Board President’s Report
Spring has finally sprung!
Finally, with green replacing white, there are signs that
we may actually have a spring. This is one winter where we
particularly owe our Public Works Department a vote of
thanks for their excellent work in keeping us safe and mobile.
In the spirit of this season of change there are several
ways in which the OPA Board and General Manager have
moved in a different direction.

The $12 assessment increase in the recently
approved budget may appear to be “business as
usual” however; some of the underlying rationale
is different. The “five-year plan” is gone and the
$130 collected under it will be used to reduce
or eliminate current deficits across all reserves.
Future funding of major capital assets will only
resume for Board-approved projects whose
requirements were developed under the Capital
Improvement Plan (CIP). The Board also
approved a Fire Department request to increase
EMS coverage, thereby allowing simultaneous
runs with qualified personnel. This could be a
life-saving addition for some members.
Management of the Yacht Club and the Golf
Course will change early this summer. During
the winter the Cove provided a warm place to have fun for a lot of people
who couldn’t go south for the winter. But, we are still trying to wrap our arms
around operating the new facility in a way that will keep off-season losses to
a reasonable level. A new Golf course management company was selected to
change our current direction by focusing more on increased membership and
community play. To be honest we can’t be certain how well this will work, but we
won’t find out without trying.
The Capital Improvement Plan effort is progressing with an inventory of existing
documentation (e.g., engineering reports, use studies) relevant to establishing
requirements for future major projects. These cover a very broad range of needs
from critical infrastructure to facilities, with proposed solutions that may include
renovation, replacement or increased maintenance. The Board has approved a reserve
study to support the requirements development effort and additional studies and
analyses may be needed as well. It is intended that in the future all major capital
projects have a Board-approved requirement before it appears in a budget.
At this point in time our General Manager is faced with the daunting job of
completing numerous projects such as the Mumford’s pool and the Marina boat
dock in time for the season opening. We are confident that he and his very capable
staff are up to the challenge.

As winter FINALLY comes to a close, we begin our focus
on the spring and summer seasons. While we begin to focus
on all the great things happening, I want to take a moment to
thank our Public Works and Police Departments for all their
efforts keeping our roadways clear and our community safe
during the unusually high number of snow events this winter.
With nearly 70 miles of roads and over 7500 properties our
teams continue to do outstanding work for all of us!
YACHT CLUB

While I was very proud of all the efforts on everyone’s part to get the new Yacht
Club open on time last year, the challenging winter during last year’s construction
pushed us right up to our goal of being open for Memorial Day! That timing created
some challenges rolling into last spring and summer. While we still don’t have a
full year under our belt, we certainly have learned a lot over our brief 10 months
of operations. These lessons
learned will not only better
prepare us for the upcoming
spring and summer seasons,
it will help us make better
decisions moving into the
fall and winter as well.
The combination of many
things large and small
will dramatically improve
efficiencies.
Whether
it was learning how to
operate the heating and
cooling system, efficient
bar stocking, to working the new MICROS System, many things had to be
learned on the go. Improvements have been made to our kitchen and dining
room flow to restocking inventory. The size and scope of the new facility has
also created other operational challenges balancing between day to day dining
offerings to full-scale catering opportunities. Our team has learned a great deal
over the last 10 months. These are only a few of the lessons learned after opening
the new facility, that will help propel us to better overall performance moving
forward in service, consistency and financial results. I also want to be sure to
point out the outstanding job Lynda Huettner did this fall and winter managing the
Yacht Club. Her years of success running our Beach Club made a huge difference
over recent months. Her leadership
and ability to work closely with all the
talented staff we have at the club is very
much appreciated. Additionally Lynda is
assisting us to review all the resumes we
received for the YC Manager’s position.
The fuel dock at the Yacht Club is receiving
some upgrades. We have new fuel pumps
being installed on the refurbished dock.
The new pumps will work better, are in compliance with today’s regulations and will

be safer to operate. Our Dock Master Ron Fisher and his
team are already getting ready for a strong summer season. We
will be offering ice, beverages, snacks and other items to make
your boating and fishing this summer more enjoyable.

bayside of the
pool will receive
reinforcement
and the entire pool will have a new surface for the upcoming
season. The Swim and Racquet Club pool is getting a facelift
as well. The entire pool is being resurfaced. In addition we
are adding a snack bar to the facility. We will offer items like
pizza, hotdogs, chips, drinks, etc.. This will certainly add to the
convenience and fun to all those who use this facility.

