS officer till he quit to
plunge full-time into the Ford Foundation-funded NGO-running,
the conduct of the Delhi CM is most surprising, to say the least.
Before picking on poor Shauntala Gamlin, a senior IAS officer of
the UT cadre who hails from the North-East, Kejriwal’s aides had
had run-ins with at least two other senior officers. In both cases,
the officers complained about AAP workers interfering in their
work. The fall-out of those avoidable clashes was still in the air
when Kejriwal initiated the confrontation over the appointment of
Shauntala as acting Chief Secretary in the absence of the incumbent
who had gone on leave for a mere ten days. When the LG consulted
the Delhi Government, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia did
not send the file back. Shauntala, who was the senior-most, was
thus named for the acting chief secretary. On Monday, the Delhi
CM physically locked out a senior officer from his office on the
ground that he had, following directions of the LG, issued the
order appointing Shauntala.
Locking out of office a principal secretary who issued orders
for the Chief Secretary’s appointment is taking things to absurd
levels; If Delhi were to gain by Kejriwal’s antics, all would be
forgotten. Any such likelihood decreases every time he makes his
point. Instead of any argument, what the AAP supremo triggers is
an irreverent attack. Pettiness leads to nastiness on both sides. The
governance debate at the heart of the confrontation loses out.

WASHINGTON:
The use of Shi’ite militias to try to
take back the Iraqi city of Ramadi
from Islamic State risks unleashing
more sectarian bloodletting, current
and former US officials said, but
Washington and Baghdad appear to
have few other options.
The prospect of Iranian-backed
militias leading efforts to retake Ramadi underlines Washington’s dwindling options to defeat Islamic State
in Iraq, with Prime Minister Haider
al-Abadi’s grip on power weak, a
national army still in its infancy and
Tehran increasingly assertive.
Islamic State’s capture of Ramadi,
despite months of US-led air strikes
and military advice, marked a fresh
low for the shattered Iraqi army,
which beat a chaotic retreat from the
city over the weekend.
Abadi immediately turned to the
Shi’ite militia groups, backed by
Iran, which together have become
the most powerful military force in
Iraq since the national army first
collapsed last June in the face of
sweeping Islamic State gains.

Secretary of State John Kerry
repeatedly stressed Washington’s
tough stance on North Korea on
Monday, warning that more sanctions were possible if Pyongyang
continues to pursue nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
He also characterized North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s leadership as one of the most ‘egregious displays ... anywhere on the
planet,’ citing ‘stories of grotesque,
grisly, horrendous public displays
of executions on a whim and fancy.’ If such behavior continues,
Kerry warned, the international
community could call for North Korea to be referred to the International Criminal Court. Last week,
South Korea’s intelligence agency
reported that it believes Kim swiftly
executed his close confidant and
the Sunni Iraqi city, according to local residents.

Metals on recovery
mode: ICRA
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 19:
International prices of aluminium,
copper and zinc have recovered in
the second quarter of the calendar
year 2015, said ICRA on Monday.
In a press release, ICRA said it
expected further recovery in international prices of these key nonferrous metals to be limited in the
near term, as an uneven and mixed
outlook for the major economies in
the world is likely to keep base metal
prices under check going forward.
Senior vice-president and cohead, Corporate Sector Ratings,
ICRA Jayanta Roy, stated, ‘While
international prices of both copper
and zinc have now recovered the
entire ground lost since the beginning of December 2014, aluminium
prices are still lower by around nine
per cent than the levels prevailing in
early December of last year’.
During CY2015, demand of aluminium and copper increased at
7-8 per cent world-wide, while zinc
witnessed a lower demand growth
rate of around 4.6 per cent. However, consumption growth of these
non-ferrous metals in the domestic
market showed a mixed performance in the financial year 2015
(FY2015).

Estimates likely to exceed health expenditure
Washington, May 19 (AFP):
The International Monetary Fund
voiced alarm on Monday about
energy subsidies across the world,
saying they were expected to reach
$5.3 trillion in 2015, more than government health spending.
‘These estimates are shocking’, the
IMF said in a report, noting the figures
were among the largest negative factors for economic growth it had ever
estimated, piling up adverse effects
on efficiency, growth and inequality.
The report estimated that this year’s
energy subsidies represent 6.5 per
cent of the global economy, likely
exceeding government health spending across the world.

