Of course, the renovated I,

closed during the entirety
of the IPL season.
According to the Chennai
Metropolitan Development
Authority (CMDA) the three

is expected to work with the
the relevant State government departments on how to
regularise the construction
of the contentious stands.
As a starting point, the
MCC gym would be demolished and from then
on TNCA officials would
seek to get valid permission to operationalise the
three stands. The Supreme
Court’s verdict explicitly
tells TNCA to get ‘planning
permission from appropriate authorities’ before the
stands could be let open
to the public.
But in the event of such a
permission not forthcoming
from the officials, the TNCA
will have to face the mortification of seeing portions of
violations (in construction)
being practically demolished. ‘We hope the situation won’t go to that level,’
the source said.
Breather to Manmohan
in coal scam case
New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI):
In a relief to former Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh,
the Supreme Court today
stayed the trial court order
summoning him as accused in a case pertaining
to grant of Talabira-II coal
block in Odisha in 2005 to
Aditya Birla group company Hindalco.
The stay, which also applied to Hindalco Chairman
Kumar Mangalam Birla,
former Coal Secretary P
C Parakh and three others,
came after senior counsel
Kapil Sibal questioned the
legality of the summons to
the former Prime Minister
citing lack of sanction as
required under the CrPC
and contended that allocation of a coal block was an
administrative act without
any criminal intent.
We issue notice on all six
petitions. The trial court order
shall remain stayed, a bench
of justices V Gopala Gowda
and C Nagappan said after
hearing arguments by Sibal,
who represented the former
Prime Minister, and other
lawyers in the case.
82-year-old Manmohan
Singh’s daughters, Upinder
Singh and Daman Singh,
were present in the court
during the proceedings.
The bench also stayed the
proceedings before the trial
court and issued notice to the
Centre on a plea challenging
constitutional validity of section 13 (1)(d)(iii) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The other three summoned as accused are
Hindalco, Shubhendu Amitabh and D Bhattacharya,
its officials. All the six were
summoned by Special CBI
Judge Bharat Parashar to
appear before the court
on April 8. ‘I must confess
that I have not been able to
find out what is the illegal
act done by the petitioner
in the case,’ Sibal said at
the outset of the 35-minute
proceedings.
Sibal said it is not an
illegal act to allot a mine
contending that the administrative acts of the Prime
Minister cannot be faulted
on the ground that he did
not follow the recommendations or procedures
adopted by the screening
committee.
Komban: More twists to the tale

Chennai, Apr 1:
The travails surrounding

Elsewhere, actor Karthi’s
elder brother Suriya took to

Krishnaswamy had opposed the release of the
movie and grant of censorship certificate to it on
the ground that its story
revolved around animosity
between different caste

Special show
A special screening of the movie for the journalists
took place in Chennai this morning. A few of those who
watched the film said it did not glorify one community or
defame another.

with action, dance and drama, many
said.

senior counsel R Viduthalai
said that the petitioner had
made wild allegations even
without watching the movie.
After hearing arguments,
Justices S Tamilvanan