this year with an annual base assessment of $921. This year’s
assessment includes the continuation of the funding strategy
used to address major capital projects. In addition to all the
amenities, programs, activities and special events we have
continued our focus on maintenance and public safety. For the
second year we have budgeted for a Drainage Team that will
focus their efforts each day on maintaining our 140 miles of
storm water ditches and swales.
As usual we have a whole lot going on this time of year. I
would encourage you to come out and enjoy your amenities or
one of the many new activities and programs we have to offer

White Horse Boat Ramps Replacement - Fisher Marine
began replacement of the boat ramps and piers in White
Horse Park off
Beauchamp
Road. The project
includes
the
replacement of
the two existing
boat
ramps;
replacement
of 3 existing
piers with one
new pier and a
temporary berthing dock (for boats waiting to use the ramps);
installation of a new vinyl bulkhead and the construction
of a concrete pier with a gangway and floating dock. These
improvements will improve access, ease congestion during busy
times and the floating dock will raise and lower with the tide
making launching/loading your vessel much easier. The project
should be complete for the season. Check out progress photos

are due. The Board approved the budget on March 13 and this

OPA Board
OPA BOARD ADOPTS FY 2015-2016 BUDGET
The Ocean Pines Board of Directors approved the
Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2015-2016, which was
modified following presentation to the Membership at the
Public Hearing on February 7, 2015. The FY 2015-2016
Budget reflects Total Revenues of $10,989,329 and Operating
Expenses and Transfers of the same amount, a Basic Annual
Assessment of $921 and Capital Expenditures of $2,111,436.
The 2015-2016 Fiscal Year runs from May 1, 2015 through
April 30, 2016.

Wow! What a winter. I’ve heard estimates
that we on the shore were hit with over a foot
of snow during January and February. That’s
unheard of down here. The bay and river were
frozen for a month and our local plumbers

the Ravens have sent out bills for the coming season; and the
Shorebirds are looking forward to success. So, Spring is just
around the corner and it’s time to inform you of the financial

There has been a great deal of member interest in our negotiations with Sandpiper
Gas for a renewal of our expired Franchise Agreement. This high level of interest
is most likely a direct result of the cost to heat our homes due to the recent record
setting cold streak. Unfortunately there has been very little progress since the last
press release published September 4, 2014 and posted again below. Your Association
continues to be available to discuss a new agreement whenever Sandpiper is ready
to do so.

OPA Search Committee to Host Second Public Meeting
Ocean Pines Association’s 2015 Search Committee will
host an informative public meeting on Wednesday, April 29,
2015 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at the Ocean Pines Community
Center. The meeting will be open to Association Members and
anyone interested in a position on the Board is encouraged to
attend. The purpose will be to outline the function of the Search
Committee, describe the qualifications of the candidates they
search for, outline the responsibilities of OPA Board members,
and receive input from attendees about finding interested
candidates.
The Committee’s function will be to seek at least 4 candidates
to run for the Board of Directors in the next election. To be
eligible a candidate must be the owner of record of property in
Ocean Pines as of January 1st of this year, eligible to vote as of
May 15th and have completed and submitted an application no
later than 5:00pm on May 10, 2015. An application form may
be printed from the Association’s web site www.oceanpines.org
or obtained from a Search Committee member or from the
Administration. If you have any questions, you may contact
any member of the Search Committee or the OPA Office.

The Importance Of Your Vote
Each year, our members have a critical duty to vote for candidates
for the Board of Directors. This group of 7 has a very important
leadership role in our community. They serve the members as a
fiduciary body protecting the community’s common property,
make important capital decisions, and assure the maintenance
and security of our community. As owners and members of
the OPA, we must engage in this selection process with a
thoughtful and serious interest. How does the election of these
candidates affect me? This is an intriguing question. Do the
decisions of this board of seven impact me at my house, on my
street, at the swimming pool, in my favorite park, on the beach,
at the Yacht Club or Country Club, on the greens or as I walk
the paths? What experiences and qualifications do you expect
the candidates for this board to have? Do you want candidates
with new viewpoints? Do you want a candidate who is interested

