This past weekend was Field Day in North America which is a joint venture with the
American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC). Local
ham radio clubs set up emergency stations powered by generators, batteries, solar
panels, and the like and operate for 24 hours to demonstrate how ham radio can
replace the communications infrastructure in an emergency whether local or nationwide and we have a lot of fun doing it. In rain drenched conditions I was helping my
club, the Peterborough Amateur Radio Club, set up and operate VE3RB and
VE3KRG. You may have heard a lot of us especially if you were DXing between 7.1
and 7.3 MHz. And this coming Wednesday is Canada Day which means the RAC
Canada Day Contest for the 24 hours from midnight. Expect a lot of Canadian and
American hams to take part.
