ricket legend Sachin Tendular is an angry man.
He is annoyed at reports that his daughter Sara is
joining films, terming the speculation baseless.
There was a report that Sara was gearing up to enter
Bollywood and will be seen romancing Shahid Kapoor
in a film.
A furious Tendulkar wrote on Twitter: ‘My daughter
Sara is enjoying her academic pursuits. Annoyed at
all the baseless speculation about her joining films.’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated the cooperation of States and the role of the NDRF, media and
other agencies in the wake of the devastating quake in
Nepal that also hit India.
‘To all those saying #ThankYouPM- appreciate the
sentiment...real thanks should be to our great culture,
which teaches us ‘Seva Parmo Dharma’, he tweeted.
‘If we want to thank anyone, it should be the 125 crore
people of India who have made Nepal’s pain their own
& extended all help,’ Modi said.
Meanwhile, the BCCI is unlikely to act on the ICC’s
letter to its President Jagmohan Dalmiya in which it is
alleged that Board Secretary Anurag Thakur was photographed with a suspected bookie during a function

BCCI was sent a letter by the ICC about Thakur being
seen with an alleged bookie Karan Gilhotra but Thakur
has not made any comments on the controversial issue.

q But no fresh hearing needed, verdict can be delivered: 3-Judge bench
NT Bureau/PTI
New Delhi, Apr 27:
In a piquant verdict, the Supreme
Court today held that Tamilnadu
government has no right to appoint
advocate Bhavani Singh as special
public prosecutor (SPP) to appear in
Karnataka High Court for J Jayalalithaa’s disproportionate assets case even
while stating that there was no need
for fresh hearing into the case which
is now at the Karnataka High Court.
A three-judge bench headed by
Justice Dipak Misra said, though the
appointment of the SPP is bad in law,
it does not warrant de novo (fresh)
hearing of appeals of the convicts,
including the AIADMK chief.
The court is also reported have observed that corruption was a serious
issue, and added that the Karnataka
High Court in its verdict had to keep
in mind how corruption issues impact

‘Tamilnadu has no authority to

justices R K Agrawal and Prafulla
C Pant said, adding that it does not
concur with the findings of Justice
Madan B Lokur that fresh hearing on
the appeal be conducted before the
high court.
The bench allowed DMK leader K

written submissions in the High Court
by tomorrow. According to reports
from Bengaluru, Anbazagan’s legal
team has filed its submission later
in the day).
The Supreme Court said that High
Court can go ahead and pronounce
the verdict after considering the
submissions of Anbazhagan and the
State in the matter.
Dealing with the legal provisions
on the appointment of SPP, the
bench said Bhavani Singh’s appointment was only meant for the
trial in lower court.
On 22 April, the apex court had
reserved its judgement on the issue
of legality of appointment of Bhavani

suffer from irregularities but it will not

A young Telugu film actor has
died in the Nepal earthquake.
K. Vijay, 25, was in Nepal along

Music director Kishan said in Hyderabad that he received information Monday that Vijay died when
they were returning from shooting.
The car in which they were travelling overturned. Vijay, a character

others with him were injured.
Vijay hails from Bapatla in Guntur

tourists desperate to go home.
Tens of thousands of people were
forced to spend the night sleeping on
city streets in makeshift plastic tents
barely shielding them from the pouring
rain. ‘Still raining, adds to the misery. Only
consolation is that it may ease the water
crisis in some of the shelters,’ Nepali
Times Editor Kunda Dixit tweeted.
He said Nepal urgently needs tents
and medicines. Earlier, fresh powerful
aftershocks yesterday triggered panic
among the stricken people and caused
avalanches on Mount Everest which
had taken a toll of 22 lives.
A strong 6.7-magnitude aftershock
followed by another measuring 6.5
on the Richter Scale, sent people
scrambling for open spaces.
The 7.9-magnitude quake on Saturday left a trail of devastation and
suffering, with people spending the
cold night in the open because of
fears of fresh quake.
1,053 people are reported killed in
the Kathmandu Valley alone. Officials
fear the death toll could rise as desperate search for survivors continued.
Mass cremations were held here with
the toll rising throughout the day.
International rescue teams, including from India, have arrived here as
Nepal declared a state of emergency

matter was referred to the larger
bench on 15 April when a bench
comprising justices Madan B Lokur

split verdict.
Earlier, Justice Lokur, heading the
two-judge bench, had allowed the
plea of Anbazhagan and ordered a
fresh hearing on the AIADMK chief’s
plea against her conviction, saying
the appeal proceedings, conducted
so far, have been vitiated.
However, Justice R Banumathi had
differed with Justice Lokur and held
that the SPP was duly authorised to

