Delivering the verdict in the case that dragged on for over 12 years, sessions court judge D W Deshpande said all charges against the actor have been proved, which included the stringent charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, besides various other offences, including rash and negligent driving and driving under influence of liquor. The judge held that the actor also did not have a driving licence. The prosecution had alleged that Salman Khan was driving without holding a licence and, to buttress its charge, produced RTO records to show that the actor had procured a licence only in 2004, two years after the tragedy. Meanwhile, after snapping their losing streak with a win over Delhi Daredevils, Rajasthan Royals will now look to keep themselves on course for a play-off berth with another dominating show against an inconsistent Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL cricket game tomorrow. The Royals had blasted off to a great start by winning first five matches, before losing their way a bit with three losses and two no results but the 14-run win over Delhi on Sunday arrested the slide. But come tomorrow, it will be a battle between two spin attacks of both teams with DD boasting of Imran Tahir and Amit Mishra and the duo will look to take the maximum out of the slow Eden track. SALMAN GETS 5 YEARS JAIL q Bollywood top star convicted of all charges in hit-and-run case NT Bureau / PTI Mumbai, May 6: Bollywood actor Salman Khan was today convicted by a Mumbai sessions court of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the 2002 hit and run case with all charges proved against him. He was sentenced with five years imprisonment. The judgement in the over 12-yearold case, whose trial saw many twists and turns, was delivered by Judge D W Deshpande in the court hall where the 49-year-old actor and his family were present. Significantly, the court held that Salman was driving under the influence of alcohol and also did not have a driving license. The court relied upon judgements in Alistair Pereira and Sanjeev Nanda BMW case of Delhi while convicting Salman. It also asked what he had to say on the verdict to which he denied charges saying he was not driving the car at the ‘Same driver’ time of mishap. As the court delivered the verdict, Salman had tears in his eyes and stood silently in the dock. After the conviction, his lawyer began arguments on quantum of punishment in the case. A tight security blanket was thrown around the court, where Salman’s family including brothers Arbaaz, Sohail and sister Arpita Khan had arrived early this morning ahead of the verdict. One person was killed and four others were injured on the night of 28 September, 2002 in suburban Bandra when Salman’s Toyota Land Cruiser rammed into a bakery. The victims were sleeping on the Ashok Singh, ‘the driver of Salman who was in the car during the accident in 2002’, drove the actor to the court today morning. A Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate, who conducted the trial under lesser charge of rash and negligent driving, which carries a maximum punishment of two years, had in 2012 slapped the more serious offence of culpable homicide and committed the matter to the sessions court. The popular actor was tried afresh under the harsher charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder which is punishable with imprisonment upto 10 years. While the prosecution had insisted that a drunk Khan was driving the Land Cruiser, the actor had claimed 23 organ harvests in 24 hours q City hospital performs first of its kind fete NT Bureau Chennai,May 6: Sunday was a dark night for five families who lost their loved ones in different incidents, but they came forward to donate the organs which gave a fresh lease of life to 23 people. The age-old pay and use toilets (CMA) could become a thing of past as they would be replaced by free swanky toilets. Chennai has 828 public toilets, including 161 in the extended areas. ‘The green and white cubicles will have louvres on all four sides and a sunroof to allow for optimal ventilation and natural light without compromising user privacy. The fittings and fixtures are vandal resistant, durable and user-friendly. The interiors are seamless and can be easily cleaned with the help of a water jet,’ said a civic body official. Apart from ‘Namma Toilets’, ‘etoilets’ and ‘bio-toilets’ are also on the line to be installed in the city. The e-toilets will be fully automatic and equipped with global positioning system sensors. The bio-toilets on the other hand uses eco-friendly technology and is cost-effective as it breaks down the solid waste into water and biogas. However, there seems few complaints from residents about the locations, as the one at the Elliot’s beach at Besant Nagar was removed. ‘We inspect places where such toilets are needed and only then we allot places for it. Also, residents views are taken into consideration,’ an official said. ‘When we construct new toilets, we will connect them to a sewerage line wherever there is a direct facility available. At places where a direct sewerage line is not available, we will install a septic tank’, he added. He further said that the maintenance of the toilets will be handed over to private parties on annual lease. ‘If they fail to maintain it, the contract will be withdrawn,’ the official said. At