they shall pronounce their
verdict by afternoon today.
However Gnanavelraja
annnounced releasing the
movie today (a day ahead
of its scheduled release)
after the Censor Board
granted an ‘UA’ certificate
for the movie.
Speaking to News Today
Gnanavelraja, said, ‘The
movie had nothing to do
with caste animosity. We
always respect the laws
of the land. We got censor
certificate. We also arranged a special screening
of the film for a committee headed by two retired
judges of the High Court.
Unfortunately those who
appeared along with the
petitioners in the screening were not interested in
watching the movie and
were involved in delaying
tactics’.
Elsewhere, the other ticklish issue --- the presence
of Lankan cricketers in
Chennai ---- also seems
sorted out. The solution
arrived at is that they won’t
show up here. Like it was
the case in 2013 (The State
government had then written to the Prime minister seeking a ban on Sri
Lankans’ involvement in
the Chennai leg of IPL).
Since similar sentiments
prevail even now, the governing council of the IPL
has intimated to the franchises that the informal
ban on Lankan players in
Chennai stays.
Consequently, Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians),
Angelo Mathews (Delhi
Daredevils), Thisara Perera (Kings XI Punjab) --the three Lankan players
in the fray --- wouldn’t show
up here.
q Thousands witness Mylapore car feseival
V PADMASINI
Chennai, Apr 1:
Gaiety and colour marked the Ther festival of the
Mylapore Kapaleeshwarar temple today as always.
Even by 8 am, despite it being a working day, the South
Mada street was colorful with crowds. Devotees from
the surrounding areas of Mylapore had already begun
to make a beeline to the South Mada street from morning and stationed themselves at convenient shady
places to have a darshan of the deities as they came
in a procession seated on the chariot. Ardent devotees
made their way to the spot where the chariot stood and
offered their prayers along with flowers and coconuts.
A huge crowd of devotees moved in front of the chariot
on its journey. All of them constantly fanned themselves
to keep cool and also squirted water using packets occasionally to keep the road from getting too hot.
‘Attempts were made to pour water from the terrace
of a flat on South Mada street but since an electric
transformer stood right in front of the building it was
given up’, said Usha, one of the devotees.
Ritualistic exhibition of devotion, with no thought to the
dangers it posed to other devotees nearby seemed to be
the order of the day. Whether it was paying obeisance to
Lord Ganesha on the wooden chariot or Kapaleeshwarar
and Karpagambal on the huge car devotees preferred
to offer their prayers in a flamboyant way than quietly
expressing it through their hearts and mind.
Flowers and coconuts were offered in abundance. Several moved a few feet away from the car and lit camphor
on the ground and paid obeisance with folded hands to the
deities. Others who were several feet away from the main
car just could not contain their emotions and wait to give vent
to them when the car reached the place where they stood.
They lit the camphor on the center of the road adjacent to
where they stood and offered their prayers. Seeing a couple
of devotees following this practice, others followed suit. Devotees in a hurry had a glimpse of the deity, shot the spectacle
in their cell cameras and moved on.
Several devout residents offered cups of sweet pongal
and buttermilk as a gesture of hospitality.

Land issues
s things stand, Rahul will be the focus of attention at a massive
rally against the Land Bill in New Delhi on19 April, flanked
as he will be by his mother, sister Priyanka and a host of Congress
leaders hoping against hope that this would mark the resurrection
of the party in the eyes of the people. If Rahul carries it off well, it
would give Sonia’s movement to woo the farmers a fresh impetus, but
if he blunders along the way, as is his wont, he could well dissipate
whatever gains have been made by Sonia in the weeks during Rahul’s
absence from the scene. There is no denying, however, that this is
the best platform set up by Sonia for Rahul and the Congress. In
Parliament, the Modi Government’s biggest failing has been that
despite deputing over a dozen ministers and party functionaries,
it hasn’t been able to effectively counter the allegation that the
government is working for the rich and the industry, instead of the
common man.
In Modi’s defence, it can be said that he is keen to kick-start
reforms, create the right kind of environment for investment and
remove impediments that delay projects. Restrictions on buying
land are holding up projects worth nearly Rs. 20 lakh crore and the
industry is impatient for clearances. But this is an apparent truth that
the BJP has not been able to sell to the people, especially the farmers.
The speed with which it promulgated an ordinance to get over the
Rajya Sabha hurdle has made many in rural areas feel it is out to
bulldoze its way forward. With the need to replace the ordinance
with an Act, it now realises that it has gained little and has actually
strengthened fears against the legislation.
There is the option for the BJP to have the Bill passed in a joint
session of Parliament, in which it will doubtlessly have the numbers,
but it now realises how this would set the masses against it. There are
far too many BJP detractors in the opposition and if the opposition
rallies to the Congress’ side another time, it will be a setback from
which the BJP will find it hard to recover. As it is, the BJP’s allies,
the Shiv Sena and the Akali Dal, have been locking horns with it.
It would indeed be a huge embarrassment if, in a joint session, in
addition to the joint opposition, the BJP’s allies too break ranks to
vote with the opposition. The BJP on its part has consulted the RSS
and all constituents of the Sangh Parivar in a bid to ward off a possible
defeat and a consequent huge loss of face. A crucial second part of
the current session of Parliament lies ahead. The battle of perception
will sooner than later enter a decisive phase.