LIC launches
children’s plan
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 19:
The Life Insurance Corporation
of India launched a children’s plan
Jeevan Tarun in the city yesterday.
Speaking to the media, Zonal
Manager T Sitharthan, said, ‘the
scheme aims to help children’s
needs pertaining to education and
marriage purposes’.
Children belonging to the age
group of three months (90 days) to
12 years can take up this plan. The
plan will reach the completion stage
at their age of 25. The minimum sum
to be paid will be Rs 75,000 and can
go up to any amount.
In the end of two years, the child
will be eligible for taking loans, it
is learnt.
‘For children’s educational needs,
in the installment basis as in five per
billion and Russia at $335 billion.
The report said that overall energy
subsidies had more than doubled
since 2011, the year covered by a
similar IMF report in 2013.
The IMF explained that more than
half of the increase was due to more
precise evidence of the damaging
effects of energy consumption on air
quality and health, such as premature
deaths.
‘The IMF has long argued that
getting energy prices right can help
national governments achieve their
goals not only for the environment but
also for inclusive growth and sound
public finances’, the report said.
The 188-nation Fund recommended countries increase energy prices
gradually to reflect their true costs,
an action it estimated would yield
fiscal gains of about 3.5 per cent of
gross domestic product. The additional gains would give governments
room to reduce some taxes, raise
growth-spurring public spending on
infrastructure, health and education,
and finance cash transfers for the
poor, it said.
The IMF in March conditioned
its $40 billion bailout program for
Ukraine in part on the government
undertaking energy sector reforms,
including reductions in energy subsidies.

Beijing, May 19 (PTI):
Calling for diversification of the ‘Make in India’ campaign into semiconductors
and electronics, US multinational computer firm Dell has said it looks to step up
investments in India specially in manufacturing of microprocessors and photo
voltaic cells. Amit Midha, Head of Asia-Pacific and Japan region for Dell, said,
‘Dell which has over 27,000 employees in India looks to invest in India more
specially in supply chain for semiconductors, manufacturing of microprocessors
and photo voltaic cells’, Midha, who is based in Shanghai, said.
Midha said Modi’s pitch for investments during China visit was first among
many steps which are required. Dell already involved in India where it has

Langer ‘no’ to coaching India
q Gillespie, Moody in frame to land England job
Sydney, May 19:
Former Australia Test batsman
Justin Langer ruled himself out
of the running for the India and
England coaching jobs by signing
a two-year contract extension with
Western Australia on Tuesday.
Langer had been linked with
both the job of replacing Duncan
Fletcher, whose contract with India
expired at the end of the World
Cup in March, and the position left
vacant after England sacked Peter
Moores two weeks ago.
‘I am flattered to be associated with
potential international coaching opportunities but the timing isn’t right for
my family and I still feel there is much
work to be done here in Western
Australian and Australian cricket,’ the
44-year-old said in a news release.
‘Having spent nearly 20 years on the
road with the Australian team as a
player and then coach, I respect what
an enormous commitment it is to be
away from your family for almost 12
months of the year.
‘There is no doubt I have aspirations
to coach internationally, but that will
depend upon timing and opportunity
in the future.’

Gavaskar backs Ganguly
as ‘team director’
New Delhi, May 19 (PTI):
Sunil Gavaskar feels that a man
of former captain Sourav Ganguly’s
‘capability’ should be used by the
BCCI in the running of Indian cricket
team provided the ‘Prince of Calcutta’ can find time from his busy
schedule.
Asked if Ganguly is the right
candidate to replace Ravi Shastri
as the overall head of support staff
(Team Director/High Performance
Manager), Gavaskar told NDTV,
‘Depends on the time he (Ganguly)
has. He has a lot of commitments.
Don’t forget that he is also the joint
secretary
of Cricket Association of Bengal
(CAB) which is a very time consuming job. But a man of his capability,
provided he has time, can bring a
lot of positivity.’
Gavaskar also made it clear that if
Ganguly is made the High Performance Manager or Team Director,
then the chief coach’s post doesn’t
hold much of a significance.
‘It all depends on how the BCCI
is looking at it. If Sourav becomes
High Performance Manager, then
he might just want a batting coach,
bowling coach and fielding coach of
his choice,’ said Gavaskar.
On a lighter note, Gavaskar did
not forget to mention that whoever
is the coach or High Performance
Manager won’t actually be put to test
as India will not be touring outside
the sub-continent in the next two
years for a full series.
‘The next two years are the best
time to become an India coach as
we will be playing so much cricket

