that the provisions of the Right to

by the Ministry of Human Resources
and the expenditure incurred by the
schools in the State, amounting to Rs
97.04 crore towards admissions, are

In a letter to Modi, a copy of which

Panneerselvam said, ‘Based on
these unilateral and arbitrary amendments to the SSA Framework, the
claim of Rs 25.13 crore submitted by
Tamilnadu government for the year

The claim submitted for the year

amount of Rs 14 lakh. This restriction
of the claim to Rs 14 lakh is because
the new framework makes expenditure incurred on children enrolled

Judgment day for
Salman tomorrow
Mumbai, May 5 (PTI):
A Mumbai sessions court will pronounce its verdict tomorrow in the
hit-and-run case against Bollywood
superstar Salman Khan who, if convicted, could face upto 10 years in jail.
The judgement in the over 12-year-old
case, whose trial saw many twists and
turns, can make or mar the career of the
actor on whom ride investments of over
Rs 200 crore. A tight security blanket
will be thrown around the court when
sessions judge D W Deshpande pronounces the judgement tomorrow. Only
the lawyers, media and the court staff
will be allowed to be present.
While fixing 6 May for delivering
the verdict last month, Deshpande
had directed the 49-year-old actor to
be present at 11.15 am. The popular
actor was tried afresh under the
harsher charge of culpable homicide
not amounting to murder which is
punishable with imprisonment upto
10 years. A Bandra Metropolitan
Magistrate, who conducted the
trial under lesser charge of rash
and negligent driving, which carries a maximum punishment of two
years, had in 2012 slapped the
more serious offence of culpable
homicide and committed the matter to the sessions court.

Not on the right track
q Transportation forums raise concern over slew of mishaps
C SHYAM SUNDAR
Chennai, May 5:
The Chennai Beach-TambaramChengalpet section is not only a
busy one for the Southern Railway
but infamous for the number of
mishaps reported each day on the
tracks at various places and near
level-crossings.
Given the situation, Southern Railway officials, Railway Police Force
personnel, motormen, commuters
and representatives from traffic and
transportation forums met in the
city recently to discuss the issue
of commuters illegally crossing the
tracks at different spots between
Chennai Beach and Tambaram
Railway Stations.
According to Anupam Sharma,
Divisional Railway Manager, Southern Railway, Chennai, ‘The main
reasons for train-related deaths include disregard for the level crossing signals, use of mobile phones
while walking over the tracks and
avoiding foot-over-bridges.’
Every day, on an average, three
to four persons are hit by trains
while walking over the tracks. Also,
livestock and pet animals were hit
by the moving trains, he pointed out.
Commuters and representatives
of traffic and transportation forums
said strict action should be taken
against those who cross the tracks
in a manner that invites danger.
‘People who trespass should be
booked and asked to pay the fine.
Use of mobile phones
while walking over the
tracks and avoiding
foot-over-bridges are
reasons for mishaps
in the Chennai BeachTambaram section Railway authorities
Jaywalking along Railway tracks is said to be the main reason for
rise in mishaps.
The offenders should not be allowed
to go scot-free. The majority of
victims in such train accidents are
youngsters. Awareness should be
created among college students and
youth about the dangers of crossing the tracks,’ said V Santhanam,
founder, Chromepet Rail Users
Forum.
‘In order to prevent people from
crossing tracks in an illegal manner, the Southern Railway has built
subways, foot-over-bridges and compound walls. The compound walls
are broken by anti-social elements,’
officials pointed out.
Moreover, the commuters requested the officials to provide escalators,
construct ramps (for the benefit of
senior citizens and physically-challenged persons) and provide proper
illumination on the borders
of Railway stations and on station
roads.
Some motormen said that while
crossing tracks people tend to underestimate the speed of the train, which
resulted in fatalities.
Meanwhile, commuters in Perungalathur have sought a footoverbridge at Perungalathur Railway
station at the earliest as a large
number of people take risks, walking
over the tracks.
It may be noted that pedestrians
and motorists don’t pay heed to the
two-level crossings to go towards the
interior parts of Perungalathur and to
reach Grand Southern Trunk Road
and duck underneath and move on,
risking their lives and exposing their
vehicles to damage.
‘We have told the motorists, commuters and pedestrians to be patient,
but they don’t seem to care,’ a Railway staff said.
This impatience seems to be the
cause for several mishaps near
level-crossings and representatives of traffi c and transportation
forums felt the authorities need to
initiate efforts to construct bridges
or subways at important stations to
replace level-crossings.

