After centuries of paving over with

nothing could grow in Manhattan that wasn’t in a pot or Central

As an adolescent forced to

our yard just like the city. Thankfully he totally ignored me.
On the lower east side of
Manhattan, however, the dual “oases” of Peter Cooper Village and

There Is A Cure For The Summertime Blues
As summer slowly approaches and
your spring sales have almost all
been installed, fears of how to fill
the summer calendar with work
begins to set in.
Even though
it was a very long winter and everybody got a late start this year,
that post 4th of July work always
seems to be tough to fill.
If you think about it, it
makes perfect sense. Summer is
when the world slows down a bit
as everybody tries to take advantage of the warm weather. The
days are longer and the nights
are shorter, so there is more
time available to spend outdoors.
School is over until September,
and kids are either going to camp
or maybe working a summer job.
Barbecue season kicks into high
gear and during August, most families try to find time to take a summer vacation. Therefore, the last
thing that anyone wants is to have
their property torn up for those
precious 12 weeks or to be worried about starting a new project.
It can wait until the fall.
On the practical side of
things, we all know that summer
is the worst time to do planting installations, so half of our business
isn't even available to us. What
is a poor landscape contractor
to do? Fortunately, the answer is
that there is a lot he/she can do to
not only survive but actually thrive
during the summer months.
Every year it's the same
thing. Your spring rush miraculously disappears as you burn
through work, only to realize that
come the 4th of July, or rather the
5th, your schedule is looking pretty thin for the rest of July and August. Quite frankly, if it weren't for
pruning, you might not have any
revenue at all. Those 8 weeks from
July 4th until Labor Day, which is
September 1st this year, seems
like an eternity, as you try to keep
the crews busy making money and
not having to lay people off. It's

that for the last three months you

Jody Shilan
Well fear not,
Executive Director, NJLCA
I have a couple of great
ideas that will help you fill these
scheduling voids and solve your
problems forever.
Let's start with a short-term
solution that you can put into action quickly and easily. Everybody
has those pesky and annoying little
repairs or warranty work that you
just can't ever seem to get to. Unfortunately, this bothersome work
is usually from paying customers who feel like they are getting
the run around, because they are.
Why not set up a one- or two-man
crew to bang out these settled pavers, chipped stair treads or small
plant replacements that are hanging over your head and creating a
lot of negative publicity for your
company. Moving forward, stipulate in your proposals that repairs
and replacements are done during
July 5th through September 5th,
unless stated otherwise.
Looking at the long-term
for next year, why not take those
spring clients that want some sort
of deal, don't mind having their
property torn up during the summer or are a hardscape only customer, and give them a discount to
let you do their project in the summer. Now I know this goes against
my, "I don't negotiate" stance, but
this isn't really a negotiation, it's a
"summer special". (Yeah, that's the
ticket). Although you may be shaving a few points off of your profit,
moving a hardscape project from
the spring to the summer, there is
a good chance that you could slot
in some highly profitable spring
planting installations from those
customers who didn't want to wait
4-6 weeks and went with someone
else.
The bottom line is that this
is a cyclical business, regardless if
you believe in global warming or
global cooling. So why not plan
for it instead of fighting it?

clippings. Clippings returned to a
lawn can provide several benefits.
Between the time that they fall and
decompose, they act as a temporary mulch that can lower the soil
surface temperature. As moisture evaporates from the fallen
clippings, the surrounding air is
cooled and stress from heat is further mitigated. Clippings encourage earthworm activity, which not
only increases the water holding
capacity of the soil but, at the same
time, reduces thatch. Thatch can

