Aboriginal Job Shadow Program
Student Job Descriptions
As a part of the Aquatera team, students in the Aboriginal Job Shadow
program can expect to be placed in two different departments
throughout their work experience period.
These departments include: The Waste Management facility, the Eco
Centre and Customer Billing/Metering. Each student will be in two
departments for a length of two weeks.
Below are the tasks, duties and responsibilities for each department.
Waste Management Facility









General site maintenance
Weed control
Lawn maintenance
Litter pick up
Painting
Shop cleaning and maintenance
Sorting bottles and Styrofoam
Learning basic scale house operations
Learning about waste screening and safe disposal
Eco Centre







Data entry for violation sheets (for both garbage and recycling)
General yard maintenance
Weed control
Lawn maintenance
Litter pick-up
Sorting bottles and Styrofoam
Provide assistance in picking up electronics from businesses (must be
able to lift 25kgs)
Customer Billing/Metering
Call Centre
 Listening in on calls with the training headset.
 Assisting CSR’s with Call Centre with tasks such as: filing, shredding,
closing work orders, counting work orders and entering in statistics
and preparing work order schedules for technicians, take mail to mailroom, etc.
Billing
 Shadowing our billing process
 Assist our billing technicians with tasks such as: Filing, inserting bills,
shredding work orders, calculate high usages, etc.
Metering
 Go on “ride-alongs” with technicians to observe duties such as: water
turn on/off, meter installs, meter exchanges, meter reads and notice
delivery.

What do your local playground, City Hall, Revolution Place Arena and the bird watchers dock at
Crystal Lake have in common? They are all kept in top-notch condition by the Facility Maintenance Department.
Together, with various contracted Service Providers to assist our team when necessary, we ensure that these, and many other City facilities are maintained to the highest standard for citizens and visitors alike to enjoy all that Grande Prairie has to offer.

PARKS
What We Do
Parks Operations is responsible for the care and maintenance of green space within the City of
Grande Prairie, including parks, sports fields, easements and roadside ditches. We are committed to maintaining a vibrant park and trail system to help our citizens enjoy a healthy and active all-season outdoor lifestyle.
Students should be prepared to do physically demanding jobs for long periods of time. These
jobs can be:

Weed removal using either pulling or digging methods

Shoveling dirt or removing sod by digging

Shoveling gravel

Picking litter/rocks on boulevards, parks and ditches. Students should be aware that litter can comprise of really disgusting things (including dog poop).
WHO ARE WE?
Horizon North Logistics Inc. is a full-turnkey service company that provides workforce accommodation and ancillary services to many Natural resource projects throughout the west
that require a remote operation. Horizon North has six (6) defined and complimentary business units; which consist of: Manufacturing, Camp & Catering Services, Power Systems, Relocatable Structures, Transportation and Swamp Mats. Our operations are located in: Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Kamloops, with the main corporate office located in Calgary,
Alberta.
HORIZON NORTH TRANSPORTATION
Horizon North Transportation is a vertically integrated business that transports “Heavy
Equipment”, matting and relocatable structures, throughout the western provinces and
Alaska. As a part of our Transportation division we employ Heavy Duty Mechanics and
Welders. They provide support for all Heavy Duty fleet repair and maintenance at our
Grande Prairie location. We also provide preventative maintenance and repairs for a large
fleet of automotive equipment.
INTRODUCTION TO TRANSPORTATION
As part of our commitment to the Aboriginal Job Shadow program, our Transportation unit is
seeking one candidate at our Grande Prairie facility. This placement will provide a full
spectrum of opportunities to the candidate and a variety of career opportunities in the
construction trades, some examples include: Heavy Duty Mechanic and Welding.
EXPECTATIONS:
·
Regular hours of work are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm;
·
There are two 15 minute breaks at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm each day and a one hour
lunch break from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. We take all breaks on-site so we ask students to
bring their own lunch;
·
We ask that students arrive fit for work;
·
This is a safety sensitive position and as such requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing;
·
Gloves, hard hats, safety glasses and safety vests are provided but students are expected to supply their own CSA approved – over the ankle steel toed protective footwear;
·
We ask that students be prepared to do physically demanding work for extended periods of time;
·
Personal cell phone use is restricted to break times only;
·
For any reason if you cannot come to work, your workplace coordinator is required to
contact our office.
On April 1, 2015, Norbord Inc. acquired Ainsworth LP including the Grande Prairie Operations.
Norbord is a leading global manufacturer of wood-based panels and the world’s largest producer of Oriented Strand Board (“OSB”).
As part of our commitment to the Aboriginal Job Shadow program, the Grande Prairie OSB mill is
seeking a candidate for an opportunity within our Woodlands Group. This placement will have
diverse opportunities to experience the variety of career opportunities with Norbord.
WOODLANDS PLACEMENT
The Grande Prairie Woodlands group is responsible to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of
logs to the OSB mill on a sustainable basis. This Job Shadow opportunity offers exposure to all
levels of the Norbord Woodlands program including the development of harvest plans (cutblock
and road design, and associated fieldwork), the operational phases of getting logs to the OSB
Mill (harvesting, processing, road construction, loading, hauling, and reclamation activities) as
well as the preparation and management of reforestation activities.
Specifically, the Woodlands Job Shadow Student will observe:

Preparation and management of Silviculture plans (growing of trees, preparing areas for
planting, planting of trees, and monitoring the growth of trees);

How the impacts of wild fires, insects, diseases or pollution on forests are addressed;

Preparation and management of engineering plans such as road layout and construction, bridge construction and culvert installation;

Supervision of mechanized timber harvesting operations ensuring minimal timber damage
and waste, and to minimize the impact of harvesting on aesthetics, wildlife, soil and water
resources;

How various forest land use activities such as recreational activities, domestic grazing,
mining, and oil and gas drilling operations are incorporated into timber harvest plans
(including associated fieldwork); and

How technology (Global Positioning Systems, and computer models) is used in forest management.
The Woodlands Placement runs during the day starting at 8:00 am and ending at 4:30 p.m. and
will occur in both the office and field environments, under variable weather conditions.
The term, “Seven Generations” is a human ecological concept that originated with the Great Law of the Iroquois. It compelled
leaders to make decisions that would benefit their people seven generations (which by today’s standards is roughly 200 years) into
the future. It is a sustainability concept that is just as appropriate today as it was half a millennium ago. In using the is concept as

JOB SHADOW OPPORTUNITY
Your four-week placement with Seven Generations Energy will provide exposure to the many career opportunities that we offer.
Your placement will include exposure all aspects of gas and oil production including:

Employee safety

Production operations including exposure to gas processing, instrumentation and measurement

Environmental management such as baseline surveys and environmental stewardship

Drilling

Production engineering

Completion activities including fracing of horizontal wells

Fabrication yards

Office work such as well files and completion office

WEYERHAEUSER
Pulp Mill Technician
Overview
Technicians within the pulp mill fall mainly into one of two functions, operations and
maintenance.
All positions require a commitment to safe behavior including: following all safety rules and
instructions, assessing each task for risk, asking questions when uncertain, and active
participation in the safety program. The Job Shadow position will provide students with the
opportunity to experience the work and the conditions associated with many aspects of
both functions.
Maintenance:
Positions in maintenance involve performing preventative maintenance tasks and repairing
or adjusting equipment, and carrying out specialized maintenance functions such as welding, machining, or storeroom. There are a number of trades involved including:

Millwright

Electrician

Instrument mechanic

Welding

Heavy duty mechanic, and

Machining.
Working conditions for maintenance involve work in the process areas. Work areas may be
dirty, noisy, and in some cases may present hazards that require special equipment. Periodic heavy work is required.
Overall Qualifications
To be a pulp mill technician at Weyerhaeuser you must:
 Be committed to working safely and contributing to the safety of others
 Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
 Be able to quickly learn new skills
 Be able to work effectively without supervision
 The minimum education requirement is completion of grade 12 or a GED
 In addition to the above requirements the following special requirements apply:

Operator in Utilities and Chemical Department requires Fourth Class Power
Engineering, English 10, Math 10 Pure, and Science 10, Physics 10, or
Chemistry 10.

Instrumentation Mechanic requires Math 20 or 23, or Pure Math 20, or
Applied Math 20 and 10 credits in High School Science.