JAYANTHI PAWAR
Chennai, Apr 27:
It may just be another problem
for some, but for a few there
is a lot to ‘hair’ about. More
number of people in the
25-35 years age bracket in
the city are reporting hair
loss and are approaching
doctors, fearing rejection
of marriage proposals.
Nearly 70 per cent
of youngsters in the
age of 25 to 35 years
approach doctors to
undergo hair transplant
due to apprehensions that their
chances of getting married would
recede, said Dr C Bala Subramanian,
a homeopathy consultant at a private
clinic here.
Though the trend of transplant was
low among the people earlier, these
days at least 15 hair transplants are
performed in the clinic, and 70 patients

He also pointed out that there were
other factors that contributed to hair
loss including smoking.

q Seek solution to traffic problems in locality
NT Bureau
Chennai, Apr 27:
That T Nagar is bursting at its seams
and traffic problems are mounting
is no longer news. Residents of the
locality are no pinning hopes on the
Chief Minister to find a solution to
their long-pending problems including
those related to traffic and civic.
T Nagar Exnora Innovators Club
conducted a special meeting recently
at Exnora International headoffice to
discuss traffic congestion near pedestrian crossings and possible problems
due to proposed multi-storied parking
lot near Panagal Park among others.
Also, the meeting discussed removal of roadside eateries in T Nagar,
which are unhygienic and create a
major health hazard. Office-bearers
from several civic Exnora units in T
Nagar participated.
T Nagar Exnora Innovators Club
president R Sridharan welcomed the
gathering and said, ‘problems in T
Nagar are mounting each day and we
need a concerted effort to find a solution to these challenges. We should
be ready to take up these matters
with higher authorities, even the Chief
Minister if necessary.’
T Nagar Exnora Innovators Club highlighted a series of issues affecting the area.
Exnora International joint secretary
R Govindaraj said that although
there are numerous problems in T
Nagar the key issues faced by the
residents presently are absence
of multi-storeyed vehicle parking;
Traffic congestion due to pedestrian
movement and Health hazard due
to roadside eateries. ‘We have been
representing to the concerned authorities to solve these long-pending
issues but no progress is seen. We
should therefore bring this to the notice of the highest authority,’ he said.
The pedestrian flow at Usman Road
near Duraisamy Road junction, Ranganathan Street junction and Madley
Road junction is heavy and there
is a need to construct a pedestrian
subway or a foot-overbridge.
It was unanimously decided at the
meeting to personally submit an appeal to the Chief Minister seeking a
solution to the issues.

which is due to the genes in the body.
The hair from the behind the head is
taken in strips and when taken the

Only one hair can be grafted at

The doctor also had a word of

solutions to the problem and said

Bill in balance
he Government moved the long-pending Constitution (122nd
Amendment) Bill, 2014, for the proposed goods and services
tax in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The leader of the Congress Party
in the House opposed the introduction on the ground that Friday
was reserved for private members’ bills. That shows how serious
our parliamentarians take important legislative business. Given the
serious nature of the Bill and the huge gains that are likely to flow
from it, Parliament ought to be ready to sit even on the weekend to
consider and pass it.
Billed as the biggest tax reform since Independence, the
introduction of GST can change the country’s economic landscape,
making tax collections easier, roping in hitherto untaxed sections,
injecting uniformity and transparency in the taxation system, etc
There are many more gains that are set to flow once the GST replaces
the current multipoint, multiple levies on goods and services. The
Bill has been talked about for more than a decade. It was first mooted
by the Vajpayee Government sometime in 2003. It has gone through
several stages of deliberations within and outside Parliament. In fact,
the UPA Government had introduced its version of the GST Bill in
the previous Lok Sabha which was then referred to a committee. It
lapsed with the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha. Now, Finance
Minister Arun Jaitely is keen to have the Bill made into law as early
as possible. But the Opposition is deadest on obstructing its passage.
On Friday, when Jaitley introduced the Bill Sonia Gandhi led her
party members out of the House to protest its introduction. Her
party’s demand for the Bill to be sent to a committee was rejected
by Jaitley. Because the earlier Bill had already been examined
threadbare by a parliamentary committee, seeking its reference to
a committee was only meant to delay its passage. Jaitley firmly
said that the Bill will not be sent to a committee. The BJP, when in
opposition, had protested against the GST Bill brought forward by
the UPA Government. The Congress in opposition might be paying
it back in its own coin.
Crucially, the formula for sharing the proceeds from the GST too
has been worked out, with the Centre undertaking to protect the
revenue of the States for at least first three years after its introduction.
The proposed GST Council, in which the States will enjoy a twothirds majority, would work out all contentious issues that may arise
in order to ensure that there is equitable distribution of the GST
collections and that the more prosperous States are not penalized
for better performance. These States too have been assured adequate
compensation for their superior performance as against the known
laggards among the States. As Jaitley said while introducing the Bill,
GST would lead to a win-win situation for both the Centre and the
States. Federalism can only emerge as a big winner once the GST
becomes a reality.

