North Star Unsung Heroes
The annual Unsung Hero Awards Ceremony took place in the St. Charles North High School Auditorium before
school on the morning of March 18. This recognition is a way we honor and applaud the “behind the scenes”
students; the unassuming helpers, the givers, those always anticipating the needs in the classroom, the
activity, or the sport. The exceptional contributions by these honorees have been a very meaningful part of our
school life, and this award acknowledges their commitment to making a difference in the lives of both students
and staff in “North Star Country”. Congratulations to our Unsung Heroes!

Pen of the Principal
The end of the school year is fast approaching. With so much going on this spring, I am going to again share my
thoughts and information in a more structured way.
Bullying Prevention Task Force
Our student Bullying Prevention Task Force began its work right after Spring Break. The task force is a team of
16 students from all grade levels, with equal numbers of males and females, and with diverse interests in and
out of school. Conversations began with a focus on what the “Perfect High School” would look like, sound like,
and feel like. Students next discussed the topic of bullying as they identified words that they believe belong in
our working definition and understanding of the term bullying. One example of a statement shaping the
conversation was, “Bullying is always mean, but being mean isn’t always bullying”. Next steps for the task
force include solidifying the definition, reviewing data from previous student surveys, and identifying what else
they would like to know from their peers to guide them in determining how we as a school community can
strengthen our culture of mutual respect, acceptance, and support.
Celebrations
In addition to celebrating the success of our spring athletic teams, the accomplishments of our clubs, the staging
of our school musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, and the achievements of our graduating class, we have the
following to celebrate.


Nikolette Manna has been selected as one of the 200 Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois Class of 2015.
Mrs. Hayes was nominated by student Jack McGraw and recognized on WGN News as the March Teacher of the
Month.
PARCC
The final sequence of PARCC tests for the 2014-2015 school year are scheduled to be administered during the
week of April 27. Following feedback from parents, students, and staff regarding missed class time, the
schedule has been revised to minimize the number of days. In addition, conversation amongst teachers,
administration, and Instructional Support Coaches regarding planning and support for students missing a class
due to the testing schedule is on-going.
End with Pride
As the weather continues to warm and the end of school year events are upon us, I would like to remind
all students of the importance of exiting this year with pride and perseverance. Keep focus on your goals – both
academic and futuristic. Remember, actions speak louder than words and your actions not only represent you
but impact those around you as well.
I am very proud to serve as your principal, and I look forward to a terrific and celebration-filled end of the
2014-2015 school year.

Attention Juniors (cont’d)
College visits are a crucial piece of the application process. We encourage you to visit as many college campuses as you
can. Finding the right fit is so important!
Naviance is an excellent resource for finding information about majors, careers, and colleges. You will be using this
program next year as you complete your college applications. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the unique
abilities Naviance has to offer.
On March 3 and 4, Juniors took the ACT and Work Keys at school. The score from this test may be reported to colleges.
There is an additional opportunity to take the ACT on June 13 at St. Charles East High School. The registration deadline is
May 8. For more information or to register, please visit www.actstudent.org. Information is also available in the Guidance
Office.
The SAT will be offered at St. Charles North High School for interested students on Saturday, June 6. The registration
deadline for this test is also May 8. You may register or get more information at www.sat.collegeboard.org. Information is
also available in the Guidance Office.
Attention Seniors
It’s hard to believe that you are in the home stretch already! Please update Naviance regarding your college choices and
commitments. If you haven’t done so already, you must notify your college of choice by May 1. Counselors will be meeting
with you during PE classes on May 14 to complete your final transcript request.
Our Senior Honors Night will be held Thursday, May 7. We will recognize seniors who have won scholarships, both at the
college of their choice and from local businesses and organizations. If you have been offered a college scholarship, will be
attending that college, and wish to be honored that night, please fill out the green “Senior Honors Night” Form that was in
your senior packet and return it to the Guidance Office. If you have received any other kind of scholarship from a local
business, organization or company, please let Mrs. Porter in the Guidance Office know so you will be invited to this
“Invitation Only” event.
As we approach May, our thoughts are turning to the end of the year and graduation. A packet of information for seniors
and their parents/guardians was sent home in early April. Please be sure to review this information carefully. Graduation is

