North Glenora News North Glenora Community League May 2015 Proposed entrance signs for North Glenora These five sign designs have been proposed for North Glenora, and we would welcome your input. Please send feedback to ngcl.ppres@gmail. com, or drop a note in the Community League mailbox for the Past President by Friday, May 15. Which option do you prefer? What do you/don’t you like? We don’t know exactly where these signs will be placed, but the three triangles near the entrances to the community are likely options. There may be other locations as well. If there is a clear favourite, the Community League will proceed with that sign design. If there are some other interesting suggestions or changes, we’ll put it to a vote. Page 3 Window & Balcony Safety With the return of warmer weather, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) would like to remind parents & caregivers, of an often overlooked hazard in the home – open windows. Every year, paramedics respond to emergencies where a child has fallen from an open window – often from the second floor. Falls such as these are preventable by taking time to assess your home and ensuring windows are safe. Windows and screens • • • • • • • Further prevention tips Move furniture such as cribs, beds, stools, and change tables away from windows to prevent access to them; Keep drapery cords out of childrens’ reach. Wrap excess cord around cleats, or tie-downs to avoid a choking hazard; Remember: screens are designed to keep bugs out, NOT to keep children in. • • • • Balconies Do not underestimate a child’s ability to climb. Furniture and other items stored on balconies and decks can be used to climb resulting in falls over the railing; Consider installing a balcony guard to eliminate access between the vertical bars of a balcony, or deck. Children aged one to four are at highest risk of falling from a window or balcony; Direct supervision of children is the single most effective way to prevent falls from windows and balconies; Consider installing safety devices which limit the distance in which a window be can open; Ensure the safety device can be released quickly, so the window can be used for escape in case of fire, or other emergency. To read detailed accounts of the community engagement with the developers, visit northglenora.org/development/. Here are some recent updates: Stan Daniels Centre and Metis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC) In December of 2014 the Holmes Group announced that they were no longer involved in the project, at the request of MCHC. The MCHC confirmed to NGCL that, pending the announcement of a new MCHC CEO (at this point still pending), that the development would be on hold. MCHC has committed to monitoring and maintaining the Stan Daniels building while the project is on hold. NGCL has communicated to MCHC that it is our expectation that the Community Engagement process that had been set in place in 2014 would continue once the new CEO was in place. Westmount Presbyterian Church Development Intermet Housing is in the process of compiling and responding to the most recent round of community feedback on their proposed development. This should be complete by end of April, and will be submitted to the City of Edmonton along with their application for rezoning of the property. The submission package, including updated elevations, and how they have responded to community concerns through the presubmission period will be included. They will ensure that the submission package is sent to the Community League. Intermet has committed to at least one more community meeting to review community feedback and how they have responded to in in their rezoning application. Finding a home for backyard fruit Walking around our 60-year-old neighbourhood, we recognized that a lot of good fruit was falling to the ground and being wasted. We decided to collect fruit such as rhubarb, raspberries, cherries, pears and apples that were not being used by homeowners. 1. Tell your neighbours about the fruit and invite them to come and pick. You can arrange with them to leave you a portion in return for your sharing. We are a not-for-profit society with the mission of connecting this wonderful local resource with those who will use it. 2. Call us at 780-244-0129 and we will let you know about coming to pick ourselves. Please note that apples are so abundant that we often cannot pick – but if you drop them off at our kitchen we will make sure they go to someone who will use them. We make jams, jellies, sauces and condiments that are 60 to 100% “rescued” fruit; we teach preserving courses so people can make their own; we connect homes with excess fruit to those who want to pick for themselves; and fruit that is excess to the above sources goes to local charities, group homes, community kitchens, small food banks and anyone else who will use it (at no charge). In 2014, we redirected about 15,000 kg apples and this is just a small portion of the apple trees in our city. If you have fruit in your yard that is excess to your needs, or you are unable to do the work yourself, here are a few options to consider. North Glenora Community League - ngcl.org 3. If you don’t want others in your yard give us a call. We will tell you where and when you can drop off the fruit or we can arrange for a pick up. Call us at 780-244-0129 if you want to be a volunteer picker, know of a place that would use some of this free local fruit, or have other questions or comments. There is a lot more to our story, so please check out the website at www.fruitsofsherbrooke.ca. Why not nominate the address for Front Yards in Bloom as recognition of their contribution to the community? 2015 marks the historic 75th Anniversary of Glenora Elementary and the school is celebrating in a big way! TM Front Yards in Bloom is sponsored by the Edmonton Horticultural Society, Canadian Union of Postal Workers and the City of Edmonton. Yellow signs posted on fabulous front gardens in North Glenora and throughout Edmonton. Normally 3,500 nominations are received from all over Edmonton and it would be nice to have a number come from our community. Last year there were approximately 25 nominations from our community. To nominate a North Glenora front yard before June 26, simply email the street address of the location you are recommending to: [email protected] or online at www.frontyardsinbloom.ca. Top gardens, including the Edible Landscape category, are announced at North Glenora’s community day in September. Judging of the front yards and posting signs will take place in the first two weeks of July. An exciting summer opportunity for a student who has a passion for recreation, love working with the public, and wants to make a real difference for young Edmontonians in the Grovenor and North Glenora communities. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews shortly afterwards. Background on this Position: Many families rely on the Green Shack program for their children during the summer months. This year, the program has been scaled back and is only offered half-days in fewer communities. As a way to address this, two community leagues (North Glenora and Grovenor) and two churches (St. Paul’s Anglican and Westmount Presbyterian) have agreed to work together provide supplemental programming. A summer student will be hired to lead and organize activities similar to the Green Shack program for the mornings in North Glenora and the afternoons in Grovenor. In addition, volunteers from the 4 partners will be invited to help organize games, crafts and activities during the summer months. The summer student will work with these volunteers to organize fun-filled summer activities for children and youth.
