SteveMartin
W
inning is all that Old Dominion
wrestling coach Steve Martin has ever
known. From his days as a high school
wrestler at Kempsville High School in
Virginia Beach, as a three-time Virginia
high school state champion, to his days at the University
of Iowa where he was an all-American and Midlands
Champion, and as the head coach at Great Bridge High
School, all Steve Martin has ever known is winning.
The winning tradition he had as a coach has already
broken through as the third-year coach at Old Dominion
readies his wrestlers for what could be the toughest
schedule Old Dominion has ever faced.
In 2005-06, Martin added to his rapidly building
reputation at ODU with a season ending at 11-7-1. The
Monarchs took second at the CAA Tournament after
tying for fifth the year before. Also, Martin coached four
wrestlers to NCAA qualification, the most since 1995.
In 2004-05, Martin led the Monarchs to their first
double-digit win total since 1996, as the Monarchs held an
11-5 dual mark and a 6-2 record in CAA competition. The
11-5 record was also the first above .500 since 2000-01.
Highlights of Martin’s rookie season included Old
Dominion’s first victories over Rider and Boston University
as well as individual wrestlers winning numerous Wrestler
of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors from the CAA.
The Monarchs upgraded their schedule and even
though Martin gave his new team a tougher schedule, five
wrestlers earned over 30 wins and seven overall notched
20 victories or more in 2004-05.
He again recruited one of the top recruiting classes
in the nation for the 2006-07 season, further preparing the
Monarch wrestling program for success. W.I.N. Magazine
ranked the incoming class #8, InterMat ranked it #10,
while Wrestling USA Magazine ranked it #9.
The foundation for Martin’s winning resume was also
built on his pedigree.
His father, the legendary Billy Martin, is the father of
Virginia wrestling and won 22 state wrestling team titles in
23 years and coached dozens of state champions that went
on to win and place at the NCAA championships.
Martin’s brother David was a four-time Virginia high
school state champion at Granby high school under his
father and went on to wrestle at Indiana State.
Billy Martin, Jr. was a three-time NCAA all-American
at Oklahoma State, finishing second in 1974. Wayne Martin
preceded Steve at Great Bridge after wrestling at Old
Dominion, and has now taken over again at Great Bridge
now that Steve is the coach at ODU.
The groundwork for a successful wrestling coach was
set in motion even before Steve Martin stepped on the mat
as a competitor.
As a coach, he saw success only matched by his father,
leading Great Bridge to 13 state championships in 14 years.
Each of those 13 years, Martin’s Wildcats were nationally
ranked.
Moving up to the college ranks, Martin still keeps
the winning attitude that’s built around hard work in the
wrestling room, hard work on your own, and hard work in
the classroom.
“We had this emphasis in college, where you broke
somebody,” Steve Martin told the Virginian-Pilot in 2001. “You won by 15 points, or you pinned them, and at the
end of the match, they crawled off the mat mentally and
physically destroyed and they never wanted to step on the
mat again with you.”
Martin coached 40 high school state champions,
98 state place-winners, 35 All-Americans (freestyle and
folkstyle) and six high school national champions. He also
coached NCAA Division I National Champion Carl Perry
THIRD SEASON IOWA ‘91 Norfolk, VA