PARCC Testing
Public school districts in Illinois are required to assess students for the purpose of educational accountability as mandated
by the United States Department of Education. This year, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and
Careers (PARCC) assessments will be administered in place of the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE). The
PARCC assessment will measure student proficiency relative to the Common Core State Standards, which were adopted by
the Illinois State Board of Education in 2010. Information about the PARCC assessment, including format, sample test
items, and information about scoring, is available at http://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/.
During March, all students enrolled in English 9 and Algebra I, regardless of grade level, took the PARCC PerformanceBased Assessment (PBA). At the end of April, the same group of students will be taking the PARCC End-of-Year
Assessment (EOY). More specific scheduling information will be mailed home separately.
The PARCC tests are taken electronically on computers in our LRC and using laptops at various locations in the building.
Students not testing on these days (i.e. all students not in English 9 and Algebra I) will attend their regularly scheduled
classes.

STUDENT SERVICES
Ms. Sharon Stec, Assistant Principal
News from the Nurse
Parents of Seniors
A copy of your student’s immunization records will be sent to you during April in the graduation packet.
Immunization records are an important document similar to a social security card or driver’s license. I suggest
that these records be kept in a safe location. Please make copies before sending the immunization records to
anyone.
If your student has not received the HPV vaccines or the meningitis vaccine, I would encourage him/her to
discuss these vaccines with their healthcare provider. If you have any questions regarding your student’s
immunization records, please contact the Nurse’s Office before the last day of school. The Nurse’s Office is
closed during the summer.
Parents of Juniors
A new immunization requirement goes into effect in the fall of 2015. Students entering grade 12 in the State of
Illinois must be immunized for meningitis. Even though many students have received one meningitis vaccine,
the new law states that 12th grade students must receive two meningitis (MCV4) vaccines to be fully
protected. However, one dose of the MCV4 is sufficient for students entering 12th grade if the first dose
was administered on/after the child turned 16. According to District 303 Policy, students without proof of
receiving the MCV4 vaccination will be excluded from school. The only exceptions are students with an
approved medical or religious exemption on file with the school nurse.
Parents of 9th – 12th grade students – Medication Pick-up Reminder
Please have a parent or responsible adult stop by the Nurse’s Office on or before the last day of school to pick
up any medication(s). Students are only allowed to pick up emergency medications: inhalers, Glucagon,
and EpiPens.
The last day to pick up medication is Thursday, June 4. Office hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. All
remaining medication, including inhalers and emergency medications, will be discarded after that date.
If your child is to receive medication during the school day next year, please have his/her healthcare provider
complete and sign the CUSD 303 Medication Form. A parent signature is also required. The form is located on
the District 303 web site under “For Parents”. Click on Forms. On the Forms page click on Health Forms. The
policy and forms associated with taking medication at school are on the
right.
If your child has asthma and carries their inhaler with them, we like to have
an inhaler in our office in case they might forget to bring their inhaler or it
would run out. Please bring medication to school before the first attendance
day if possible. Call to arrange a time to drop off the medication and forms
to the Nurse’s Office any day after August 13.
Have a wonderful summer!

North Students Selected in Logo Challenge
Emmy Feddor and Julia Smith are part of Marketing & Advertising 2 this semester. The first project assigned to the class was
to develop a logo for a new business in St. Charles, Clean as a Whisker. Students were placed in pairs for the development of
the logo. Throughout the first week, students developed their ideas for this challenge. Ten logos from St. Charles North High
School were submitted along with 24 logos from the St. Charles East Marketing & Advertising 2 students. After the business
reviewed the logos, Emmy and Julia’s logo was selected to be used by the business.
Marketing & Advertising 2 is a course offered in St. Charles School District. Through this course, students are provided
multiple opportunities for real-world, hands-on projects. These projects are similar to what they would complete in a marketing
career. For more information about Marketing & Advertising 2, please contact Mrs. Kendra Lee ([email protected]).