Odisha woman’s shoulder woes end in Chennai
q City doc performs rare surgery to provide solution to chronic problem
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 5:
A 71-year old woman from Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, is happy. It is
because she would be free from
shoulder pain thanks to the surgery
performed by Dr A K Venkatachalam,
consultant orthopedic surgeon at
Meenakshi Multi-Speciality Hospital
at Mylapore here..
The woman - Mrs P Nair was suffering from left shoulder pain for the
last 15 years. This was part of her
widespread rheumatoid arthritis.
She didn’t get any relief from ayurvedic treatment. CT and MRI scans
showed advanced bone and soft
tissue destruction from rheumatoid
arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis affects all the
synovial joints. It ultimately leads
to joint damage and bony destruc-
tion. While pain killers and disease
modifying drugs may be useful in
the early stages, joint replacements
are the only way to cure the affected
joints. Multiple joint replacements are
required to keep the patient mobile.
As the bony destruction was advanced, Dr Venkatachalam, based
on the scan reports decided that a
reverse shoulder replacement was
the only option. He performed the
rare operation on Mrs Nair to restore
mobility. The operation took nearly
two and half hours, a release said.
Earlier in 2008, he had performed
bilateral knee replacements to help
her to walk.
In a reverse shoulder replacement,
the surgeon is faced with extensive
damage to the rotator cuff, joint
and bones. The rationale is that
instead of relying on the rotator
Why and what?
CT and MRI scans showed Mrs Nair was suffering from rheumatoid
arthritis which ultimately leads to joint damage and bony destruction.
While pain killers and disease modifying drugs may be useful in the
early stages, joint replacements are the only way to cure the affected
joints. Hence based on the scan reports, Dr Venkatachalam decided
to pefrom a reverse shoulder replacement.

cuff tendons to initiate movement,
the surgeon relies on the Deltoid
muscle to initiate lifting of the arm.
The normal position of the ball in a
shoulder joint is at the upper end
of the arm bone while the socket
is at the outer end of the shoulder
blade. In this operation, the position of the two is reversed with the
ball being shifted to the shoulder
blade and the socket to the upper
end of the arm bone. The center
of rotation is shifted more outward
and this makes the Deltoid muscle
more effective.
The back side of the un-cemented
ball is coated with a ceramic material to allow osseo-integration by the
patient’s own bone. The ball will biologically integrate with her shoulder
blade. The socket is cemented into
the arm bone.
The patient has recovered well.
She will be totally pain free and recover full mobility after a course of
physical therapy. A reverse shoulder replacement calls for advanced
skills and training in shoulder joint
replacements says Venkatachalam
in the release.

T
o a question whether marital rape is likely to be criminalised
in India, the Minister of State for Home, Haribhai Parthibhai
Chaudhar, has said that the concept of marital rape, as understood internationally, cannot be suitably applied in the Indian context
due to various factors. These factors were the level of education, illiteracy, poverty, myriad social customs and values, religious beliefs and
the mindset of society to view marriage as a sacrament. According to
a study, about 75 per cent of married women in India are subjected to
marital rape, reinforcing the fact that we might be into the 21st century
but archaic feudal attitudes deny women their basic rights.
When sex is obtained by force, a threat of force, or physical violence,
it is a violation of marriage as an intimate bond in which both husband
and wife are equal partners. Indian laws on marital rape as mentioned in
Sections 375 and 376 of the IPC have to be amended to give the woman
the right over her body. A man can be punished for rape with imprisonment and fine “unless the woman raped is his own wife”. Similarly,
the Indian Evidence Act prevents evidence of marital rape from being
admissible in court. How can the sexual trauma and emotional pain in
such an intimate relationship be ignored?
Unless the suggestion of the 172nd Law Commission is accepted,
proving marital rape in court, combining the provisions of the Domestic
Violence Act and the IPC, is virtually impossible. Surely, a married
woman cannot lose her individuality and the right to honour and dignity.
Are these not fundamental human rights, irrespective of marital status,
education or economic background? It’s high time we stopped using the
shield of social customs and religious beliefs to endorse retrogressive
interpretations of law. Ironically, within her marriage a woman can
protect her right to life and liberty, but not her body.
Rape in any form destroys a woman’s psyche because of the outdated
concept of penile/vaginal penetration. Law-makers in India assert
marital rape is not a crime which is why the 172nd Law Commission
of India has not recommended it be made a criminal offence while the
J.S Verma committee has recommended the opposite.
And so 75 % of women have to accept rape within marriage or opt for
divorce as a solution. Most ‘put up with it’ for the sake of family honour.
The Justice JS Verma Committee has rightly recommended that marital
rape should be made a criminal offence so that India stands alongside
the developed nations in upholding women’s rights, not merely mouthing empty platitudes.

q Taliban stresses preconditions for any talks with Afghan govt
DOHA:
Taliban militants meeting Afghan
officials in Qatar reiterated their hardline stance on peace talks, ruling out
negotiations until US forces leave the
country and the insurgents are allowed
to open a political office.
A 20-member Afghan delegation
over the weekend launched two days
of ‘open discussion’ with Taliban representatives in the Gulf emirate in their
latest attempt to end Afghanistan’s long
war. The militants emphasised their
preconditions for negotiations in a statement read out by their representatives at
the meeting and posted on the Taliban’s
official website.
‘One of the main external obstacle
(to talks) is the occupation of our
country by Americans... continuing the
occupation will mean continuing the
war,’ the statement said. ‘The mother
of all these miseries is their invasion,
which should end as a first step toward

at selling half a million smartbands
and smartwatches in India within a
couple of years.
‘Timex is known globally for watches that are heavy on technology and
good for the outdoors. But in India
we have been selling gold watches
for two decades. We want to shake
off that legacy,’ says Mathur, adding that the mantra now is smart,
not gold.