state championships at
Great Bridge. Perry is
currently an assistant at
Illinois.
He was awarded
the National Wrestling
Coaches Association
state and regional
coach of the year in
1995 and 2000. The
Norfolk Sports Club
named him the Bob
Bates Award winner
as the Outstanding
Metropolitan Coach of
the Year.
On the high
school level, Martin was active in Virginia USA Wrestling,
coaching at the Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. and has
coached with the Wrestling USA Magazine Dream Team
Classic and the Dapper Dan Classic in Pennsylvania.
At Old Dominion, Martin has more of a challenge and
he readily accepts it. Making the Monarchs program one
of the top programs on the East Coast and in the nation is
paramount.
“Virginia high school wrestling is making a name
for itself on the national level. While we will be recruiting
nationally, it will be goal of our staff to keep these Virginia
kids at home in front of their family and friends,” Martin
said.
Martin’s drive is to make Old Dominion a national
powerhouse and the foundations are formed right now.
The new wrestling room will be operational by 2007 and by
then, Monarch wrestlers will be thriving.
“I want to thank the administration at Old Dominion
for giving me this great opportunity,” said Martin when
he was named head coach in June of 2004. “It has been a
personal goal of mine to coach at the Division I level and
what makes this job even more special is that is in my
home town and close to family, friends and supporters of
wrestling.”
His goal to become a coach was the first step, and
Macy (8), Max (3), Madison (10), Mckenna (7).
with the administration supporting the program, becoming
a winning program will be only a matter of time, Martin
says.
“The administration has given us the resources
to help us build into a national powerhouse. We have
a budget where we are able to travel and see the best
competition, a brand new 9000 sq. ft. wrestling room
opening up in the fall of 07, a full time coaching staff, and
we have matches at home in the Ted Constant Convocation
Center. The university is in a beautiful location, near water
in the Elizabeth River and Virginia Beach. This location has
helped land two top eight recruiting classes in two years.
We look for that success to continue and we are well on our
way to building a national powerhouse.”
Steve and his wife Lori live in Chesapeake, Va. They
have four children; Madison (10), Macy (8), McKenna (7)
and Max (3).
Martin enjoys the outdoors and spending time with
his family. When he is not on the mat, you can find him at
the beach or at the Martin’s farm on Knott’s Island, N.C.

pon coming to Old Dominion as the head assistant,
Lee Pritts was asked by friends and colleagues why
he left Missouri, where he was an assistant coach for
six seasons. The answer was simple.
In his first season with the Monarchs, Dixon helped head
coach Steve Martin’s squad to an 11-7-1 overall mark having
competed against 11 of the nation’s top 25 teams. Old
Dominion took second at the CAA Tournament and had four
wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Tournament, the most since
1995.
“Old Dominion is a gold-mine,” he said.
That gold-mine and the potential for winning made Pritts and
easy choice for long-time friend Steve Martin.
Pritts brings an immediate intensity to the Old Dominion
wrestling program that meshes well with the current staff and
its direction for the program.
Dixon came to Old Dominion after serving as an assistant
coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
While at JMU he coached two conference place winners and
brought in the most credentialed recruiting class since the
university dropped scholarships in 2000. Among his recruits included three state titles and
three runner-up finishes.
As a competitor, Pritts was a three-time NCAA qualifier from
1996-98. After a stint at Garden City Community College where he was teammates with
former Old Dominion wrestler Mark Strickland (1997-98), Pritts claimed All-American
honors in 1996 at Eastern Michigan.
Prior to his stint at JMU, Dixon coached
four Academic All-Americans, five national
qualifiers, and the most wrestlers in the
school’s history to finish in the top twelve
in the country with three at the University
of Indianapolis.
Unseeded coming into the 1996 tournament at Minneapolis, Pritts achieved All- American
status. Pritts won two Mid-America Conference championships and after transferring to
Clarion for his senior season, won Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and Eastern
Wrestling League titles at 118 pounds.
A Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native, Pritts followed high school coach Brian Smith to Missouri.
Pritts was a vital piece of Missouri’s rebuilding mission. The Tigers were perennially at the
bottom of the Big 12 conference, but with Pritts, the Tigers earned their first victory over
national powerhouse Oklahoma State in 2003-04.
Dixon also spent some time as an assistant
coach with Arsenal Technical High School
in Indianapolis, Indiana, coaching four
individual conference champions, two
sectional finalists, and a city champion, the
school’s first ever freshman to win a city
championship.
Missouri had breakout seasons, winning the 2002 Virginia Duals National College
Division.
He’s coached six NCAA
All-American and two
NCAA finalists as well as
helped guide the Tigers to
tournament titles at the Reno
Tournament of Champions,
Southern Scuffle, Mat Town
USA tournament and a
runner-up fi nish in the
National Wrestling Coaches
Association National Duals,
which puts the top 16 teams
in the nation against each
other in a dual-tournament
format.
A 2001 graduate of the Indiana University
with a degree in management, Dixon
was a four-year varsity letter winner for
the Hoosiers. An NCAA qualifier, he
was a 2001 University National Freestyle
Champion and placed fourth at the Pan
American Games. He also played Football
at Indiana his senior year.
Dixon will assist in recruiting, putting together work out regimens, and coaching and
scheduling practices.