ance to the country and distributing it amid the
widespread devastation there.
In the aftermath of the disaster, which has killed
more than 3,200 people, injured about 5,900 and
left many more homeless, development workers
said that continued aftershocks, a crippled transportation network and the loss of power in parts
of the country had made it tough to search for
survivors and distribute much-needed supplies.
Employees of aid groups have been affected
themselves as they organize responses to the
catastrophe. Sanjay Karki, the country director
for Mercy Corps, an international aid organization, said that some members of his staff had
lost their homes.

LONDON:
There is still time to save lives that’s why governments and aid agencies
Sunday rushed doctors, volunteers and equipment to Nepal without waiting
for the dust to settle.
UN spokeswoman Orla Fagan, who is heading to Nepal, said preventing
the spread of disease is one of the most important tasks facing aid workers
who are arriving.
‘There are 14 international medical teams on the way and either 14 or 15
international search-and-rescue teams on the way,’ she said. ‘They need to get
in as soon as possible. They will use military aircraft to get them into Nepal.’
Diarrhea was already a growing problem and a measles outbreak was feared,
with vaccines in short supply, the UN warned in a report.
Substantial logistical hurdles remain, but there were hopeful signs as Kathmandu’s international airport reopened after Saturday’s crushing earthquake,
though there were still delays as aftershocks continued. Some aid vehicles
were able to travel overland from Indian to the stricken Nepalese city of
Pokhara.
‘That means supplies could potentially come in overland from India. That is
a positive sign,’ said Ben Pickering, Save the Children’s humanitarian adviser
in Britain. ‘The airport opening is a small miracle.’

‘Our sense is that the dollar cycle
will get stronger in this quarter as
markets start factoring in the possible
rate hike in Fed.
The reaction might be happening before the Fed rate hike itself’,
Chakraborty said, adding that traditionally the April-June quarter leads
to some weakness in the rupee.
The rupee has been very volatile in
the past few trading sessions, which
is being attributed to a sell-off in
equities
‘We were expecting a move in INR
towards 64.5 by June-end and the recent price trend seems to validate our
view’, StanChart managing director
and head for South Asia Macro Research, Samiran Chakraborty, said.
The rupee has been very volatile
in the past few trading sessions,
which is being attributed to a sell-off
in equities triggered by worries over
the impact of the Minimum Alternate
Tax on FIIs.
The domestic currency shed Rs
1.20 over the last week to end at
63.56 against the greenback, making it the third consecutive week of
a drop.
Chakraborty said a higher-thanexpected March trade deficit with a
very large decline in export growth
has put the spotlight back on overvaluation of the currency.
The merchandise exports declined
21.06 per cent for March, which upset
all calculations for the FY15 target.
This led to calls for supporting exports, which can get uncompetitive if
the currency is stronger.
He said that the ongoing depreciation will only correct the over-valuation and the Reserve Bank will ensure
there is no ‘flare-up in depreciation’
by intervening.
The Reserve Bank has a stated
position of not intervening to protect
the currency at a level, but has gone
public with its view on intervening
both with selling and buying to curb
excessive volatility.
Between April 2014 and February
2015, it bought a net of $49.2 billion
to reduce the volatility on account of
higher inflows, which has taken the
forex kitty to record highs.
The total forex reserves stood at
$343.2 billion for the week ended
18 April.
After depreciating to an all-time low
of 68.85 against the dollar in August
2013 due to the high current account

Brothers no longer top Britain’s rich list
London, Apr 27 (PTI):
NRI industrialists Hinduja brothers
have been displaced as Britain’s
wealthiest family on a rich list released here on Sunday which was
topped by Ukrainian music baron Len
Blavatnik.
Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja
with a fortune of 13 billion pounds
were edged out from the top spot
that they held in 2014 to the second
place this year by Blavatnik, who
has an estimated wealth of 13.17