The statement came as a Taliban

bus in Kabul today, killing one civilian and wounding 15 others in the
latest attack in the annual ‘spring
offensive’.
The insurgents also said they needed to set up a political office for any
peace negotiations and demanded
that their leaders be removed from a
US ‘blacklist’.

is needed. The Islamic Emirate does
not have an address for peace talks,’
the Taliban said, using their official

Prince William with his wife
Kate and new born baby Charlotte
LONDON:
Britain’s newborn princess has been
named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana,
royal officials said Monday. The
princess is the second child of Prince
William and his wife Kate, the Duchess
of Cambridge. The baby will be known
as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
Charlotte, the feminine form of
Charles, is a nod to the newborn’s
grandfather, Prince Charles. The middle names honor Queen Elizabeth II,
the infant’s great-grandmother, and the
late Princess Diana, William’s mother.
The princess is fourth in line to the
throne after Charles, William and her
older brother Prince George.
William and Kate introduced the
baby princess to the world on Sat-
urday evening, just 12 hours after
Kate checked into a London hospital
to give birth. The baby weighed in at
8 pounds, 3 ounces (3.7 kilograms).
Bookmakers had taken huge
amounts of bets on the name, with
Alice, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Victoria,
Olivia and Diana among the most
popular guesses.
Earlier on Monday, bells at Westminster Abbey pealed and gun salutes
were fired across London in honor
of the newborn princess. Dozens of
deafening volleys were fired from
Hyde Park and the Tower of London.
William and Kate’s new daughter is
the first British princess who won’t face
royal discrimination because she’s a
girl, but that doesn’t mean her life will
be a fairy tale.
Is Kerry adding insult to injury?
WASHINGTON:
Kerry was trying to convince the
Israeli public with the energy of the
innocent that they had nothing to
worry about. The world would finally
be a safer place, and the nuclear deal
with the world’s number one sponsor
of terrorism would protect Israel, the
US Secretary of State claimed.
Apparently, Kerry, with his selfproclaimed 100 per cent voting record
on Israel in the US Senate, does not
understand a thing about the people
of Israel; otherwise, he would not
have insulted them by suggesting that
Israel’s criticism of the Framework
Agreement between Iran and the six
world powers was hysterical.
The Israeli people knew long before the Lausanne agreement that
Obama would sign a bad deal with
Iran because they know that Kerry
and Obama do not understand the
Middle East.
For the Israelis, it is absolutely clear
that closing a nuclear deal with Iran is
equivalent to making a pact with the

devil similar to Chamberlain’s ‘Peace
in our time’ agreement with Hitler.
After all, they have learned to take
genocidal threats seriously; and they
have heard Iranian leaders say that
the annihilation of the Jewish state is
‘non-negotiable’.
So if you want to understand the
mood in Israel after Lausanne, it’s like
the second part of Jackson Brown’s
song ‘Before the Deluge’.
Yes, there is anger and frustration
in Israel about the deal with Iran; but
that doesn’t make Israel’s criticism of
the Iran deal hysterical.
Firstly, if the Israeli opposition to the
Framework Agreement is ‘hysterical’
as Kerry claims, how can it be that
many rational nuclear experts and experienced politicians outside of Israel
share their concerns in every aspect?
Could it be that it is Kerry who is becoming increasingly hysterical in the
way he reacts to critics, apparently
because he doesn’t have answers
to the questions about the many
loopholes in the agreement? After
all, Kerry has repeatedly shown that
he is not able to act rationally when
he is about to lose a political battle.
Only last year, he warned Israel that
it would become an apartheid state
and that the Palestinians would start
a new Intifada if the US-sponsored
negotiations with the Palestinians
should fail.

Woman who hit

CARACAS:
A woman who bashed Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro on the
head with a mango has been promised a new house for her troubles in
a surreal tropical tale that has gone
viral in Venezuela.
The 52-year-old president was driving a bus through a crowd last weekend in the central state of Aragua
when someone in the crowd tossed
the fruit at him. ‘It says: ‘If you can,
call me’,’ the former bus driver said
later during the week, as he displayed
the fruit with a name and phone number scrawled on it on television.
‘Marleny Olivo had a problem with her
house. (Officials) called her. She was
scared. She couldn’t believe it was true.
... I’ve approved an apartment for you,
Marleny, as part of the ‘Grand Venezuelan Housing Mission’,’ he added,
vowing to eat the mango. Venezuela’s
ever ebullient cybersphere did not miss
a beat, with the president’s populist
gesture drawing admiration and derision, plus plenty of jokes.
‘If for a mango they give you apartments, then you know what to do: throw

Sir,
This week anxious students and

inability to open up their bottled-up feelings to the right person, who can give

Parents should identify the natural

Biz confidence
for April-June
declines
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 5:
The level of optimism about business environment among chief financial officers in the country declined
in April-June period largely owing to
slower pace of reforms than initially
expected and weak profit level of the
corporates, says a report.
According to a survey by analytics
firm Dun & Bradstreet, the CFO Optimism Index has registered a decline
for the third consecutive quarter, but
remained high on yearly basis.
The Composite CFO Optimism
Index for April-June period of 2015
declined by around 4.9 per cent on
quarter-on-quarter basis but rose by
about 24.5 per cent on year-on-year
basis.
‘The optimism level among the
CFOs has failed to revive for the
third consecutive quarter as optimism
pertaining to the domestic macroeconomic scenario remains dented’, Dun
& Bradstreet India director - Risk
Management Solution Arvind Raghav
said. Majority of CFOs expect level
of financial risks on the company’s
balance sheet and risk appetite to
remain unchanged during April-June
quarter of 2015.

