Our Year 11 students continue to
inspire me on a daily basis with the
commitment they are showing to
their studies. They achieved some
fantastic GCSE English results
earlier in the term and recent results from the fortnightly
‗Mathematics Mocks‘ are most encouraging. I would like to
thank Miss Culling for the excellent work she has done in
compiling a comprehensive revision guide for every student
to use over the Easter holidays that details exactly what
revision needs to be done over the holidays for every subject.
Finally, I would like to thank all the staff who are giving up
part of their Easter Holidays to facilitate the ‗Easter Revision
Conference‘ which is running everyday between 30th March
and 2nd April 2015.
Whilst the attainment of students in their GCSE exams is
crucial, it is not good enough for students to just work hard
in Year 11. Performance matters for all students, in all year
groups, in every subject. Next term, all students in Years 7, 8
and 9 will be formally assessed, and they will be reset on the
basis of the ranked order results which will be displayed in
the atrium. I am looking for a commitment from every
student to perform to the very best of their ability in every
assessment. We are embedding a ‗performance culture‘ at
Nova Hreod Academy, a culture of ‗winning‘ where success
is publicly shared and celebrated, a culture where we
encourage the very best from everyone on every occasion.
Outside of the classroom, Nova Hreod students continue to
achieve in many amazing and varied ways! Our Year 10
students are pursuing the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award
and we are exceptionally proud of Chloe for winning the
Swindon Advertiser Young Sportswoman of the Year Award.
Three of our Year 9 students won United Learning‘s App
Design competition and I am very proud of the way that our
students wholeheartedly engaged with the ZeeTee campaign
against the use of homophobic language, something which
is completely unacceptable in a plural society such as ours.
Please do read on for more exciting stories of life at Nova
Hreod Academy.
Please note that from September 2015, all students will be
expected to wear the new uniform of blazer, shirt, tie,
trousers/skirt and shoes. Full details are contained inside this
newsletter.
Finally, I would like to thank all students and parents/carers
for their full support of the school‘s High Achievement –
High Standards agenda. This underpins all that we do and is
central to helping us bring out The Best in Everyone. I wish
everyone a very happy and restful Easter holiday and look
forward to welcoming the students back to school on
Tuesday 14th April at 08:30 for what I am sure will be
another highly successful term.

As part of National Careers Week, Mrs
Loach took a group of Year 11 students
to a ‗University and Employers
Convention‘ at Cirencester College on
3rd March. The students found this to
be very useful and came back with
arms full of university prospectuses. In
school, all students had the opportunity
to learn about many different career options by viewing a
selection of job profiles in tutor time through video links supplied
on the National Careers Week website.
Year 11 students have been very diligent in attending enrichments,
keeping their attendance above 95% and avoiding detentions by
ensuring their vital homework is being completed and submitted on
time. Those that have achieved all these targets will qualify for a free
ticket to the Year 11 Prom on Friday 10th July.
We are just about ready to tally up which students have met all the
criteria and the names will be revealed during assembly on the last
day of term.
The majority of our Year 11 students have now made their post
16 choices; with a few now waiting to hear back from their
apprenticeship applications. All students are now aware of the
grades they need in order to continue on their chosen career path.
As our Year 10 students will be making decisions about their post
16 options at the end of the year, we invited Cirencester College,
New College and Swindon College to the their parents evening on
5th March and students were also signposted to relevant careers
websites.

Cambridge University Challenge Day

Some of our highest achieving Year 10‘s enjoyed a highly
inspirational Challenge Day at Emmanuel College, part of
Cambridge University.
The visit started with an introduction to higher education; including
student life, living in Cambridge, teaching at university, careers and
finance.
After a tour of Emmanuel College and the facilities available on campus,
students took part in a debating challenge with other schools and were
very proud when Nova students won both of their debates!
The day finished with two sessions delivered by Cambridge academics,
which were a superb example of the excellent standard of teaching
delivered at this prestigious university.

