The Friends of Liberty State Park, also referred to as FOLSP, will host its annual fundraiser and luncheon
on May 18 at Liberty House Restaurant in Jersey City’s Liberty State Park, to raise money for the
gardening and tree planting programs the organization runs to help beautify the park. Reena Rose

with the theme of "putting democracy into action to protect LSP from
privatization," Friends officials announced.
FOLSP is an all-volunteer organization committed to protecting and maintaining a park
suitable for all ages and cultural backgrounds.

Since its start, FOLSP president Sam Pesin explained

members have been working to protect the park from privatization and
commercialization plans.
Most recently FOLSP and other environmental and community groups have lobbied
legislators to reword the Hackensack Meadowlands Act consolidation bill to keep
Liberty State Park development decision in the hands of the the state Department of
Environmental Protection.
LSP Superintendent Rob Rodriguez will give an update on the renovation plans for the
historic Central Rail Road of New Jersey Terminal and the Nature Center at the
luncheon at Liberty House restaurant. Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop is scheduled to
give the opening remarks.

Regional Superintendent of North Region of the State Park Service and former LSP
superintendent Stephen Ellis will receive the Morris Pesin People's Park Award for
his enthusiastic leadership and dedication during his tenure as superintendent of LSP.

Pershing LCC will receive the Corporate Partnership Award for its employees
volunteering on gardening days.
Gardening days refers to an ongoing program "Friends Volunteer Garden Beautification
Program" that occurs most Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, in which volunteers maintain
more than 14 gardens through out the park.