Keeping a secret is akin to carrying
a physical weight and it can diminish motivation, making people less
productive at work, a new study has
found.
‘The more you feel preoccupied
by a secret and are thinking about
it, the more you are using your
personal resources - cognitive and
motivational - the
less energy you
feel you have available to pursue other tasks’, said
Michael Slepian, lead author of the
study and a researcher at Columbia
Business School.
‘You see things around you as
more challenging. It’s the same
outcome as when you are carrying
a heavy burden’, he said.
In our personal lives, this dynamic
can lead us to withdraw from people,
activities, and relationships. In the
workplace, it can result in decreased
productivity and engagement.
‘Being preoccupied by a secret at
work can be demotivating. And we
know if you are less motivated, you
perform less well’, Slepian said.

Gold imports surged 19.5 per cent
to reach $34.32 billion in 2014-15
due to declining prices and easing
of restrictions by the Reserve Bank.
Imports of the metal were $28.7 billion
the previous fiscal, 2013-14.
Increase in gold imports impacts
the country’s trade deficit, which has
reached $137 billion in 2014-15, and
the current account deficit (CAD).
The imports almost doubled in
March to $4.98 billion which pushed
the trade deficit to a four-month high
of $11.79 billion for the month, according to the Commerce Ministry
data.
India is the largest importer of gold,
which mainly caters to the demand of
the jewellery industry.
The Reserve Bank and the government have maintained that the CAD
level is comfortable, but the spike in
gold imports may spark fresh worries.
It has narrowed to 1.7 per cent for
the first nine months of the previous
fiscal. According to the Reserve Bank
data, in the April-December period of
last fiscal, CAD stood at $31.1 billion
or 2.3 per cent of GDP.

Masicampo of Wake Forest University, asked participants to think of
either a ‘preoccupying’ secret or a

then to judge the steepness of a

Individuals’ perception of
‘hill slant’, as this

has been shown
to vary depending
on whether subjects
are carrying additional weight.
The results were consistent: those
participants who were asked to recall a preoccupying secret judged
the hill to be steeper, and therefore
more forbidding, just as if they were
lugging a heavy load.
For workers pinned down under
the weight of their secrets, the best
solution is simply to get them off
their chests, Slepian said.
‘Sometimes people feel like the
right thing to do is to keep the
secret. But by doing that, you may
set yourself up for negative consequences’, he said.

Yusuf’s cameo was
crucial: Pandey
Warner’s early dismissal did the trick, says Umesh Yadav
Umesh Yadav struck quick blows to derail SRH’s chase against
KKR yesterday.
Kolkata, May 5 (PTI):
Kolkata Knight Riders batsman
Manish Pandey credited all-rounder
Yusuf Pathan’s quick-fire cameo
for the comprehensive 35-win over
Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL T20
cricket tournament here.
Put in to bat, KKR stuttered after a
flying start but Pathan’s 30 not out
from 19 balls pushed their total of 167
for 7 before Sunrisers Hyderabad fell
short by 35 runs.
‘I was batting well, if I got through,
probably more runs could have come.
In the end, Yusuf’s knock of 30 not
out from 19 balls was a crucial one.
It was a very good score on this
wicket,’ Pandey told a post-match
news conference.
He also hailed the effort of their
spin duo of Brad Hogg and Johan
Botha for doing a fine job in absence
of the spin spearhead Sunil Narine,
who is yet to get a clearance for his
suspected bowling action.
‘We’re missing Sunil obviously.
He’s been a great part of KKR team
but I think Johan Botha and Brad
Hogg are making a lot of difference
to the side. They bowled in a crucial
time of the game. Hogg has been
phenomenal for us.
He’ll go
a long way.’
KKR are eyeing six points
from their next two
concluding league
games at home
against Delhi Daredevils (on 7 May)
and against
Kings XI Punjab (10 May) to virtually
seal a last-four spot.
‘We have the the home advantage.
We had a really good outing today.
Both batsmen and bowlers did everything as was targetted. We have to
win all the upcoming games,’ he said.

