Acorn April 2015
FROM THE DESK
OF THE PRESIDENT
By Norm Wilcox
I
want to thank everybody for the feedback on my March article concerning
rudeness. This stirred a lot of discussion,
which I think is needed. We’re all guilty of
rudeness from time to time and if we can improve our interaction with others, each of us
can become a better person.
In the 19th century Elizabeth Barrett Browning
wrote, “How do I love thee? Let me count the
ways…”
Let me apply this famous saying to Oakwood
Manor.
Safe - Safe is a relative term, but except for a
few stolen bikes Oakwood Manor is safe. I am
always concerned about safety in the Park and
we should be consciously aware of outsiders
who come into the Park, since we may not really know who they are. Even so, I believe
Oakwood Manor is “safe”, but don’t be complacent and always report any suspicious activity.
Thrifty - Our association fees are a bargain. And, our fees take care of cable TV, lawn
mowing, the pool, the hot tub, employee salaries, etc, etc, etc.
Vote - Each of us have the ability to shape
Oakwood Manor by voting for the Board members who we think best represent our vision for

the Park. We can also shape Oakwood Manor by participating in the monthly meetings
and by voting at our Annual Board meeting.
Simple - Living in Oakwood Manor is easy. If
one keeps the shrubs trimmed, weeds pulled
and power washes as needed, our Park Manager is quite happy. We all redecorate the inside of out homes to suit our individual
tastes. And, there are a number of Park residents you can hire to do almost anything you
want.
Beautiful - I’ve come to take it for granted, but
if I pay attention when I drive into the Park I’m
always amazed how beautiful it looks, especially at night. Dennis has done a great job
focusing on beautifying the Park with numerous pretty flowers and shrubs.
Convenient - Not only are we in the Sunshine
State, but we’re only 2 miles from the ocean,
and 3 miles from I-75. We’re less than 20
minutes from some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. And, we’re a short drive from all
kinds of shopping, golf courses, hundreds of
places to eat with fantastic views, theaters and
other attractions.
Accessibility - Some of us can’t sprint like we
used to, but it’s pretty easy to get around the
Park. No matter your mode of transportation
you can get almost anywhere in Oakwood
Manor.
Activities - What could I say you don’t already
know?
Friends - We can make friends by walking
down the street, going to the pool, or attending
any one of the ongoing social events
Oakwood Manor offers.

BOOK WORM NEWS
By Joan Kaye & Ginny Wilcox
O
ur selection for March was, "Devil in
the White City" by Erik Larson. We
learned almost everything [ want to or not ]
about the Chicago World Fair of 1883, Landscape artist Frederick Law Olmsted, Buffalo
Bill and the dreadful H.H.Holmes. There was
much to discuss, and the majority opinion was
that we would recommend the book. If you're
looking for something really different add
"Devil in the White City" to your summer reading list.
Next month will be our last meeting for the
season. We'll meet at the clubhouse Friday
April 17 at 1:00 PM to discuss "Orphan Train"
by Christina Baker Kline. We'll have our reading list for next year then. Try as we may to
reserve the books well in advance, at times
other book clubs are competing for the same
titles and sometimes, we have to make a substitution. We were lucky this year and were
able to get all of our selections when we wanted them.
For "Bookies" who are travelling back North
soon, have a safe and easy trip. For those
staying here, keep cool in the pool. And to all,
happy summertime reading.

job well done.

Fun - I have loads of fun in Oakwood Manor. And, It’s all due to the friends I have in the
Park. I knew none of these people until I
came to Oakwood Manor.
VALENTINES FOR VETERANS
Volunteers - I always enjoy public events like
dances, or private events, like card parties. Whether I go to a public party or a private party somebody at Oakwood Manor has
volunteered and made a special effort so others can enjoy themselves. And, that’s what
life is all about.
hanks to all 25 volunteers who came
to help make 200 Valentines for Veterans. They were taken to Bay Pines in St.

You never really leave a place
you love. Part of it you take with
you, leaving a part of yourself
behind.
The shuffle club is donating to OAKWOOD
MANOR a beautiful crafted show case, which
was built by one of our own, Art Bugelli. It is a
beautiful piece of furniture, and in case you
haven’t noticed, we even have trophies to display. Beth Reeves rescued two trophies from
past teams and they are polished and on display for all to see. We have added the new
trophies, along with the team picture from this

S
ometimes in doing these interviews, it is
somewhat difficult to get around to all
the "new" people that have moved into our
park. This is the case of the couple featured in
this month's article. It seems they "fell through
the cracks." To correct this, I was very happy
to do this interview so everyone can get to
know them.
I am referring to Jim Crowl and Heidi McDannald. They moved into this park in 2013. They
have made great friends & wonderful strides in
the couple of years they have been here.
They live at 3220 Aspen and are permanent
residents here. Many of you know Heidi for
working & helping out in our kitchen; many of
you know Jim because he is now one of our
board members. They are the very epitome of
what we need here in Oakwood Manor, willing
to give their time & efforts to make this a better
place.
Jim & Heidi visited friends here & chose this
place from the way it looked so inviting. Jim &
Heidi hail from Sunbury, Ohio. Jim graduated
from Ohio State & taught school for thirteen
years, Besides serving on the board, he does
many construction projects for our park. Heidi
has various hobbies, but lists travelling as being very important to her. Jim plays shortstop
when he is playing softball.
Jim has three children & seven grandchildren
& Heidi has one child. They both enjoy several
restaurants & named Ale House, Geckos, Joey
D's & Yummy's as some of their favorite ones.
Please get to know this fine couple, if you don't
already. Both of them are a credit to Oakwood
Manor & we are delighted to have them.

A committee was formed and now our project
has gone full speed ahead. At recent activities
forms were passed out and checks signed and
turned in. While the original suggestion was for
memorial bricks, the project is now open to any
and all participants.
On March 25 an order for 66 bricks was submitted to Polar Engraving in Naples, FL. The
cost of each brick is $50 ($56 if clipart is desired). We should receive our completed bricks
early in April and some volunteers will install
them around the gazebo in two rows. We are
excited about this new venture and the response we have received.
If you have not had an opportunity to order a
brick, contact Sharon Rump for information.
This will be an ongoing venture.

and I would like to thank all who donated, helped with setup and manned the

We cleared $575.50 which included a cash
donation.
The program for February lead by Jerry Cefola
was very interesting. He showed how you can
use the internet to learn all sorts of things with
YouTube being a source of information on a
multitude of subjects. We learned how to make
a earthtainer to grow tomato plants with little
tending. Thank you Jerry for sharing.
In March our own Professor Marcia Berkey will
talk to us on Capturing your story digitally…..This demonstration shares methods of
wonderful ways to capture the story of your life
or the lives of your loved ones. We will look at
ways to capture, tag, and do simple editing of
photos. Using photos in different software programs will also be covered along with ideas on
ways to capture and use audio files and movies. Resources will be shared on converting
hardcopy photos and memorabilia to digital
formats, digital scrapbooking/memory keeping
and some of the photo/story products available
(like photo books, blankets, playing cards,
etc). What’s your story and how might you
share it?
Our labs are beginning to slowly shut down.
Some of our volunteers are heading back to
their northern homes. We are looking for volunteers to staff the lab for an hour or two on a
time that would fit into your schedule. If you
can help us out, please call Sharon Rump.