Cell phone video found among Germanwings wreckage
BERLIN:
What happened in the final moments before the ill-fated Germanwings Airbus A320 was intentionally crashed by the co-pilot in the
French Alps?
Thanks to one of the black boxes

the investigators have ‘heard’ the
details about the chaotic situation
inside the plane just before the
tragedy, but they may have never
‘seen’ what transpired inside.
However, given the extent of

BEIJING:
China’s land reclamation is creating a ‘great wall of sand’ in the South
China Sea, a top US official says,
leading to ‘serious questions’ on its
intentions.
US Pacific Fleet Commander
Admiral Harry Harris made the comments in a speech in Australia on
Tuesday night.
He said by pumping sand on to coral
reefs and adding concrete, China had
created ‘over 4sq/km (1.5 sq miles)
of artificial landmass’. China has
overlapping claims with neighbours
in the South China Sea.
It has been reclaiming land in contested waters - something it said last
year was ‘totally justified’ as it had
‘sovereignty’ over the area.
In recent months images have
emerged of Chinese construction on
reefs in the Spratly Islands to create
artificial islands with facilities that
could potentially be for military use,
including an air strip.
Several nations, including Vietnam,
the Philippines and Taiwan, also
claim ownership of territory in the
Spratly Islands.

Shameful incident
Sir,
It is reported that the dead body of a 11-year-old girl, who died due to
cancer in Bengaluru, was not allowed to perform the last rites, as the burial
ground was claimed by some people that the place belonged to them.
Though this family’s native place is Krishnagiri, they were living in Bengaluru for the past 30 years. Since no compromise was reached and the
family did not want to perform the rites at a distance place, they took the
body to Krishnagiri and performed the rites. The incident is shameful, and
is to be condemned.
Burial places are earmarked by the government. None have any right to
claim reservation on that place. The government should take steps to avoid
such occurrences to happen in future.

corpus of $37 million will be managed by SIDBI. It also entails technical assistance of a $4 million to
be implemented by SIDBI and $2
million to be implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited.
‘The objective of the project is
to support the GoI’s efforts to
transform the energy efficiency
(EE) market in India by promoting
increased level of EE investments,
particularly through
energy service performance contracting (ESPC) delivered
through Energy Service Companies (ESCOs)’, SIDBI said.
It will guarantee the
loans given by Banks/
financial
institutions/NBFCs
to ESCOs and ESCOimplemented projects to minimise
their risk perception.
It is estimated that the project is
expected to provide credit guarantee to more than 500 ESCO
implemented EE projects which
would mobilise financing of the
tune of $127 million.
Motor insurance
premiums go up
New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI):
Owning a vehicle would now pinch
pockets more, with third-party motor
insurance premiums set to rise for
two-wheelers, private cars and heavy
load carriers from today.
It is observed that the cost
inflation index (CII) has
increased by 9.05 per cent
over the previous year, i.e.
from939 in FY 2013-14 to
1024 in FY 2014-15.
‘The Authority hereby
notifies the premium rates
applicable to Motor Third
Party Liability Insurance
covers with effect from 1 April, 2015’,
said Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in
a notification.
The premiums are being revised
after a gap of three years.
Owners having third-party cover
for private cars of 1,000-cc capacity
would now have to pay premiums of
Rs 1,468 from Rs 784, those exceeding 1,000 cc but below 1,500 cc will
attract premium of Rs 1,598 (from Rs
925) and those above 1,500 cc at Rs
4,931 (from Rs 2,853).
‘Motor Third Party Liability
premiums are increasing but at the same time
insurance companies are
still losing money on the
portfolio.
‘In a free market scenario...each insurer
should be free to price
the product as per their
risk perception. That will
ensure that insurers who are committed to providing good service in
this portfolio have an opportunity and
incentive to differentiate their services
which no one may be willing to do in
a fixed price, loss-making scenario’,
said Pavan Dhingra, Director Prudent
Insurance Brokers.
Wipro to grab bigger share of IT spend
New Delhi, Apr 1(PTI):
As he retired from India’s third largest IT services firm
on Tuesday, Wipro CFO Suresh Senapaty said the
company is ready to grab a larger share of $8 trillion
global IT spending that will rise further.
Senapaty, who hung his boots at the Bangalore-based firm after 35 years, described his
journey as ‘enriching’ and ‘wonderful’.
‘My time with Wipro has been enriching as
well as wonderful. It has been an outstanding
place to work, learn and grow’, Senapaty said.
He added that being able to maintain an optimum
capital position for the company is one of his major
achievements. When asked about the changes he has
witnessed in the IT services market, he said: ‘IT
services space has seen so many changes and
today the spending is about $8 trillion and it
will rise further.
The Indian IT-BPM sector is just $118 billion. So it has a lot to achieve’.
Senapaty said he is leaving the company at
a time when it is in a more stronger position to
leverage its resources and capabilities to take
a bigger share of the global IT services market.