Times Rich List’. ‘The wedding of a
Hinduja son in Mumbai cost 15 million
pounds. That was small change for
the brothers, who recently purchased
the Royal Bank of Scotland’s jewellery and diamond financing business
in India for an undisclosed sum. It
has a loan book worth nearly 500 million pounds’, the newspaper said in
reference to Britain’s second-richest
billionaires. ‘All the businesses in

In contrast, NRI industrialist Lord

pounds from 2014. According to
this year’s analysis, the total wealth

‘This body will be instructed to report

early actions can be taken. We have
fashioned tax policies for the 21st
century. Our tax administration cannot afford to lag behind. We will not let
it’, Jaitley said.
He said the disputes now attracting
attention are legacy cases, which are
tax demands arising from actions that
the tax authorities and the judiciary
took before NDA government came
to power.
Explaining the levy MAT on foreign
portfolio investors, Jaitley said the
decision was taken not by the government but by quasi-judicial bodies,
which were created well before the
present government came to power
to reassure investors that the tax
system would be free of political in-
terference. Following a ruling by the
AAR, the revenue department has
sent notices to 68 foreign institutional
investors (FIIs) for payment of dues
totalling Rs 602.83 crore towards
Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT).
‘However, we have made clear that
these rulings can be contested in
higher courts, which will respect due
process and have the power to quash
faulty decisions. We also made clear
that our international tax treaties cannot be overridden by these rulings’,
Jaitley said. He said since some of
the rulings of quasi judicial bodies
went in favour of foreign investors,
the tax department had little choice
but to respect these decisions.
‘The rule of law cuts both ways. We
cannot say it is undermined when
we take retroactive actions, and
at the same time seek to override,
retroactively, the decisions of our
institutions’, Jaitley said.
He said the 2015-16 Budget has
done away with taxation which could
be construed as unfriendly to investors.
While general anti-avoidance rules
has not been implemented, minimum
taxes on foreign portfolio investors
have been removed.
And perhaps most significantly,
when the courts decided in favour
of Vodafone and Shell in their longrunning multibillion tax disputes with
the Indian government, we did not
challenge their verdicts, he said.
‘Yet we have not been entirely successful in convincing investors of
the fairness of our tax system. New
cases of unexpected tax demands
have cropped up, the most recent one
being the MAT’, he said.

Volkswagen chairman
steps down
Frankfurt, Apr 27 (PTI):
Ferdinand Piech, chairman of the board of Volkswagen
AG and a major figure in the German auto industry, has
stepped down after clashing with other board members
over his criticism of the company’s CEO.
Volkswagen said in a statement that Piech, 78, was
resigning with immediate effect.
Piech had said in an interview with Der Spiegel published
earlier this month that he was distancing himself from
CEO Martin Winterkorn. He did not publicly give a reason
for his remark. Volkswagen is profitable and saw global
sales pass the 10 million mark last year as it pursues its
goal of dethroning Japan’s Toyota as the world’s largest
automaker.

India out of medal race
after loss to Georgia
Chengdu (China), Apr 27 (PTI):
India’s chances of a medal went
up in smoke as the team crashed to
a heavy loss against Georgia in the
seventh round of the World Women’s
Team Chess Championship here.
In a shocking turn of events, three
favourable positions were spoilt by
the Indians on last three boards as
Georgians coasted to 2.5-1.5 victory.
Reeling on six points after seven
rounds, the Indian women’s team is
out of contention now. Koneru Humpy
and Dronavalli Harika have done their
best for the team but the rest have cut
a sorry figure here.
Coming in to the most decisive
match of the championship, the
Indian eves had to win but the third
and fourth board were again disappointing. On the top board Humpy
drew quite easily as black against
Bela Khotenashvili who is the top
performer in the event thus far.
Harika had to win for the Indians to
have any chance and the Andhra-girl
tried her best only to lose heart and
the game against Lela Javakhishvili
petered out to a draw.
On the third board, Padmini Rout,
currently ranked the third highest
ranked Indian on ELO charts, yet
again fumbled with her openings
and was crushed by Meri Arabidze
of Georgia despite getting a drawing
chance in the game.
miny said at the post-match presentation.
‘We have a few days off and we
need to regroup and pick it up again.’
RCB skipper Virat Kohli was all
praise for the effort put in by his side.
He (Chris Gayle) is pretty cool on
the outside but pretty intense on
the inside. I am more expressive,
so it balances it out and that’s why
we open. ‘I think we have the right
combination now. We wanted to give
Varun (Aaron) a chance. He steamed
in and got wickets. This is the most
balanced combination we are playing. The way Mitch (Starc) picks
up wickets with his inswinging
yorkers, it is moral-boosting. The
last game we had a timely win.

