Why Scams Work and How Investigators Can Assist – What happens when the phone rings or you get that piece of mail telling you, you’ve won the lottery, a prize or it’s the IRS and you must send money. In this workshop you will learn why these scam artists are so persuasive and convince individuals to send them money; and why these scams work and how the postal service can help intervene and investigate these potential crimes. Presenters: Susan Grant, Consumer Federation of America, Washington, DC; and Brendon Murphy, Investigator, U.S. Postal Inspector, Hartford, CT C. Financial Exploitation Crimes: How are They Investigated – As millions of Americans turn 60 each year, financial crimes increase dramatically. These crimes often times go unreported or unnoticed for months or even years. In this workshop you will learn about the challenges of investigating and prosecuting these types of cases, as well as, the impact on the victims and their families.
