Christian Aid Week
10th-16th May
Ever wondered why we do
Christian Aid Week?
Here are 3 good reasons why we’re
involved…
Christian Aid Week has run every year in Great Britain since soon
after the Second World War. Over 20,000 churches take part today
with around 300,000 volunteers giving their time to deliver envelopes
door to door and put on events. Why?
1. Christian Aid has a vision – an end to poverty. Christian Aid goes
beyond emergency relief and works with poor communities to create
wealth. By being part of this week we’re funding life-changing projects.
2. In these difficult financial times, the world’s poorest people need
our financial support more than ever. Christian Aid Week helps us give
people the opportunity to be generous and it works in partnership with
poor communities to find ways to do this.
3. Christian Aid has successfully campaigned on ‘dropping the debt’,
carbon-declaration reform and trade justice. Christian Aid Week helps
world-wide structural change to take place to tackle the root causes
of poverty and change the world for good.
RISTIAN AID WEEK 9–15 May 2010
Special thanks to the Newton Flotman team of collectors for all they
do. Please give what you can when they visit to collect for the very
poorest of the world’s poor.
Sally
Newton Flotman and Swainsthorpe churches are part of the Tas
Valley Team Ministry which also includes the parish churches at
Tasburgh, Tharston, Saxlingham, Shotesham and the Tas
Valley Cell Church. Details of services and events in other
villages can be found in the Tas Valley News Sheet available to
take away in the church porches.
You are warmly welcome in your village churches.

St Peter’s, St Mary’s & the Tas Valley Benefice
A WEEK OF CREATIVE PRAYER
21st-28th MAY
24-7 Prayer started “by accident” in Sept 1999 with a
bunch of young people on the south coast of England
who got the crazy idea of trying to pray non-stop for a
month. God turned up and they didn’t stop until
Christmas!
From there, this prayer movement has spread into many
countries, denominations and age groups including here
in the South Norfolk area. Participating groups pray 24
hours a day for a week in a dedicated prayer room or
large tent.
Anyone can sign up for hour long slots in the room – a chance to pray
alone or with chosen friends. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a regular
churchgoer. The room is equipped with lots of aids to prayer – so you
can light candles, listen to meditative music, paint on the prayer art
board, follow a labyrinth, enter your prayer requests in a book etc.
Being in a room dedicated to prayer like this is often a very moving
experience. Here in the Tas Valley, we’ve joined in Prayer 24-7 for
seven years and have found this way of praying to be great. People
often find that an hour passes like ten minutes, and many prayers
have been answered by God in amazing ways.
To visit the Tas Valley Prayer Space in the Tas Valley, you can sign
up online for hour slots from the beginning of May at:
www.tasvalley.org

St Peter’s, St Mary’s & the Tas Valley Benefice
Towards a Church Building
for the whole Community - Update
A couple of months ago, the old village shop in Newton Flotman was
sold subject to contract. At this point in time we still do not know if the
new owners are planning to open a shop, or if they are, what sort of
shop it might be. Needless to say we would not set up anything that
would compete with a village shop - so we shall continue to wait and
see before carrying on with the vending machine idea.
The vending machine is only one part of what Newton Flotman PCC
are hoping to do to change the building to make it warmer and
more available for community activities, whilst still retaining all the
most important heritage elements and making sure that the church
still works for traditional services such as weddings, funerals, carols at
Christmas etc. As you can imagine there are many checks and
balances in place before an important listed building such as St Mary’s
can be changed in any way.
Many people have seen our concept drawings, and we have received
comments back on the proposals from English Heritage, the Society
for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, the Victorian Society, the
Church Building Council and the Diocesan Advisory Committee. They
have made a number of useful suggestions for us to incorporate
before we can ask our architect to prepare drawings for our faculty
(church planning permission) and for planning permission from South
Norfolk Council.
We are in the final stages of consultation before we ask our architect
to draw up plans for planning and faculty permission. This has taken
longer than we had anticipated as we have been trying to get the
various organisations in common agreement. It is likely that we will
start gathering funds together for the architect during May.

Newton Flotman Preschool News
As preschool returns for the summer
term, let’s hope the weather is kind
enough to allow continuing and full
use of our excellent outdoor
facilities.
Fundraising is always an important
part of preschool activities and as
the children were enjoying the
Easter Egg decorating competition,
£150 was being raised for vital
funds. A big thank you is in order to
all who helped and contributed to
this event. Further events have
been planned in the form of a
sponsored ‘Spring Walk’ during May
and a ‘Body Shop Party’ in June.
Whilst the rest of the country goes
to the Polls on Election Day, our
children will be enjoying a day out at
The Play Barn in Poringland.
Also during the month of May we will be having a ‘Stay and Play’
week during which parents/carers are invited to come and look at the
children’s story learning and to join in with other preschool activities.
Finally, a note for the diary: everyone is welcome to our ‘Open
Morning’ to be held on Tuesday 30th June from 9.30 to 11.30.