Yorkshire batsman Joe Root has
been elected England Cricketer of
the Year for 2014-15 by British sports

The 24-year-old has scored 1,135

Paris, May 19:
Nine-times French Open champion
Rafa Nadal will no longer be regarded
as an ‘immovable obstacle’ at Roland
Garros this year, according to twice
former winner Jim Courier.
The American, who ruled the claycourt grand slam in 1991 and 1992,
has watched the Spaniard’s increasing vulnerability on the red dust with
interest in the build-up to the year’s
second grand slam which begins in
Paris on Sunday.
While Courier believes the best-offive-set format means Nadal remains
formidable, he makes world number

‘For the first time in many years
Nadal will not be the favourite going
into Roland Garros,’ Courier, who
will commentate on the tournament
for British channel ITV, said.

Novak Djokovic. Nadal is less vulnerable in Paris, given the best of five-set

Praise pours in for Messi
after Barca’s triumph
Barcelona, May 19:
Spain’s biggest selling sports daily
Marca summed it up in Monday’s
headline after Barcelona wrapped
up a fifth La Liga title in seven years
and their 23rd overall on Sunday:
‘Messi’s League.’
The Argentina forward scored a
typically brilliant goal to secure a 1-0
win at Atletico Madrid exactly a year
after last season’s champions pipped
Barca to the title with a 1-1 draw at
the Nou Camp on the final day of the
campaign.
Barca’s latest triumph was the first
part of a possible treble of Champions
League, domestic league and Cup
crowns, which Barca became the only
Spanish club to achieve in 2008-09
under Pep Guardiola.
Messi’s goal was his 41st in 37 La

Gillespie to meet Strauss
Former Australian paceman Jason
Gillespie is due to meet ECB officials
in the next few days to discuss the
vacant England coaching position.
Although Gillespie has expressed
his contentment in his current role
as coach at Yorkshire, he will meet
Andrew Strauss, England’s new
director of cricket, in the coming
week to discuss the role and is
believed to be open-minded about
his options. Not only would the
job come with a handsome pay
rise on
his current salary, but
whoever is offered it will be
given assurances
that they
will have
time to turn around the fortunes of
the England side.
With a tough year coming up - the
next four Test series are against
New Zealand and Australia (at
home) and Pakistan and South Africa (away) - all serious candidates
are likely to require such assurances after Peter Moores was sacked
after just 13 months in charge.
Gillespie, who was confirmed as
a candidate by Strauss last week,
is one of a quartet of Australians in
whom the ECB have shown some
interest. While Langer, ruled himself
out, Tom Moody (currently with Sunrisers Hyderabad, but previously Sri
Lanka coach) and Trevor Bayliss
(currently with Sydney Sixers and
Kolkata Knight Riders) remain strong
candidates.

Acknowledging that the balance had
shifted too far in favour of batsmen in
limited-overs format, the ICC cricket
committee recommended the removal
of batting powerplay besides allowing
five fielders outside the circle in the

The committee, headed by former

the ODI playing conditions, code of

concerned, illegal bowling actions, use
of technology and helmet safety among
other issues.
The committee reviewed the ODI

