Located on the south side of State Route 39
the Johnson Loop is a hidden treasure. The
parking area is accessed by turning south
onto Hidden Hollow Lane and parking at
the trail head entrance. The Johnson Loop
offers visitors two ponds, open fields and
some wooded sections. Norma’s favorite
place on the entire NJC property was on
top of the Johnson Loop near the gas wells.
The NJC consists of 303 acres. The Tuscarawas County Commissioners own 240 acres
and the Tuscarawas County Soil and Water
Conservation District owns the
remaining 63 acres.
At the yellow pole barn, located on SR 39 just 3
miles west of I-77 Dover Exit 83 hikers can experience the Preservation Loop. While exploring the
hills, scenic views and open areas of the Preserve
hikers will notice different groves of younger trees.
Most of these trees were planted by Norma and her
father. This part of the property was reclaimed
after the mining process due to the Reclamation
Act in the 70’s. There are two ponds located in this
loop.

The parking lot, red barn, public restroom
and picnic shelter can be found by turning
north from SR 39 onto Old SR 39 and then
Conservation Drive. The Conservation
Loop offers hikers lots of opportunities
such as the wooded and open trails, bluebird trails, conservation land labs and installed practices, a pond three walking
bridges, a suspension bridge, a meadow,
wetland, amphitheater, floating observation
deck, clubhouse and observation blind.
This part of the property was not reclaimed
so high walls and coal spoil can be found
during your hike.
