Conference Workshop Schedule
Session I
10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
A. Best Practices in Choosing In-Home Care – Caring for our loved ones at home can be difficult.
When it is time to choose someone outside of the family to care for our loved ones, we can be overwhelmed by the amount of time and energy it takes. Acting hastily can result in serious consequences for
your loved one and your family. Having a trusted team in the home will put your mind at ease and will result in better care for your loved one. In this workshop you will hear from those on the front line of in-home
care and learn the best way to choose a trusted in-home caregiver for your loved one. Presenters: Kathy
Bowler, Assistant Director Massachusetts Counseling on Aging; Maura Plante, Social Services
Coordinator, Amherst Council on Aging; and Fran O’Connell, Owner, O’Connell Care At Home
B. Why Scams Work and How Investigators Can Assist – What happens when the phone rings or
you get that piece of mail telling you, you’ve won the lottery, a prize or it’s the IRS and you must send
money. In this workshop you will learn why these scam artists are so persuasive and convince individuals
to send them money; and why these scams work and how the postal service can help intervene and investigate these potential crimes. Presenters: Susan Grant, Consumer Federation of America, Washington, DC; and Brendon Murphy, Investigator, U.S. Postal Inspector, Hartford, CT
C. Financial Exploitation Crimes: How are They Investigated – As millions of Americans turn 60
each year, financial crimes increase dramatically. These crimes often times go unreported or unnoticed for
months or even years. In this workshop you will learn about the challenges of investigating and prosecuting these types of cases, as well as, the impact on the victims and their families. Presenters: Assistant
District Attorney Jayme Parent, Chief, Elders and Persons with Disabilities Unit, Northwestern District Attorney’s Office; and Josephine Sarnelli, Certified Forensic Accountant, Springfield, MA
Please note, this year the three conference sessions are repeated in Session II.
Session II
11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