in the needs of everyone in the community and therefore
welcomes the widest range of input from the property owners?
This Board of Directors has important responsibilities. They
must be serious people who can debate without rancor and be
willing to reach thoughtful compromise. They must be sensitive
to the fees that they charge the owners but they must also protect
the investments of the owners and balance the maintenance
of the amenities. This year, we will elect two candidates. Please
share the passion with the Elections Committee and take
an active interest in this election process. Join us at the Ocean
Pines Candidates’ Forum on Wednesday, June 24, at 6pm in the
Assateague Room at the Community Center. Please VOTE! By
Election Committee: Bill Wentworth (chair), Judy Butler, Cheryll
Bissell, Steve Smith and Frank Danowski .
Police Department
2014 Crime Statistics in Ocean Pines:
Ocean Pines Police have released preliminary crime
statistics for 2014. Serious crime declined nearly 40
percent in 2014 compared to 2013. A review of serious
crime, known as Part 1 Offenses, revealed:
• 2014: 106 Part 1 Offenses
• 2013: 178 Part 1 Offenses
Police answered 12,402 service calls for 2014, which
is a new record. Police also made 193 arrests and
conducted 2,654 traffic stops, resulting in the issuance
of 460 traffic citations. Traffic accidents saw a 23
percent reduction, as a result of increased enforcement.

End of the Year Crime Statistics: 2014
The End of the Year Crime Report for 2014 is now available
for your review on the Ocean Pines Association website. I am
happy to report that Ocean Pines had a DROP in serious crime
of nearly 40 percent during 2014 compared to 2013. This is the
largest crime decrease in my tenure as Police Chief (from 2003).
There are a number of factors which have contributed to this
decrease, and my experience as a Police Chief provides statistics
with caution, some factors we control, other factors are out of
our control. And with every low number, the following year
tends to show increases.
I do believe that our increased enforcement efforts have
shown some positive effort at crime control. Identifying and
arresting criminals puts them out of service, if only temporarily.
Increases in arrests and traffic enforcement tend to reduce some
serious crime. Our community is a very mobile community,
with nearly 70 miles of roads and a very busy Parkway. We
receive numerous complaints of speeding and reckless driving
which we must address. It is important to examine our
traffic statistics to see that there is a very healthy number of
WARNINGS issued, rather than citations. This emphasizes
the need to educate as well as enforce.
Ocean Pines continues to be one of the SAFEST
communities, per capita, in the State of Maryland. Of course,
if you are the victim of a crime in Ocean Pines, these statistics
may not have the degree of significance as it does on other
residents. We are not immune from crime or crime patterns.
Our proactive enforcement is an effort to KEEP Ocean Pines
safe. Towards that end, we ask our residents to report suspicious
activity, and be vigilant. Basic crime prevention efforts, such
as locking your vehicle and securing your home when absent,
make a huge difference in preventing crime opportunities.
Home Improvement Scam Arrest:
A 62-year-old Ocean Pines man was arrested in connection
with a home improvement scam. This individual drove around
the community soliciting alleged home improvements and yard
work. Some work was done, but often residents were asked to
pay up front for work which was later never provided. Residents
should never pay for the total cost of a work project before the
work is completed. Utilize only reputable home improvement
companies, with a proven track record.
Trespass Arrest at Recreation Department:
Police were forced to arrest a 19-year-old resident who was
verbally abusive and refused to follow Recreation guidelines.
He had been warned from previous incidents. Police have a
duty to assist other association employees in keeping our
amenities as a healthy environment for our citizens. Arrests are
only made when absolutely necessary.

native plants that require little in the way
of “artificial” assistance. In prior articles
we have discussed what not to use on your
yards and in your flower gardens and have
provided alternatives to harsh pesticides
and fertilizers (vinegar and coffee grounds/
eggshells respectively).

butterflies, birds and friendly bugs. All the thinking is
done for us – we just need to get our hands a little dirty
and what fun is that!! So, check the local newspapers and
the organizations’ and OP’s websites for info on upcoming
plant sales. If you miss this year’s sales, you will have time
to study the above-mentioned sites and plan for next
year. While deciding which plants to buy remember to

Normandy Flag Raised at the Yacht Club
It was a wonderful day to raise the first flag at the Ocean Pines
Yacht Club! This flag has flown 3 times, the first time at the
American Cemetery at Normandy in Sept 6, 2004. It was the
first flag raised at the dedication of the Worcester County
Veterans Memorial at Ocean Pines on May 30, 2005, and ten
years later as the first flag flown over the Ocean Pines Yacht
Club on Saturday, January 10, 2015. D-Day survivor John
Sauer USA, who landed at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, as
a member of the 29th Division, raised the first flag. He was