Zone-X alone, 25 places have been identified for installing modular toilets including parks, he added. ‘Namma Toilets’ being installed on Anna Main Road, K K Nagar. The American people support comprehensive immigration reform is the right thing to do and because it will strengthen families, strengthen our economy, and strengthen our country, Hillary Clinton said. That’s why we can’t wait any longer, we can’t wait any longer for a path to full and equal citizenship, she said at an event in Nevada in her first major policy speech on providing path to citizenship to some 11 million illegal immigrants, including a large number of Indians. In her speech, she called for a full and equal path to citizenship, endorsing President Barack Obama’s executive actions, and going a step further by supporting an accessible pathway for other sympathetic cases not covered by the President’s action such as the parents of DREAMers to apply for the same deferred action as other groups. She made clear that one of the four big fights driving her campaign will be strengthening families and communities and immigration reform is crucial to that fight. I will fight for comprehensive immigration reform and a path to citizenship for you and for families across our country. I will fight to stop partisan attacks on the executive actions that would put Dreamers- including many with us today - at risk of deportation, she asserted. If Congress refuses to act, as President, she said, she will do everything possible under the law to go even further. The law currently allows for sympathetic cases to be reviewed, but most of these cases have no way to get a real hearing, she said. It may be recalled that A US federal judge in Texas has denied the federal government’s request to lift a hold on President Barack Obama’s controversial immigration plan recently By refusing to lift the ban he issued in February, the ruling halts temporary relief from deportation and other immigration benefits for up to 4.7 million immigrants in the US. The plan was part of Obama’s executive order, bypassing the Congress which had failed to agree on immigration reform. But 26 states, led by Texas, filed a lawsuit to overturn Obama’s executive actions, arguing they are unconstitutional and would force them to invest more in law enforcement, health care and education. CHENNAI Iran nuclear talks to resume US aims to make deal immune to Russian, Chinese veto TEHRAN: The European Commission says negotiators from the EU and Iran will resume talks on a deal to control Tehran’s nuclear program on 12 May in Austria, and that they would be joined by officials from six world powers three days later. The commission said in a statement that EU Political Director Helga Schmid and Iranian deputy negotiators Abbas Araghchi and Madjid Takht Ravanchi will resume their work on 12 May in Vienna. Officials from the P5+1 group of world powers -- the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain, and Germany -- will join the talks on 15 May. The statement said negotiators will continue their work on the drafting of the main text of a framework agreement reached on 2 April in Switzerland after months of talks. The two sides are aiming to complete a deal before a self-imposed deadline of 30 June. Iran has long insisted its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes, mainly to produce energy. Meanwhile, Washington wants to be Bounty on four key Islamic State figures WASHINGTON: The US administration has posted a bounty of $20 million for information on four key figures of the Islamic State (IS), an extremist group it is fighting in Iraq and Syria. The State Department is seeking tips that can lead to the arrest of Abd al-Rahman Mustafa al-Qaduli, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, Tarkhan Tayumurazovich Batirashvili and Tariq Binal-Tahar Bin al Falih al-Awni al-Harzi. Al-Qaduli, once a deputy to the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, rejoined the IS following his release from prison in early 2012 and is operating from Syria, Xinhua news agency cited the State Department as saying in a statement on Tuesday. Al-Adnani is the group`s official spokesman, Batirashvili is serving as a senior commander, while al-Harzi is described as the leader for the border region between Syria and Turkey and chief of its suicide bombers. Last year, they were branded as specially designated global terrorists by the US Department of Treasury. Baker causes stir with ‘tasteless’ 9/11 cake VIENNA: A Vienna baker has stirred up anger by making a cake depicting Austria’s main political parties as New York’s twin towers coming under attack from opposition party aircraft. ‘It’s ironic that a baker has no taste,’ wrote one critic on the website of the masscirculation Heute tabloid that highlighted the unusual creation. ‘I would call this incitement to terrorism,’ wrote another. But baker Thomas Kienbauer defended his work on Tuesday, saying it represented legitimate political commentary. ‘The cake is supposed to represent the collapse of the ‘grand coalition’,’ he told Reuters, referring to the centre-left Social Democrats (SPO) and the conservative People’s Party (OVP) who share power and have dominated post-war politics here. L ICK PIC Self-destructing virus kills off PCs SAN FRANCISCO: A computer virus that tries to avoid detection by making the machine it