Yuvi, Zak eye comeback

New Delhi, Apr 1:
Hoping to make a comeback into the
Indian cricket team with stellar showings in the IPL, new Delhi Daredevils
recruits Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer
Khan today said they will make their
stint with the franchise count to revive
their international careers.
Mills follows Vettori
into retirement
Delhi bagged Yuvraj for a record
fee of Rs 16 crore in the February
auctions and the all-rounder wants
to make the most of it.
Definitely yes, it’s been a couple
of hard years for me since I have
come back from my treatment. I am
in good shape, I have worked very
hard and I have
had a good domestic season. I
am confident of
doing well and
hope that things
get better from
here and I make
it back into the team,’ Yuvraj said at
a function.
Zaheer was bought for four crore
by DD this season after the left-arm
pacer pulled out midway from IPL last

Mumbai Indians. Zaheer believes that
IPL will be a step in the right direction.

Lorgat denies media reports
We never interfere in team selction’
Wellington, Apr 1:
New Zealand pace bowler Kyle Mills
announced his retirement from all
cricket today, following Daniel Vettori
in calling it quits after the World Cup
final. Mills was consistently ranked
among the world’s top 10 one-day bowlers throughout his illustrious 14-year
career, and for a long time was ranked
number one. It’s been an honour and
privilege to play cricket for my country
over the past 14 years and I will miss it
greatly, the 36-year-old said.
‘However the time is right for me to
step away from playing this great game
and devote more time to my family
who have sacrificed so much for me
to keep playing the game I love.’ Mills
represented New Zealand in 170 ODIs
and took 240 wickets to be the Black
Caps’ second highest wicket-taker in
the shortened game behind Vettori,
who took 297.
Vettori announced his international
retirement on Tuesday when the New
Zealand side returned from Melbourne
after losing the World Cup final to Australia by seven wickets.
Mills took part in three World Cups, although in the latest edition he was one
of three members of the New Zealand
squad who did not take the field as the
Blacks Caps kept a largely unchanged
line up throughout the tournament.
He also played 42 Twenty20s and 19
Tests for his country.
‘Kyle has been a wonderful ODI
player over a long period of time and,
but for injury, would have played closer
to 200 games for New Zealand, New
Zealand Cricket chief executive David
White said.
Johannesburg, Apr 1 (PTI):

South Africa’s World Cup semifinal against New Zealand

Chief Executive Haroon

Responding
to reports in Afrikaans dai- l y

sent instructions to Proteas coach
Russell Domingo at 1 in the morning,
insisting that the coach, who is also a
member of the CSA selection panel,
add one more player of colour to
the squad.
It was widely speculated
that coloured player Vernon
Philander was included in
the team ahead of Kyle Abbott for the last clash.