‘Bravo’s run-out of Kohli turned game in our favour’
Suresh Raina
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 5:
Praising Chennai Super Kings’
team effort in the crucial win against
Royal Challengers Bangalore here on
Monday, top-order batsman Suresh
Raina credited skipper Mahendra
Singh Dhoni’s leadership qualities
for the side’s excellent showing in
the IPL.
Man-of-the-match Raina top-scored
with 52 as CSK posted 148 for nine
in 20 overs and the bowlers combined well to defend the total. The
left-handed batsman was pleased
with the table-topper’s successfully
defending a modest score thrice in
the competition so far - 150 vs Delhi
Daredevils and 134 vs Kolkata Knight
Riders.
‘It is overall a team effort whenever
you are defending 140 plus. I have
been with CSK for eight years. It is
about how you remain positive. That
is one aspect. I must say that Dhoni
led the team very well during the last
four games. You must remember that
we defended 130-140 earlier on,’
Raina said at the post-match press
conference.

Aaron Ramsey
doubled the advantage four minutes later when
his shot was diverted into the net
via a Hull defender.
Sanchez rounded Harper to add
his second in first half stoppage

after the break, Hull’s solitary
response came from Stephen
Quinn’s 56th minute header.
Arsenal, in third, have 70 points
from 34 matches and trail secondplaced Manchester City, who have
played a game more, on goal difference.
Hull sit one point and place
above the relegation zone and
face the daunting prospect of
games against Tottenham Hotspur
and Manchester United among
their remaining three fixtures.
‘The most important thing was the
victory today because the team is
in a very good
moment,’ Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla, who dictated proceedings
throughout, told Sky Sports.

We want to get second place this

BCCI to probe Srini’s actions
during presidency
New Delhi, May 5 (PTI):
Promising to clean up cricket,
BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur
hinted at initiating a probe against
N Srinivasan in order to pave the
way for his ouster from the ICC
chairman’s post.
The internal feud within the
BCCI took an ugly turn last week
with Thakur launching a stinging
attack on Srinivasan, saying that
he should actually share information on bookies with his own family members ‘whose involvement
in betting has been proved.’
Thakur believes that it is Srinivasan’s actions, during his presidential term, that need to be
probed. ‘The SGM is an option
and BCCI will probe all details.
But we don’t want to do any
witch hunting. If there is proof
against anyone action will be
taken. Srinivasan is BCCI’s nominee in ICC till September and
based on the proof, we will take
the decision on him continuing or
not then,’ Thakur told television
channels.
against Virat Kohli (48) helped CSK
bundle out RCB for 124 in 19.4 overs.
Dwayne Bravo reacted well to run
Kohli out off his own bowling and
Raina admitted that it was the turning point in the unsuccessful chase.
‘The run out had set the tone first.
We all know Virat is a very good
player whenever he has to chase.
I would say that run out was very
crucial because they were 35 for 2
and suddenly he got out and they
were 35 for three and this changed
the momentum for us. Yes, they had
a very good
partnership going, especially Virat.
He has won lot of matches for us
(India) and when he got out that
changed the game for us,’ said Raina.
Praising the team’s fielding, he said,
‘It all started from the fielding effort.
Whenever a side is fielding well, it is
confusing to the batsmen and you
tend to give dot balls. Therefore,
when your side comes up with good
fielding, that gives the team a lot of
good games.’
The two-time champions have once
again occupied the top spot in the
table with 7 wins from 10 matches
and Raina, who has contributed with
256 runs, is happy with his and the
team’s performance so far.
Pandey was looking good on 33
from 26 deliveries but was run out as
their middle-order had another forgettable outing while none of their batters managed to convert their starts.
He further backed his fellow batsman especially Suryakumar Yadav
who’s going through a rough patch.
‘The middle order is the backbone
of the team. It’s their job to take the
team through and make it
safe for the side. We did
pretty good. We’re just
waiting for Surya for
some good knocks for
him. He’s a great hitter.
Hopefully all of us will
come good in the future games.’
On Yadav’s unorthodox technique,
he said, ‘It’s risky but it fetches runs.
In Twenty20, batsmen have to invent
runs. This is his batting style but on
other side, it’s a bit risky but as far as
runs are coming it’s good.
Umesh Yadav’s double-wicket first
over, in defence of 167, proved decisive and the fast bowler said SRH
skipper David Warner’s wicket was
important for the team.
‘Warner’s wicket was very important for us. We wanted
an early wicket and we
were extremely happy
to get his wicket. We
had a particular plan for
him and it worked,’ said
Umesh who cleaned
up Warner (4) and
Naman Ojha (0) in
the first over and finished with 2 for 34.
Skipper Gambhir
was pleased with the
team’s allround effort
and stated that opting
to play three spinners
worked for them. KKR
played Johan Botha in

