A MESSAGE FROM NORTHLANDS PARK RACETRACK & CASINO
As I pen this year’s “welcome message” it’s -18 degrees and snowing – you better believe the entire
Northlands team is looking forward to the return of thoroughbred racing!
From our family to yours, Welcome Back! Team Northlands has been busy in the off-season planning for
another dynamic meet; the details of which can be found in the brochure you’re holding right now. We
hope you’ll find our Racing Guide a handy reference tool over the next eight months – but should you
ever have any questions, feel free to contact Jason, Matt or Shep in the Race Office.
Off the heels of a tremendously successful meet in 2014, there’s a lot to look forward to in the year
ahead. We trust you’ll enjoy some of the improvements we’ve made in the off season. Our Track &
Barns Monitoring Group, made up of horsepeople and racetrack staff, identified several priority projects
last fall that we’ve been able to address. You’ll notice major changes to the chute at the top of the
stretch, an overhauled exterior fenceline near the on-gap and improvements to the paddock viewing
area. Beginning immediately following this year’s meet, we’ll begin a two-year roof repair project that
will eventually see the Long Barn & Winter Barn roofs replaced.
Perhaps the best news of all is that Century Downs, Calgary’s new racing facility, is scheduled to open in
early April – a development that will improve the fortunes of all that breed and race in Alberta.
The onset of any race meet is an optimistic time and we look forward to it as much as you do. Please do
all you can to help us put on a great show. Best wishes on a safe and prosperous season.
Chris Roberts
General Manager, Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino
A MESSAGE FROM THE HBPA
Once again The HBPA of Alberta welcomes back its existing and new members as well as backstretch
personnel to the upcoming 2015 Northlands thoroughbred meet.
With the continued lack of racing and the associated gaming revenues in the Calgary market, 2014 was
indeed another challenging year for our horsepeople – exacerbated by unfortunate cuts to the purse
funding provided by HRA. Because of prudent decision-making, we were able to hold the line on purse
levels and, as always, our owners and breeders supplied sufficient horses to ensure an excellent meet
It is now time to move onward and upward since all indications are that the Century Downs Racing
Entertainment Center will be operational by early April. The expectation is that Century Downs will
contribute positively to the funds available for future purse distribution. In the meantime, the addition
of four live days to the 2015 calendar will result in purse payments remaining status quo this year.
Should slot and wagering performance at Century Downs exceed expectations, additional funds will be
available to the industry.
Currently the HBPA Board of Directors are discussing incentives to ensure greater participation in our
Stakes Program and attract additional horses to this jurisdiction. Program changes will be reported to
the membership via our website.
Please ensure that horses are race ready at the start of the meet since 3-1/2 furlong races will not
appear in the condition book. It’s important that we do our part to present wagering guests with the
best product possible throughout the season. Northlands continues to make strides in marketing
and promoting our product to our customers and fans which has resulted in increased attendance
and wagering. Insurance and other benefit programs for backstretch workers are administered by
Theresa Sealy who resides at our Northlands office located in the backstretch Control Office. Contact
information for our Directors, management, and field offices is located on our website at www.
hbpaalberta.ca. We wish you the best of racing luck in 2015.

Executive Director, HBPA of Alberta

events each year.
The Edmonton EXPO Centre measures 522,000 square feet and is the second largest venue of its kind

has delivered the best in horse racing to Edmonton fans since 1882. Additionally, Northlands is home

NORTHLANDS PARK RACETRACK & CASINO HISTORY
Edmonton’s first races were run in 1882 on a beaten track that would be sitting in the downtown core
if it were still around today. In 1900, the track was moved from its home in the storied Rossdale Flats to
Northlands Park Ractrack & Casino where racing has continued for 115 years.
The Edmonton Exhibition Association took managerial control of the track’s racing activities in 1957.
With the completion of a new grandstand and racing surface in 1951, and construction of a new
racetrack in Winnipeg, the jewel of Western Canada racing, the Canadian Derby, was relocated to
Edmonton. The track surface was extended 17 years later to 5/8 of a mile — and the Derby’s home was
permanently solidified.
The 2014 Canadian Derby presented by CIBC was the 85th running and was captured by Edison —
owned by Bob Butz, Fouad El Kardy & Rick Running Rabbit, trained by Robertino Diodoro and ridden to
victory by Rico Walcott.
Some other facts about the track at Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino:
• 5/8 mile racetrack, composed of sand and clay
• Stretch length is 527 feet
• Most common distances are: 6 furlongs, 6.5 furlongs, 1 mile, 1-1/16 miles
• Overnight money: $85,000 per day
• Jockey mount: $60
• Lasix administration: $50 + GST
• Horse Tattoos: $80
• Participation fee of $120 paid to each horse finishing sixth or worse in all races