Waqar’s pep talk

Karachi, Apr 27 (PTI):
Fed up with the spate of defeats in
Bangladesh, Pakistan’s head coach
Waqar Younis and his deputy Mushtaq Ahmed have had a heart-to-heart
to talk with the players and asked
them whether they were satisfied with
their coaching methods.
A source close to the Pakistan team
told PTI that after the defeat in the
only T20 international in Bangladesh
last Friday, Waqar and Mushtaq had
held a meeting with the players.
‘The difference about this meeting was that apart from the usual
discussions on what went wrong,
Waqar and Mushtaq asked the players whether they were not happy
Anand takes second
spot after Caruana draw
with their coaching methods and
wanted them to step down,’ the
source disclosed. ‘Waqar was very
emotional and said not only was
the reputation of Pakistan cricket
on line but his own reputation. He
asked candidly whether the players
had something to say to him and
whether he and Mushtaq should
step down,’ the source said. He
said the two former
bowling greats also
waded into the bowlers in
particular demanding to know
why they had not implemented and
executed the plans discussed before
the match in the team meeting.
‘Waqar was unhappy that the bowl-
ers didn’t try any variations in their
bowling despite being told clearly
this was necessary on the pitches
in Bangladesh,’ the source said.
Waqar in particular has come
under immense pressure after
Pakistan lost the one-day
series 0-3 as well as the T20
match and there have been
widespread calls for changes
in the cricket board as well
as the coaching staff. Some
former players have even
taken to social media to claim
that once Prime Minister Nawaz
Sharif returned home from a foreign
tour there would be changes in the
board.
Bayern Munich wins
Bundesliga crown
Berlin, Apr 27:
Holders Bayern Munich claimed
their 25th German league title on
Sunday without kicking a ball -- the
first of what they hope will be three
trophies this season as they chase a
repeat of their 2013 success.
The Bavarians, who are in the
Champions League and German Cup
semi-finals, have an unassailable
15-point lead with four games left
after VfL Wolfsburg lost at Borussia
Moenchengladbach on Sunday to
hand them a third straight league title.
Bayern beat Hertha Berlin 1-0 on
Saturday but had to put the champagne on ice until after second-placed
Wolfsburg’s match. They have 76
points from 30 games ahead of Wolfsburg on 61. Gladbach’s Max Kruse
scored in the 90th minute for a 1-0
victory that ended any mathematical
chance of Wolfsburg catching the
Bavarians. It also put second place
in danger with Gladbach four points
behind on 57 in third. Second-bottom
Paderborn squandered a two-goal
lead to draw 2-2 against Werder
Bremen in the only other game on
Sunday to join Hamburg SV, who are
in the relegation playoff spot after their
3-2 home win over Augsburg on Saturday, on 28 points. The Bundesliga
title is the second for Bayern coach
Pep Guardiola in his second season
at the club, as the Spaniard chases
a repeat of the league, cup and
Champions League treble they won
months before he arrived in 2013. ‘It
is something magnificent to defend
our title and I can only congratulate
our coach and players,’ said Bayern
CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in a
statement. ‘They did it extremely well
in a year after a World Cup where
many of our players were competing.’
Bayern, domestic double winners
last season, face Guardiola’s old
club Barcelona in the Champions
League semi-finals next month and
have also reached the German Cup
last four where they take on Borussia
Dortmund next week.
Bravo keen to get

for his celebratory jigs after taking

has been out of the
Test and ODI sides
for some time is eager
to wear the national

Talking to reporters
after unveiling adidas'
new training gear, Bravo said 'My aim and drive
is to get back in the team. I
will definitely get back and it
is a matter of time and hopefully the
politics get sorted out.'
It may be noted that Bravo fell out
with the West Indies board during
last year's ODI tour to India in which
he was leading the side, after the
team left mid-way due to payment
disputes and was dropped for the
World Cup.
Meanwhile, the West Indies team
hasn't fared well recently and despite the defeat to England in the
second Test on Sunday, Bravo said
he was impressed with the team.
'I was very impressed especially
with the way they fought in the first
Test. It is a young team
missing some
senior players.'
The West Indian all-rounder
had words of
praise for the
new coach Phil
Simmons.
'I have to give credit
to the new coach. He just
took charge and was able to get the
guys together to draw the first match
against England who are among the
top three teams in Tests. But it was
unfortunate they lost the second.
There are some good signs and
things are looking for West Indies