Veterans Memorial
Ocean Pines Pickleball is entering its second year as an
amenity here in Ocean Pines, and its very rapid growth in
membership numbers is unprecedented, according to the Ocean
Pines membership office. Members have been playing in the
Community Center gym 3 to 4 days a week this winter, and are
now also starting to play outside on the courts at the Racquet
Complex when the weather cooperates. Over the summer,
Pickleball will be played primarily at the outside courts. For

The Worcester County Veterans Memorial indicate that
all is in readiness for the annual Memorial Day ceremony on
Monday, May 25, 2015 at the Memorial site on Route 589
near the South Gate of Ocean Pines. Music, pageantry and
patriotism will be the themes for the day.
Patriotic music will be provided by Randy Lee Ashcraft,
Frank Nanna and the WWIIunes and special music by Todd
Crosby along with the Delmarva Chorus. The ceremony will
begin at 11:00 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Please

Traffic Deaths in Maryland Are the Lowest
Since 1948: A total of 442 people died in traffic
-related incidents in Maryland in 2014, the lowest
number since 1948 and about half the 872 deaths on
Maryland roadways in 1968, the deadliest year on record.
The decline continues a steady, decades-long trend in
Maryland despite motorists driving billions more miles a year and
new distractions such as mobile phones becoming ubiquitous.
There were 643 deaths in 2004 and 466 deaths in 2013.
The drop, announced by state transportation officials in
Annapolis, included a substantial dip in fatalities related to drunken
and impaired driving, which dropped to 133 in 2014 from 152 in
2013 and a five-year average of 171 from 2009 to 2013.
I realize there are times when residents question the need
for increased traffic enforcement, but these statistics should
give comfort to the fact that our efforts do make a difference.
Stricter drunk driving laws and an increase in cab and bus
service as an alternative to driving have all helped make our
community a safer place. Last year saw a 23 percent decrease
in traffic accidents in Ocean Pines, which may indicate that
increased traffic enforcement contributes to public safety.
Disturbed Individual Threatens Neighborhood:
A 51-year-old Ocean Pines resident was charged by police
with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police received a
citizen complaint on the man who was threatening his neighbors
with a baseball bat. When police confronted him, and attempted
to take him into custody, he resisted. Our Officer received
assistance from both the Maryland State Police and the Sheriff ’s
Department. This is a good example of how our Police Mutual
Aid Agreement benefits our community. When we are needed
to assist the State or County in areas surrounding Ocean Pines
(recent bank robbery), we do so. And in this case, when WE need
support inside Ocean Pines, they assist us. In this particular case,
the suspect was later evaluated for mental health issues.
Domestic Assault Arrests:
As the largest year-round residential community in Worcester
County, we often receive domestic disturbance complaints. In
cases where evidence of physical injury occurs, arrests are made.
Since our last Bulletin, police made a total of six (6) domestic
assault arrests. In one domestic case, BOTH parties were
arrested. Maryland law mandates arrests, when certain legal
criteria are met.
Construction Material Theft:
Police charged a 26 year old Ocean Pines man with stealing
lumber from a construction site in Ocean Pines.

Ravens Roost #44, Ocean City, Installs Officers
At the February 12 meeting the 2015 officers of Ravens
Roost #44 were installed. The Roost meets monthly, every
second Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Blue Ox in Ocean City.
Major charities include the awarding of 6 local scholarships to
graduating seniors and supporting the AGH Penguin Swim. The next fund raiser is a dance on April 18, featuring
Tranzfusion, at the Elks Lodge in Ocean City. Tickets are
$25 and can be obtained by calling Ron Apperson, at 302436-4790.
As in every community, police must patrol during inclement
weather. In recent years the department switched over to all
wheel drive Ford Explorers to aid in this process. This has
greatly aided us in keeping police vehicles available to respond
to emergencies and stranded motorists during snow and low
level flooding.
Naloxone Training:
Naloxone is an emergency spray which can be given to
suspected drug overdose individuals. Maryland has had a
recent epidemic in heroin related drug deaths. Over the years,
Ocean Pines had several heroin-related deaths. To improve our
response to emergency overdoses, the entire police department
received training in the administration of Naloxone spray to
an individual who may be overdosing. The Worcester County
Health Department conducted the training through a grant
and issued vouchers for the procurement of Naloxone for each
police officer. This may save lives in our community.
Promotion to Corporal:
After a very competitive promotional process, I am happy
to report that PFC Tish Ottey was promoted to the rank of
Corporal. Tish is a Detective in the department and works very
hard at clearing major and minor criminal cases.