infects unusable has been found. If Rombertik’s evasion techniques are triggered, it deletes key files on a computer, making it constantly restart. Analysts said Rombertik was ‘unique’ among malware samples for resisting capture so aggressively. On Windows machines where it goes unnoticed, the malware steals login data and other confidential information. Endless loop Rombertik typically infected a vulnerable machine after a boobytrapped attachment on a phishing message had been opened, security researchers Ben Baker and Alex Chiu, from Cisco, said in a blogpost. Some of the messages Rombertik travels with pose as business enquiry letters from Microsoft. The malware ‘indiscriminately’ stole data entered by victims on any website, the researchers said. And it got even nastier when it spotted someone was trying to understand how it worked. ‘Rombertik is unique in that it actively attempts to destroy the computer if it detects certain attributes associated with malware analysis,’ the researchers said. The malware regularly carries out internal checks to see if it is under analysis. If it believes it is, it will attempt to delete an essential Windows system file called the Master Boot Record (MBR). It will then restart the machine which, because the MBR is missing, will go into an endless restart loop. The code replacing the MBR makes the machine print out a message mocking attempts to analyse it. Restoring a PC with its MBR deleted involves reinstalling Windows, which could mean important data is lost. Rombertik also uses other tricks to foil analysis. One involves writing a byte of data to memory 960 million times to overwhelm analysis tools that try to spot malware by logging system activity. Security expert Graham Cluley said destructive viruses such as Rombertik were quite rare. ‘It’s not the norm,’ he said. Smoke and lava explode from Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island. Sports 6 WEDNESDAY 6 MAY 2015 CHENNAI Pressure brings the best out of me: Rayudu Ambati Rayudu qMumbai Indians manage thrilling win over Delhi Dardevils Mumbai, May 6: With an unbeaten 49 off 40 balls Ambati Rayudu steered the Mumbai Indians to victory at the Wankhede Stadium and helped the team climb to the fourth position in the Pepsi IPL 2015 points table. Coming in to bat under trying circumstances, with the team struggling at 40 for four and rain threatening to tip the match in the Delhi Daredevils favour (on the D/L method), the middleorder batsman played a watchful knock to take the team to a much needed win. Fortunately for the hosts, the rain didn’t cause a third interruption and allowed Rohit Sharma and Rayudu to stitch together a 60-run stand to keep their side in the fray. While the captain kept the run rate in check, the middleorder batsman paced his knock to hold the innings together. We had lost four wickets and it was necessary at that point to bat till the end and take the game exactly how we planned it, Rayudu told iplt20. com later. Speaking about the partnership with his captain, he said, There was no discussion as such, we were just trying to bat to the end. It was difficult to plan as such; but if there was a plan, it was to be there at the end. Also known to hit the big shots, Rayudu had been careful to rotate the strike and curb his instincts. ‘It comes with experience to be honest. That is what you learn as you grow as a batsman. It is not about hitting fours and sixes; you have to play according to the situation. I think once you are a seasoned cricketer you know how to handle situations and I am happy that I could do that today. And it gives me immense happiness to come out on top,’ Rayudu expressed happiness at getting the job done. ‘I have played quite a few innings for MI like that. It is just trying to be there till the end and being calm, knowing what I can do and what (Kieron) Pollard can do, and playing to our strengths. It helps when you have played with somebody for a very long time and you know which bowlers he can target and which bowlers I can target. So it makes it all the more easier,’ Rayudu added. ‘Waqar faces ouster’ Karachi, May 6(PTI): Pakistan’s head coach Waqar Younis is likely to face the axe if the national cricket team fails to win the Test series against Bangladesh. Inquiries carried out by PTI have confirmed that the former Test captain, who is now in the second year of h i s coaching assignment with the Pakistan Cricket Board, is facing a possible axe as opinion against his coaching abilities have increased in the board and generally in the cricket community. Even a draw in the second Test is not going to save Waqar’s job. He has to inspire Pakistan to win the Test, an insider in the PCB said. Waqar and the PCB have come under increasing criticism for the team’s recent poor performances which have seen them not win a single match so far in Bangladesh. It is an outrageous situation for Pakistan cricket and if Pakistan can’t win the Test the coaches need to be changed so do the people running cricket affairs in the board, former Test captain Muhammad Yousuf said. People can’t tolerate such performances. Other countries change their coaches if they don’t deliver so what if Waqar is removed what is wrong with that, Yousuf said. The insider said the PCB had made up its mind to even pay Waqar three months pay as compensation if it releases him after the series