LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL The International Association of Lions Clubs was created in 1917 from a dream of Chicagoan Melvin Jones for “business leaders to give something back to their community”. In 1925 the Lions Clubs became “knights of the blind in the crusade against blindness” and assist those people who are blind or visually impaired. The Lions Club has grown to over 46,000 clubs in 208 countries worldwide. Additionally, the Lions Club has been helping many people of all walks of life in meeting the demands of today’s world by providing food, shelter assistance, eye examinations and glasses, hearing examinations and hearing aides, public awareness and education on visual and hearing impairment, fixing up parks, and many other things. FLORIDA LIONS CLUBS There are five districts of Lions Clubs around the State of Florida. In addition to supporting Lions Club International, there are many state projects, which each club supports. Some of those projects are the Conklin Centers for the Blind located in Volusia County and Southeastern Guide Dogs located in Palmetto. The Ocoee Lions Club supports the West Orange Girls Club, Ocoee Little League, Ocoee Bulldogs and the Cheerleaders and the City of Ocoee, to name a few.