Demolish three
stands in MAC: SC
New Delhi, Apr 1:
The Supreme Court has said that
the three stands (I,J,K) of the MA
Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai
will not be used for seating spectators during cricket matches
as they do not conform to
regulations and public safety
and their unauthorised parts
need to be demolished.
Your starting point was
wrong. You are not an average citizen constructing
one room or so, you are
TNCA. Everything smells
and everything stinks, a
bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and
Justice R.V. Ramana told the Tamilnadu Cricket Association which
owns the stadium, formerly called
Chepauk Stadium.
It asked the TNCA to submit to the
Chennai Municipal Corporation its
plan for the demolition of unauthorised structure.
Directing that the requirements of
setbacks must be complied with by
carrying out necessary demolitions,
the court said that once it is done,
the TNCA would inform the CMC
and seek inspection.
Asking the TNCA to take necessary steps to remove unauthorised construction to meet the
requirements of public safety,
the court said: If deficiencies
are found to be removed, then
CMC will act accordingly.
The court remained unimpressed when senior
counsel Amit Sibal appearing for TNCA urged the court to
allow them to use the three stands
as in past 21 matches held in the
stadium, spectators were seated
in them. The prospects of M.A.
Chidambaram Stadium holding
matches appeared to be dim as
court did not say anything on Sibal's
plea that they may be allowed to
hold matches in the stadium using
six other approved stands.
Cricket
why would I want to do that when I
know the team was confirmed and
already announced to the players
and team management at their usual
18h00 team meeting that evening?
Our media policy is not to respond
to speculative or false media reports
where unnamed sources are quoted,
but in this case, due to the damage
being caused to the reputation of
the Proteas, CSA and individual
players soon after a painful exit from
the World Cup, I feel it necessary to
speak out and make it clear that this
report is false,’ added Lorgat.
Harika shown
the exit door
Sochi, Apr 1:
Grandmaster Dronavalli Harika
missed out on winning opportunities and boweed out of the World
Women’s Chess Championship
after losing the 10-minute tiebreaker
against Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine
in the semifinals here .
Harika missed her chances in the
first game of the second set of tiebreak games and then was outplayed
in the second game to lose 0.5-1.5 in
10-minute chess.
Harika was unlucky not to win the
first game of the 10-minute game.
Playing white, the English Opening
led to level middle game but Harika
picked up her pace in the queen and
Bishops endgame. After winning
a couple of pawns, Harika was on
course to victory but an incredible
blunder on move 83 saw the advantage evaporate. Muzychuk pounced
on her chance to ensure parity. In the
second game, Harika lost after giving
up a handful of pawns in the endgame. Earlier in the day, Harika had
to bounce back in the rapid tiebreaker
in 2013, after a successful World Cup
campaign in 2011 with the South
African as India’s coach.
Gary is a very good coach and we
have spent a lot of time together,
so I hope that we are able to
replicate our success with DD
this time around. We know
his working style, even he
knows what to expect from
us. So hope that we combine well this season to turn
it around for Delhi this time
around, said Zaheer.
We are up for it. It’s
a new challenge. Lot of
new faces this time in DD, so
looking forward to it. We hopefully will
be able to turn this season around
for Delhi,’ he added. Yuvraj, who
last played an ODI for India in 2013,
believes it’s an important season not
only for his career but also for Delhi,
who ended last in the eight-team
event last year.
It’s an important season. I have
had a good domestic season
so hoping that I carry the same
form into the IPL. It will be different because T20 is a different
ball game,’ he said. Like Zak said
that DD did not do too well last
season, so it’ll be great that
as a unit we do well and help
the team move forward. Delhi
had some good first
three seasons, so
we hope that all goes
well and we live up to our
potential,’ he added. The Chandigarh-born Yuvraj, who has represented
India in 293 ODIs and 40 Tests, feels
at home in Delhi and hopes to give all
the love back to the fans.