Serena blows away
Sloane Stephens
Madrid, May 5:
World number one Serena Williams
extended her unbeaten record this
season to 22 matches with a routine
6-4, 6-0 win over Sloane Stephens
to move into the third round of the
Madrid Open on Monday.
Serena hasn’t been beaten in the
Spanish capital since 2010 and was
never troubled by her fellow American as she booked her place in the
last 16 in under an hour on court.
The 19-time Grand Slam champion
will face either Victoria Azarenka or
Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round
on Wednesday. ‘She’s such a tough
player. I’ve never won a 6-0 set
against her before, and I don’t think I
can ever do that again,’ said Serena.
‘Today I thought to myself, ‘Wow,
this is one of the reasons I love this
surface.’ It just gives you so many
chances to get in the point and play
yourself into the match. I really love
playing on the clay.’
Caroline Wozniacki set up a third
round meeting with Agnieszka Radwanska as her promising start to the
clay court season continued with a
7-5, 6-0 win over American qualifier
Christina McHale.
The world number five reached the
final in Stuttgart last month and had
too much for McHale after battling
back from 4-2 down in the first set.
Radwanska had an even more
comfortable route into the last 16 as
Serena Williams
she needed just over an hour to dispose of Australian Casey Delacqua
6-2, 6-1.
Wozniacki leads the head-to-head
between the pair 7-4, but this will be
their first meeting on outdoor clay.
There will also be a battle of former
US Open champions in the last 16
as veterans Samantha Stosur and
Svetlana Kuznetsova face off.
Kuznetsova battled past home favourite Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 5-7,
7-5 after over two-and-a-half hours
on court, whilst Stosur eased past
Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-2.
Big-serving Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey booked their
places in the second round of the
men’s event.
Isner overcame France’s Adrian
Mannarino 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, whilst Querrey edged past Australian qualifier
Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-4, 6-7 (5/7),
6-3. US Open champion Marin Cilic
won just his third match of the year
with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jiri Vesely.
Rafael Nadal’s conquerer at the
Barcelona Open last month, Fabio
Fognini, eased into round two 6-2,
6-3 over Santiago Giraldo.
Meanwhile, 11th seed Feliciano
Lopez needed three sets to beat
Germany’s Benjamin Becker 7-5,
3-6, 6-4.
while Brad Hogg (4-0-17-2)
and Piyush Chawla (4-016-1) dominated the SRH

‘India has
potential to
grow at 9 to10 %’
Baku/New Delhi, May 5 (PTI):
Government has initiated a large
number of reforms in its first year of
governance to encourage investments
and the country has the potential to
grow at 9-10 per cent, Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley said.
‘I do believe that India has a 9 or 10
per cent growth potential. To achieve
that we have to invest a lot into rural
infrastructure and irrigation that’s one
area we can move up,’ he said.
Besides, he said, a lot of investment is
required in the infrastructure sector so
that it has beneficial impact on manufacturing. ‘It’s only then we can achieve
a 9 to 10 per cent growth rate and once
we are able to do it for a decade or so,
we can lower poverty rate. It’s only then
I will feel excited about it,’ he said in an
interview to CNBC TV in Baku, capital
city of Azerbaijan.
Jaitley was in Baku to attend the annual meeting of the Asian Development
Bank. The NDA government will on
May 26 complete one year in power
following last year’s general elections.
‘Never in the Indian history, we have
had the government which in the first
one year has undertaken such a large
number of reforms,’ he said.
The government has opened up almost every sector for investment, he
said, adding that whether it is domestic
or international ‘there is an additionality
of investment’.
‘We are trying as far as possible to
ease our processes and when I say
ease our processes, environment
clearances are much faster, infrastructure projects are now pushed, people
don’t get harassed, there is no single
whisper of corruption,’ he added.
On Goods and Services Tax (GST),
Jaitley said, there is broadly consensus
on the issue. ‘I have convened several
meetings of State Finance Ministers. I
have spoken to most political parties
and broadly there is a large consensus,’
he said.

In a twist in the net neutrality issue, Facebook has said it
was opening up Internet.org, which provides connectivity
to people in developing nations, to external applications.
The move came after prominent news organisations in the
country said that they would withdraw from the programme,
claiming that it acted as a deterrant to net neutrality. Meanwhile, a look at crux of net neutrality and the circumstances
that made Facebook come up with a new plan.
Internet, by its birth and conception represents freedom - to access information, whenever a user wants. By its own definition, the free
spirit of Internet cannot be controlled by any
telecom operator or any organisation.
With this concept in mind, the controversy
over net neutrality pitched in. The controversy
later engulfed Internet.org, which had partnered Reliance Communications to provide
free internet access to 33 websites. Following
the controversy, companies such as Cleartrip
pulled out of Internet.org, while Flipkart severed ties with Airtel Zero.
The new hope
l
l
What & How?
The Indian angle
It all started with Airtel’s introduction of a marketing
platform ‘Airtel Zero’ on 6 April which aimed to make
Internet access special for special and privileged
companies, who would pay Airtel for ensuring a faster
hassle-free internet experience for their end customers.
It may be noted that Facebook had partnered with
Reliance Communications to launch Internet.org in
India in February. But a number of e-commerce firms
and content developers pulled out of the service subsequently as activists claimed it violated principles of
net neutrality
Moving forward, as a country with more
than a billion population, India holds immense
potential towards becoming a global hub for
innovation and drive digital enablement of
masses and organisations. Free and unrestricted access to Internet will play a pivotal
role in moving forward in this journey. There is
a need for stringent regulations to ensure that
such incidents of playing with the freedom of
Internet don’t occur again.

AAP to decide on

New Delhi, May 5 (PTI):
The AAP today said that it will

the controversy surrounding Kumar

an illicit liaison with her, only after he
receives a notice from DCW.
The Delhi Commission for Women

the volunteer approached it claiming ‘false rumours’ of his having
illicit relationship with her were
ruining her reputation and that he

She has alleged Vishwas took

Fresh quake
jolts Nepal
Kathmandu, May 5 (PTI):
A fresh tremor of magnitude 4.0
today jolted the quake-hit Nepal,
where the death toll from the April
25 deadly temblor has risen to over
7,500.
The feeble tremor at ‘6:39 am, was
epicentred on the border of Dhading and Nuwakot districts,’ National
Seismological Centre chief Lok
Bijaya Adhikari told PTI.
The two districts which are the
part of Nepal’s Bagmati Zone have
suffered extensively in the 25 April
earthquake which left a trail of death
and destruction.
Several aftershocks have followed
since the 7.9-magnitude quake,
which besides claiming an overwhelming number of human lives
from the remote Sindhupalchowk
district to the heart of the capital
in Kathmandu, have turned people
anxious and paranoid.
‘143 aftershocks of magnitude
greater than 4.0 on Richter Scale
have occurred after the April 25
quake,’ Adhikari said.
‘Today, we also did survey of
some of the eastern parts of the
country like Sindhuli and Udayapur
districts and assessed the damage
there and relief requirements further
thereof,’ he added.

RCB seeks consistency and Kings XI scalp
Bengaluru, May 5 (PTI):
Royal Challengers Bangalore
(RCB) would seek to consolidate
their position in the top four, while
the bottom-placed Kings XI Punjab
would try to end a four-match losing
streak when the two sides lock horns
in an Indian Premier League cricket
match here tomorrow.
Placed fourth in the points table,
RCB is coming off a 24-run defeat at
the hands of Chennai Super Kings
yesterday.
The hosts, led by Virat Kohli, would
be the favourites to emerge victorious against Kings XI Punjab, whose
chances of making the playoffs are
all but over after seven losses from
nine matches.
RCB have four wins and as many
losses in nine matches they have
played so far, while KXIP remained
at the bottom with four points
against their name.
RCB would like to forget their
defeat against CSK and return to
winning ways at the crucial business end of the season. In fact,
a loss here and there could spell
doom for the hosts.
RCB could not get past the paltry
CSK total of 148 for nine as they
were all out for 124 following a
horrendous batting display during
which they lost seven wickets for
27 runs in 5.5 overs.
RCB have struggled to come
good before their home crowd and
lost three matches before pulling
off a 10-over-a-side match against
Kolkata Knight Riders.
With the likes of the big-hitting
Chris Gayle, who missed out
against CSK, A B de Villiers and
Kohli himself in the team, the hosts
can fancy their chances at Chinnaswamy stadium.
Mandeep Singh, hero against
KKR, was unfortunately run out in
the last match but he would look to
impress one more time.
de Villiers, who made 21 in the
last game, would be eager to get
a big one, which is due from his
willow.
On the bowling
front, Mitchell
Starc has infused
confidence into
other RCB bowlers, which was
reflected in the
last game where
David Wiese and Harshal Patel,
took two wickets. The Australian
bowler ended with figures of three
for 24 in four overs.
On the other side, KXIP have made
changes in their playing eleven, often resting Glenn Maxwell and David
Miller, without much gain. Their
batting has been a great letdown
compared to last year when they
reached the finals.
Virender Sehwag, Shaun Marsh
and Maxwell have not managed to
make the kind of impact they were
expected to ahead of the tournament.
KXIP’s bowlers too have been
a huge disappointment with pace
spearhead Mitchell Johnson being
the biggest flop. Barring pacer Sandeep Sharma and left-arm spinner
Axar Patel, the KXIP bowling has
never looked threatening.
(Match starts 8 pm)

Docs at Stanley
Hospital remove
tumour from child
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 5:
A team of doctors from the Government Stanley Hospital here removed
a tumour the size of a ping-pong
ball from the chest of a four-year-old
through a pint-sized hole.
Addressing mediapersons here
yesterday, paediatric surgeon Dr R
Senthil Nathan said P Varshini, had
endured breathlessness since she
was about two months old. She was
admitted at the Government Hospital
of Thoracic Medicine in Tambaram
after her parents suspected the problem to be tuberculosis.
Chest X-rays showed a growth in
her posterior mediastinum, which
is part of the cavity that separates
the lungs from the chest. She was
referred to the Government Stanley
Hospital, and CT scan showed that
the tumour that was compressing her
areola tissue and the lymph nodes
close to the airway, thus causing
breathlessness.
‘We decided to use the VATS (Video
Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery)
techique to remove the tumour,’ said
the doctor.
Explaining the surgery procedure,
the doctor said ‘a 1-cm hole was cut
and a video telescope with a camera
attached to it, is inserted. This will
transmit the images as we made the
incisions.
‘The fluid in the tumour was sucked
out and then we cut out the cyst,’ he
added.
Varshini’s case was tricky, doctors
said. Her tumour was asymptomatic.
‘In any other private hospital, this
would have cost four lakh. But the
surgery at Stanley, was done for free
and the costs under the the Chief
Minister’s Comprehensive Insurance
Scheme,’ Dean Karkuzhali said.

June. The touring side will also play
a practice game prior to the start of
the Test match, according to a BCCI
media release.

tour Bangladesh during July-August.
Bangladesh are currently hosting
Pakistan and the hosts have been in
top form after blanking the tourists 3-0
in the ODIs and the one-off Twenty20.
The first of the two Tests ended in a
high-scoring draw.

TOMORROW’S MATCHES
RCB vs Kings XI Punjab at Bengaluru, 8 pm
M
itchell Starc was riding the highest high of his cricket career, winning
the World Cup for Australia at home with most wickets in the tournament. Then his knee gave in and he was out for about a week and
a half. But ever since he has joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL
2015, Starc has resumed from where he left at the MCG.
In six matches the Aussie left-arm pacer has picked up 11 wickets including
three three-wicket hauls. The last of it came against Chennai Super Kings on
a wicket that is not known to be too kind to the fast bowlers. His figures of 3
for 24 included a wicket-maiden in which he got rid of Dwayne Smith, and it
was the very first over of the match.
Though RCB restricted CSK to 148 for 9, the batting collapsed in the runchase and handed the hosts a 24-run win.
After the match Starc spoke to iplt20.com
about his leadership role
in the RCB this season, the simplicity of his T20 bowling plans and revisited
his battle with Brendon McCullum.
Q: You had a bit of break after the successful World Cup campaign but
you haven’t lost any of your magic...
A: I was only out for nine days, so it wasnt much of a break. I was just getting
my knee right. It is great to come over here and contribute to RCB. Unfortunately
we didn’t get over the line today but I have enjoyed bowling here.
Q: You obviously haven’t had any difficulty in adjusting to the Indian
wickets after bowling in Australia all summer.
A: It is Twenty20 cricket and in this format you cannot over-think. I try to
keep my plans simple because you don’t need to complicate things when you
have only got 24 balls to bowl. I try to make the minor adjustments, if need be
on the day, but overall I try to keep it the same and execute those 24 balls.
Q: You have turned the fortunes of RCB’s bowling attack around since
you have joined them. The team sure depends on you a lot.
A: I will not say they depend overly on me but I like to try and lead the attack
in my own way. It is quite a young bowling unit. I worked with Alan Donald
in the team last season and this year we have pretty much the same attack,
plus one or two fast bowlers. We try to work together and talk about our plans
before each game. I try to bring in some of my experience and lead the boys
along the way.
Q: Did you enjoy revisiting your battle with Brendon McCullum?
A: I did. It was my first game against CSK since I joined the team this season.
I think the World Cup final counts for a few extra but he has got the stick on
me in the IPL so far.

If one was at the stadium last
evening, they would have mistaken Chennai for Trinidad and
Tobago. The locals cheered West
Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo
all the way as he effected two
dismissals - Virat Kohli and Dinesh
Karthik off successive deliveries.
His acrobatic efforts won CSK the
match. Hence there were shouts
of Bravo all around the stadium.
Cops, claps
Security was tight and policemen were deployed in
large numbers in and around
the stadium. Those inside the
venue were the happier lot.
Those who stood guard stood up and applauded
when Suresh Raina reached his half century. There
was cheers everywhere then.
It is home sweet home for CSK.
The M A Chidambaram stadium
has become a favourite hunting
ground the Men in Yellow. The
team led by M S Dhoni registered its fifth win in the stadium
on Monday.
They know the conditions in their
own backyard and managed to
put up a superlative effort. Also
the fact that locals cheer their
home team, has given them more
confidence.

The ‘dog days’ began yesterday. Braving
the heat, people gathered in large numbers in
the stadium for the 4 o’clock start. For a major
portion of the match, many had to sit under the scorching
sun. But that didn’t seem to bother them as long as there
was some electrifying performances on the ground.

e has mostly fronted romantic
and coming-of-age roles but in
‘Bombay Velvet’ Ranbir Kapoor will
be seen in his most intense avatar, something that the actor found
both fascinating and challenging.
Set against the backdrop of 1960s
Prohibition era Bombay, the Anurag
Kashyap-directed movie juxtaposes
a man’s ambition to grow at all costs
with that of a city.
‘It is my most angry role, it is very
intense. I have never even slapped
in my earlier movies. The intensity
is there because of the place that
Johnny comes from. His aggression is
about survival. It is not out of choice,’
Ranbir told PTI here. The 32-year-old
actor, who along with the entire star
cast is in Goa for the film’s promotions, said Kashyap helped him a lot
to get into the skin of the character.
‘Anurag has that intensity. The world of
films like ‘Barfi’ and ‘Bombay Velvet’ is
not familiar to me. The credit should go
to the directors. I am just an instrument.’
Ranbir learnt the cage fighting
style besides mastering the ‘tapori’
language of that era for which his
reference point was Johnny Walker
from the Guru Dutt-Madhubala starrer
1955 film ‘Mr & Mrs 55.’
‘He spoke the tapori language of that
era but since I have an urban image, I
had to ensure that it does not turn out
to be a caricature,’ he said.