PREFERENCE DATE SYSTEM
1. No horse will be eligible to receive an entry date in any race unless the registration papers are on
file with the racing secretary at the time of the draw.
2. Horses entered which do not get an opportunity to run will receive an entry date corresponding to
the date on which they are entered.
3. Running dates will be carried for the racing season. Entry dates will be carried for 30 calendar days.
4. Horses that run will receive a running date corresponding to the date that they run, and lose the
date previously held.
5. In all cases the oldest date will take preference. When an entry date and a running date are the
same, the entry date has preference. Entry dates are only good when entering back for the same
claiming price and conditions.
6. Horses named in the body of the race that scratch must re-enter to establish a date unless
otherwise specified by the stewards. This also applies to horses provided an opportunity to start,
except when scratched from “paddock to post” and such scratch was caused entirely by the actions
of another horse.
7. Scratched today horses entering back the same day will not receive an entry date.
8. Horses that leave the grounds to race elsewhere must re-enter to re-establish a preference date.
9. The trainer, owner(s) or authorized agent is responsible for the preference date of the horse(s) in
his/her control. Any claim of error must be made before the specified horse is entered, otherwise
such claim will not be recognized.
10. A change of ownership or trainer of a horse shall not affect the preference date of such a horse.
11. When entering a sweepstakes the preference date system shall not be considered.
12. All horses entered at minor race meetings in Alberta must have registration papers accompany
the horse and be on file at the minor meeting. Photocopies of registration papers are no longer
acceptable. Horses racing at minor meetings will not retain their preference dates in Edmonton.
13. Any other incident not specifically covered by this directive, or any other matter involving the
above, will be determined by the stewards.
The purse for the Canadian Derby in 1941 was $2,000. This year, the
purse for the 86th running of the Canadian Derby is $200,000.

STAKES RACES – TABLE RESERVATIONS FOR OWNERS/GUESTS
Northlands values its relationships with Stakes Race owners and makes every effort to ensure that tables
in Colours Restaurant are available to them.
Following the draw for every stakes race, the Race Office should be contacted by trainers or owners
to inquire about reservation needs. A block of tables are held for stakes race connections until 24
hours after the draw. Colours Restaurant is regularly over-subscribed, so unfortunately Northlands Park
Racetrack & Casino cannot hold the tables until the day of the race. Any tables from the stakes block
not reserved 24 hours after the draw are filled by wait-listed guests.
Stakes owners wishing to book tables directly should contact the Race Office at 780.471.7370.
THE CASINO
Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino offers over 550 Vegas Style slot machines, seven VLTs, five minute

nickel, quarter and dollar denominations.
Join the Northlands Park Players Club, the only casino rewards program to offer cash back rewards
every day, plus many more benefits, discounts and special events available to members only! Sign up

EDMONTON’S SUMMER FAIR – K-DAYS
Each summer in late July, the Northlands campus explodes with the activity of K-Days. The fair brings
roughly 700,000 Edmontonians through the gates over a 10-day period. Chuckwagon racing will not be
part of the program in 2015, so no change to the track surface will be required.
In 2015, K-Days runs from July 17 – 26. Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino features live racing on five of
the fair’s ten days. On each night of the fair, a six-minute fireworks display is launched from the infield.
The fireworks show is extremely loud and may cause excitement to highly-strung horses. Northlands
Park Racetrack & Casino strongly encourages trainers to relocate such horses off the backstretch during
the 10-day fair. Northlands staff patrol the backstretch during the fireworks displays for safety and
security purposes.
During the fair, there is a fee for parking on the Northlands property. Horsemen should contact the Race
Office to arrange for parking passes during the fair. Horsemen not arranging for passes in advance may
be subject to a parking fee. Admission to Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino remains free during the
fair, however admission charges do apply for access to the midway, concert venues and exhibition areas.

CANADIAN DERBY PRESENTED BY CIBC
The 86th running of Western Canada’s premiere thoroughbred stakes race, the Grade III Canadian
Derby, will be held on Saturday, August 15. The Canadian Derby was first contested in 1930 at Polo Park
Racetrack in Winnipeg, Manitoba but was moved to Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino in 1957. In
2014, Edison won in dominating fashion with Rico Walcott aboard for trainer Robertino Diodoro.
In 2015, the one-mile and three-eighths classic with a purse of $200,000 highlights a fantastic day
of racing featuring four stakes races and purses exceeding $400,000. The race will be the exciting
culmination of Canadian Derby Festival Week, which attracts widespread attention throughout
Edmonton. The Canadian Derby is annually televised on CTV.
ALBERTA BREEDERS’ FALL CLASSIC
Annually a celebration of the Alberta breeding and racing program, the 19th renewal of the Alberta
Breeders’ Fall Classic will be held on September 19. ABFC features seven Alberta-bred stakes races,
running for combined purses of $350,000. The program is a joint initiative of the Canadian Thoroughbred
Horse Society, the HBPA of Alberta, Horse Racing Alberta and Northlands Park Racetrack & Casino.

In addition, this year’s Canadian Derby presented by CIBC and Alberta Breeders’ Fall Classic will feature
exciting new programming and initiatives. From expanded seating areas at the Derby to local initiatives

MOVE-OUT DATE
The Thoroughbred meet concludes on October 24, 2015. Horsemen are asked to remove all horses and
equipment from the Northlands property by Wednesday, October 28 at noon.
STAKES RACE DISTRIBUTIONS
There is a need to increase the field sizes in most Stake races (especially the 3 & 4 yo Sales Stakes). In
order to attract additional entries and increase wagering opportunities, the Committee recommends
that participants in all 2015 Stake races (except the Canadian Derby) finishing worse than 5th will
have all nomination, entry and starting fees re-paid back. Funding would come from the first five (5)
finishers in the race. Nomination fees for $50,000 Stakes are $1,000 and $1,500 for $75,000 stakes. The
distribution for Stake races for the first five (5) finishers will revert to previous years so that the entire
advertised amount is paid out – i.e. 60/20/10/6/4%. The replaces the $120 participation fee paid during
the last two (2) years. See the Table denoted below indicating the Purse Distribution where there are 6 10 Starters in a Stake race. It was further noted that for 2015 a number of incentives to attract additional
horses and owners are being implemented in various other jurisdictions.