A. Every spring some of us get a
false sense of financial stability–
until we realize that Uncle Sam
hasn’t been paid yet. That same
feeling of euphoria, followed by
frustration, comes when the beautiful spring lawns we’ve worked on
so hard get hammered by summer
heat and drought. The stress from
high temperatures and low levels
of moisture can change a thick,
healthy turf into a lawn peppered
with problems. The turf’s ability to compete with weeds, resist
disease, and recover from insect
damage are all but gone in just a
few short weeks. Aside from irrigation, it seems as though there is
no recourse except to stand by and
watch its demise.
Fortunately, there are a
few things we can do to combat
the summer’s impairment of a
lawn. First and foremost is raising the height of the mower. Tall
grass can shade the soil more,
significantly reducing the amount
of heat the soil absorbs from the
sun and the amount of moisture
evaporated from the soil surface.
Taller plants grow much deeper
roots which have both better access to water and improved storage capabilities. Water use is actually increased slightly from the
greater amount of leaf surface area
of taller plants. The physical process of evapotranspiration of moisture through the leaves, however,
can cool the ambient temperature
by 7-14 degrees (F). The longer
the grass can stay green, the longer the cooling mechanism can remain working. But make sure the
lawn is not growing in compacted
soil. No matter how high you cut
the grass, its roots will not penetrate very deep into the soil if it’s
compacted.
VAM is an acronym for Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizie.
This is a family of beneficial fungi
that attach themselves to the roots
of perennial plants and reach into
the soil’s depths for moisture
and mineral nutrients. They exchange these with the plant for a
small amount of photosynthesized
carbohydrate. This symbiotic relationship exists in over eighty
percent of all grass species, and
can increase the plants’ heat and
drought resistance significantly.
Unfortunately, if fungicides are
introduced into a lawn, that relationship may be compromised or
eliminated.
Combating disease
with well aged compost or a pro-
gram of building soil organic matter using natural organic fertilizers will not only provide long term
disease protection, but will also
encourage the useful relationships
VAM’s have with turf. Additionally, anything we do that improves
the quantity and quality of our
soil organic matter will improve
the water holding capacity of the
soil and the drought resistance of
plants growing in it.
Another non-action we
can take is to stop bagging grass

Why a Little Pruning Now, Makes a Big
Difference Later
life of a tree.
Ideally, structural pruning begins a few
years after planting. At planting time,
pruning should be limited to removing
dead, broken or damaged limbs. Minimal or no pruning at this time allows for
maximum leaf surface area to remain for
photosynthesis to occur, maximizing carbohydrate production and storage in twigs
and branches, building reserves for rapid
root and trunk development. The training
process should be gradual and spread out
over the course of a few years (3-5 or more)
with removal of not more than about 10 25 percent of the canopy in any one year.
Pruning should enhance the natural shape,
growth habit and the structural strength
and balance of the tree.
The preferred time to do structural pruning for most trees is during dormancy just
before buds swell in late winter or early
spring. This will maximize growth and take
advantage of a full growing season to heal
and compartmentalize pruning wounds
and minimizing risk of pest problems associated with wounding.
Look to achieve the following:
Remove Dead, Dying, Diseased or Broken Branches Defects such as these pose a risk
to the health of the rest of the tree providing a food source for rot fungi and disease
pathogens to spread from the dead wood to
the live tissue. Removal allows new growth
to fill in voids early in the development of
the tree. Identify and Remove Rubbing or Crossing
Branches Repeated wounding, from the
movement of branches caused by wind,
causes entry sites for rot fungi, disease
and insect pests. Develop One Central Leader
Most trees will benefit and develop good strong structure if there is one
central leader. Often a tree will form a
pair of codominant stems, forming a weak
union. Left alone, included bark sometimes forms. This is bark embedded in the
union between the stems, further weakening the structure over time. Removing one
stem early in the life of a tree, usually the
weaker of the two, allows for a strong sin-
gle leader to develop.
Identify Lowest Permanent Branches Determine at what height the
lowest limb(s) will be desired. What kind
of activities might occur under the tree.
Will there be pedestrian, automobile or
commercial truck traffic? Will the tree
be viewed from a distance as a specimen
tree? Will recreational activities and clearance for mowing equipment be a factor?
Keep in mind that the canopy should be
the upper 2/3 of the height of tree at maturity. During the first few years consider
leaving a few temporary lower limbs below
those identified as permanent lower limbs
to help a young tree develop by producing
and storing additional carbohydrates and
shading the sensitive bark of young trees
from sun scald and prevent frost cracks.
Identify Scaffold Branches These branches should have
wide angles of attachment to the trunk
(ideally 45° - 60°), should radiate outward
from the trunk and alternate vertically up
and down the trunk at an even spacing of
12 inches for small trees and 18 inches
for large trees if possible. Limbs that are
paired too close to one another, next to or
directly above or below should be assessed
and one of the pair should be removed.
In the years following structural
pruning of young trees, periodically monitor growth and development, checking that
lateral branches have not grown higher
than the leader or have grown beyond the
perimeter of the canopy. Also look for lateral branch growth that is inconsistent with
the natural growth habit and established
pattern of scaffold branches. Remove
crossing branches or those with unusual
directions of growth if possible. In some
species of trees, extensive pruning will encourage vertical, fast growing shoots called
water sprouts along scaffold branches and
suckers from roots or trunk beneath the
ground. These shoots should be removed
because they develop weak branch unions,
cause dense growth in the crown blocking
sunlight and air circulation and sometimes
alters the natural growth habit of the tree.
Once trained and nearing maturity, follow