In our continued drive to forge links with top universities, we recently welcomed a visit from Katie Vernon, Cambridge University‘s
School‘s Liaison Officer.
Having previously studied at Cambridge for her degree, Katie‘s knowledge of the admissions and financial support processes alongside
the typical daily life of the students was exceptional. Katie presented two information sessions to groups of Year 10 and 11 students
with the aim of making the admissions process clear and raising aspirations. Our students then had the chance to ask questions and
some took the opportunity to speak to Katie separately once the sessions had finished.

Business Accumulator Challenge

Year 10 Business Studies students set up and ran their own businesses as part of the £50 Accumulator Challenge. The aim
was to make as much profit as possible from an original £50 investment.
The students sold cakes, held a
crossbar challenge and a raffle
and sold rapeseed oil as part of
the competition.

who made a profit of £128.24.
Overall, a total of £442.75
was raised for charity.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
22 students in Year 10 are busy completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
A wide range of different activities are being completed for their volunteering, physical and skill sections including cooking, sports,
learning a musical instrument, looking after animals, caring for the elderly, running, swimming and rock climbing. The students are also
training for the expedition which requires students to navigate by themselves, prepare their own food and assemble their own tents.
The group are very proactive and well organised and have been working extremely hard. They are due to complete their award in July
when they take their final expedition.
Outstanding Award for Chloe
We were exceptionally proud earlier this term when Year
10‘s Chloe Crippen was awarded the Swindon Advertiser
Young Sportswoman of the Year Award.
Chloe has won the Swindon Schools event every year
since Year 7 and represented the Swindon Schools team
in the Wiltshire Cross Country Championships earlier this
month.
Chloe‘s recent achievements include 1st place in the
Swindon Schools‘ Cross Country and 7th place in the
Wiltshire Schools‘ Cross Country. She competed in the
South West Schools‘ Cross Country Championships in
February and the National Championships in March.
Everyone at Nova is very proud of Chloe for
accomplishing this excellent award and we wish her all
the best for her upcoming competitions. Chloe‘s family
has asked us

From education to career

Students in Year 9 and 10 were lucky enough to have a special assembly on 9 th February from
former student Luke Waldron.
Luke left Nova Hreod five years ago and kindly came into school to demonstrate to our students
that working hard at school and grabbing opportunities for life experiences can lead to success.
Luke is currently on a work placement year at GE Aeronautics, while studying Motorsport
Engineering at Brunel University.
Luke told us about his journey since leaving school and explained to the students how he takes
every opportunity to gain valuable workability skills, such as organising white water rafting for
interns, mentoring A Level students as a STEM Ambassador and taking part in the Welsh Three
Peaks challenge.

was to work out what direction they
want to go in and take as many opportunities as they can to get

Zero Tolerance to Homophobic Bullying
Shelley Frost and members of local LGBT youth group Out of the
Can delivered an eye-opening assembly to students in Year 8, 9
and 10 to promote the ZeeTee Campaign, and highlight the
dangers of using homophobic language to cause offence or upset
people.
Remi was one of the students who appeared on the pitch before
the kick-off, proudly wearing the new Nova Hreod rugby shirt
which was designed by a group students at a workshop and
sponsored by Canterbury, the official sportswear supplier for the
Rugby World Cup. The workshop was held at Wheatley RFC
where our students enjoyed an interactive session on the history
of the rugby shirt and the practicalities of design, before being
given free rein to create a shirt for their school team.

Our ZeeTee campaigners (most of whom are our Anti-Bullying
Ambassadors) have been encouraging students to pledge to make
a difference; to stop using homophobic language and try to
encourage others to do the same. Look out for students with the
RED ZT badge and ask about the pledge if you haven‘t already
signed!

