q Aussies weather mid-innings wobble, rack up 328
Sydney, Mar 26 (PTI):
Steven Smith’s brilliant century
propped up Australia before Indian
bowlers staged a comeback of sorts
but the hosts still managed to post
a commanding 328 for seven in the
second semi-final of the ICC Cricket
World Cup here today.
This was the highest total by any
team against India in this edition of the
mega-event as the Australian batsmen dominated proceedings for the
major part to become the first team to
post a 300-plus score in a World Cup
semifinal.
This was also the only time that Indian
bowlers failed to take all 10 wickets
of the opposition team and the rivals
managed to score a 300 plus score
after winning the toss.
Smith batted like a man possessed
as the Indian attack looked pedestrian
for the first time in front of the local boy
whose 105 came off only 93 balls with
11 boundaries and two sixes.
Aaron Finch, who played the role
of sheet anchor to perfection with a
patient 81 off 111 balls that had seven
fours and a six, added 182 off 31 overs
for the second wicket with Smith.
Later, Mitchell Johnson played a superb little cameo scoring 27 off 9 balls
(4x4, 1x6) that helped the hosts cross
the 320-run mark.
It was the first time that Indian pace
attack was put to sword as the trio of
Umesh Yadav (4 for 72 in 9 overs), Mohammed Shami (0 for 68 in 10 overs)
and Mohit Sharma (2 for 75) were hammered into submission due to some
poor planning as well as execution.
However, it was Ravichandran Ash-

doctor and wedded another woman in
Chennnai, a year later. He also reportedly forced his ‘wives’ to pay dues for
his new house and had threatened to
kill one of them.
In a similar incident, a man in
Bengaluru made news for having
cheated four women in three different cities, borrowing large
sums of money from each.
It may be noted that while
it is not only the men who indulge in these kind of con-marriages,
women too have been caught for
similar fraud activities.
Last week, a woman and her gang
was arrested for trying to extract
money from a senior citizen, after
promising to mary him.
A few weeks ago, a woman in
Mogappair was accused of marrying
ten businessmen through online matrimonial sites, and later fleeing, but
not before swindling lakhs of money
from each.
Speaking on this issue, advocate
Tamil Poonkuyil Mozhi said,
‘We all know that only
one marriage is legally
permitted. The reason for
cheating in a relationship
or in marriage is the lure of
money and the urge to earn it
at the earliest. I always find a lot of
women being victims, which makes it
necessary for them to be more careful towards selecting their partners.
Also, if they find their spouse cheating on them, they have to notify the
police immediately’.
‘In Srinivasan’s case, he was caught
only after his fourth wife lodged a
complaint. His other three wives
would have probably wanted social
security and preferred to bear with
him’, she added.
‘As long as there are people who
are cheated, there will be people who
cheat’, she stated.
City counsellor Khushali Manikandan
also stresses on the need for women to
exercise caution while choosing a man.
‘Marriage seems like a shortcut way
to earn money, hence loyalty which is
the foundation for any marriage goes
for a toss’.
Voicing similar views is social activist
Aarthi who says, ‘Marriage is becoming
a business these days. The expectations in matrimonial sites in terms
of salary and property clearly show
money playing an important role in
relationships’.
could stop Australia from racing away
to a total in the range of 350 which
looked possible when Maxwell started
tonking the seamers.
The Australian innings was all about
Smith’s approach and the manner in
which he tackled the Indian bowling
which has been a dominant force
throughout the tournament.
So simple yet effective was Smith’s
approach at the crease that it never
seemed he was scoring at a rate of
more than run-a-ball yet he did it with
elan. The 100 came off 89 balls.
The floodgates opened in the 10th
over of the Australian innings bowled
by Yadav when Smith smashed him for
four boundaries. Umesh’s first spell of
five overs went for 39 with six boundaries and a six taken off his bowling.
It started with a cover drive and ended
with a hat-trick of pull-shots as Yadav
repeatedly erred in length bowling too
short.
With each and every shot, the common Australian sports anthem ‘Come
on Aussie Come on’ sang by a motley
bunch had more impact than the ‘Jeetega bhai Jeetega’ from the Indian fans.
The Australian innings started to gain
momentum after that. While Finch
worked out the singles and doubles
with occasional boundary, Smith
pulled anything that was slightly short
in length. The chip over mid-wicket off
Ravindra Jadeja was sheer class.

