North Tyneside NASUWT member Rachel, who has experienced first-hand the fantastic work of the Maggie's Centre at the Freeman hospital, can be seen handing over the cheque. At the North Tyneside NASUWT and NUT Annual Quiz members managed to raise a further £207. This has been added to the Preston Grange Primary School fundraising efforts for the Maggie's Centre. You, too, can add to this donation by going to www.justgiving.com/prestongrange. Every year over 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK, facing tough questions, exhausting treatment and difficult emotions. These challenges affect not only those with cancer, but their families and friends too. Maggie's provide free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. This follows the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jenks. She lived with advanced cancer for two years and believed people should not lose their joy of living for their fear of dying. The first Maggie's centre opened in 1996 since then, Maggie's has continued to grow with 17 centres in the UK including that attended by patients at The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. Further fund raising efforts will take place during the Annual NASUWT/NUT Summer Event. Look out for details. If any member or school would like NASUWT North Tyneside to support their fundraising efforts during 2015-16 contact Phil Kemp to discuss further. Sorry, your membership has expired...... These are the unfortunate words we have had to say to a couple of our former members recently. They had allowed their membership to lapse by either changing bank or stopping their direct debits in error. It is your responsibility to ensure you are paying your subscriptions and you can pay monthly, quarterly or annually. Imagine desperately needing urgent support and you can’t get it? If you aren’t paying your subscriptions, we can’t help you if you need NASUWT support, so don’t get caught out – you could be in danger of losing your job if we can’t support you when you need it. A quick call to Regional Office can get your membership re-instated 0191 5195300. Have you changed school, moved house or changed your name? If any of these apply to you, let us know so we can update your details. If our records aren’t up-todate you may not appear on our membership lists – really important for you if you need NASUWT support. Contact Phil, Keith or Jodie if your records need updating. I’m on UPS, should I get a TLR, too? Are you being expected to do a TLR role to get your UPS payment? Some members are reporting that they are being expected to take on roles which should attract a TLR as they are being told it is expected because they are on UPS. UPS was introduced to reward great teachers who wished to stay teaching, in the classroom. It is not to get you to do management roles on the cheap. School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) is explicit that UPS includes ‘wider contribution to the school’ but also that this ‘wider contribution’ should be defined in your Pay Policy. It is. Your Pay Policy Appendix F reads as follows: P1. Contribute significantly, where appropriate, to implementing workplace policies and practice and to promoting collective responsibility for their implementation P9. Promote collaboration and work effectively as a team member. P10. Contribute to the professional development of colleagues through coaching and mentoring, demonstrating effective practice, and providing advice and feedback. Nowhere does your Pay Policy expect you to do management work without being paid a TLR. Some roles, such as SENCO have to be paid extra to comply with the STPCD – this is not an option it is statutory. If you need to discuss this, please contact us. NASUWT North Tyneside says a fond farewell to Alison Broady During January's AGM NASUWT North Tyneside said a huge thank you to its longeststanding activist - Alison Broady (Beacon Hill).