as his contract runs until April, 2016. Former Pakistan pacer Sikander Bakht felt that Pakistan could win the Test if it rested one batsman and played an extra bowler in the match as the pitches are batting friendly in Bangladesh. Former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif said that Waqar would be desperate to win as his own reputation was at stake now. It was a knock under pressure which the middle-order batsman confessed he relishes. Pressure brings the best out of me. I stay a lot calmer when I have a target it mind and I know how to pace an innings. I am happy that I could do it today, Rayudu stated. With Rohit back in the pavilion, Pollard had joined forces with Rayudu and the pair went about their task in calculated manner. Reiterating his partner’s words, the West Indian said You just back yourself, your strengths and ability. In the last couple of games this is the role I have been given. For me it’s about just ‘see the ball and try and hit it’. The equation was on the scoreboard so we knew what we had to get. The third-seeded Russian and defending champion broke Duque-Marino’s serve four times while saving three break points on her own serve. ‘She is someone who, if you give her time, creates angles, slices and usually drop-shots a lot more than she did in this match because she has the hands and the ability to do Bopanna-Mergea crosses first hurdle Waqar Younis crucial times was always going to be the battle.’ Speaking about the plans they had devised to get to the target, Rayudu added, When it had come down to getting ten runs per over, all we had to do was hit one boundary an over and run the next five balls (for singles). It is exactly what we were doing till the 19th over. We wanted to leave around six or seven runs for the last over; we left eight and it was all about one hit in the next few balls.’ Pollard, who had joined him with MI requiring 53 from 30 balls said, Watching from inside we knew who was to bowl in the final overs. We like to play here at the Wankhede; when you look at it, most of the runs (are) scored at the back end of the innings anyway.’ Madrid, May 6(PTI): Rohan Bopanna and his Romanian partner Florin Mergea came from a set down to get the better of Marin Draganja and Henri Kontinen in the first round of the men’s doubles Tennis event at the Madrid Open tennis tournament here The IndoRomanian pair defeated the CroatFinnish combination 5-7 7-6(5) 10-6 to enter the Round of 32 at the USD 4,660,678 event. India outplays Japan Bhubanewsar, May 6(PTI): After a drab draw in the opener, India dispatched Japan 2-0 in the second game of the four match hockey test series here. Yuvraj Walmiki and Dharamvir Singh scored for the home team. The match had a cracking start where both teams came out attacking. While Japan were looking for a calculative move to enter into the Indian side with their long passes, the hosts were ready to defend and created an initial opening. Despite the efforts of the home team, no goals were scored in the first quarter. In the second quarter, both teams played defensively, waiting for the right moment to strike. Despite positive play from Japan, India took the lead in the 27th minute when Yuvraj Walmiki gave a fine pass to S K Uthappa, who flawlessly struck a delightful field goal. Japan made quick moves and continued to restrict the opponent to get into the circle until Dharamvir effortlessly breached the defence in the 48th minute, landing the ball into the nets taking for the decisive 2-0 lead. No. TN / PMG / (CCR) / WPP-470 / 15-17 WHERE THEY STAND TEAMS ‘Maxwell has disappointed himself’ George Bailey said swashbuckling all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has disappointed himself in the IPL, even as the Kings XI Punjab captain remained optimistic about the team’s chances of making it to the play-offs despite seven losses. Managing just 62 runs from 5 IPL outings, Maxwell is certainly not looking the World Cup-winning Australian player in this cashrich league and Bailey could not agree more. He (Maxwell) absolutely has disappointed himself. The other thing about Maxy is that he plays a unique brand of cricket and sometimes it does not come off as we would like, he said. Bailey said Maxwell took a while to adapt to the different playing conditions in India, which are very different from Australia. ‘He’s come from the World Cup and it took a while for him to adapt. Conditions are different in India and Australia, he said. Bailey also opined that external pressure gets the better of Maxwell at times. He has played enough cricket here and, I think it is the outside world that puts more pressure on him rather than anything else. I am sure he will do far better in the coming games, he said. Even after losing seven of their nine games, Bailey expects his team, which is languishing at the bottom, to make the playoffs as there a r e still Glenn Maxwell few matches to play catch-up with other sides. There is still plenty to play for and we hope to still make it, he said. Unable to get the team’s combination right in this season, Bailey is taking inspiration from Delhi Daredevils show last year, who failed to get going but are a much improved side this year. We are disappointed. But we have the team to turn it around. This is a unique competition. You can chose your teams and then go about it. We have not got the right combination. It can happen to any team. Look at Delhi, they did not do well last season but this year they have done better. There is still plenty to play for and we hope to still make it.’ Bailey blamed the top-order for the team’s failure, but opined that the bowling has been good compared to last season. Our top order batting failure has been the worry for us. The bowling has been pretty good. Last year, bowling was our weakest link. It is disappointing as far as the batting is concerned, but I am confident it will come good, he said. Coming clean after a rehabilitation program post being called for chucking in last year’s Champions League T20, Narine was was once called for a suspect action in this IPL edition and subsequently barred from bowling the off-spinner. Akram insists things will soon fall into place for the champion spinner. He is a hard working guy and I am sure everything will go well for him. KKR need him. Narine has been exceptional for KKR. He bowled us to the championship in 2012, and he contributed immensely last season, the legendary Pakistani pacer told reporters at DPS North Kolkata. Giving an update on his retest for the offspin delivery, Akram said: ‘We are expecting the report on Narine in the next couple of days, which would decide his fate.’ KKR have managed beautifully without their ace spinner, who was instrumental in the Kolkata-based franchise winning the trophy last season, as his replacement in Australian chinaman bowler Brad Hogg has claimed eight wickets in four matches with an Sunil Narine economy o 6.21. Akram gave credit to KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir to ring in the change successfully. ‘The credit goes to Gambhir for being constantly in search for a mystery spinner. A mystery spinner is one whose ball you can’t pick easily. Hogg surely has filled in Narine’s shoes perfectly. This is what Narine has been doing and that is exactly what Hogg is doing.’ The Sultan of Swing also showered praise on speedster Umesh Yadav, whose twin blow in the first over including that of David Warner helped KKR thrash SunRisers Hyderabad by 35 runs. Cummins and his teammates Mayukh Ray, Abhikansh Basu and Sanjay Asmera returned with a team total of 53 points in a star-studded field of KKR players. All-rounder Ryan Ten Doeschate and his team comprising Ankush Singhania, Gurshaan Kohli and Yogesh Bedi carded 56 points to finish the day as runners-up. 44-year-old Brad Hogg showed his energy on the golf course as well when he came back with 57 points along with his teammates Ishan Bajoria, Akshay Pasari and Paresh Patel for the third position. Encountering the wild T he leopard looks right into your eye, so does the Bengal tiger. One wrong move and you are their prey. So vivid and live were the works of artist S Venkatkrishnan, who is exhibiting his paintings at La Galerie D’Expression at Hotel Ambassador Pallava. The show is on till 15 May. His theme, Art Safari, takes the onlookers into the world of the big cats. Ranging from the collection of leopards to Bengal tigers and lions, each of his work brings out emotions of the animals at different times of the day. The elephants in a fight or the hawk in wait for its prey or a stag just grazing in the wilderness show the different layers of colours that is blended into one to bring out an outstanding piece of work. His medium includes, oil colour, graphite and pastels, with graphite dominating this series. He S Venkatkrishnan has inherently caught the beauty of wild animals on canvas in their varied emotions. Venkatkrishnan has been painting ever since he was a child. Raised in an environment where life revolved around wildlife and painting, he naturally chose to blend in. Most of the works are replicas of wildlife photography. ‘My first love is photography. I often go to the zoo and other wildlife sanctuaries to take pictures of animals in different envrions. I had a few from my own collection, while I got few more from my friends when I started this series.’ My father, Santhanam was a famous painter. He was also a State awardee. ‘He was my inspiration,’ says Venkatkrishnan, who works at an insurance company for a decade. This self-taught artist says he has been painting as a hobby. ‘It take at least four to five days to complete one piece. This is my first solo exhibition. I have done several group shows,’ he says. ‘Most of my works revolve around animals. My next series is on birds.’ This resident of Nanganallur can be reached at 94449 23260. — MARIAYN JENNIFER The elephants in a fight or the hawk in wait for its prey or a stag just grazing in the wilderness show the different layers of colours that is blended into one to bring out an outstanding piece of work A few of his paintings on display D Mani Ratnam hospitalised irector Mani Ratnam has been hospitalised in Delhi for cardiac problems. It is virtually a solo release as three other little known films are pitted against it. The film is said to be an enjoyable fun ride. The title is derived from the lead couple who are husband and wife and are at loggerheads always as they always disagree even over small matters. India Pakistan is releasing in nearly 250 screens across Tamilnadu. There is a good buzz around the film as Vijay Antony’s last two films Naan and Salim were commercially successful and he is a minimum guarantee hero. —NT Bureau Published by K.
