11:15 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
CONSIDER/COMPARE
Galleries, 3rd Floor
Attached are suggestions of artworks to view in five categories. Your mission
today is to spend about 15 minutes per category looking closely at one or
both of the recommended pieces. You can look at these works in any order.
Grab a stool near the elevators on the 3rd floor, park yourself in front of the
works, settle in, and just let your eyes explore the compositions. RESIST THE
URGE TO LOOK FIRST AT THE ARTWORKS’ LABELS! Look first, read later. Make a
mental note of your initial reactions, observations, and questions.
If you would like a more structured experience, consider the following
questions:
• What was your initial response to this piece?
• What did you notice first? What did you discover after looking
longer?
• What’s going on in this work?
• What mood has the artist conveyed? How has she done so?
• What makes sense? What confuses you? What questions does this
work elicit?
• Comparing this piece to its companion, what’s similar? What’s
different? Why do you think they were paired?
• Do you like this work more or less the longer you spend with it?
• How might this work relate to you and your life?
Keep in mind there are no wrong answers or responses to artworks. Just
have fun!
12:30–2 p.m.