Soil Solutions
produce allelochemicals as they
decompose.
Some researchers
believe that these allelochemicals
suppress crabgrass germination.
The nitrogen inherent in clippings
is a perfect slow release fertilizer
that can help grass stay vital during stressful periods. Clippings
left behind have also shown disease suppressive properties which
can offer some protection during a
time of year when plants are more
susceptible to infection.
Be on the lookout for heat
tolerant cool season grasses. Researchers have discovered that certain varieties of perennial ryegrass
exhibit more competitive behavior
during periods of high temperatures. Isolating these strains for
breeding is sure to follow.
Irrigation, if available, is
the ultimate treatment for stress
caused by heat and drought. The
misuse of this tool, however, can
do more harm than good. Researchers disagree on the ideal
frequency and duration of irrigation. Some believe that deep and
infrequent watering is best, while
others feel that high frequency,
low volume irrigation is optimum.
Very little research has been done
on irrigation frequency and volume and the small amount of data
available suggests that light watering (one tenth of an inch) on a daily basis is best for relieving heat
and drought stress. But, that only
addresses heat stress, and not always water needs. Most of a light
application of water evaporates
and doesn’t seep down far enough
into the soil. To replace water lost
during prolonged drought, an inch
of water applied weekly is typically warranted. Common sense
dictates, however, that there is
no ideal irrigation program that
fits every situation. Under certain
conditions, such as deep sandy
soils with little water holding capacity, low volume, high frequency irrigation may be more ideal.
But this may be inappropriate for
heavy soils that do not dry out as
quickly. Avoid irrigation during
spring months unless absolutely
necessary. Slightly drought-stress
turf in spring sends roots deep
into the cool soil in search of water. Those deeper roots will pay off
later in the season.
Monitoring moisture levels
with a moisture meter is a good
idea, but the optimum amount of
moisture varies in different types
of soil. It is necessary to analyze
the texture of a soil to determine
the ideal amount of moisture it
can hold. If a lawn care company
works with many different types of
soils in a given region, it may be
expensive to do a texture analysis
of each property’s soil. This information, however, is very valuable.
Too much water from irrigation can cause more stress to
turf than none at all. Waterlogged
soil contains little or no oxygen, an
essential element to the roots of
plants. The stress from suffocating roots is just as detrimental as
the stress caused by heat and/or
drought. Over watering can result
in the leaching of more nutrients,
especially nitrates, than any other
factor. The loss of these essential minerals can not only stress
the plant but also pollute ground
water. If pesticides are used on
a lawn, improper irrigation can
carry toxins into the water supply.
The EPA estimates that 10.4% of
the community water system wells
and 4.2% of rural domestic wells
in the U.S. contain at least one pesticide or pesticide degradate at or
above acceptable levels. This estimate comes from a study conducted between 1988 and 1990, where
approximately 94,600 drinking
water wells were sampled. Common sense irrigation is usually the
most appropriate.

When To Invest
When you are growing after a dry
period, it can be difficult to trust
that the growth will be consistent
and equally hard to let go of old

couple of years ago but may not be
so good today. Reality is that our
clients are changing the way they
find us, what they want from us,
and how quickly they want it and
we need to be equally flexible to
serve them and stay ahead of the
curve.
I have heard a couple of
business coaches say things like
“the people who take you to $500
K are probably not the people who
will take you to $ 1M” and similar things like that. They mean of
course employees, that we always
need to be evolving our people
or changing them out if they cant
grow. This is certainly true and
it is equally true that the systems
that took us to $ 500K are nto the
ones that will help us serve clients
at $ 1 M. Yet, we have systems that
have worked for us for some time
why change them?
Because of the internet,
clients find us faster and cheaper
than ever before as long as we in-
vest in the Google game. The internet is also educating our clients all
the time, teaching them about what
we do, giving them vehicles for
checking prices, reading reviews
about us and so much more. The
biggest thing the internet is teaching them is that they can get what
they want faster
than ever and
that means we
need to be quick