Cambridge University
Year 9 students win National App competition t
Shaina Akthar, Charlotte King and Aimee Robinson won the final of #UnitedApp2015 – an entrepreneurial app-design
competition between 700 young people from United Learning schools across the country.
The team beat 180 teams from across the country with their idea for an app that helps parents to help their children with school work.
United Learning partnered with ideas company 7billionideas and was sponsored by Xero to create the contest, which promotes
entrepreneurial spirit, innovation and team work whilst introducing students to the world of coding.
On 9th February the girls met with a team from United Learning to start planning the building of their App. After learning all about the
process of developing their design, they made key decisions on how they want the app to operate, what constraints they need to consider
and they planned a storyboard of the App. The aim is to get the App into the App Store by August.
Our Choir performs at Wembley Arena
On Wednesday 11th March 2015 the Nova Hreod choir journeyed down the M4 motorway to Wembley SSE Arena to take part in Voice in a
Million with 6,500 pupils from other schools
all over the country, forming one of the largest, if not the biggest, children‘s choir in the
world.
The 17 pupils that make up the Choir have
shown great dedication and commitment
over the last couple of months, attending
rehearsals 3 lunchtimes each week as well as
working independently at home with a rehearsal CD. It was definitely worthwhile as
their input certainly helped to raise the roof
of the SSE Arena.

Year 8
Year 8 football tournament

We have been running a 5-a-side football
competition for Year 8 students since
November last year. Year 8 tutor groups were
asked to make up a team of five, appoint a
Captain and select a name for their team which
resulted in the formation of seven teams,
including an all-girl team who were willing to
take on the boys. Fixtures were organised so
that each team played all the others in a
―round robin‖ format.
21 games were played on Fridays from
November to February. All the games were
played in a very sporting manner and with a
competitive edge. Some 50 students were
involved.
The final, which was played on Friday 27th February, was between the top 2 teams in the league. The winning team were Lemon FC who
received an engraved trophy which will be contested for next year.
Well done to all the students whose participation made this tournament a pleasure to referee.
Chelsea‘s Choice
Chelsea‘s Choice is the story of three students who
find the diary of a young girl called Chelsea. Having
fallen out with her friends and family, Chelsea was
befriended by an older man, Gary. He owned a car,
had a flat and treated her like an adult - unfortunately
he was not what he seemed.
The powerful production was performed by the Alter
Ego Theatre Company to an audience of Year 8
students and focused on understanding what
happened to Chelsea and how it could have been
prevented.
After the performance, the actors discussed with our
students the realities of sexual exploitation, internet
safety, and what healthy relationships look like.
Students were also advised how to get help and
support if they ever feel like they are in an unhealthy
relationship.

Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year
competition

On Sunday 8th February, a group of Nova Hreod students took part in the
19th Swindon Young Musician of the Year competition at the Blunsdon
House Hotel, organised by the Rotary Club of North Swindon.
The evening started with the Junior section with songs from Maisey Fry from
Year 7 and Year 8‘s Elizabeth Hext. The quality of the performances was
exceptional and Maisey‘s vocal performance of ‗Mama Do‘ won her an
outstanding 2nd place against strong competition from 16 other musicians
and singers.
Year 11 Jonatan Akala, who sang his own composition, and Year 10‘s Kate
Matthews and Richelle Bull also gave excellent performances in the Senior
Section, against fierce competition. With over 40 entrants across the two
sections, it was a real delight to see the variety and quality of our talented
young people.
Huge congratulations to Year 8‘s Chelsea Barbieri who was
selected to represent Wiltshire Under-14s at football
against Cornwall this month.

Year 7
Read For My School
Smoking health talk
Year 7 students have been reading books online and
logging their reading as part of the Read for My School
8 week reading challenge. All students taking part were
entered into a draw to win a prize in assembly on 5th
March, World Book Day.
On 23rd February the STOP Smoking Team from SEQOL gave an
excellent presentation to our year 7 students with the aim of preventing
students wanting to smoke. The presentation looked at a variety of
different aspects of smoking from its effects on the body, what
chemicals are in a cigarette and how many people would die from
smoking related illnesses throughout the duration of the presentation.
The presentation encouraged students to make positive life decisions
and to consider the long term impacts of smoking on their futures.
The lucky winners were: Jasmine Bagnall, Sevval
Guloglu, Sarah King, Dominic McGleish, Lilly Pike, Kira
Staffell and Charlie Wilkins.
Year 7 Road Safety Presentation
On 9th February the Momo Theatre Company delivered an informative and very
funny presentation on how to keep safe travelling to school.
The performance was essentially just two actors giving a ‗boring‘ speech on Road
Safety, but through the use of slapstick comedy and mimicry the ‗boring‘ talk
became a very funny and memorable show.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the show and hopefully have taken on board the
importance on keeping safe whilst out and about.
DISCO Night
The Year 7‘s and 8‘s who attended the disco on 12th February had a great night! There was good music, lots of dancing and
even a few medals were handed out! The photo booth was also a huge success and it was fab to see so many students relax,
let their hair down and enjoy themselves after working so hard all term! These great photos say it all!

