INTRODUCTION Conventional energy sources are depleting day by day, and thus gets reflected the increasing energy costs, as well. Presently, various options for the use of alternative energy are being pursued vigorously by engineers. In this context, the efficient utilization of all renewable energy sources is very significant. The renewable energy sources, derived primarily from the enormous power of the sun’s radiation, are the most ancient forms of energy used by humanity. Early human societies were built on the direct use of solar energy. Of late, there is renewed interest in harnessing solar radiation, both by direct and indirect methodologies with the aim of satisfying the ever increasing energy needs. This course is expected to provide a comprehensive coverage on solar energy utilization for the benefit of teachers, students and practicing engineers. .OBJECTIVES To create awareness on renewable energy sources To introduce the basics of solar energy To discuss about the various types of solar systems To highlight the utilization of solar energy To elaborate the developments in solar systems. To explain the concept and design of various solar energy systems COURSE CONTENT Energy scenario Basics of solar energy Introduction to solar energy systems Water and space heating systems PV and thermal power systems Solar based hybrid systems Solar drying and desalination systems RESOURCE PERSONS Faculty experts of NITC and invited experts from industries or other research organizations.