Newton Flotman Parish Council Notes - March 2015
Long Stratton Bypass and Additional Housing
It is anticipated that there will be a further opportunity to express our
concerns later in the year during the consultation process. Our current
MP Richard Bacon and Norfolk County Councillor Colin Foulger are
aware of our views regarding the wider impact of this major
development on Newton Flotman and are making representations on
our behalf.
Road Safety
Our Application for a grant to purchase a SAM2 portable speed
monitoring sign has been successful and various sites on Flordon
Road and St Mary’s Close have been identified as suitable locations.
As previously advised, the Parish Council will meet 50% of the cost
(approx. £1,600).

Parking Discipline in the Village
In response to local concerns, the police are monitoring the situation
near junctions to ensure vehicles are being parked safely and in
accordance with the Road Traffic Act. Notices will be issued to those
drivers parked inappropriately.
Short Street – Flordon Road Junction
A number of near misses have resulted from traffic exiting Short Street
without due care and attention into oncoming traffic approaching the
A140. Highways have been requested to consider the use of a ‘Stop
Sign’ at this junction as an aid to road safety.
Newton Flotman Allotments
Following an inspection of the water supply, some urgent work was
necessary to meet the standard required by Anglian Water in order to
obtain the necessary certificate and maintain the supply. This required
the fitting of non-return taps which had to be raised above ground level
at a cost of £187.

Laura Webster has decided not to seek re-election to SNDC. We wish
her well and have thanked her for her efforts on behalf of Newton

Election for Newton Flotman Parish Council
In addition to the General Election on the 7th May, members of the
Newton Flotman community will be required to vote for whom they
would like to represent them on the Parish Council. For several years
this has not been a necessity, as there have been the same number of
nominees as there are positions on the council. i.e. seven. This year,
there are eight candidates so an election is required.
So, what does the Parish Council do? The Parish Council is the first
tier of local government. Parish councils have the power to precept
(tax) their residents to support their operations and to carry out local
projects. Although there is no limit to the amount that can be
precepted, the money can only be raised for a limited number of
purposes, defined in the 1894 Act and subsequent legislation.
Parish councils have powers to provide some facilities themselves, or
they can contribute towards their provision by others. There are large
variations in the services provided by parishes, but they can include
the following examples: the provision of allotments, bus shelters, sign
posts for footpaths, village halls, bins for dog mess, provisions and
maintenance of recreation grounds, parks, children's play areas,
playing fields, control of litter etc.

PC Candidate - Evelyn Domeyer
I have lived in Newton Flotman for over 20 years, have
always worked full time in an accounts environment and
joined W L Duffield in 1999 as a Credit Controller, although now retired I still work for the company for a few
hours per week.
I became a Parish Councillors for Newton Flotman in
2009 in order to represent my local community,
assisting in the decisions to deliver services to meet
local needs, and generally improve the quality of life in the parish and
hopefully the residents will give me the mandate to continue to do so.
I joined the Community Speedwatch scheme in 2011 to effectively reduce the
speed of through traffic on Flordon Road. As the community Speedwatch
co-ordinator and with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers and in
partnership with Norfolk Constabulary we monitor the speed of vehicles and
take necessary actions against motorists who exceed the 30 mph speed limit.
The Parish council was successful in their bid to acquire SAM2 which will be
another tool in order to deter speeding motorists and will make this village a
safer place for all its residents.
PC Candidate - Christopher Remer
I have lived in Alan Avenue with my family for fifteen
years. I am not a current Councillor but am keen to
take on the role as I believe that a refreshed Parish
Council could further improve the quality of life for
Newton Flotman residents.
Parish Councils should be an integral part of the
community, proactively representing the interests of
local businesses, the school, the church, and the
village’s clubs and organisations – all of which help to
keep a village thriving. There should be open
communication between residents and Councillors, and I would actively
promote this. The Parish Council must also continue to operate within its
means whilst working on local issues such as how the Long Stratton bypass
would affect Newton Flotman and keeping the Surgery open.
I bring a wealth of business experience. I spent twenty years in financial
services and project management, and also worked for the Virgin Group,
most recently as Operations Director of their Stem Cell Bank in Qatar. I set
up my own business consultancy and have become a ‘work-at-home Dad’. I
also volunteered at Newton Flotman Primary School, invigilate exams at
LSHS, and have worked with the church on their recent development plans.

