President’s Report ~ December ‘12 / January ‘13
I have just returned from the informative and always exciting internationally
well attended SCI Annual Convention just ended in Reno, Nevada.
Now it is time for our North Florida Chapter Annual Fundraiser and Banquet
on March 2, 2013, at the Morocco Shrine Auditorium on St. Johns Bluff Road. Your Board of Directors has been working diligently planning this event, and
now we need your support and involvement.
The annual Family Fun Shoot, Saturday, February 9th, will be at the Jacksonville
Gun Club for a day of activities for all ages and a wild game lunch. Earley Piety
will once again be offering free instruction. At the Family Fun Shoot we will
hold the fundraiser table sponsor early bird drawing for the winner’s choice of a
Ruger Mark II .22 caliber target pistol, stainless steel with scope rings, OR choose
a .45 caliber Glock Model 36 pistol subcompact with 2 magazines. To enter the
drawing you must buy your table for the fundraiser before the drawing. Sponsor
packets will be available for purchase at the Family Fun Shoot. Call Georgianne
Pionessa at 655-7471 for table sponsor ticket packets or information.
Our Christmas party at the Toney Sleiman residence and the January Oyster
roast and low country boil at Karen Tutwiler’s residence were both great events
with good fellowship with our members and guests. We thank our hosts for
inviting us into their homes to gather and talk about guns, hunting and Second
Amendment rights.
In preparation for our fundraiser we are looking for member donations to add
to our Silent Auction. Particularly spare hunting gear in great shape, high quality
Bird hunting in the casino in Reno
decorative items, fine art, services, rounds of golf, etc. We have some incredibly
great stuff for the silent auction and we are eager for you to see this year’s offerings. You can drop your donations off at
my office or we can arrange to have them picked up. Buy your tickets and tables now so you qualify for the early bird
drawing at the Family Fun Shoot at the Jacksonville gun club February 9. Don’t forget, there will be a second sponsor
drawing for a pistol at the fundraiser. If you buy now you will be eligible for both drawings.
The convention in Reno Nevada was a tremendous event, although attendance was down 25% from Las Vegas last
year. Even so, most of the outfitters, guides etc manning the booths said they had a good convention, selling many
hunts. The convention will return to Las Vegas next year.
Our chapter member and friend Charlie Goldenberg of Premier Safaris and Pierre Guerrini donated a Lord Derby eland
hunt valued at $53,000 to the live auction Saturday night and it went for almost twice that with the money going to
SCI foundation and Sables for their humanitarian, educational and conservation programs and missions!
The main messages at the breakfast, lunch and evening fundraisers and programs were gun control issues and anti
hunting issues. The antis have a 250 million dollar war chest to try and stop hunting in Africa. If we lose there, then
all that money will be directed at the U.S. and Canada to try to stop hunting here. This is not a battle to leave for our
children and grandchildren. It will be over in a few years if we do not beat them now. This is the time to do something. Now is the time to support Safari Club. We are the only organization doing anything in Africa to save hunting. The
Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the Wild Turkey Foundation and Ducks Unlimited are not in this battle, and while we
work closely with all pro hunting organizations they do not have the manpower or funds of SCI, to do what we are

Sables Foundation of Northeast Florida is accepting
applications to the American Wilderness Leadership
School (AWLS) The school offers 6 teacher sessions and
1 student session. Located in the beautiful BridgerTeton National Forest near Jackson Hole, WY, AWLS
provides the perfect atmosphere for the accredited
educational programs. Established in 1976 , AWLS has
provided a credited wildlife management program for a
total of 5,473 teachers and 1,338 students. Applications
can be found at www.safariclubfoundation.org. Please
turn them in to either Carol Blodgett or Patricia Vane
by the February membership meeting. For more

It’s that time again, we need volunteers to help with the Silent Auction setup on Friday

Jacksonville’s Dave Workman Jr. has just
rocked the world of big game angling.
In a recent three-day jaunt to the Pacific
Coast of Central America’s Guatemala,
Workman and his wife, Angela, caughtand-released a mind-numbing 182 Pacific
sailfish, plus a huge 450-pound blue
marlin.During the second day of that trip,
Workman personally caught-and-released
a staggering 91 sailfish. That’s right, 91
— which is believed to be a record for a
single angler in a single day of nonstop
sailfish action.

The Annual Family Fun Shoot is held for Safari Club member, their family and guests. It is a time to get together and enjoy a day of shooting,
relaxing and good food. There is no charge for food or soft drinks. We hope you will bring your children and grandchildren so they can
shoot in a controlled environment and learn about the safe handling of firearms. We are trying to encourage more women to become
involved in shooting sports, so bring your female family members as well. We will also have activities especially for children and, for