Honey trap for money
SRINIDHI VASUDEVAN
Chennai, Mar 26:
The big fat Indian wedding is always
associated with a huge sum of money,
gold and luxurious cars in the form of
gift, or dowry. But, with the growing
need and greed for money, marriage
is now increasingly being used as a
medium to acquire money, through
cheating.
A few days ago, police arrested
Srinivasan, a 38-year-old married
IT professional who cheated four
women in different parts of the State.
He had borrowed money, gold and
property from the women, before
dumping them.
He is alleged to have married a
woman in Madurai, later abandoning
her for another from Kanyakumari. He

teven Smith seems to have taken a liking to the
Indian bowling, it seems. The right-hander carved
out a century to power Australia before the Indian
bowlers staged a comeback of sorts in the second
World Cup semifinal at Sydney today to restrict the
co-host to 328.
This was the highest total by any team against India
in this edition of the mega-event as the Australian
batsmen dominated proceedings for the major part
to become the first team to post a 300-plus score in
a World Cup semifinal.

Aaron Finch, who played the role of sheet anchor
to perfection with a patient 81 off 111 balls that had
seven fours and a six, added 182 off 31 overs for the
second wicket with Smith.
Meanwhile, the semifinal encounter meant that
things came to a virtual standstill as cricket fans not
only found reasons to stay away from work but also
traffic in Chennai wasn’t as busy it always during the
middle of the week.
Shops dealing in white goods were centres of attraction as curious fans gathered to get an update on
the match situation at various locations in Chennai.

Harsh Vardhan said that prediction
of monsoon and reading of patterns
will become easier in the future with
the launch of Polar Remotely Operated Vehicle (PROVe)
Speaking after the launch of
‘PROVe’ developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) here, the Minister said,
‘We have taken the polar plunge.
PROVe and its subsequent versions
will enable us to understand the
Polar influence on ocean currents
affecting the movement of Monsoon winds on which much of our
economy depends.’
‘PROVe’ is expected to help
scientists study polar influence on
ocean currents believed to have an
effect on Indian monsoon cycles.
It was deployed and tested suc-
cessfully for results in the shallow
Priadarshini Lake at a depth of 64
metres, located within one of India’s
Antarctic bases - Maitri in February.
Harsh Vardhan lauded the engineering effort behind the manufacture of the generator-sized vehicle.
Secretary for MoES Shailesh Nayak
said PROVe showcases the capacity building of India. ‘This puts us on
equal terms with countries like Japan,
USA, France and others,’ he said.
PROVe will collect data for analysis in June 2015 which would be
subsequently put to use to prove the
hypothesis about the link between
Antarctic Ocean currents and Indian
monsoon system.
Harsh Vardhan interacted with
scientists and technicians of ESSO-NIOT and was briefed on the
progress of research on coastal
zone management. He urged them
to keep in mind environmental
concerns.

he suspected rate increase by the US Federal Reserve Bank
might have been pretty long in coming but it does seem to be
around the corner now. Last week, the Open Market Committee of
the Fed met and took a significant decision. It deleted a key word,
‘patience’, from its policy stance on bank rate for the first time in
years. This was the strongest indication that Fed’s zero interest rate
policy might be about to change. Though the Fed had cautioned
that after it fully tapers off quantitative easing, it might consider
increasing the bank rate, this had been put off from one meeting
of the OMC to the next, beginning from the time Janet Yellen took
charge early last year.
Since then, the US economy has further improved, offering
conditions for change in the zero interest rate policy. It is notable
that given the stellar role of the US dollar in the global economy,
all along, the Fed had taken care to keep the surprise element out of
its policy stand on rates. Yellen and her predecessor, Ben Bernanke,
had given early notice of ending quantitative easing. Since the Fed
issued government paper to increase liquidity to boost sentiment,
this caused billions of dollars to flow in diverse markets, including
India. Indeed, in the initial stages there were tremors in the Indian
stock exchanges when the Fed first talked of an end to quantitative
easing. Since then, the Indian share markets seem to have factored
in that the Fed might soon be thinking of raising the rates. Hence,
the somewhat lukewarm behaviour of the Sensex in recent weeks.
The Fed has clearly been enthused by the good news on the jobs’
front in the US. For the first time in several years, the employment
rate in the US is down to manageable limits. The US is probably the
only major economy in the western world which is set to grow at
a decent three per cent per annum, while the European economies
are in the grip of a sharp slowdown and even the Chinese economy
is set to register a noticeable drop in growth.
Admittedly, under the able stewardship of Raghuram Rajan, the
RBI has fortified itself against the likely upward revision in the Fed
rate. Happily, the current account deficit is down thanks to a sharp
drop in the prices of crude oil and commodities. The rupee is more
or less stable against the dollar while it has gained significantly
against the Euro and the British Pound Sterling. The European
Union being India’s single largest trading partner, a strong rupee
can further dampen exports, especially when the EU economies
are facing internal problems, including continuing differences with
Greece over re-arranging its debt to Germany and the European
Union Bank.
It is remarkable that the RBI has in recent months taken a conscious
decision to bolster foreign exchange reserves further in order to be
able to meet any eventuality, including the feared EU crisis in the
event of failure to reach settlement with Greece. On the whole,
global conditions seem to be quite benign for the Indian economy,
though we need to be prepared for sudden changes in crude and
commodities prices.

