MESSAGE FROM OUR SOCIETY’S PATRON
It has been my pleasure over many years as the Society’s Patron to welcome our entrants from
near and far, to take part in our 61st Annual Festival. Our Society is proud to be able to provide
a platform for talent in the performing arts to be seen and heard in an atmosphere that promotes
healthy competition between amateur performers. In the greater Auckland Area we are now the
oldest Competition Society, and are proud of our long heritage and the support we have been
given over the many years by our sponsors, supporters and previous competitors.
The Society’s Committee have worked hard to prepare this programme for our competitors and
for the enjoyment of the Society’s supporters. My very best wishes go to each of you as you
compete in your classes. Competitions are not only about competing, they are also about
hearing and seeing others perform, meeting new people and making new friends. It is an
opportunity for you to meet people with interests similar to yours and form lasting friendships.
Some of you will have participated in our previous competitions and we thank you for coming
back and giving us the pleasure of seeing you perform once again. I would like to extend a
special welcome to those of you who are new to our Competitions. The Society’s Committee
makes every effort to ensure that your participation in our classes will be enjoyable for you. In
doing so it aims to provide unbiased adjudication by involving adjudicators of the highest
professional standards. Over the years many of our competitors have gone on to join
orchestras, participate in shows and choirs, perform in theatre, opera and dance, and some of
our competitors have become solo performers both nationally and internationally.
I would like to thank the business community and individual donors for assisting with sponsoring
our Competitions, and our hardworking Committee members for their voluntary time and effort in
making these Competitions possible each year. I trust that for those of you who are visiting the
North Shore take the opportunity to visit some of our recreational facilities and support our local
business community.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Last year we celebrated our Diamond Jubilee (60 years) which was a milestone for us as we
are the oldest Performing Arts Competitions Society in the Auckland Area. The Society has the
principle objective to provide a platform for students of all the performing arts to have their
individual performances critiqued by an independent adjudicator experienced in their area of
performance. Please take a moment or two and read the biographical sketches of our
adjudicators at the front of each programme and look at their achievements - Most of them
could boast that their career started as you are now, as a competitor, and are now giving back
to Societies such as ours the benefit of the experience they gained when they had their own
performances critiqued as their careers progressed.
This year it is my pleasure to welcome two new convenors to our fold, Nikki Reynolds (Dance)
and Mi Jin Park (Piano and Instrumental). I hope that both Convenors will be given the same
support as their predecessors, Jill Quirke and Maureen Webley who between them have many
years of involvement in promoting their area of interest in the Performing Arts.
To the Competitors, thank you for entering, teachers, thank you for encouraging your students
to enter, parents thank you for supporting your children in the area of their performance. To our
loyal band of helpers and our sponsors who enable these competitions to take place, a big
thank you. I hope that the experience and rapport that you gain during this period will be
enjoyable for all of you, performers and audience alike.

GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR COMPETITORS
Please read the conditions carefully. Strict observance of these Rules must be followed.
1.
Order of Performance
Competitors names will appear in the Programme in the order in which they will compete
unless pre-arranged by the Stage Manager.
All Competitors must be in attendance at least 15 minutes prior to the commencement of the
Class. The approximate start times will be listed in the Programme. Those not present when
called may, at the discretion of the Stage manager forfeit the right to compete.
2. Stage
No person other than Officials, Performers and Stage Prop handlers are permitted in the wings
of the stage during performances.
3. Photocopied Music
It is not permitted by law to use photocopied music when performing on stage. However, a
photocopy may be given to the Adjudicator.
4. Cameras, Video Cameras, and Mobile Phones
Taking of photographs with or without flash is prohibited during a performance. At either the
commencement or end of the performance photographs may be taken of your own child or
student only, but due to misuse of the privilege, VIDEO recording is not permitted except for
NCEA assessment when permission from the Section Convenor must be obtained in advance
before any Video recording is done. Written confirmation from the school will be needed to
show that the Video is required for the NCEA assessment.
5. Prizes
Prizes will be awarded at the Adjudicators discretion.
If there are less than four entrants only first prize may be awarded. This rule may not apply to
individually sponsored classes.
When two or more competitors tie for first place, the adjudicator has the right to recall those
performers to determine a winner. Should a first equal be awarded both the first and second
prize monies will be amalgamated and split equally.
6. Trophies
All Trophies and Cups remain the property of the Society and must be returned to the Society’s
office no later than 1 December of the year of presentation. The engraving of the Trophies
and Cups is the responsibility of the Winner.