the wants and needs of a prospect,
or for that matter, an existing client, before we try to sign them up
for some service. There is a better
way and it is a simple sales process that will net
you more work,
help you to create content clients, put money
in your pocket
and plant a smile
on your face.
First,
establish rapport
(an
emotional
Roger Feit
bond or friendly relationship
between people based on mutual
liking, trust and a sense that they
understand and share each other's
concern) with a client… “No one
cares what you say until they know
you care,” says
Zig Ziglar.
To
create
rapport,
ask general and
specific
questions and listen
intently to their
answers. For example, “How long
have you lived
here?” “What is
most important
to you about your
garden?” “What
gives the most joy in your landscape?” “Were you not happy with
your previous service?” “Why?”
Be observant and look
around you to spot evidence of
the person’s passions. It may be
golf, surfing, boating, vintage cars,
pictures of family; it could be their
garden itself or lots more. Ask
them questions about these things
and follow up with more questions
if you see them lighting up. Everyone loves to talk about their passions and it is good for their souls
to focus on them.
Through this process, you
will feel connected to your client
6 Wishes of a Dying
Landscaper
If you die with the most toys and fastest cars, have you succeeded?
Research shows that at the
end of your life you will measure your
success differently. In any event, dying
with the fastest cars won’t get you in to
heaven - and there is always someone
with a faster car.
Use this article and the “wishes of a dying entrepreneur” as a checklist to make sure your business is giving you the life of your dreams.
1. "I wish I let myself be successful"
Entrepreneurs try hard to bend the
will of the universe to their own vision,
and yet the world has its own way of
working things out. You have a choice
of being frustrated or being happy and
successful. Aim for success, not perfection
What could you do at work
and at home to create more happiness?
How much more could you
accomplish if you aimed for "success"
as your goal instead of perfection?

time management skills, efficiency and
priority. Just because you are working
for you family, doesn’t mean your family wants you to always be working.
What personal activities do
you want to do this week for yourself? Schedule it before your schedule
work.
What family activities do you
want to do this year? Put them on
the schedule now, before work takes
over.
In a separate study, many dying people
said they wished they had spent more
time barefoot. How about you?
5. "Who's life was I living?"
Most expectations are self
imposed; coming from self-talk, both
positive and negative. Don't go to your
death bed trying to please everyone
else but yourself. The key to entrepreneurial success is embracing your
own vision and seeing it through.
What expectations do you
have for yourself that you want to fulfill this year?
What would success look like
a year from now if you followed your
own compass?

The old expression that no

space that used to work but does not
any more, operating with equipment
that once worked for yu but does not
any more, operating with procedures
that once worked but you have out
grown and possibly working with people that are not keeping up with the
changes that need to happen for your
business to grow.
Recently we moved to a larger
space, much bigger than we needed actually. The costs wee double our current location and additionally we have
a year left on some of our existing operation. We have been in the new space
ten days and our trucks get in and out
in half the time they did in the original
configuration and we are still finding
efficiencies we can drive to make up
for the additional costs. The way we
look at it, if we break even from a cash
perspective-save just as much as our
additional expenses- we still come out
ahead. Our teams ee the operational
difference and are liking it, our clients
see the new level of responsiveness
and they like it. In the last ten days
we have had two large clients refer us
to two new large clients because when
they called we cold respond much
more quickly than we could from our
old configuration. Thats priceless!
We were strangling ourselves
in our old space with our old systems,
now we are creating new systems that
get us off the line faster and prepared.
How many other self limiting ideas
are you rolling with? Chances are
any system or operating concept that
is two years or more old needs to be
re-examined and/or replaced because
the market is changing much faster
than that. The businesses that will will
move into the future with rapid growth
will be the ones that are lithe and lean
when its appropriate. If you run a performance engine on fuel thats too lean,
the engine will fail to perform as specified.
This is not rocket science by
the way. No outside consultant needed
to figure this one out, simply look at
the operational problems that keep
coming up and look at ALL of them as
a whole and you will start to see a pattern. For us we thought pattern was “
why cant these guys make this work”?
But the reality was the system sucked
and needed to be changed. In ten days,
the same guys who “just wont get it”
are energized because all of sudden its
much easier to do things the right way.
When its easier to get it right the first
time everyone feels better. Sit down
and make a list of all the breakdowns
and minor frustration yu and your
team are experiencing and make the
changes you need to feed that engine!