TN budget: Industry
impressed a lot
‘Single window portal to attract global investment’
‘State emerging as manufacturing hub’
NT Bureau / PTI
Chennai, Mar 26 (PTI):
Industry bodies of Tamilnadu
hailed the measures announced
in the State budget 2015-16, presented by Chief Minister O Paneerselvam on Wednesday.
Among the other highlights of the
Budget, one announcement that
has met with all-round praise is the
move to set up an Industry Investment Portal as a single window
mechanism, that would facilitate
investors to obtain all requisite
licenses and permissions from various departments.
It may be noted that this announcement comes at a time when
the State is gearing up for the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in May.
The event to be held in the city on 23
and 24 May, is expected to provide
a huge fillip to the State, with about
Rs 42,000 crore worth projects likely
to be signed.
Seen as a move to make business
‘easy’ in the State, the initiative
which will reportedly be launched
this year, will ‘re-engineer government business processes in
commencing new ventures, so as
to bring in simplification, transparency and to track applications for
monitoring their disposal within the
stipulated timeframe’.
This is what industry experts have
to say..
CII Tamilnadu chairman S N
Eisenhower: The announcement
to establish an entrepreneurial and
business acceleration centre in
public private partnership mode by
the Entrepreneurship Development
Institute in partnership with CII will
be a major step towards promoting of
‘entrepreneurial culture’ in the State.
TN on top in
leather biz: Study
NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 26:
Tamilnadu has emerged on top
with highest share of about 35 per
cent in total leather and leather
products’ exports from India as of
2012-13, according to a recently
concluded sector-specific study by
apex industry body Assocham.
‘About 42 per cent of the registered
factories in leather and related
products’ category are concentrated in Tamilnadu alone’, noted
the study titled ‘Leather & leather
products sector in India: Strategy to
facilitate exports,’ conducted by The
Associated Chambers of Commerce
and Industry of India.
‘However, growth of leather and
leather products’ exports from
Tamilnadu has declined by over
seven per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y)
i.e. from 17.6 per cent in 2011-12 to
10.5 per cent in 2012-13’, according
to the study prepared by the Assocham Economic Research Bureau
(AERB). Besides, Tamilnadu is also
ranked third after Uttar Pradesh and
West Bengal in terms of per-capita
labour productivity worth about Rs
10 lakh, highlighted the study.
Tamil Nadu is also ranked third in
terms of per-factory employment as
on an average each leather factory
in the State provides employment
opportunity to about 61 workers as
against 101 in Uttar Pradesh and
64 in West Bengal.
Govt’s new mantra:
Open software
New Delhi, Mar 26 (PTI):
The government will soon notify the ‘open software policy’
as it looks to bring in increased transparency in administration, Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar
Prasad on Wednesday said.
The move will
also help startups to participate
in creating
new open software source
and generating
jobs, he said.
‘Many big platforms
like Facebook also run on open software source. Therefore, we
are making India’s policy decisions to sync with the new
movement world over’.
The Minister said under the new policy, all future
requests for proposals of e-governance projects shall
include a mandatory clause for considering open source
software (OSS) as a preferred option. ‘Suppliers and
vendors shall provide justification for exclusion of OSS
in their response’, he said.
The new policy will also help in bringing down the costs
of the government’s ICT projects as a lot of licensing cost

Also, the announcement of withdrawing the input tax credit reversal
would make the manufacturing
industries more competitive.
Southern India Chamber of
Commerce (SICCI) Tamilnadu
president, Jawahar Vadivelu: The
announcement for the creation of
an Industry Investment Portal will
surely improve the ease of doing
business and help bring investments into Tamilnadu.
We welcome the government’s
commitment to support the manufacturing sector by not imposing
any new taxes and the proposal to
establish a Data Analytics Unit- a

Mumbai, Mar 26 (PTI):
With the rising smartphone and
tablet penetration, the mobile gaming industry is expected to touch Rs
2,620 crore by 2019, with a yearon-year growth of 20 per cent over
the next five years, according to an
industry report released here on
Wednesday said.
The mobile gaming market has
grown from
Rs 820 crore
in 2013 to Rs
1,070 billion in
2014, since more and more women
gamers are coming on board, stated
a KPMG report released at FICCIFrames 2015 here.
‘New and creative games appealing
to various age groups and catering to
a range of interests are being developed. This is likely to change the user
demographics with younger gamers
and more females getting on board
along with a new category -- the mom
gamers’, the report stated.
Though mobile gaming is growing
faster than any other gaming category,
developers are still figuring out means
to monetise this platform, the report said.
‘While the free-to-play simple mobile
games appeal to a broader audience,
the report noted that the mobile
gamer is averse to paying for mobile
games despite the healthy growth
rate’, the report stated.

Balance, composure key
to Kiwis’ success
Coach Hesson happy faith in Elliott paid off
Auckland, Mar 26:
The calm, assured manner in which
New Zealand chased down South
Africa’s imposing total on Tuesday
to advance to their first cricket World
Cup final is a hallmark of a team that
has developed into a cohesive unit
over the last two years.
Brendon McCullum’s side sealed
a four-wicket win over South Africa when Grant Elliott swatted Dale
Steyn over deep mid-wicket for a six,
igniting euphoric scenes rarely seen
at a New Zealand sporting event.
‘I looked around the group and saw
that everyone was pretty calm,’ McCullum told reporters on Wednesday
of how his team dealt with the intense
pressure of the match situation.
‘I was pretty calm for most of it but
towards the end I started hoping ...
the boys would be able to pull it off.
‘I had immense faith in them.’
Faith is exactly what coach Mike
Hesson had in Elliot, whose innings
of 84 not out justified his inclusion in
the World Cup squad after somewhat
surprisingly having been out of the
Mike Hesson
team for 14 months.
The 36-year-old was also a reassuring voice for powerful youngster
Corey Anderson as they put on 103
runs for the fifth wicket, which ultimately gave New Zealand the win.
The partnership highlighted the
strength of New Zealand’s batting lineup, with a top order
of
McCullum, Martin Guptill
and Kane Williamson offering contrasting approaches
to run scoring.
Guptill is technically proficient but can also blast
away when needed, as was
evident in his World Cup
record 237 not out against West
Indies in the quarter-final.
Williamson is the classic accumulator while McCullum’s swaggering
aggression puts opposing attacks off
their rhythm and gives New Zealand
a flying start.
The players from four to seven
-- Ross Taylor, Elliott, Anderson
and wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi
-- are a highly competent engine
room designed
to take the team
through to imposing totals or
to chase down targets.
Brendon McCullum
All have contributed to helping their
side to victory over
New Zealand’s
domestic summer.
Opening bowlers Trent Boult
and Tim Southee are
arguably the best newball pair at the tournament, with
Boult the leading wicket taker with
21, while Southee has the best
figures of 7 for 33. ‘We have been
confident all along in terms of what
we do,’ Hesson said. ‘We know the
brand of cricket we want to play, we
are pretty confident that is a good
style for us. ‘We have got a chance
to put on a good show on Sunday
and we will prepare for that.’
No issues in playing
under Cook: KP
London, Mar 26 (PTI):
Star batsman Kevin Pietersen says
he has no issues to play under England Test captain Alastair Cook
and coach Peter Moores as he
prepares for a national recall
by resuming county cricket
at Surrey.
Pietersen was axed by England and Wales Cricket Board
last year, but chairman Colin
Graves gave him hope when he
suggested that a return to county
cricket would enhance the batsman’s
chances of earning an England recall.
The 34-year-old, who has given up
on his IPL contract to join Surrey, said
he would want to have a fresh start.
Wozniacki opens
up on McIlroy split
London, Mar 26:
Former world number one Caroline
Wozniacki says she felt like someone
close to her had died after the split from
golfer Rory McIlroy last year.
The Dane was quoted by Britain’s
Independent newspaper as saying
her world was turned upside down
when the Northern Irishman ended
their relationship in May after wedding
invitations had been sent out.
‘In my head I had everything until
that moment,’ said Wozniacki. ‘I had
a great career, I was getting married, I
have a perfect family. There was really
nothing going against me. I was happy,
very happy.

‘For 14 months it has been very
painful to think I would never play for
England again and my career had
come to a sad, premature end. After
all the wonderful days I enjoyed
with England, the trophies we
won and the runs I scored,
I was devastated to end
my international career in
the manner in which it happened,’ Pietersen wrote in
The Telegraph.
‘But when I heard Colin Graves
say that I would be considered for
selection again if I play county cricket
and score runs I realised I had the
opportunity for a fresh start,’ he said.
‘I will be meeting Mr Graves face to
face. I think he is open to discussing
drawing a line in the sand in terms of
what’s gone on. It is something I desperately want. A lot of people thought
I would not be prepared to put in the
hard yards and play county cricket but
I will do anything to get that England
cap back on my head.’
He clarified that he never had issues
with Cook and Moores.
‘A lot has been said about my book,
but my side of the story had to come
out. To make it clear, I never had any
issues with Alastair Cook. I said in my
book that I was disappointed he could
not look me in the eye during that
meeting but there is no issue with me.

London, Mar 26:
Ravi Bopara has delivered a damning verdict of England’s World Cup
campaign, saying ‘a fear of failing’
hampered the side in Australia and
New Zealand.
The Essex all-rounder was
dropped before their opener
against Australia in favour of
Gary Ballance as England were
thrashed by 111 runs in Melbourne.
England were knocked out
of the competition before the
quarter-finals after losing
to Bangladesh by 15 runs
in their penultimate pool match but
Bopara is hopeful the squad can
bounce back.
‘It was frustrating to watch the way
we played,’ he told Sky Sports News
HQ. ‘I don’t think we played with much
heart; I felt like there was a fear of
failing. I’m not sure where that came
from or why but it was certainly there
and I’m just being honest.
‘I support my team-mates, they are
a great bunch of guys and I want to
play with the same guys and
improve as a team. Everyone
wants to get better in that team
and we’re honest about it and
we should be.’
Bopara also denied he feared for his
England chances with
Peter Moores in charge
and said being dropped did
not affect him as badly now.
‘I’ve got to the stage where I don’t
fear anymore,’ he added. ‘I’ve been
dropped so many times that I’m immune to it a little bit, although it’s
always sad when you get dropped.

IRNSS-1D satelite to provide accurate info on Indian border
NT Bureau
Chennai, Mar 26:
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is on a roll again as they have begun the countdown for the launch
of India’s latest navigation satellite IRNSS-1D onboard PSLV-C-27 on 28 March from Sriharikota that would take
the country closer to setting up its own navigation system on par with the GPS of the US.
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, in its twenty ninth flight (PSLV-C27), will launch IRNSS-1D, the fourth satellite
of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The latest update is that the Mono Methyl Hydrazine
(MMH) propellant filling operation of fourth stage (PS4) of PSLV-C27 has commenced at 9.40 am today.
Target
IRNSS is designed to provide accurate position information services to
users in the country as well as the region extending up to 1,500 km from
its boundary, which is its primary service area.

The satellite contains ultra triple junction solar cells that generate about 1660
watts of electrical power. Sun and Star sensors as well as gyroscopes provide
orientation reference for the satellite. Special thermal control schemes have been
designed and implemented for some of the critical elements such as atomic clocks.
The Attitude and Orbit Control System (AOCS) of IRNSS-1D maintains the satellite’s orientation with the help of reaction wheels, magnetic torquers and thrusters.
Its propulsion system consists of a Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) and thrusters.

died after consuming poison, family
members of Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav’s son today
said they don’t suspect any foul play.
Shailesh was found dead under
mysterious circumstances at his father’s official residence here yesterday.