2015 Boat Parade News
GOOD NEWS! Plans are underway for the 2015 Ocean
Pines Boat Club BOAT PARADE. Last year’s parade was
very successful except for the last minute rain that showed up
unexpectedly.
The boat parade will begin this year in North Ocean Pines
at the Swim and Racquet Club. The date is July 25 Saturday
or rain date Sunday July 26. The time the event will start is
12:00pm sharp. Boats that are in the parade should be tied to
the bulk head by 11:30 am.
This year cash awards will be given for Best in Parade;
Best Theme; Best costumes; Best Design; and most active
or mechanical. All commercial and non- commercial entries
are welcome to participate from the Ocean Pines area. Boats
should not be bigger than 26 feet.
There will be a slight charge again this year to cover the
cost of the awards. Individual entries are $10, and commercial
entries are $25 same as last year. The THEME this year is
“Yore” meaning years gone by up to the current times. Some
suggestions are: the middle ages, such as kings and queens;
The Wild Frontier such as Cowboys and Indians; Cars, Planes,
Boats, rocket ships, Bikes, or anything historical. This give you
some good ideals of what you can do.
The awards ceremony will be held at Whitehorse Park
Pavilion at 4pm. All boating participants should remain in
costume until after the awards. The parade committee hopes to
have the return of the honor guard at the starting of the parade at
the Swim and Racquet Club. Also the Kiwanis club will return
to provide refreshments.

Community Anniversary Celebration
The 38th Annual Pine’eer Arts & Crafts Festival & Community
Celebration will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, 9am–3pm at White
Horse Park. Over 100 artisans and crafters from MD, DE,
PA, VA and FL will be there to show their craft and to greet
everyone. We also have food vendors to satisfy your appetite
and quench your thirst. We also have our fabulous homemade
bake sale. Free Parking. The Pine’eer Craft Shop is open in
White Horse Park every Saturday and Sunday. Come out
and see all of our talented crafters. All items are handcrafted.
Also, in partnership with the Ocean Pines Association, we’ll

BJ’s Wholesale Club continues offer in 2015
BJ’s Wholesale Club is once again partnering with the Ocean
Pines Association to bring a special membership offer, effective
April 16-April 30, to benefit the Worcester
County Veterans Memorial at Ocean Pines
Foundation. In addition to offering special
benefits for new and renewing members,
BJ’s will donate $5 of each membership
fee to the foundation. The offer, which is
available to new and renewing members,
is not available for purchase online or at any BJ’s location.
Other benefits include receiving $10 off BJ’s $50 Inner Circle
membership fee or $20 off the $100 Rewards membership fee,
an additional free three months of membership and a free second
membership card for a household member. With this offer, 15
months will be added to the expiration date of a current BJ’s
membership, regardless of when the membership was last renewed.
This special promotion is only offered through Ocean Pines two
times a year. The next promotion will be Oct. 19-Oct. 30. Current
BJ’s members whose memberships will expire before the next
promotional period are encouraged to renew during the spring
offer. BJ’s membership applications are available at the Ocean
Pines Association administration building at 239 Ocean Pkwy. or
online at www.OceanPines.org. Applications must be returned
with payment by April 30.
Sam’s Club to Continue
Membership Offer Through 2015
Sam’s Club will continue to partner with the Ocean
Pines Association through 2015 to bring a special
membership offer to benefit area residents and
the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department.
With the offer, applications for a new or
renewed Sam’s Savings or Sam’s Business $45
annual membership will receive a $10 gift card.
Sam’s Plus members receive a $10 reward for every
$500 spent. Additionally, Sam’s Club will continue to
donate $5 for every application to the Ocean Pines Volunteer
Fire Department. For renewing Sam’s Club members, 12 months
will be added to the current membership expiration date,
regardless of when the membership was last renewed. A free
second membership card for a household member is also included.

We’re Ramping Up For The Season!
The Ocean Pines Recreation Department is looking forward to
summer with lots of great activities, special events, summer camps
and bus trips.
We’re happy to announce the return of MONDAY MOVIES
IN THE PARK! This is a free event every Monday evening from
June 15 to August 31 starting at 8pm in White Horse Park. All
movies will be family-friendly for all ages and will be set up outside.
You’re welcome to bring lawn chairs and snacks. BYOB is also
allowed. Drinks and snacks will also be available for purchase. This
event is open to the public.
Get back in touch with your creative side by taking a zen rock
garden class, learn the art of making wine, jewelry making or the
timeless art of tie dye. Among returning favorites for June are
FAMILY FUN NIGHTS at the Yacht Club Pool on Wednesday
evenings, CONCERTS IN THE PARK on Thursday evenings and
Big Truck Day at Veteran’s Memorial Park. July 4th is Family Day
with a kickoff 5K in the morning and a day of Fun at the Veterans
Memorial Park.
We are pleased to announce that once again this year we will be
selling discount tickets to Jolly Roger Water Park & Amusements,
Regal Cinema and Theme Parks.
Everyone is welcome to attend all or any of the Recreation