PRIZES:
Unless otherwise stated prizes have been donated by the NSPACS.
If there are less than four Competitors only one prize will be awarded at
the discretion of the Adjudicator. Should there be a dead heat for first
the value of the prizes will be combined and divided equally.
Example: - the first and second prize money will be amalgamated and
two firsts will be given.
TIME LIMIT:
5 minutes unless otherwise stated. Time limits where stated will be
adhered to. The Adjudicator has the option of ringing the bell to stop the
performance when the time limit has been reached.
ADJUDICATOR’S MUSIC:
All copies must have in large print the class number and the
Competitor’s number and name clearly marked (in that order) in
the top right hand corner. Also the page number should be given
if music is in an album.
The use of photocopied music on the stage will not be permitted.
DEFINITION OF CLASSICAL MUSIC:
“Classical” is taken to mean Composers before Schubert. “Romantic or
Modern” is taken to mean works by Composers from Schubert
onwards.
SPECIAL AWARDS
F.H. Taylor Cup and $25 will be awarded to the most promising North Shore Pianoforte
Competitor between the age of 10 and under 16 years. Competitors must live within the
North Shore City boundaries or be a Pupil of a Teacher on the North Shore.
Diamond Jubilee Plate for String Players.
This Award will be made to the most promising String Player competing in the competitions
this year.
Award for Excellence in Performance for String Players.
This cup is awarded at the discretion of the Adjudicator to a String Player who shows
excellence in performance, but has not already won a Cup this year.
ADJUDICATOR BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
After gaining a scholarship at eighteen, Kim Naden left Auckland to study at the Royal
College of Music in London, majoring in performance and piano accompaniment. After 4
years study and a successful career performing throughout England and teaching in London,
he became repetiteur for the Royal Ballet School and worked with many Artists and Teachers
from the Royal Ballet Company. Since his return home to Auckland, Kim has set up a large
private teaching practice and is on the teaching staff of Kings College. He is in demand as an
accompanist and Adjudicator in all the NZ Performing Arts Festivals and has lectured for the
Institute of Registered Music Teachers (IRMT) as well as tutored in their teaching workshops.

National Young Performer 2015 Criteria For Acoustic Instruments
A Performers shall be 15 and under21 years as at 1st October 2015. Competitors who
have already been nominated are not eligible for this class.
B This is open to competitors on any (non-electric) acoustic instrument.*
C The Program should consist of three contrasting pieces from different periods of
Musical history. i.e.Baroque, Classical, Romantic 20th Century or Contemporary.
D Each competitor shall perform a programme with a maximum time of 20 mins. There
will be a percentage mark for the complete program. A penalty of 5 marks will be
imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 30 seconds or more.
E There will be a semi final of up to 6 competitors who will repeat their full programme
as set out in B and C. Competitors will be chosen based on their marks in the
Preliminary round.
F For the Final Award Concert three competitors will be recalled and will perform one
piece of the Adjudicator’s choice from their original programme.
Please Note Rule 12 : The Same item may not be performed twice in the
Competitions.
* NB Pianoforte is not included under Acoustic Instruments.
FEES.
The nominee is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young
Performer Awards ie $175 .00 inc GST.
Direct Entry : If the adjudicator considers that more than two competitors have
reached a sufficient standard the Adjudicator may report to the Committee that those
Competitors should be given the option of a Direct Entry. The Direct Entry Competitor
will be responsible for paying the full entry fee, i.e. $250 inc GST.