by Andy Murray in the Madrid Masters final the week before.
The 28-year-old Spaniard also lost
to Djokovic in Monte Carlo and has
looked nowhere near the player who
has lost only one match at Roland
Garros in 10 years of domination.
Djokovic, beaten in last year’s final
by Nadal, has been in electrifying
form and after beating Roger Federer
to win the Rome title on Sunday looks
to have a golden opportunity to complete his career grand slam.
That favourites tag will bring its own
pressures, though, and Nadal, who
will be seeded outside the top four,
is not the only threat to the Serb’s
hopes of a first French Open.
‘Murray is most certainly a threat to
go very deep and, if the draw breaks
in his favour, a final is attainable,’
Courier said.
‘Once you reach the final, anything
goes -- especially now that Nadal is
playing like a mortal on the clay again.
‘Kei Nishikori is my second favourite
behind Djokovic and I firmly believe
he is the second best claycourt player
today.
‘Also, Nick Krygios has the game,
aggressive energy and athletic ability to stir things up the way he did at
Wimbledon last year and in Australia
in January.’
Chelsea slumps
to West Brom
Cesc Fabregas is booked by the referee to make it a miserable night
for Chelsea.
London, May 19:
Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas
was sent off in bizarre circumstances
as the below-par Premier League
champions, playing with 10 men for
over an hour, slumped 3-0 at West
Bromwich Albion on Monday.
Saido Berahino struck twice for
Albion but the main talking point at
the Hawthorns was the first-half red
card shown to Spaniard Fabregas for
unsportsmanlike conduct by referee
Mike Jones.
The official was in the process
of booking Chelsea striker Diego
Costa after he tussled with Gareth
McAuley when Fabregas, standing
some 20 metres away, chipped the
ball towards a crowd of players and
it hit West Brom’s Chris Brunt on the
head, prompting Jones to walk over
and brandish a red card.
‘What Fabregas did didn’t hurt anyone, he shouldn’t do it but I don’t think
that the red card was fair,’ Chelsea
manager Jose Mourinho told the
BBC. The Portuguese said his side,
who won the title earlier this month
with three games to spare, had lost
‘concentration, intensity and motivation’ with nothing to play for.
In typical Mourinho fashion, however, he blamed Manchester City,
United and Arsenal for failing to
mount a sustained challenge.
Chelsea are eight points clear of
City going into their final match of
the season at home to Sunderland
on Sunday.
‘Am I guilty? Yes, but I think the
top contenders for the title are also
guilty, because they didn’t give us
a big fight. You can’t expect us to
get on the bus crying because we
lost 3-0, we are champions.’
Chelsea’s third league defeat of
the season -- the first two coming
at Newcastle and Spurs -- was
kickstarted by West Brom top scorer
Berahino’s fine curling strike from
outside the penalty area after nine
minutes.

US presidential bid
Washington, May 19 (PTI):
Setting his sights on the White
House, Indian-American Louisiana
Governor Bobby Jindal has formed
an exploratory committee to look into
the possibility of mounting a credible
challenge as a Republican nominee
for the 2016 US presidential bid.
If Jindal, 43, announces going
ahead with his plans, he would be the
first ever Indian-American politician to
run for a US Presidential election. In
doing so, he would join the already
crowded Republican presidential
aspirants.
Forming an exploratory committee
is considered to be the first serious
step toward a presidential bid. The
Republican Governor, however, said
he would make a final decision on
a White House bid after his state’s
legislative session ends in mid-June.
‘My parents came to this country
over 40 years ago with nothing
but the belief that America is the
land of freedom and opportunity.
They were right,’ Jindal said on his
website announcing the formation

to inherit fewer opportunities than
their parents. Will you join me?’ Jindal asked on the home page of the
website with the headline ‘Ready’.

Not wise to tamper
with player’s
technique: Amre 3
MUMBAI:
Credited for the success of
the likes Ajinkya Rahane, Robin
Uthappa and Suresh Raina by
the players themselves, former
India batsman Pravin Amre has
earned a reputation for helping
players grow, regroup and iron
out their flaws. He has also
been guiding Naman Ojha and
Dinesh Karthik amongst others,
besides coaching the Mumbai
State team. While he coaches
players who have already embarked on their international
cricket journey, he is also responsible for shaping young
talents like Shreyas Iyer, who
has played a crucial role for the
Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2015.
His wards like Rahane and
Uthappa have displayed a
knack for scoring consistently
across formats. In an interview
with iplt20.com, the playerturned-coach speaks about
customising solutions based
on a player’s natural approach
and style, and spells out keys
to batting consistently across
formats.
EXCERPTS:
1
Shreyas Iyer
Ajinkya Rahane
PERSPECTIVE ON THE TIMING VS POWER-HITTING
DEBATE: It depends and varies from player to player. Some
people are naturally like that. So we have to allow them to play
their natural game, but at the same time they should know
their responsibility for the team. And the responsibility makes
sure they focus more on the consistency. The T20 format
demands power but you have to play intelligent cricket.
Last year (2014) Robin was the highest run-getter. Our
goal was to hit more boundaries, not focus on the sixes
which is what helped him to get there. To me, even in
this format consistency is what matters most. Hitting
a boundary minimises the risk. It is about how you
minimise the risk and so you have to play smart cricket.
2
WORKING WITH
TH VAR
VARIOUS
PLAYERS: Raina, I think is a
fine and intelligent player in this
format. His statistics show that.
There is consistency, he knows
the need of the team and has his
own plan. Once a player has his
own plan I don’t disturb it. I give
inputs only if they have problem.
With Ajinkya we worked on
making the foundation strong.
The focus was more on technique, because many critics had
said he can’t be a T20 player.
But I feel that if your technique
is strong and your mental makeup is right you can perform in
any format.
With Shreyas Iyer it was different. I have been grooming
him from a young age unlike
Ajinkya, Raina, Naman (Ojha)
or Dinesh (Karthik). I remember
his first day at the nets. There is
a lot of emotion attached, but I
have to be tough. I am also the
one to criticise him a lot and he
knows it. I think he handled the
pressure of playing in the Ranji
Trophy well.
4
T20 BATTING AND PRESSURE: I look at everyy
s
case as a challenge and try to understand the player’s
personality to be able to find solutions. We agree thatt
technique is important, but at the same time delivering
is important, especially in T20. Today the batsmen are under
more pressure. There is little margin for error in T20. The pressure builds with every dot ball and it can force the player to play
a bad shot even if they have the technique. It is pertinent that
they back themselves. Once you have the technique you will
have other alternatives.
Taking the pressure off is particularly important. The mental
toughness, believing in themselves and the decision making is
important - to understand which ball to hit and which to leave. They
have to back their strengths rather than focus on the weakness
in this particular format. Every batsman has his own strengths;
we only have to make sure they realise what their strength is.
B
BEING THE COUNSELLOR: To get the thought that I want to work on this area,
and
an to get the processes right in the mind, is most important rather than teaching
t
technique.
To help them accept and understand the problem and then find the solution
to sort out whatever the issue is, is crucial. Then they also come in with energy and
the commitment which is required, because the drills are many and it could be tiring.