Government Action Committee Update

Obama and Feinstein Launch Major Attack on the
Second Amendment. Long-time enemy of the Second
Amendment, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), followed
through on her threats and on January 24, 2013, introduced
S-150, her latest attempt to subvert the Founding Fathers
and their recognition that some human rights are
unalienable and descend from God, not from government. This bill goes much further than the 1994 ban on “assault
weapons” and large capacity magazines. The term “assault
weapon” as defined in the 1994 statute was created by the
gun-grabbers to demonize certain semi-auto firearms with
two or more cosmetic features like pistol grips and barrel
shrouds. This new Feinstein bill states any semi-auto rifle,
pistol or shotgun with even one of the demonized cosmetic
features will be banned. The bill names 157 specific models
to be banned, including their sale or transfer, manufacture
or importation. The bill also bans all semi-auto rifles and
many pistols that can accept a detachable magazine or
that have a fixed magazine that can hold more than ten
rounds, bans semi-auto shotguns that can accept more
than five rounds, bans the sale or transfer of all ammunition
feeding devices that hold more than ten rounds (even if
lawfully owned at the time of passage of the bill), and bans
many cosmetic features, including pistol grip, folding stock,
threaded barrel or barrel shroud. This bill has no sunset and
would require a background check on the private transfer of
any legally-owned firearm grandfathered on the effective
date of the bill should it become law. The plan is to use
the “crisis” created by the school shooting to do as much
damage to the Second Amendment as possible before the
hysteria dissipates. This bill constitutes a major threat to
our gun rights and must be defeated in its entirety, without
compromise. Obama has also issued twenty-three “Gun
Violence Reduction Executive Actions” most of which are
ineffectual but which together have sinister implications
for the future of our Republic.
Remind Our Legislators of the Results of the 1994
Elections. After passage of the 1994 gun ban there were 35
incumbent Democrats in Congress defeated for re-election
in November, 1994. Another failed to win his primary. Support SCI, NRA and other gun-rights organizations in
fighting this attack. It may be that even Obama recognizes
that broad support for his efforts to destroy the Second
Amendment will be elusive. He passed the ball to a
commission headed by Joe Biden, which may result in the
issue being sufficiently bungled that legislative enthusiasm
for it will not be sustainable. Fast and Furious Disappears from Public View. The BATFE
remains leaderless and Obama has so far failed to submit
a candidate for director to the Senate for confirmation
during his entire time in office. Illinois Prohibition of Concealed Carry for any Reason
Struck Down by Court. The Seventh Circuit Court of
Appeals on December 11, 2012, struck down the Illinois
statute prohibiting concealed carry outside the home
as unconstitutional. The court in a three to two decision
concluded the right to self defense could not rationally
have been limited to inside the home. While the outcome
was correct, it is disturbing that the decision was so close,
emphasizing once again the importance for good or ill of
lifetime presidential appointments to the federal judiciary. The Administration’s War on Hunters Continues at the
USF&WS. John H. Jackson, III, of Conservation Force, stated
in his December, 2012, year-end review: “It is no longer a
secret that Americans are the worst treated hunters in the
world today. The USF&WS is not the Service it is represented
or perceived to be. It is a regulatory agency with an attitude. The ambiguous regulations are growing in number and
complexity. Worse, they are confusing if not unintelligible.” Technical violations and harmless correctible clerical errors
are used as excuses for seizure and forfeiture. The Service is
doing what it can to make trouble for international hunting
and trophy importation.
The USF&WS Loosens its Procedures for Listing Under
the Endangered Species Act. As a result of a legal
settlement with animal rights and environmental antihunting groups (the Center for Biological Diversity and
WildEarth Guardians), the USF&WS has made it more
difficult for SCI and others to oppose un-scientific listings
as threatened or endangered of certain animals, including
game birds such as the greater sage grouse and the lesser
prairie chicken, as well as the New England cottontail. These
listings can create severe limitations on the use of habitat
and can effectively remove a species or habitat from state
management and hunting. SCI had attempted to intervene
in the case but the D.C. Court of Appeals on January 4, 2013,
sustained a lower court ruling denying SCI intervention.
Semi-autos and Ammunition continue to fly off the
shelves at retailers and gun shows. This Obama created

doing. We raised over $170,000 at the Board of Directors
meeting for the Zambian lion initiative after the Minister
of Tourism spoke to us about her plans to help SCI and
re-open the Lion hunting there. As President of our
local chapter I got to vote as a member of the Board of
Directors. Saturday night at the final auction before Dick
Cheney spoke, SCI raised over 1 million dollars in about
15 minutes or less, then and there, to also help with the
Zambian lion initiative. That is a lot of dough but nothing
compared to the 250 million the anti’s have. We have
found out that anti hunters are paying any politician
who will vote to ban hunting $50,000 USD if they help
the anti hunters, so we are fighting that corruption as
well in Africa.
This is it, people, our enemies hate us. We must fight
now or it will be too late. SCI is the only Pro hunting
organization with a horse in this race so as President of
our local SCI chapter I urge you to attend our fundraiser
and support the cause dear to us all. Be a table sponsor,
buy raffle tickets (included with some table packages)
and bid on the auction items.
Our chapter accounts are monitored by a CPA, and as
your President I pledge to you that all monies earned
will be used to the highest and best possible use to
fight the anti’s, to support National SCI, and to educate
and train local youth about guns, hunting and Second
Amendment rights. Bring a friend to the fundraiser and let us speak the
truth to them about what is really going on. We can’t
just let the talking heads on TV play music and flashing
lights and brainwash them and the next generation and
confuse them with B.S. issues that are covering up the
real problems in America. This is it hunters, our enemies
hate us and we must fight now. I pray for America and I
pray that you will help us continue the fine tradition of
the North Florida Chapter of SCI that was founded over
30 years ago. God bless you and yours and these United States of
America!