Challenging Primary Mathematicians

On 6th February we hosted our first Year 5 maths competition for gifted mathematicians from our local primary schools. Nova Hreod
students from Years 7, 8 and 9 worked with the teams of younger students and played a key role in marking and scoring the rounds.
Working in teams of four, the Year 5 students battled it out over challenging rounds including a cross number, logic problem, dingbats
and a relay, with three of those rounds being taken from the UKMT Primary Team Challenge resources.
Competition was tight and the students needed to work as a team and put their mathematical skills to the test right to the very end of the
competition. The achievement of the Year 5 students was fantastic as these were very challenging problems but the students presented
some very admirable scores.

The winning team who lifted the trophy at the end of the event were from Catherine Wayte School with Ferndale Primary School coming
runners-up and third place awarded to the Bridlewood Primary School team.
All the students enjoyed themselves, were impeccably behaved and presented high energy and enthusiasm throughout the event. The
Year 5 students were a pleasure to work with and the Nova Hreod students demonstrated fantastic leadership skills and really enjoyed the
opportunity to be ambassadors for the event:

wonderful talk by Mr Barton at the start, it was a good day, which
should be done again some day‖

Niamh‘s recipe for success

Car, train, taxi and finally… a tractor… to get to our destination of River Cottage HQ down in Axminster.
What an adventure!
Connecting trains departing before we can board them with our
saucepans, and finally re-ticketed onto a secret train route – it
certainly had the makings of a magical mystery tour.
We arrived at River Cottage as the furthest northern entrant in the
South West of England regional final of Springboard‘s FutureChef
2015. Niamh proved to be a champion, participating under
immense pressure in a completely unfamiliar kitchen and under the
scrutiny of a panel of high profile judges. The opposition was
strong and the end results, after 90 minutes in the intense heat of
the kitchen, were nine different main courses and desserts for two
covers. Niamh was a very creditable runner up with the judges
finding it very hard to identify the eventual winner.

Student Librarian of the Month
The LRC offers students from Year 8 onwards the opportunity to train as student librarians to help run the LRC on a daily basis. A
training programme supports our experienced students to mentor our newest recruits. Each month a student is nominated for an
additional award as Librarian of the Month in recognition of their contribution. In January this commendation was awarded to Amber
Dowling and February‘s Librarian of the Month was Lauren Wesley. Congratulations to both girls.

Air tanker visit
Fifteen of our students had an opportunity to visit Air Tanker at RAF Brize Norton. The visit began in a briefing room where Flt Sgt Kev
Murphy showed a presentation on the role of the RAF and opportunities available as a career, before being joined by Flt Lt Adam Coxall,
a pilot who flies the A330, commonly known as the Voyager by the RAF. The Voyager has a dual role as an air-to-air tanker and
transport aircraft. It can carry almost 300 troops over 6,000 miles and can refuel aircraft such as Typhoons and Tornados mid-air.
The students enjoyed a tour around the Voyager (on a bitterly cold day) and had the opportunity to look on board the aeroplane, sit on
the flight deck and have a question and answer session with the RAF aircrew.
Modern Languages trip to Paris
On the morning of 13th February, 28 of us set off on a thrilling trip to Paris accompanied by
Mrs Peach, Miss Lown, Mr Tollington and Mr Foster.
We stayed at the PGL Château de Grande Romaine, about 20 minutes from the
centre of Paris. Our days were packed with sightseeing: Tour Montparnasse, Notre Dame, Sacre
Coeur, the Louvre, les Invalides and a cruise down the Seine.
Each evening the students were able to use the extensive facilities on offer at the Château and one
evening, we took part in crêpe making to get in practice for our return on Shrove Tuesday!
The final day was spent at Disneyland – many of the students bringing back souvenirs and almost
all having collected ―autographs‖ of some very famous Disney characters!
The staff would like to thank our students for their impeccable behaviour and enthusiasm they
showed during our stay and hope they enjoyed our company as much as we did theirs!

Eleven of Nova Hreod‘s GR8 Book Debate readers of 2013/2014
joined students from across the Swindon Secondary schools at an
event with award winning author Sally Gardner, on her world
promotional tour to share her new book ‗The Door that Led to
Where‘. During the event at Dorcan Academy, students heard
about Sally‘s
journey from her
challenges with
dyslexia
to
become
an
accomplished
writer. The talk
was followed by
a lively Q&A
session
and
book signing.

while our Key Stage 4 students‘ focus was upon the skills of Mind
Mapping and understanding What is Plagiarism when they write
up essays and answers.

British Science Week ran from 13th- 20th March. To celebrate we ran a Squashed Tomato Challenge for all of the Key Stage 3 students. The
task was focussed on the challenges facing people in Nepal who need to find methods of transporting produce down steep mountains. Using
a guy line, students worked in teams of six to find a way to securely attach tomatoes to a rocket so they could safely travel down the
mountain.
The Year 9 teams created amazing designs and we had a range of different results. Some devices barely moved; some zipped along so fast
that all the tomatoes jumped out half way along. In the end
we had one team that scored 12 points.
Next, the Year 7s created their contraptions to carry the
tomatoes. Using only the few materials given every team
had a different idea on how to solve the problem. ―The
Pigeon Squad‖ managed to clock up an astonishing 16
points by carrying eight tomatoes along the wire.
Finally it was the turn of Year 8. Once again every team
worked hard to compete against each other to be the
winners. ―The Overweight Crabs‖ wowed everyone with
their design as it was the only device to reach the end of
the guy wire carrying three tomatoes.
All of the students worked incredibly well during all the
activities and demonstrated brilliant team work and
problem solving skills.

Since the introduction of our new uniform to Year 7 in September, some of our older students have also chosen to wear our new design. We
would like to remind parents of our expectation that all students should wear the new uniform with effect from September 2015, as outlined

upon a three month project with The Brilliant

Club.
The Brilliant Club offers school pupils access to University style teaching by
way of lectures, seminars and tutorials with PhD students and post-doctoral
researchers, with the explicit aim of giving the participating students the
confidence to apply to the most academically selective universities in the
country.

University of London, where the students met their PhD tutor for the first time.
In each of the following weeks, the tutor has worked with the students at
Nova Hreod, engaging them in some very high level discussions about subjects
such as consequentialism and deontology! The tutor has been very impressed
with the standard of their work and homework.

This week, our scholars have moved on to looking at different philosophical viewpoints which challenge the definitions of last week‘s
topics. They then started to learn about how to structure an academic essay and their homework this week is to complete their plans and
make a start on their introductions. Relevant sources and their validity were considered for referencing and students had the opportunity
to give their opinions on these sources.

Holly from Year 8 said: I think it‘s really fun but challenging, which is a good thing because it gives me a sense of achievement as I
complete the homework. The homework is not too hard because my tutor is really helpful and sends us links to websites and the
PowerPoint slides she uses in the tutorials. I can see how the homework will link together to create our final assignment.

We are always keen to work with members of the local
community who are able to offer opportunities for our students
to interact with local employers, learn about industry by
involvement with local businesses, and develop new community
activities. We are looking for professionals to add to our contact
list. In return, we can offer promotional opportunities for your
business such as sponsorship and advertising.
The Super Nova is distributed to around 2,000 homes every
term as well as local libraries and other community buildings
throughout the town. It is also published on the internet and
shared on social media sites. We would like to develop a
local services section to help cover the cost of publishing the
newsletter and sharing our success stories within the local
community.