PC Candidate - David Gibbs
I have lived in the Village over 40 years and for the
much of that time have served on the Newton Flotman
Parish Council, currently as Chairman.
I was directly involved in the financing and building of a
modern village hall and have previously represented the
Parish Council as a School Governor. More recently I
have made personal representation to our local MP
regarding the need for improvements to the A140
junction and for Newton Flotman to be included in the
overall local plan in parallel with the major developments at Long Stratton.
If re-elected, this will be a matter high on my agenda together with the need
for improved road safety.
PC Candidate - Jean Wilson
I am Norfolk born and bred and have been a Newton
Flotman Councillor for 12 years. I have been involved in
voluntary work since retiring from teaching. I have served
terms of office with county organisations such as the
W.I.,
Citizen’s
Advice
Bureau,
Norfolk
Rural
Community Council as well as village organisations.
My work so far for Newton Flotman has entailed
organising the painting in the bus shelter, raising grants
totalling £35,000 for our play area, raising grants of
nearly £80,000 for football pitch drainage and the protest
meeting when our surgery hours were going to be
severely cut without consultation, as well as my duties as churchwarden (now
relinquished).
I am a “people person“ and the interests of Newton Flotman as a village are
important to me. I consider that I still have the energy, enthusiasm and
experience in the formalities and practicalities of council work to help in
dealing with problems and needs that arise.
PC Candidate - Robert McKelvey
My name is Bob McKelvey and I hope that you will consider me for
re-election to Newton Flotman Parish Council. I have a strong affiliation for
Newton Flotman and want the best for the village. I am a local person. My
grandparents lived in the village and I have lived here for forty seven years.
My two children grew up in the village and attended the school as did my
mother before them. Over the years I have been a willing volunteer on many
village organisations including being Chairman of the Village Hall Committee
and a Governor at the school. I have been actively involved in fund raising for

Health & Wellness by Tranquil Treatments
This month I thought I would give you some information
about Thai Foot Massage.
What is Thai Foot Massage?
Thai Foot Massage originated from India and was
brought to Thailand over 2000 years ago where it is still
highly practised today. It combines acupressure, energy
balancing and massage techniques. Unlike Western
and Eastern massage techniques that focus on tissue
manipulation and working on joints and muscles, Thai Foot Massage
focusses on pressure points, energy lines and basic body force.
How does it work?
Pressure points along the energy lines of the foot are worked on that
correspond to various internal organs in the body. It is believed that
working on these points will release blockages within the flow and
therefore stimulates the body's emotional, physical and energetic
systems.
What happens during a treatment?
You relax whilst laying on a massage couch. It is best to wear a skirt,
shorts or trousers that can be rolled to above the knee, as the knee,
lower leg and foot is worked on. The energy lines and pressure points
are then worked on by using fingers, thumbs, knuckles and a wooden
stick. Most people find this treatment deeply relaxing and achieve a
feeling of well being.
Possible benefits of Thai Foot Massage

improves circulation and toxin removal

stimulates lymphatic drainage


I have been on the Parish Council for many years and have never missed a
meeting in my eight years as Vice Chairman, I am not afraid to offer an
alternative view and can back these views with practical experience. I look
forward to continuing to serve the village.
PC Candidate - Robert Kelf
My name is Bob Kelf and I am married to Linda and
have 2 children Donna and Alan. I have lived in Newton
Flotman for 43 years, and have been a Parish councillor
for 14 years, Previous to that I was on the Village
Centre committee as a member and also chairman for a
number of years.
I have served as a school governor as a parent
governor while my children attend school. I have been
involved with the Scouts at Saxlingham Nethergate for
22 years and have been a Leader and also a member of
the executive committee. I am still working at the
present for Global Diagnostics in Norwich.
I wish to be elected as a Parish Councillor for Newton Flotman as I think I
can still give to the role what is needed, and that is to help in the process of
local government at parish level.
Leisure Centre Improvement Programme
Improvement work to Diss Swim and Fitness Centre is underway,
marking the start of an exciting programme to improve leisure services
across the district. The centre will re-open on Monday 27 April and
until then members will be welcome at centres in both Wymondham
and Long Stratton.
Wymondham Leisure Centre will undergo major improvements from
June, with £3 million earmarked to transform it into a community
hub for all the family, with new and improved facilities such as a soft
play area and spa, new gym and cafe.
In Long Stratton, the Council has been working with the High School,
County Council, Parish Council and sports clubs to plan leisure
improvements for Summer 2016.

Long Stratton Medical Partnership News
The NHS has again been in the forefront of the news in recent weeks
during the run up to the election. Whoever resides in Number 10 after
May 7th has a huge responsibility to adequately fund and protect this
world leading healthcare system. As GPs at the frontline of the NHS
we constantly strive to maintain the high level of service our patients
deserve despite continual pressures and increasing workload. Sadly
fewer newly qualified doctors choose this great specialty and there
are unfilled GP vacancies across Norfolk. We, however, are proud
that we have recruited a fabulous new GP who will be starting this
month following Dr Bamber's retirement.
Dr Stef Moenks is a highly skilled GP who has worked across East
Anglia. Born in Peru and of German nationality she has varied
medical interests including musculoskeletal medicine, Occupational
Health and is trained in acupuncture. She lives locally with her
husband and two young sons. She is held in high regard by her
previous colleagues and will be a fantastic addition to our team. We
very much look forward to working with her.