Berlin, Apr 1:
Manchester United-target
Mats Hummels has said if he
ever transfers abroad it will
only be to the Red Devils after telling Borussia Dortmund
he is weighing up his future
options.
Borussia`s captain, 26, has
a Dortmund contract until
2017, but has long been courted by United, whose current
manager Louis van Gaal is
looking for a defensive leader
with the English giants poised
to table a bid, according to UK
media reports.
Germany centre-back Hummels told Monday`s edition of
German magazine Kicker that
he often thinks about moving
abroad, but gave Tuesday`s
edition of German daily Bild
a far stronger indication of his
Manchester thoughts.
If I was to transfer abroad
at some stage, then it would
only be to Manchester United,’
Hummels is reported to have
said.
Hummels agent, his father
Hermann, is a friend of United
boss Van Gaal from when
they both worked at Bayern
Munich, where Hummels
senior was youth team coordinator until 2012, while Van
Gaal was head coach from
2009 until 2011.
Dortmund CEO HansJoachim Watzke says the World
Cup-winner has informed them he
is weighing up his options.
Mats had a conversation with
(director of sport) Michael Zorc
and myself two weeks ago, when
he informed us that he is thinking
about his future, said Watzke.
That is completely legitimate.He
Mats Hummels
has a contract until 2017 and we
haven`t received an offer, therefore
we`re pretty relaxed.
Dortmund have endured a poor
season by their own high standards
as the 2011 and 2012 German
champions found themselves bottom of the table in February and
are now up to mid-table in the
Bundesliga.
Djokovic rallies, Venus loses
Novak Djokovic
Key Biscane, aor 1:
Before the first set ended Tuesday,
Novak Djokovic had busted a racket
in anger, drawn jeers from the crowd
and received two code violations,
which cost him a point penalty.
There were no further outbursts,
and as Djokovic’s play improved, so
did his mood. He rallied from a break
down in the second set and beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-0 in
the fourth round of the Miami Open.
‘The first set and a half, he was
dominating from the baseline,’’
Djokovic said. ‘I was frustrated and
nervous and wasn’t showing composure on the court.’
Dolgopolov led 4-1 in the second
set before Djokovic mounted a comeback to remain in contention for his
fifth Key Biscayne title. Dolgopolov
required treatment from a trainer after
the second set and lost 36 of the final
41 points.
Venus Williams’ recent resurgence

finals to No. 12-seeded Carla Suarez
Navarro 0-6, 6-1, 7-5. The 34-yearold Williams was broken six times in
the final two sets and double-faulted
twice in the final game.
‘Too many errors, and I was going
for it the whole match,’ Williams
said. ‘Toward the end, I just
never found the happy medium
between being aggressive and
putting the ball in the court.’
Williams is a three-time Key
Biscayne champion, but her
most recent title came in 2001.
Her sister, seven-time champion Serena Williams, will play in
the quarterfinals Wednesday
against No. 27 Sabine Lisicki.
With Rafael Nadal already eliminated and Roger Federer skipping
the tournament, the No. 1-seeded
Djokovic’s most likely opponent in
the final would be No. 3 Andy Murray,
who became the ninth active man to
win 500 matches by beating Kevin
Anderson 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The milestone made Murray’s victory especially
sweet. Afterward he was
presented with a cake large
enough to feed many of the
players he has beaten.
Murray will face unseeded Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals,
while Djokovic will play No. 6
David Ferrer.
Others advancing included
unseeded Juan Monaco and
No. 8 Tomas Berdych, who won when
No. 17 Gael Monfils fell, hurt his right
Venus Williams
hip and retired in the second set. No.
4 Kei Nishikori beat David Goffin 6-1,
6-2 and has lost 10 games in his three
matches.
Djokovic received a warning for
ball abuse early in his match, and
when he netted a forehand to fall
behind 5-4, he slammed his racket
against the concrete to earn a
second code violation. The crowd
hooted as he walked to his chair,
and Djokovic raised both arms in
response.
‘That was a gesture of just feeling
bad for what I have done,’ Djokovic
said. ‘I was fighting a battle inside
of myself, I would say. That was the
biggest battle that I fought today.’
Djokovic quickly regained his composure, but it took him awhile to find
his range against Dolgopolov, who
slices his groundstrokes as if hitting
them with a sand wedge.
‘He was playing well,’ Djokovic
said. ‘He has a very unorthodox
game - tricky opponent, mixes up
the pace, and can easily get you
out of the rhythm.’

India’s turn to
fight for net
neutrality
q TRAI seeks feedback
from internet users
NT Bureau
Chennai, Apr 1:
While net neutrality may have
a secure future in US, its fate in
India will be decided upon soon.
India does not have an existing
legislation for net neutrality. Feeling threatened by ‘Over the Top’
(OTTs) players such as Whatsapp,
Viber and Skype, the Telecom
Regulatory Authority of India
(TRAI) released a consultation paper recently on regulatory framework of OTTs asking stakeholders
(internet users, internet service
providers, telcos, industry bodies)
for comments and feedback on the
issues. This would help the body
make a decision on subjecting
internet services to an additional
licensing fee and whether these
providers should pay telcos for
using their internet pipes.
Akash a net neutrality campaigner who works at an IT firm in the
city said, ‘The thing about telecom
companies is that their aims are
simple enough - money. For them,
charging for specific services/
platforms makes a lot of financial
sense-imagine, paying Rs 20 to
access Facebook, another 15 to
access Twitter, maybe 40 to access Whatsapp.’
‘The whole point of the internet
seems wrong then,’ he said.
Recently Bharti Airtel had announced differentiated pricing for
voice calls over the internet but
pulled back the plan after online
protests by users who said Airtel
was violating the principles of net
neutrality. This was after Whatsapp recently added the free voice
calling feature to its Android app.