While wrestling under NCAA and World Champion Terry
Brands, Sioredas earned All-American status by placing 5th
at 165 pounds in the 2005 NCAA Division I tournament. This
was in addition to being named Outstanding Wrestler and
Wrestler of the Year in the Southern Conference, as well as
being ranked as high as 2nd in the country.
Prior to joining the Chattanooga squad, Sioredas wrestled
for three seasons at the University of Missouri where he was
an All Big XII athlete. In 2000, Jon was a VHSL AAA State
Champion and All-American under Coach Steve Martin at Great Bridge High School in
Chesapeake, VA. He was also an AAU National Champion in 1999.
Sioredas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the

2006-07 SEASON OUTLOOK
157: Redshirt freshman Chris Brown looks to make a run into the national
spot light this year. Brown is another Great Bridge alumni who wrestled
for Coach Martin, where he was a two-time high school state champion as
well as a high school All-American. Brown will continue his tutelage under
Martin as he strives for All-American status this year. “Brown is definitely
one of the most talented wrestlers in our room. He has All-American
potential and we expect great things this season and throughout his career,”
said Assistant Coach Jon Sioredas.
165: Junior Nick Pullano returns for his 3rd season at Old Dominion and will
be moving up a weight class. Once he heard his former coach was taking the
Old Dominion job, Pullano immediately transferred looking to continue his
success. In high school, Martin coached him to All-American honors in 2003.
“Nick is one of the few veterans we have in our lineup and we will look to
him for leadership and experience. He is one of the hardest workers in our
room and we look for that to carry over in matches,” Martin said.
174: Bryan Koz will see mat time this season after redshirting last year,
and now moving up a weight class for the Monarchs. He wrestled for high
school national powerhouse St. Edward, where he was a state finalist. True
freshman Derek Coffey will be brawling for the position at 174. Coffey was
an all-state competitor in Pennsylvania. “This should be another very highly
contested weight class. We look for great things out of both of them this
season,” Martin said.
184: True Freshman Jesse Strawn was a high school All-American, Brute
Adidas All-American, two-time state champion, and a two-time runner-up.
Strawn will step in right away for the Monarchs this season. He is the third
person on the conference’s pre-season All-Freshman Team. Martin said,
“Jesse has only begun to scratch the surface of how good he can be. He has
won his whole life and we expect that to continue during his career at Old
Dominion. He will be a force to reckon with very soon.”
197: Sophomore David Mendoza returns for the Monarchs for his second
season and is moving up a weight class. Mendoza was the starter last year at
184, where he landed a winning season. He looks to build off of last season
with a CAA title and a berth to the national tournament.
285: Rounding out the Monarch’s lineup this season will be redshirt
freshman Matt Pellar. The two-time all-state competitor will finalize the
06-07 Old Dominion line up. “Pellar made huge gains last season for us in
the room and we look for that to continue this season,” said Assistant Coach
Mike Dixon.
This young lineup will see very few breaks this season as Old
Dominion faces one of the toughest schedules in the country. “Our staff
will do a great job in preparing our guys for our schedule this season,” said
Coach Martin. Everyone on our team has high goals and we expect this to
be a breakout season for Old Dominion. This should be the start of what we
expect to be many great seasons for the Monarchs.
Under third year Head Coach Steve Martin, the Old Dominion
Monarchs look to field one of their best teams in years, along with facing
one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Monarchs will see 20 of
the top 30 schools in the country from last season including duals against
Missouri and Hofstra, as well as facing perennial top twenty programs,
Northern Iowa and Purdue. The Monarchs will also be traveling to several of