Public Works
Road Trimming Complete on Ocean Pines Parkway
Ocean Pines Association contracted with a licensed Tree
expert to trim trees along both sides of Ocean Parkway and
the Median from the North Gate to the entrance to the Point.
The objective was to elevate trees to a height of 15-20 feet and
cut back long, low hanging limbs over the Parkway to improve
esthetics and accessibility for trucks. All material trimmed were
chipped and cleaned up and placed in the Public Works yard.
Additionally, Republic Services customers may place up to
four bags of leaves or yard debris curbside for each scheduled
pickup. This is in addition to regular trash pickup. Trash
collection days for residents south of Route 90 are Tuesday and
Friday. For residents north of Route 90, the collection days are
Monday and Thursday.
Republic will also pick up branches if they are tied in
bundles no longer than 4 feet and weighing no more than 50
pounds. Ocean Pines residents interested in enrolling with
Republic Services should call 410-749-1551.

As you read in our last Green Street column, the Ocean Pines
Environment & Natural Assets Advisory Committee, in
collaboration with the Maryland Coastal Bays Program,
developed a landscaping plan for the Swim and Racquet Club to
include native trees and shrubs which will reduce stormwater
runoff and create shady areas for a park-like venue for
residents to enjoy. The OP Board of Directors
approved the plan and Maryland Coastal Bays was
successful in obtaining a grant through the Maryland
Governor’s Stream Restoration Challenge Award
which permits us to proceed with the landscaping

Ocean Pines Aquatics is geared up to provide all visitors a
fun and positive experience. Our classes and programs
are ready for everyone to register. The calendar is open for
parties and events to be reserved!
We have a few new events and classes that have been added
to our awesome line-up. Aqua Yoga, Aqua Jog and our popular
Junior Lifeguard program is back with more sessions! Stop by
Sports Core Pool on Saturday, May 2nd for our Free open house
from 10-3pm! We will also be hosting our first ever Aquatics
Family Racquet Relay Races a great and fun opportunity to
show the rest of the community your family team work while
enjoying a great time! Bring your princesses or princes out for
our Anna & Elsa tea party and swim!
For the hot summer season, we have an array of fun and
exciting activities at all our pools. Outside swim lessons start
at the end of June at Mumford’s Landing Pool. Shape-ups and
Evening Water Aerobics will move outside for the summer and
Twilight Swims are back at 3 of the 5 pools starting at 4pm.

Jason Pettus with Billy Casper Golf spent two Saturdays
with the Cub Scouts building eastern bluebird nesting boxes
and received a little education about the species. Then at a
later date in March went on a course nature walk and hung
the boxes they made. The project was mutually beneficial for
the Cub Scouts, BCG, and OPA. For the BSA gives them
a project and teaches them about habitat restoration, for the
BCG – helps reach our Aaudobon certification initiative and
for OPA, it attracts and houses eastern blue birds and promotes
the Golf course in a positive environmental light.

Platform tennis players get courts ready for play
Perfect Tournament Weather
Spring arrived just in time, giving Ocean Pines platform
tennis players the perfect tournament weather. Originally the
event was scheduled for the Saturday of February 28th, but
due to the snow it was rescheduled to Saturday, March 21st.
There was a great turn out with forty participants and many
spectators. The players were divided into two teams consisting

were hard fought. Winning by a narrow margin, the Polar Bears
defeated the Black Bears with the final score of 172 to 162.
Between each set the members snacked on homemade
breads, pastries and scones along with fresh fruits and hot
apple cider. A luncheon was held at Alex’s Italian Restaurant
in West Ocean City. Excellent food, terrific service and an
elegant atmosphere helped make this a special event.
A big thanks you to the tournament committee for putting
in many hours of planning and drying the soggy courts for
Saturday morning play. The committee which was co-chaired
by Tom and Beth Hershey consisted of Diane Harris, Linda
Horst, Carlyn Crout and Clive Walker. For anyone interested
in trying the game of platform tennis, call Scott Wheatley at