The Shiv Sena today came in defence of Maharashtra minister Girish

Fresh rainfall
lashes J&K
q ‘Army ready to handle situation’
Srinagar, Apr 1:
Flood fears resurfaced in Jammu and
Kashmir on Wednesday after fresh
rainfall was reported in Srinagar.
Rainfall which began last night and is
expected to continue for next two days,
can again cause surge in the water of
level of River Jhelum and its tributaries,
officials said.
The Met department has forecast
light to moderate rains today, raising
fresh concerns among people who
were hoping to see the end of woes
caused by floods.
Director of Indian Meteorological
Department in Jammu and Kashmir,
Sonam Lotus, said that Western Disturbance is persisting over J&K and by
evening, its intensity might increase
leading to more rainfall. Lotus added
that tonight is crucial for the state.
Lotus further said that besides
Kashmir, many hilly areas may experience moderate to heavy rainfall.
Water level in river Jhelum was also
receding and it was flowing at 15 feet
at Ram Munshi Bagh (Srinagar) and
at 12 feet at Sangam (Anantnag)
today (Wednesday) morning.
General Officer Commanding of
Chinar Corps, Lieutenant General
Subrata Saha has said the Army has
its operating bases all across the
state to handle any situation arising out of the flood-like situation in
Jammu and Kashmir.

Users in
millions
As on January 2015, WhatsApp
had 700 million users, all over
the world and 30 billion messages were sent on a daily
basis.
SMS traffic in India has
dropped from 5346 million in
2013 to 4367 million by 2014
end, a drop of 18.3 per cent.
Why telcos
scared?
According to TRAI, as
of December 2014, WhatsApp topped the messaging application market with
52 per cent of all users using OTT messaging services in India, followed by
Facebook Messenger with
42 per cent, Skype with 37
per cent and WeChat with
26 per cent share.
It is also mentioned that
in 2013, Skype carried
214 billion minutes of
International Calls within
their worldwide network.
This is almost 40 per cent
of the global telecom
market, and within this
year, Skype will actually
overtake the traditional
telecom firms in International calls usage.
Telecom firms have said
that OTTs are single handedly
eating their
revenues using their platform, and they
want to implement licenses
and regulations to
milk money from OTTs.

348 Indians evacuated
from strife-torn Yemen
q Four more ships to join rescue operation
New Delhi, Apr 1:
Indian Navy Tuesday night evacuated 348 Indians from strife-torn Yemen.
INS Sumitra rescued the Indian nationals after New Delhi got permission
to dock its ship at the Aden harbour
for the evacuation of its citizens from
the sea port city as the government
launched a massive air and sea
evacuation operation for its over 4,000
nationals in war-torn Yemen.
The Indian Navy ship departed last
night for Djibouti with first batch of Indians evacuated from Yemen by sea.
It is scheduled to reach Djibouti today
morning. The news was confirmed by
the External Affairs Ministry through
its Twitter account. The evacuation operation took place amid the escalating
violence in Yemen. Saudi-led coalition
war planes have struck pro-Iranian
rebels in Yemen with the Islamic
kingdom threatening to send ground
troops which could potentially initiate
a broader sectarian conflict in the Middle East. Two warships have also
been pressed into service besides
two other passenger ships while the
Indian Air Force has put on standby two C-17 Globemaster transport
aircraft. Air India has also stationed
two 180-seater Airbus A320 planes in
Muscat for evacuation of Indians from
Yemen’s capital Sanaa to Djibouti
whenever a clearance is given by the
concerned authorities.
The Defence sources said four
ships, including destroyer INS Mumbai and stealth frigate INS Tarkash -will reach Yemen by Saturday. Two
merchant vessels - Kavaratti and
Coral - have also been dispatched.
The four ships are to join each other
in Arabian Sea on 2 April and proceed as a composite group to Djibouti.