the top tournaments across the country this season, and will see opponents
from powerhouse programs such as Minnesota, Michigan, Cornell, Central
Michigan, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan State, Edinboro, Penn State, Arizona
State just to name a few. With back-to-back top eight ranked recruiting classes
in the fold, the Monarchs have the athletes to contend with the national
schedule.
“This is probably the toughest schedule Old Dominion has ever
had. Our staff’s goal was to schedule meets so that all 10 weight classes
will see the majority of guys ranked in the top 20 in the country. We have
accomplished that,” said Head Coach Steve Martin. “We will be a very young
team, but we expect to make huge gains throughout the season, and we want
to attain our goals of winning a team conference championship this season as
well as having multiple All-Americans at this year’s NCAA tournament.”
Starting Martin’s third season at ODU, both of his recruiting classes
have been exceptional to say the least. Along with a brand new wrestling
facility currently being built and an elite caliber coaching staff, the Monarch
grapplers have no choice but to step into the national spotlight and become a
national powerhouse program. The 06-07 campaign will be the third year of
the rebuilding process for ODU, as the team looks to win the CAA conference
and place top 25 in the NCAA Division I National Tournament.
Here is a look at the 2006-07 Old Dominion Monarchs by weight:
125: Christian Staylor returns his senior season looking to place in the NCAA
Championships. Staylor is one of three wrestlers from the tradition-rich
program at Great Bridge High, where he was a three-time state champ and
Cadet National Champ. Not a stranger to the NCAA tournament, this year
could mark his third trip. A 2005 CAA conference champion looks to cap off
this campaign with All-American status. “Staylor is the veteran of the team,
and we will be looking to him for leadership in helping our team to reach
new heights this season,” said Coach Martin. Two-time high school allamerican Kyle Hutter will look to make an immediate impact at 125 as well.
133: Junior BJ Compton returns for his 3rd season at Old Dominion. He will
be dropping a weight class from last season, which ended in a 3rd place finish
at the CAA tournament, and will be the front runner for this weight. This
Virginia high school standout, with 4 state titles, looks to have a breakout
season this year as he takes a shot at his first NCAA tournament. Also
fighting for this spot will be freshman Adam Koballa. Koballa was named
to the conference’s pre-season All-Freshman Team and was a two-time Ohio
state champ and a 2006 Junior National finalist.
141: Ryan Williams took 2nd at the CAA Tournament as a freshman last
season which qualified him for the NCAA Tournament. “Ryan turned out to
become a very reliable wrestler for us last season. He has made tremendous
improvement since he has come to Old Dominion and we look for Ryan
to contend for All-American honors this season,” said Coach Martin. Also
battling it out for a starting spot at this weight will be former NCAA qualifier,
senior Michael Martin (Chesapeake, VA / Univ. of Illinois). The four-time
Virginia high school state champ and high school national champion spent
time at the University of Illinois before transferring to Old Dominion. A
two-time Maryland state champion and double Junior National All-American
Cam Watkins (Rockville, MD) is also in the running for time on the mat at
141. “This is definitely one of our deepest weight classes and we feel any one
of these guys can step in for us and continue a high level of production,”
Coach Martin said.
149: Kaylen Baxter (Fairbanks, AK) returns after red shirting last season.
Baxter was a 3-time Alaska state champion as well as a Junior National
All-American. He is also a FILA Junior National All-American after placing
at last year’s tournament in Las Vegas. Joey Metzler (Dayton, VA) a true
freshman from Turner Ashby High School was a three-time state finalist
as well as a state champion. He will see time in the line up and make an
immediate impact this year.

provider for Old Dominion Wrestling.
The wrestling staff is proud and thankful to be associated with this
organization, which provides the finest in wrestling gear.
In 1949, Kihachiro Onitsuka began his athletic footwear company
(Onitsuka Co., Ltd.) by manufacturing basketball shoes out of his living
room in Kobe, Japan. He chose the name ASICS® for his company in
1977, based on a famous Latin phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano”,
which when translated expresses the ancient ideal of “A Sound Mind
in a Sound Body.” Taking the acronym of this phrase, ASICS® was
founded on the belief that the best way to create a healthy and happy
lifestyle is to promote total health and fitness. ASICS® products were
introduced to the United States in 1977. Cliff Keen was founded by the
legendary University of Michigan wrestling coach of the same name in
1958. Keen was the inventor of the wrestling head guard and the coach

Back-to-Back Top Eight Recruiting
Classes for the Monarchs
SEASON REVIEW
Since head coach Steve Martin took the helm three years ago he has certainly put his
footprint down at Old Dominion. His first two recruiting classes at ODU have been ranked
among the best in the nation. Heading into the 2005-06 season ODU landed the 8th ranked
recruiting class according to InterMat and the 10th according to W.I.N. Magazine. Entering this
season, the two polls switched with W.I.N. Magazine rankingh ODU’s incomers 8th in the nation
and InterMat giving the Monarchs the ten spot.
The Old Dominion Wrestling team continued to build on their
upward momentum towards becoming a nationally recognized
program during the 2005-06 season, recording an 11-7-1 overall
record after competing against 11 of the nation’s top 25 teams. The
Monarchs took second at the CAA Tournament after tying for fifth
the previous year, and had four wrestlers qualify for the NCAA
Tournament, the most since 1995.
Senior Adam Wright had a breakout final season at 197
pounds. Ranked in the top 20 for the majority of the season, and
as high as 15th, Wright led the team in wins with 32 giving him his
third consecutive 30-win season. A 2005-06 NCAA qualifier, Wright
finished his career at Old Dominion with a 119-31 record, and
grabbed a team high six technical falls, as well as five major decisions
and nine pins. He went 2-2 at the NCAA’s.
Wright fought to a sixth place finish at the Missouri Open
and Mat Town USA, and beat tough top 20 ranked opponents from
schools such as Edinboro, Northern Iowa, and conference rival
Hofstra. He made Dean’s list his fall senior semester as a mechanical
engineering major, along with being named CAA Wrestler of the
Week three times this season. At the Virginia Intercollegiates, Wright
came away with this third consecutive State Champion title, only
the 17th wrestler to ever accomplish that feat. He was named the
tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler for capturing his 101st career win
in the championship bout.
Freshman Ryan Williams made a name for himself by winning
a starting position at 133 pounds midway into the season. Williams
went 3-1 at the CAA Tournament to take second place and earn
him a spot in the NCAA Tournament where he fell to his first two
opponents and was eliminated. He took seventh at Mat Town and
the East Stroudsburg Open, and finished seventh at the Virginia
Intercollegiates. Williams led the team in pins with 10 and was
second on the team for wins by decision with 16, earning a 29-15
record. He also won CAA Freshman of the Week honors for February
7, 2006, after going undefeated in back-to-back matches against
conference opponents.
The Monarchs opened the season with three dual matches at
the Avalon Duals, where they beat Maryland 24-17 and Slippery
Rock 31-9, but then fell to Edinboro 41-3. After competing in a slew
of tournaments in the season and meeting some tough competition,
the Monarchs returned to dual action as they hosted the University
of Northern Iowa for the first time in the history of the program but
lost 34-6.
From there, the Monarchs then beat the Citadel 22-13 and
took first at the Virginia Intercollegiate State Tournament for the
first time since 1994. ODU head coach Steve Martin was voted the
tournament’s Coach of the Year. The next weekend the Monarchs
competed in the Virginia Duals, splitting the first day after beating
Virginia Tech 30-15 and falls to Bloomsburg 19-13. ODU lost a close
match the next day to conference rival Drexel 24-17. Competing in
the CAA duals the following weekend, Old Dominion went 3-1-1
recording wins over Sacred Heart (27-16), Drexel (21-15), and Boston
University (34-10). The Monarchs fell to Hofstra (26-15) and tied
Rider (18-18).
Finishing off the season with a series of duals, the Monarchs
dropped a close home match to UVA 19-17. ODU then followed
the loss with a four-match win streak after downing UNC-G 22-16,
George Mason 39-9, Campbell 34-14, and VMI 28-12. The Monarchs
ended the season with a close loss to UNC-Chapel Hill 19-16.
This season, four incoming wrestlers were named All-American’s by Wrestling USA.
Jesse Strawn, Billy Chamberlain, James Nicholson, and Adam Koballa all earned honorable
mention honors. Also, Matt Collum transfers in already a junior college national champion.

MONARCH WRESTLING ROOM
The New Home of Monarch Wrestling
A 9,000 square foot state-of-the-art wrestling room will give Old
Dominion wrestling one of the top facilities nationally to practice and
train in. The wrestling facility is being built beside the existing athletic
administration building.
The facility will consist of 4,500 square feet of mat space equivalent to
roughly three championship size mats. The mat room will consist of a
cardio area with air dyne bikes, treadmills, pull-up bars, and climbing
ropes. The mat room is accessible only by a university ID that will have
a card swipe feature on the 2 entrances. Natural light will be present
throughout the entire complex.
Offices for the head and assistant coaches are accessible from the
hallway or the mat room. A film room and recruiting lounge are
connected to the coaches’ office. The film room will consist of a
television to allow for video review and instruction. The entire
complex will be wired for sound to listen to CD’s, radio, and television.
The spacious locker rooms are connected to the wrestling practice
area. In the locker room will be blue carpeting embroidered with a
university logo, lockers with lock boxes, a personal stool for each
athlete and nameplates above each locker. Spacious shower and
bathroom facilities exist as well. Separate locker rooms and showers
will exist for the coaching staff.
As ODU wrestling continues to build into a national powerhouse it

Buddy was a two-time NCAA All-American at ODU, placing fourth in 1980 and seventh in 1982.
After graduating from ODU with a degree in secondary education, he went on to serve in the U.S. Marines
and became a 10-time world medalist, a three-time National Greco Roman Champion, and was voted most
outstanding wrestler at the National Championships and was twice named U.S. Marine Corps Athlete of the
Year.
Buddy is the first of hopefully many more Olympic wrestling hopefuls that have stepped on the mat at
Old Dominion University. He placed sixth in the 1992 Barcelona Games in Greco-Roman.
He is the author of Jump Rope Training published by Human Kinetics, a national motivational speaker,
inventor of Hyperformance jump rope with a patented bearing system, and a trainer to Olympic Athletes, all

Men’s Fitness magazine and appeared on CNN Headline news, NBC, CBS, Business Week, GQ, Jet, New York
Times, Los Angeles Times and will appear in Vogue.
Buddy compiled an impressive 122-13-2 record at Old Dominion, was was voted male athlete of the year three
times; most valuable wrestler four times and was and inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.
“Wrestling built my character, taught me the self discipline, commitment, confidence, persistence, and
courage to fight to the end to live my dreams. My greatest lessons did not come from winning but from what
I learned in the struggle for athletic excellence. I learned about life and about myself. Everyday I call on these
mental skills to help me in my personal life, in business and to continue to stay focused to live my dream to
motivate, educate and encourage others to become fit for life,” said Lee.
“Wrestling helped me to discover, mold and develop my inner self to become a champion in life. As a
result my education and sports background has allowed me to make the right choices in life.”

C
oming off one of the most successful seasons in its
21-year history, the Colonial Atletic Association
continues to enhance its reputation as one of the
nation’s top collegiate conferences.
With a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston
to Atlanta, the CAA encompasses five of the nation’s
nine largest metropolitan areas. On the playing field, the
conference has produced 16 national team champions in
five different sports, 33 individual national champions,
12 national players of the year, 11 national coaches of
the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Even more
impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away
from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars
and 19 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2005-06, the
CAA had 11 ESPN the Magazaine Academic AllAmericans and more than 1,500 of our 4,000 studentathletes posted at least a 3.2 grade point average while
lettering in a varsity sport and received the CAA
Commissioner’s Academic Award.
The landscape of the conference stretches along the
majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s
top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia
(4), Boston (5), Washington, D.C. (8), Atlanta (9) and
Baltimore (23). The number of television homes in the
CAA market exceeds 19 million.
The CAA conducts championships in 21 sports. Male
athletes compete for championships in baseball,
basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming
& diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female
athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross
country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball,
swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball.
The CAA will also begin sponsorship of a 12-team
Division I-AA football league in the fall of 2007.
The conference made its presence known nationally in
men’s basketball, with four teams advancing to postseason play for the second year in a row. George Mason
became the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach
the Final Four, knocking off powerhouses Michigan State,
North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the
way. The Patriots were ranked #8 in the final ESPN/USA
Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ever for a CAA
team. UNC Wilmington claimed its third league title in
the past five years before dropping an overtime decision
in the NCAA Tournament. Old Dominion became the
first conference team to reach the final four of the NIT,
defeating league member Hofstra in the quarterfinals.
Drexel was the first CAA squad to make the final four
of the NIT Pre-Season Tip-Off Tournament, where it
dropped close decisions to national powers Duke and
UCLA. The CAA was ranked eighth out of 31 conferences
in the final RPI with six teams among the top 88 in the
country.
In women’s basketball, the CAA had a league-record four
teams earn post-season berths and was ranked #8 in the
final RPI. Perennial power Old Dominion, which claimed
its 15th consecutive conference title, has a storied history
that includes three national championships (1979, 1980,
1985) and a national runner-up finish in 1997. Delaware,
James Madison and Hofstra received berths in the 2006
WNIT.
Notable Alums
The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA
squads have won 10 field hockey national titles since
the championship began in 1981 and Old Dominion
advanced to the national semifinals in 2005. In baseball,
James Madison’s Kellen Kulbacki was chosen as the CoNational Player of the Year and the league had 28 players
chosen in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft. The CAA
is annually ranked among the nation’s top 10 conferences
in men’s and women’s soccer, and traditionally sends
multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament. Hofstra’s
men’s lacrosse team was ranked #2 in the nation last
season and tied an NCAA record with 17 victories
while CAA women’s tennis players Megan MoultonLevy of William & Mary and Tatsiana Uvarova of VCU
both earned All-America honors after facing off in the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. In 2005-06,
21 league teams earned NCAA Tournament berths in 16
sports. There were 37 CAA student-athletes who earned
All-America honors.
CAA member institutions are committed to excellence
in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was
created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of
expanding their partnership to all aspects of university
life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the
programs already established are an undergraduate
research conference, coordination of study abroad
programs and granting visiting academic status to
student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they
have access to libraries, academic resource centers and
computer labs.

In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions
were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction – the
Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the
Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth
University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and
Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at
George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in
economic sciences.
Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA
since its inception. Long-time members George Mason
University, James Madison University, the University of
North Carolina at Wilmington, Old Dominion University,
Virginia Commonwealth University and the College
of William & Mary were joined by the University of
Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and
Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University
and Northeastern University became members of the
conference on July 1, 2005.
The CAA traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its
current members- George Mason, James Madison, and
William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina
University, the United States Naval Academy and the
University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC
South). During the next two years, the league added 11
sports, acquired two new members (UNC Wilmington
and American University) and decided to form a new
association. The transformation from ECAC South to
CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Old Dominion became
a member of the CAA in 1991-92 and VCU joined the
conference prior to the 1995-96 season.
From all-star athletes to Nobel Prize winning faculty,
the CAA takes great pride in producing performers who
stand out both on the playing field and in the classroom.

Dr. Jim Jarrett
ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
W
hen Jim Jarrett arrived on the campus of Old Dominion
University in the fall of 1967 as a Health and Physical Education
professor, he had little idea that his tenure would be counted
in decades. During that time span, he has led the program from a well
respected NCAA Division II member to a nationally respected Division I
power that has captured 25 national championships.
Jarrett began his 36th year as athletic director in 2006, taking over the
reigns in 1970 when Bud Metheny stepped down from that position. As
one of the youngest athletic directors in the nation at that time, Jarrett
quickly began to make a name for himself and ODU. He committed early
on to a philosophy of “selective excellence,” whereby the department
“selected” its competitive sports and committed itself financially, academically and competitively
to the sports it felt the University could best excel.
In 1974, Jarrett became the first athletic director in the state of Virginia to award grant-in-aids
to women student-athletes. It was a bold move at the time for a young athletic director and
equally young University, but one that paid great dividends. Just five years later, in 1979, the Lady
Monarchs won the first of three national championships in women’s basketball, and led the nation
in attendance.
Under his leadership, the department’s athletic venues have tripled and are considered state of
the art facilities. They include the construction of the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex, the Sailing
Center, the Athletic Administration Building and the 8,500 seat Constant Convocation Center.
Currrently, Jarrett is overseeing construction of the ODU Soccer Building, an indoor tennis facility
and renovations to the Athletic Administration Building, which include a new weight room, training
room and academic advising area.
For all his efforts, Jarrett’s has been honored many times by national and local groups. Most
recently, Jarrett was given Lifetime Achievement awards from NACDA and VaSID. In 2003, he was
named the Southeast Regional Athletic Director of the Year by NACDA. Other awards he’s received
include the Collegiate Director’s Award from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, and
the Norfolk Sports Club Man of the Year. He served as a member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball
Committee and is a past president of the Colonial Athletic Association and the Virginia Sports
Hall of Fame.
An avid golfer and tennis player, Jarrett and his wife Sugie reside in Norfolk.