Break-ins, breakdown
IS chief dead?
Rise in crimes in Goa puts visitors in a spot of bother
Conflicting reports on condition of al-Baghdadi
NT Bureau
The recent break-in into a locked house of Saligao in
Goa has given jitters to the locals and tourists as such
incidents are on the rise in the tourist paradise.
The coastal belt of Goa has become more prone to
burglaries, especially houses which remain closed
for months together. The recent incidents of crimes
would make thousands of tourists who throng the
sun-drenched beaches think twice before embarking
on a holiday from now on.
Why & what?
Unemployment is the prime reason for the escalating crime ratio’s
in the Union Territory. Migrants who find it difficult to find employement concentrate on the locked houses, which are around 8000 in Goa.
Where are the
owners?
The aesthitics of the State captivated a
lot of tourists, but the ground reality is
that many of the Goans migrate to other
places in search of better employment
opportunities.
Irresistibility of Goa’s charm hinder the
natives from selling their houses. Census data
show that Goa’s houses grew three times in relation to its decadal population growth which was at
8.2 per cent.
Going by
numbers
Goa has the highest
proportion of locked houses
in the country - as much as
1.4 per cent. Lakshadweep
and Meghalaya occupy the
second spot with 1.1 per
cent of their houses
locked.
Bigger States such
as Uttar Pradesh,
Bihar and Rajasthan,
which routinely
witness migration by
individuals and families
to big cities in search of
work, have significantly lower
proportions of locked houses.
Going forward
North Goa District Magistrate has ordered that all the owners of residential accommodation, commercial
houses, hotels and paying guests should verify the bonafides of persons through their proof of valid
identity cards, and fill-in the tenant’s verification forms. These should then be sent to police stations
concerned for verification.

Tehran, Apr 27:
In what could deal a severe jolt to
the extremist organisation Islamic
State, ‘Radio Iran’ has claimed that
ISIS caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
has died.
According to a tweet by the All
India Radio (AIR), Baghdadi’s
death claim has been made by
Radio Iran.
It can be noted that a
Guardian report last week claimed
that Baghdadi had received serious ‘life-threatening’ injuries during a US-led airstrike in March
and that the strike had left him
seriously wounded.
The report added that Baghdadi
was no more in control of daily
operations of ISIS as he had not
been able to recover.
However, there were similar reports of Baghdadi being ‘seriously
injured’ in US-led air strikes last
year, but they were not confirmed.
The Pentagon had refuted the
latest report of Baghdadi being
injured, saying there was no evidence to prove that the ISIS chief
had suffered injuries when the USled coalition planes bombarded the
al-Baaj a district of Nineveh, near
Syrian border on 18 March.

Bill to clip
powers of
Lanka Prez
Colombo, Apr 27:
Sri Lankan President Maithripala
Sirisena today presented a bill in
parliament for a key amendment to
the Constitution that seeks to dilute
powers of the President.
The 19A amendment was introduced after last week’s aborted
attempt caused due to disruption
by supporters of former president
Mahinda Rajapaksa.
‘It has always been my desire to
prune Presidential powers. You all
will agree that I have been very generous,’ Sirisena told the House.
Sirisena’s opposition coalition had
pledged to do away with Presidential
authority to make parliament more
powerful, as their main plank in the 8
January presidential election which
resulted in a stunning defeat for
Rajapaksa. Sirisena described the
amendment as a historic occasion
where all Legislators are presented
with the first such opportunity in 37
years.
Sri Lanka switched to an executive president-headed government
in 1978 from a Westminster-style
system. The 19A ran into a snag as
some of its key provisions transferring
powers of the president to parliament
were subject to a national referendum
by the Supreme Court.

Public vandalise MTC bus at Selaiyur
NT Bureau
Chennai, Apr 27:
An MTC bus was vandalised at Sithalapakkam in Selaiyur this morning.
According to police sources, a
woman identified as Umapathy who
was riding on a two-wheeler tried to
overtake an MTC bus (B51 which
shuttles from Saidapet to Karanai)
and was subsequently hit.
Umapathy who did not suffer any
injuries picked up an argument with
the bus driver, Premkumar.
Police said, the fight escalated
and Premkumar reportedly slapped
Umapathy.
Following which, onlookers damaged the bus and beat up Premkumar
and the bus conductor.
After the police arrived, the injured
were rushed to Chrompet Government Hospital.
The Pallikaranai police has registered a case and is inquiring.