North VEI Students Find Success at the First IL Trade Show
It has been an exciting year for our Virtual Enterprises
International (VEI) students. The St. Charles North VEI
firms attended the first Illinois Trade Show held at the
Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on February 20.
There were over 50 firms and 700 students in
attendance from Illinois and Michigan. Prior to the
event, students prepared competition materials,
developed a booth idea, and designed promotional
items. At the event, the students sold their virtual
products to the other VEI firms that were in attendance.
In addition, students competed in several competitions
that day including best booth, best sales presentation,
elevator pitch, speed interview, marketing plan, and
impact marketing. Competitions students submitted
prior to the trade show included: business card, print
advertisement, catalog, website design, and newsletter.
All three firms came home winners:
aWAKEN: 1st Place Impact Marketing;
2nd Place Newsletter
Skyline Entertainment: 1st Place Sales Presentation
Star City Sports: 3rd Place Print Ad
aWAKEn firm: (L to R) 1st Row – Hank Zimmer, Joey Rangel, Carter
Stibgen; 2nd Row – Mrs. Kendra Lee, Matt Walden, Jacelyn Maher, Liam
Flood, Danny Obemesser, Liam Smith; 3rd Row – Casey Walter, Tyler Skott.
The St. Charles North firms represented St. Charles well at this event.
VEI Dinner & Silent Auction
The Virtual Enterprises International Program (VEI) had another successful Dinner and
Silent Auction on Friday, March 6, at Eagle Brook Country Club. There were over 100
people in attendance to bid on the 40 baskets that were available. Thanks to the many
businesses and families that donated the baskets to the silent auction and the individuals
that bid and purchased the baskets, the students were able to raise over $5000. This
money will be used to cover expenses for the VEI students to attend a trade show in
San Diego, California, on April 9-12. At the trade show, students will sell their
virtual products to the other VEI firms that are in attendance. Through the trade
show experience, students will develop networking, leadership, and sales skills. In
addition, there are competition opportunities. We will find out the winning firms at the
trade show.
Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) is an in-school, live, global business simulation that offers students a
competitive edge through project-based, collaborative learning, and the development of 21st-century skills in
entrepreneurship, global business, problem solving, communication, personal finance and technology. This is
an international program with 30 firms in Illinois and over 3000 firms internationally. For more information
about VEI, please contact Mrs. Kendra Lee ([email protected]) or Mrs. Barbara Schmit

chapter in 13 out of 14 years the school has been open.
The other attendees, Brian Toman, Natasha Montavon, Jessica
Pannetierri, Matt Woolwine, Vanessa Jackson, and Jordan
Blonsky put forth their very best efforts but came up shy of
making the podium.
Each of these students is a wonderful representation of what a
North Star should be, and they should all be very proud of what
they accomplished.
DECA students qualify for national competition: (L to R) Abby
Wineinger, Ava Fiandaca, and Julia Smith
DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers
in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high
schools and colleges around the globe. DECA has 215,000

Feeding Our Hungry Neighbors
On a brisk and foggy March evening, 17 Key Club members and parents traveled to
Geneva, Illinois, to volunteer their time to help feed those less fortunate. Over the span of
two and a half hours, the Key Clubbers marked and packaged 7,300 pounds of food
products which is the equivalent of 6,083 meals at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The
food bank, feeding Illinois residents across 13 separate counties, assists nearly 71,000
people on a weekly basis. The Key Clubbers from St. Charles North added to that total
through a combination of teamwork, laughs, and classic rock music that cascaded through
the food bank.
This activity has been one of several volunteer events over the past several months that
the Key Clubbers have pursued to help their community. Some of these events include a
trip to Feed My Starving Children in Aurora, assisting with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree
toy event, and a Bowl-A-Thon in coordination with Kiwanis to raise money for the Spastic
Paralysis Research Foundation.
Following the recent trip to the food bank, Key Clubbers are looking to continue in their
aspiration to give back through several upcoming service opportunities around the St.
Charles area. These would include: a second trip to Feed My Starving Children and
helping at the Multiple Sclerosis Walk-a-thon.
Key Clubbers took a “helpie” while in the
midst of volunteering at Northern Illinois
Food Bank. Some members in the picture
include Tommy Summerwill, Aislen Kelly,
Taylor Sabo, Alex Sabo, Arreyelan
Salyards, Brittany Allen, Alex and Jacob
Kadolph, Matt MacArthur, advisor Kathy
Ralston, and Travis Buoy.