SAM -
STUDENT ATHLETE
MENTORS
The Student-Athlete Mentor
(SAM) is a peer advising program.
SAMs are nomimated and elected
by their peers. The goal is for each
athletic team to have at least one
SAM. A SAM on the team can help
provide leadership, help teammates with problems, provide
support for freshmen, answer
questions, and refer teammates
to University support services.
SAMs are elected on a yearly basis and any upperclassmen may
be chosen by their peers to serve
as a SAM. All SAMs participate
in a training program following
elections.

WHY MONARCHS?
O
ld Dominion University opened its
doors 76 years ago in an abandoned
public school building to 206 students.
Known at the time as the Norfolk
Division of the College of William and Mary, it
became an independent, four-year institution in
1962 and attained university status in 1969. Today,
Old Dominion enrolls more than 21,000 students,
including approximately 6,200 graduate students.
Its 185-acre Norfolk campus is the primary hub
of activity, along with four additional higher
education centers (Virginia Beach Center, Peninsula
Center, Tri-Cities Center and Northern Virginia
Center). Old Dominion is a versatile university,
committed to its students, their education, personal
development and overall success.
The University offers 68 bachelor’s degrees,
60 master’s degrees, 35 doctoral degrees and two
educational specialist degrees, and consists of six
colleges: Arts and Letters, Business and Public
Administration, Education, Engineering and
Technology, Health Sciences and Sciences.
Students who live on campus may choose
residence hall or apartment-style living. The
attractive Webb University Center provides a
bookstore, cafeteria, food court, game room, lounge
areas, and other shops and offices to serve the
student body.
Old Dominion is one of Virginia’s leading
Ph.D. research institutions. The University
contributes approximately $600 million a year to
the Hampton Roads economy and provides
the community with a variety of programs and
services, including the Applied Research Center,
Virginia Applied Technology and Professional
Development Center, Military Career Transition
Program, Executive Development Center and
the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation
Center. A leader in space-related research, Old
Dominion ranks first in the state in funding
from NASA for research projects. The University
operates one of the largest wind tunnels in the
world at NASA’s Langley Research Center,
and its Oceanography, Nuclear Physics, and
Modeling and Simulation programs are among
the best in the nation.
The University Village, a 75-acre
development along the east side of Hampton
Boulevard, is yet another economic spark
for the region. The 8,600-seat Ted Constant
Convocation Center, which opened in fall 2002,
is the centerpiece of the project. The Village
also currently includes 278 modern apartment
units for students, a fitness center and a variety
of restaurants. Plans call for the addition of a
research park, bookstore, hotel and shopping
center.
In the classroom, Old Dominion students
continue to earn high marks. The University
boasts three USA Today Academic AllAmericans and a Truman Fellow. ODU’s first

Many
people have
wondered
how the Old
Dominion
University
athletic
teams
came to be
officially
known
as the
Monarchs.
For many
years, the
athletic
teams of
the Norfolk Division of the College of William
& Mary (as Old Dominion was formerly
called) were known as the Braves. This was a
derivation of the William & Mary nickname of
Indians. As Old Dominion achieved its own
four-year status and saw its enrollment surpass
that of its Williamsburg neighbor, it was no
longer suitable or acceptable to have its teams
called the Braves.
The name Monarchs evokes much of the
early history of the Commonwealth of Virginia
and of Old Dominion’s mother institution, the
College of William and Mary. The nickname
“Old Dominion” was first coined to the Virginia
colony by King Charles II after Virginia’s
loyalty to the crown during the English Civil
War. Furthermore, William III and Mary II,
whose patronage helped found the College of
William and Mary in Virginia in 1693, ruled
England at the invitation of Parliament as “joint
monarchs.”
The Monarch used by Old Dominion has a
royal crown on a lion’s head, representing an
historic past and a strong future. The school’s
current family of athletic logos were adopted in
April of 2002.