Elliott’s honeymoon
pledge to sister
WELLINGTON:
New Zealand batting star Grant
Elliott has pledged to pay for his
sister’s honeymoon because he is
skipping her wedding in order to
play in the World Cup final.
Elliott was originally scheduled
to attend sister Kate’s wedding
on Saturday but now has a date
with destiny after propelling New
Zealand into their first ever final
with a six off the penultimate ball
in Tuesday’s semifinal against
South Africa.
Kate Elliott said she realised the
significance of the date when she
booked her wedding venue 12
months ago but felt the chances
were remote of her brother making
the New Zealand team, let alone
playing in the final.
‘(The booking) was on the Saturday before the final of the World
Cup, I had to ask him, ‘What are
the chances?’, she told Fairfax
New Zealand.
‘At that time he wasn’t in the
squad, and he said that he didn’t
Grant Elliott
think he would be called up. I
booked it and he gave me his
blessing.’
She said he was now unable to
make the big day but had prom-
ised her and fiancé Dean Plews a
honeymoon to the destination of
their choice if New Zealand win
the World Cup.
‘We will hold him to that,’ she
said. ‘I told him before he left, ‘go
and win it now, not because of the
honeymoon, but just go smash it’,’
she said.
She told the New Zealand Herald
she was at Eden Park to see her
brother’s man-of-the-match 84
not out and screamed with delight
when he hit the winning runs.
‘It was mixed emotions; he
won’t be able to see us on the
day and we are such a close
family,’ she said ahead of the
wedding, which will take place at
Waiheke Island, off the Auckland
coast.
‘But I saw his face on the big
screen again and he just had the
biggest smile.’
‘From the beginning I said if you
can reach your dream that would
be incredible, I’ll be happy for you.’
Elliott’s New Zealand will meet
the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between Australia and India
in the tournament decider at the
Melbourne Cricket Ground on
Sunday.
Proteas go easy
on cricket team
South Africans have reacted ‘coolly’ to the
team’s loss.
STELLENBOSCH:
Led by unexpected
praise from the nation’s
outspoken Sports Minister, South Africa went
easy on its cricket team
after another painful loss
at the World Cup.
A long history of failure
at the tournament has often put the Proteas at the
sharp end of stinging criticism from the demanding media and fans back
home. But sports minister
Fikile Mbalula said he
was still proud of the
team after its nail-biting
loss to New Zealand in
the semifi nals on Tuesday. Mbalula is famous
for launching a scathing
attack on South Africa’s
soccer team after a loss
in a tournament last year,
calling them ‘a bunch of
losers’ and ‘useless, unbearable individuals.’
He was kinder to the
cricketers.
‘You made us proud as a
nation as you fought until
the last minute,’ Mbalula
said. ‘You are winners in
my eyes and I’m sure the
whole nation agrees.’

praise of
Dhoni
SYDNEY:
Sydney: Australian captain Michael Clarke on
Wednesday lauded the
efforts of his Indian counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni
in turning things around for
his team, as battled in the
high-voltage cricket World
Cup semi-final at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG)
here.
‘They’ve played so much
cricket in Australia. They’ve
worked out how to take
wickets. They’ve worked
out how to score runs,
and they’ve shown that
through this tournament,’
Clarke said at the postmatch press conference.
‘I think MS Dhoni deserves a lot of credit for
the way he’s captained
his team, especially being
defeated in the Test series
and the Tri-Series to be
able to turn things around,’
the right-handed batsman
added.
‘Obviously, they’re at the
top of their game at the moment. So, we’re prepared
for that. We know we’re
playing against a very good
team that obviously won
the last World Cup. We look
forward to that challenge.’
Misbah seeks more
powers for captain
KARACHI:
Pakistan captain Misbahul-Haq has urged the cricket board to give the skipper
and coach the final say in
selection matters.
The 40-year-old batsman
made his one-day international farewell when the
team were knocked out of
the World Cup by Australia
in last week’s quarter-finals
but will continue to lead the
side in Tests.
‘I think the coach and
captain should have the authority to make selections,’
Misbah told reporters in
Lahore on Tuesday.
Under the existing setup the coach and captain
can only give advice to the
selection committee.
‘I am blamed for most
of the problems without
anyone realising that most
of the time I alone am not
responsible for the decisions,’ said Misbah.
‘Some players I have
played with are very biased
in theircomments. Some
former players use harsh
language and this is not
helping Pakistan cricket.’
Misbah said the batsmen
let Pakistan down at the 50over World Cup in Australia
and New Zealand.
‘It was mainly due to our
bowlers that we made the
quarter- finals but we need
to look at and resolve our
batting woes,’ he added.

Aamir Khan
isn’t valuing the virtue of honesty.
‘Today, unfortunately, we are in
a time where dishonesty is looked
upon. How do we bring in a quality
that people can admire?’
He said the industry, which is the
biggest in the world, has the unique
opportunity to ‘transform the way we
think, the way we address issues’.
The 50-year-old actor said the
industry can have an impact on a
generation of people if they made
suitable content for children.
‘This is what I feel whether it is
the television industry, or the film
industry or the media, here is an
opportunity for us, to transform and
contribute to nation building. We can
change a generation of children’,
he said.