things that work against you. We need to be smart and back
ourselves. It’s a great occasion - Mumbai against Chennai.
It’s a difficult game and a tough place to win but that’s what
we are here for. We didn’t expect an easy game in a
playoff match and we have got a tough one.’
Further, discussing the pressure of playing at the
next stage, he added, ‘It’s about dealing with pressure. The beauty of being in qualifiers is that it gives
another chance and that just helps calm the nerves. It’s
a fine line. We saw David Warner step on the boundary
and in the end it probably cost his side going through.
It can be that fine, it can be one ball, it can be a small
moment, a bit of brilliance and that can be the difference between winning the tournament or going
home, and the consequence is that much more
when you reach the next stage. It has been an
excellent competition thus far and I think there
are a couple of more twists to go. The teams
that deal with the pressure and the individuals
that stand up will be the difference.’
Fortune Chicken Suimai (Dim Sum)
Chongqing’s
gift to
Chennai
N
o, we are not talking about the recent sister city agreement
signed by Chennai during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s
visit to China. This is about the variety of dishes offered by
Noodle King’s chain of restaurants in Chennai. It has introduced
85 new varieties of Chinese dishes in both vegetarian and nonvegetarian menu. Chef S Arvind Raja and his colleagues served
some interesting items on the menu to a News Today team at
Noodle King’s Pallavaram restaurant.
The lime and mint drink refreshed us first and increased our appetite.
The first in the line was the Dim Sum, commonly known as momos,
except that this is the Chinese version. Served in steaming hot baskets,
the filling was piping hot served with three varieties of spicy sauces.
As soon as this was over, the starters were on the way. The crispy
prawn salt ‘n’ pepper, deep fried with spices was a definite dig in.
The Malak fish strip was too tempting to draw a non-sea food lover.
The fish, Indian basa fillet was cut to broad strips and cooked in hot
dry chilly sauce. In the vegetarian, Five Spiced Crispy Corns is a
must to have. Filled with rare Chinese herbs, this was blended to
the Indian taste. The Honey Chilli Cauliflower is another signature
dish of the chef, who was personally around to make sure we knew
what we were eating. Generously roasted in honey and chilly sauce
this is a delight for vegetarian lovers. To give a relief between the
course, the soup dived in. This simple food was really simple as it
was tossed with vegetables and pieces of chicken.
Then came the main course which is authentic as it gets: the Mapo
Tofu-Lamb. Minced meat and Tofu in chilli soya sauce, flavoured
with szechuan pepper (commonly know as Chinese coriander) was
a good accompaniment with the veg and non-veg fried rice.
The steaming Char Kway Teow was an eye grabber. Served in
an oval, look alike sizzlers plate, this stir fried flat noddles with veg-

bean was a thumbs up.
The desert was a delight to wait
for (although we were practically
filled to the brim). We opted for
the fried ice cream. Small scoops
of vanilla ice cream deep
fried and topped with honey
completed the meal.
‘Though Chinese food is
not preferred everyday, people come out for it at least
once a week,’ says chief operating officer Aloke Totlani.