The ISIS overran a huge swathe
of Iraq and Syria in June last year
and established the so-called
‘Islamic State’ across occupied
areas and anointed Abu Bakr
al-Baghdadi as its caliph. Declaring the Caliphate, Baghdadi who
rarely makes public appearances,
appeared at a mosque in July,
demanding all Muslims to pledge
allegiance to him.
The US has imposed a bounty
worth $10 million on the al-Baghdadi’s head.
Despite a spate of coalition
strikes on ISIS in Iraq and Syria
since August last year, the extremists continue to advance and
unleash bloodshed and terror.
Similar reports of Baghdadi being
‘seriously injured’ in US-led air
strikes came up in November last
year as well.
But later such reports were debunked after Baghdadi made his
appearance.
Senior Iraqi officials then said
that the ISIS leader could have
been wounded, but his right-hand
aide Auf Abdulrahman Elefery had
perished during the air strike. Taking to the social media, the ISIS
militants said that their leader was
not travelling in the same convoy
as that of Elefery. Feared IS chief
Baghdadi carries a USD 10 million
bounty on his head.
The ISIS recently carried out
mass execution in Iraq’s Anbar
province, executing over 300
people of a tribe that had joined
the fight against the Islamic State.
Capgemini snaps
up IGate
Bengaluru, Apr 27:
French IT giant Capgemini is acquiring Nasdaq-listed IGate for $4.04
billion -- in one of the biggest M&As
in the IT services space to take on
rivals like IBM and Accenture.
The French IT major bought Igate
for $48 a share and the combined
entity would have 12.5 billion euro
in revenues.
HP’s $13.9 billion acquisition of
EDS in 2008 is one of the biggest IT
services deal so far. More recently,
Canada’s CGI acquired UK’s Logica
for $2.6 billion.
IGate has revenues over $1.2 billion, an operating margin of 19 per
cent and a global employee base of
33,000. The deal is expected to be
immediately accretive to Capgemini’s operating margin and earnings
per share. ‘The combined group
strengthens Capgemini’s position as
a leading company in IT services,
outsourcing and consulting, with an
estimated combined revenue of 12.5
euro billion, combined operating
margin above 10per cent and around
190,000 people serving clients worldwide.
Capgemini chairman and CEO, Paul
Hermelin welcoming ‘new talents and
leaders to our Group, who share our
convictions and professional culture.’
This acquisition is in line with the
Capgemini group’s strategy. North
America, the largest and most innovative market for IT services, would be
by far the first market of the group,
with approximately 30 per cent of
the combined group revenue for
2015. With Igate, Capgemini would
quicken its pace to respond to key,
fast-growing and innovative markets.

CSK vs KKR at Chennai, 8 pm (IST)
Keshri is KKR’s 16th man
KOLKATA:
In a noble gesture, Kolkata Knight
Riders (KKR) included deceased
cricketer Ankit Keshri as the 16th
member of their side in an IPL T20
cricket match against Rajasthan
Royals at Eden Gardens, here. The
home side handed over a cheque
for Rs 10 lakh to the Ankit’s family.
‘We’re too happy to do so and it’s
an opportunity for KKR in a small
way to remember Ankit and the premature end he faced,’ CEO and MD of
Kolkata Knight Riders Sports Private Ltd
said in a letter to the Cricket Association
of Bengal. The CAB also displayed a
portrait of Ankit with a caption -- ‘Ankit
Forever’ -- all over the stadium.
Earlier former India captain
Sourav Ganguly had decided to
give away his BCCI pension for
this year to the deceased former
Under-19 Bengal captain’s family.
In another tragic on-field incident
after Phillip Hughes’ death last November, the East Bengal cricketer
passed away three days after sustaining a head injury during a CAB senior
one-day knock-out match against
Bhowanipore SC on 17 April.
Ankit was in hospital for three days
and was showing signs of recovery
but died on 20 April early morning

DELHI:
Playing at the Ferozeshah Kotla, this time as part of the
visiting team, Varun Aaron dealt two telling blows to push
the Delhi Daredevils on the back-foot. The Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer claimed Yuvraj Singh and Angelo
Mathews off successive deliveries to leave the hosts reeling on 39 for four and tip the scales in his team’s favour.
Making good use of the bounce and conditions at the Kotla,
the pacer helped set-up RCB’s second successive victory.
Speaking to ipt20.com after the comprehensive win, Aaron
said working with Dennis Lillee, and inputs from Allan Donald
and Bharat Arun had helped him sharpen his craft.