SCN PRESENTS SPRING MUSICAL - “THE DROWSY CHAPERONE”
The SCN Theatre & Music Department will present their Spring Musical The Drowsy Chaperone for four performances
Thursday-Saturday, April 23, 24, and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 26, at 2:00 p.m.
Winner of five Tony Awards (including Best Book and Best Original Score), The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up
of the Jazz Age musical featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another.
When a die-hard theatre fan plays his favorite cast album, the characters come to life in this hilarious musical farce.
With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The
recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a
bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not so bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, and a
chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.
Hailed by New York Magazine as "The Perfect Broadway Musical", The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes
that characterize the musical theatre genre.
North’s musical production, directed by Dale Morgan, has over 35 students cast in the show, and with all of the students working on tech and playing
music in the orchestra pit, there will be over 60 students participating in this fine event! Come stomp your feet to this Tony Award winning show.
Please come and experience what should be our finest production ever!
Tickets are $5 for students, $7 for adults, and $3 for senior citizens. Tickets are available at the box office 30 minutes before the show.
For further information email [email protected] or call (331) 228-6236.
BREAKFAST WITH THE STARS
The Breakfast with the Stars Program honors individual stars within our school community. Some of
the individuals nominated are out there for all of us to see and congratulate. Others are behind the
scenes or who, in their quiet way, demonstrate a level of excellence through service, academics,
competition, or simple kindness. Some of these students give of their special talents on a day-today basis in the classroom and some of them excel in our extra and co-curricular activities. Each
student is unique and special in the way they share and develop our school community.

make it into the "Top 8" in State. The defending state champs, SCN Mock Trial graduated six seniors last year, and this year's Varsity included only
two returners: Junior Kiersten Aalfs and sophomore Zach Furlin. However, the team is fortunate to have a deep program with a strong JV team, and
so they continued to compete at a high level throughout the season, including 1st Place in McLean and Lake Counties, 2nd Place in Cook County,
3rd Place in Kane County, and Top 8 at DuPage.
At the State Tournament, the team argued both sides of this year's case, People v. Casey Jones, a criminal case in which Casey Jones (portrayed
for the defense by sophomore Micky Maganini) was accused of home invasion and aggravated battery against his former girlfriend, Kelly Morgan,
(portrayed for the Prosecution by freshman Kayla Vine). After two rounds of competition, the team was awarded the distinction of "Top 8." In the
round, the Defense Team defeated perennial powerhouse, Timothy Christian, mostly because of their ability to listen carefully to the arguments
being made and the testimony being offered and then quickly respond and make changes to their own case. The judges were impressed with the
adaptability of the SCN Team, who ended up winning 2nd Place in the State Tournament.
This year's Varsity Team competing at State included: juniors Kiersten Aalfs, Jimmy Fleck, and Vince Valeriano; sophomores Zach Furlin, Micky
Maganini, Blake Yang, and Ryan Wolak; and freshman Kayla Vine. Individual honors went to Kiersten Aalfs and Jimmy Fleck, who were recognized
as Outstanding Attorneys, and Vince Valeriano and Ryan Wolak, who were recognized as Outstanding Witnesses. The team is coached by teachers
Mrs. VanDeSampel & Ms. Roberts, as well as by St. Charles alum Patrick Crimmins of Brady & Jensen. Follow the SCN Mock Trial Team on twitter:
