Principal’s Message
MAY 2015
Students’ Council Message
To all members of our school community:
It is finally beginning to feel like spring! Although the change in
weather is much appreciated, it brings with it the start of a very
hectic race to the end of the school year. Even though the weather
is getting nicer, it is important that students remember the
attendance policy and stay in class. It is also important that
students whose mid-semester marks might have been lower than
they hoped, see their teachers as soon as possible. Now is the time
to talk to teachers about how you can improve your grades and
achieve your goals for your classes. If you feel that you need further
support, please make an appointment with guidance or an
administrator to discuss how we can help. Waiting until the last
minute is never a good idea, especially for those of you in grade 12.
If you are worried that you might not get a credit that you need, it is
imperative that you create a plan for success. We have many
supports available to help you with this, but it is up to you to take
initiative and ask! Also, please remember that appeals for course
placement s will happen at the end of May.
I would like to take this time to ask that all school community
members use the garbage cans that we have placed around the
parking lot. We did a spring clean up last week and will need to do
another as the last little bit of snow melts. We are having a real
problem with littering in our parking lot and I am asking everyone to
please try and clean this up. Our beautiful school is in the middle of
a beautiful area where people like to walk in the woods, go fishing
and enjoy the outdoors. Please be respectful to both the school and
community and put your garbage in the trash.
And finally, to the graduating class, please remember to pay
your grad fees in the office. As discussed at our grad meeting,
these fees help cover some of the cost of graduation activities and
the graduation ceremony itself. All graduates must pay their student
and grad fees. If your family is not able to pay the fees at this time
please have a parent or guardian contact me to discuss possible
options. I would not want financial difficulties to cause any
student to miss out on any of these activities. I would also
recommend that graduates participate in as many grad activities as
possible. You only get to do this once. Have fun! Please also
remember that NRHS rules and expectations apply at all school
organized grad activities.
I hope that you all have a great month!
Morgan Peters and Kyle MacKenzie
2014-2015 Co-Presidents
Hey Nighthawks!
April was a great month, even if it looked more like
winter than April!
We had a very successful trip to Italy and also a
successful blood donor clinic, with many people
donating their blood to save a life. Our rugby boys
played their first game winning against East Hants.
The School Advisory Council had an extremely
productive meeting last month and is preparing for a
busy year next year.
We held our Students’ Council presidential
elections, and after a close race two winners
emerged: Kyle Vandertoorn and Ali Aghayan.
Congratulations to both of them!
May is going to be a very busy month, so stay tuned
Nighthawks!

World Class Opportunity
In August 2015, William Gray, grade 11, will be attending
the Quantum Cryptography School for Young Students
(QCSYS) at the University of Waterloo Institute for
Quantum Computing (IQC)!
Each summer the University of Waterloo IQC runs the
QCSYS where students get a firsthand look into the
physics and mathematics of quantum mechanics,
cryptography, and how they merge into one of the most
exciting topics in contemporary science—quantum
cryptography.
Participants meet and collaborate with some of the most
renowned researchers the field has to offer. They spend
eight days in residence in Waterloo attending lectures and
performing hands-on experiments and group work focused
on developing unbreakable encryption that protects
communication.
Pictured above are William Gray (left) and Mr. Tim Bennett,
William’s physics teacher.
Open to students worldwide in grades 11 or 12, only forty
are accepted into the program. This is truly a world class
opportunity.
Congratulations William!
Message from NSCC-Pictou Campus
As spring finally arrives and you look forward to the end of the year and to graduation for those of you in grade 12, the Pictou Campus of
the Nova Scotia Community College is hoping that you keep us in mind as you plan your future career.
Did you know that NSCC accepts applications from students in Grade 11? It’s never too early to start planning!
Along with a variety of programs in the School of Business and the School of Trades and Technology, we also offer programs in:
The School of Health and Human Services - Programs offered include two year diplomas in Practical Nursing, Cosmetology and Social
Services, and a one year certificate in Continuing Care.
Social Services is a new program in the college. It was created in response to a need in the community for graduates with a broad skill set
and the ability to work with diverse populations. It prepares students to work in social services agencies either in the public or private sector
that provide services to children, youth, and adults. If you are a helping people person, this program is for you!
The School of Access - If you are finishing up your High School Education and your career goals have changed, you may need to either
upgrade your marks or pick up missing credits in Academic courses, such as Math, English, Biology, Chemistry or Physics. NSCC offers
these courses either face to face or online through the Academic and Career Connections (ACC) program. We can help you reach your
career goal.
Each year, Pictou presents the GET STARTED event with workshops and program information for incoming students. All students who have
applied and been accepted to a program are invited. However, students who are undecided are also welcome to attend an information and Q and A
session during this event about all things NSCC. This year’s GET STARTED event is from 6:30-7:30 on Thursday May 21st at Pictou Campus on
Acadia Avenue in Stellarton. Hope to see you there. 
Call us to learn more at 902-752-2002 or 902-755-7299. Or visit our website at www.nscc.ca or Facebook page at NSCC Pictou.
Happy spring!