Mustafa Kamal
resigns as ICC
president
New Delhi, Apr 1:
Mustafa Kamal of Bangladesh on
Wednesday resigned from the post
of ICC president over World Cup
trophy presentation snub, accusing
colleagues within the game’s global
body of acting ‘unlawfully’.
‘The main reason for my resignation
is that I can’t work with those who can
act unconstitutionally and unlawfully,’
he told reporters in Dhaka.
Kamal announced his resignation in a brief talk with the media in
Dhaka. He also questioned India’s
victory against Bangladesh in the
quarterfinal.
Kamal was also critical of the role
of ICC chairman N Srinivasan and
India in the International Cricket
Council.
Earlier, Kamal had made a stinging criticism about ‘umpiring bias’
during Bangladesh’s quarterfinal
loss to India in the World Cup. In
that match, India’s Rohit Sharma
was not given out to a Rubel Hossain delivery which apparently
looked a ‘touch and go’ decision.
The simmering row within the ICC
took an ugly turn on Monday with
Kamal threatening to expose ‘mischievous’ designs of some people
who had denied him the ‘constitutional right’ to hand over the World
Cup trophy.
NC slams
State govt
Jammu, Apr 1 (PTI):
Opposition National Conference
today accused the state government
of discriminating against the Kashmir
Valley over the distribution of power
sector funds as they disrupted the
proceedings of the Assembly, forcing
the Speaker to marshal them out and
adjourn the House for ten minutes.
As soon as the House started its business of the day, NC members created
a ruckus in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly over the release of funds for the
repair of damaged transformers. The
government planning department yesterday released an amount of Rs 3.5
crore for the repair of damaged power
transformers in the state, out of which
Rs 2.5 crore was released for Jammu
and Rs 1 crore for Kashmir Valley.

HIS MASTER’S VOICE
he birth of Mahaveera, twenty
fourth and the last Tirthankara of
present time cycle is celebrated as
Mahaveer Jayanthi tomorrow.
According to Jain texts, Mahaveer was
born on the thirteenth day of the bright
half of the moon in the month of Chaitra
in the year 599 BCE. Mahaveer was born
into the democratic kingdom of Vaishali,
where king was chosen by voting.
Mahaveer was born into royalty as the
son of King Siddartha of Kundgraam
and Queen Trishala. During pregnancy,
mother Trishala was believed to have
had a number of auspicious dreams,
all signifying the coming of a great soul.
Astrologers interpreted these dreams
claimed that the child would become
either an emperor or a Tirthankara. It is
said that when queen Trishala finally gave
birth to Mahaveer, the God-king Indra
bathed the newborn himself with celestial
milk, a ritual essentially marking him as
a Tirthankara.
During the day, Jains engage in some
sort of charitable act in the name of Mahaveera while others travel to temples to
meditate and offer prayers. Lectures are
typically held in temples to preach the
path of virtue as defined by Jainism. Donations are collected in order to promote
charitable missions like saving cows from
slaughter or helping to feed poor people.
According to Mahaveera, to live a righteous life one should follow the following
principles, which are the main pillars of
Jainism.
Non-violence (Ahimsa) causing no harm
to living beings; truthfulness (Satya) to
speak the truth, non-stealing (Asteya)
not to possess things that does not
belong to you; Chastity (Bramacharya)
not to indulge in sensual pleasures and
non-attachment (Aparigraha) not to get
attached to material things.
According to Mahaveer, one should not
accumulate bad karmas (deeds) which
are the main cause of human delusion
and suffering and lead to vicious cycle
of life and death and continues till one
is liberated.
The most important places of celebration of Mahaveer Jayanthi are Gujarat
and Rajasthan. Gujarat is said to have
to maximum number of Jain shrines.
They are also the states where highest numbers of Jains reside. In India,
Gujarat holds the biggest fair for this
festival. Palitana and Girnar are some
of the most significant places of worship of the state. Yet Vaishali, in Bihar,
being the birth place of Mahaveer, has
its own importance and also celebrates
this Jayanthi significantly.