Q: You took
the two wickets that
broke DD’s back. What were
your plans when you were running to bowl to Yuvraj Singh
and Angelo Mathews, two very
dangerous batsmen?
A: There was obviously planning around
Angelo (Mathews) and Yuvi bhai (Yuvraj Singh).
In T20 you always plan, but rarely
things go according to plan. It just
came off really well today for all of us.
qqq
Q: Could you elaborate on the plan you had?
A: We just wanted to bowl hard lengths
in the beginning and luckily the
wicket was doing a little bit and
that just worked for us.
Q: What was it that
Dennis Lillee and you worked
on that has made a difference?
A: It’s not just Dennis Lillee, obviously
that (stint) helped me a lot. But even before
coming into this match I spent some good time
with AD (Allan Donald) and Bharat Arun at the
nets and that also really helped me. The areas that
he helped me on were just basic stuff; he helped me
with the technique and that just helped me be more
accurate. We worked on my bowling action.
Q: How has it been playing with Mitchell
Starc?
A: Mitch (Starc) is great. Having Mitch in the
team is an asset for any team. He is a great
bowler and a good team man as well. He
gets that wicket upfront which makes it
easier because the opposition goes on
the back-foot right there. It is good
fun playing with Mitch.
Q: There was bounce in
the wicket. Did that help you?
A: Yes! Bounce in the wicket always helps,
especially when it goes through well with good
bounce. This wicket was really pleasing to bowl on
after bowling in Bangalore for the past two matches.
qqq
Q: Are you disappointed on missing out on
a hat-trick?
A: Yes it is (disappointing). But it’s never really under your control, especially with the white ball
which doesn’t do much. Maybe if you are
bowling with a red ball you have a
better chance, but well, it
is luck.
Q: Those
two wickets came after changing ends. Did the
change of ends help in any way?
A: No, not at all. I felt that I had
bowled the first two overs well too. It is just
three edges (resulted in) three boundaries;
that happens in T20. I just backed myself to
come back and bowl two good overs after that.
qqq
Q: How have you worked on bringing more
discipline in your bowling?
A: I went to Australia and I had a stint with Dennis
Lillee for a week (and) that really helped me a lot.
I was disappointed not make it to the World Cup
and I had time in my hands. So before the Irani
Trophy, I had gone over there (to Australia) and
then I immediately picked up six wickets (on
return). I felt I was bowling well in the first

TOMORROW’S MATCH
Ankit Keshri
New Delhi, Apr 27 (PTI):
The costliest buy this season, Yuvraj Singh has not set the IPL
ablaze the way he was expected to but his Delhi Daredevils captain
J P Duminy has backed the star player to come good in the later
stages of the T20 league.
Yuvraj, bought for Rs 16 crore, has scored 124 runs in seven
innings at an average of 17.71 with just one half century to his
name. The costliest player in the IPL managed 2 runs off 5 balls
in Delhi’s demoralising 10-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers
Bangalore here last night.
Duminy feels it is not fair to single out a player in the team’s inconsistent run, which has seen them lose four out of their seven games.
‘It is easy to criticise him. He has not had great opportunities in
the matches we have done well and I think he will be the first to
admit that he would have loved to contribute but it is not because
of one guy’s performance that we are losing.
‘He is a massive player for us and I have all the confidence that
he is going to come good for us in the later parts of the tournament,’
said the South African, who has been in decent touch, scoring 222
runs at 44. While Yuvraj is yet to fire, another senior player Zaheer
Khan is yet to take the field for Daredevils amid rising speculation
over the fast bowler’s fitness. Duminy said he would be available
for the 1 May game against Kings XI Punjab.
‘I think he (Zaheer) is about 95 per cent fit to be honest. My thinking
is, he will be up for selection for the game on the first. His progress
has been good, he has been very determined to comeback and
represent Delhi,’ said Duminy.
He also said it wouldn’t be right to make drastic changes despite
a heavy defeat they suffered. ‘We have been inconsistent in both
batting and bowling department and as I said earlier, we need
to take a lot of lessons out of today’s game, take a hard look at
ourselves. It is not about pointing fingers. Each of us could have
done 10 per cent better. Plus, we should not take the credit away
from RCB, the way they came out and bowled.
