Fall 2014 was my first semester in college.
I was nervous for multiple reasons and I
didn’t know what to expect. I am sure that
there are many people who feel this way
when they first start college. All I knew
was that I was taking my first step towards
getting a better education. Luckily, CSI
helped calm my anxiety and made me feel
welcome. CSI in Hailey has so many people
who want to see you succeed. We are really fortunate to have amazing professors
who answer any and all questions. The CSI professors are devoted to their students
and we get a lot of one-on-one attention when we need it. At the main office there
are 3 very amazing people; Hallie, Becky, and Sarah. Everything they do is to help improve the environment for the students. They go out of their way to help a student as
much as they can. They really want to see students succeed in whatever they decide
to pursue. If you’re nervous about college like I was, choosing CSI is a great first step.
Not only are you going to do yourself a huge favor, but you are also going to go to
an amazing school that is going to put you first.

ANIMALS
Basic Dog Obedience Boot Camp
This boot camp is for both you and your dog! Spend six weeks developing effective training
techniques and forging a mutually-beneficial relationship between you and your dog. The class will
cover basic commands: sit, down, attention, leave it, stay, and heel (on short and long leads). The
instructor, Barb Williams, graduated from the Animal Behavior College and trains hunting dogs,
search and rescue dogs, and pets. A buckle collar, six-foot leash, 20-30 foot line, and tasty treats
are required for this class. Dogs should have a current vaccination record and should not have fear
or aggression issues with other dogs.

Metal Art: An Introduction to Welding
Step into CSI’s state-of-the-art mobile welding classroom to learn basic welding techniques.
Guided by CSI welding instructor Cody Thornton, you will learn safety procedures and become
familiar with basic welding equipment. You will practice grinding and cutting metal and you will
be introduced to both MIG and stick welding. By the end of the three-evening series, you will have
created your own piece of metal art to take home with you. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt,
closed-toe shoes, and leather gloves. Other safety gear will be provided, along with materials for
the class project.

Mix Media Painting: Still Life, Landscape and Portrait
Learn a variety of artistic media while creating your own original painting. In the first class, you will
see an array of painting examples, begin to envision a project of your own and experiment with
various painting media while observing simple objects. In the second class, you will try different
color combinations to learn basic color theory by creating a still life painting. In the third class, you
will try unusual materials and effects to create a textural landscape painting. In the final class, you
will learn how to paint facial features for a portrait. Beginners are welcome and advance students

COMMUNICATION
Amateur Radio
When all other communication channels fail, HAM radio endures. Armature short-wave radio has
proved to be vital during power outages, natural disasters, and backcountry emergencies. It’s also a
fun way to communicate with people around the world. Joe Yelda will teach the basics of amateur
radio, including how to use and operate different kinds of hand-held radios, how to use the BaldyGalena repeater system, and how to follow regulations and radio etiquette. This class is open to
people who work or volunteer as emergency responders and want to prepare for the FCC licensing
exam (to use airwaves), as well as people who may not even have a radio.

The Room Outside
Want to paint your porch, perk up your patio or plant a vine to trail up your pergola? Enhance
your enjoyment of summer by creating or refreshing that special garden spot with current design
ideas and water wise plant materials. Patti Lindberg, ASID and Mardi Shepherd will use
their combined years of experience in interior design to help you achieve your outdoor room
design goals. Bring your goals to the first meeting at the Community Campus where you’ll commit
your plan to paper and schedule a home visit with the group. On following class evenings, each
participant will get a hands-on learning session addressing the pre-specified problem area outside
of their home with the group.

Sun Valley Summer Spanish Institute
Whether you want to begin your study of the Spanish language or you want to hone more
advanced Spanish skills, the Spanish Institute will help you take your Spanish to the next level.
Each morning (9 a.m. to noon) consists of academic classes (divided into levels from beginning
to advanced) with speaking, listening, reading, and writing practice. Each afternoon
(1:15 to 4:30 p.m.) consists of rotating cultural workshops, grammar clinics, food, and activities.

WOODWORKING
Beginning Woodworking: Trivets
In this hands-on class you will learn how to build 3 attractive trivets: round, oval, and diamond
shaped, with hardwoods of your choosing. The instructor will teach you the layout and machine
set up to complete your project, using tools such as: a table saw, band saw, jointer, drill press,
and sanders. In addition, you will glue, clamp, and apply finish to create your finished product.

Let Them Eat Cupcakes: Beginning Cupcake Decorating
Decorate cupcakes and eat them too! In this hands-on parent/child workshop, you will learn how
to use a variety of tools and techniques to decorate cupcakes. You will get great decorating ideas
for the summer season and get inspired for other special occasions too! Gloria Wieand has more
than 30 years of experience creating extraordinary wedding cakes and other specialty cakes. All
participants will decorate 8 cupcakes to take home. The cupcakes and all supplies will be provided.
Participants should be a minimum of 10 years old and be accompanied by an adult.

The Ancient Art of Origami
Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. A flat square sheet of paper transforms into a
finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Join Mitsuru Brandon, M.F.A., as she
teaches families to transform these delicate pieces of paper into flowers, insects, animals, sail boats and
Ninjas. Families will take their paper sculptures home while also taking with them basic paper folding
techniques for future paper creations. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

STARLAB: A SUMMER SKY GAZING EVENING!
Explore the summer night sky in this amazing portable planetarium. Bring the whole family and join
Scott Slonim, Hemingway Elementary engineering technology teacher, as he takes you on a unique
tour of the stars. You’ll learn to identify a variety of constellations, including Native American and Greek
constellations, and you’ll learn some of the stories behind them. You’ll also learn about the phases of
the moon and get to touch a real shooting star. The evening will end with a laser show and (weather
permitting) an outdoor sky gazing experience! In addition, each participant will get a free pass to visit
the CSI Faulkner Planetarium in Twin Falls, the largest planetarium in Idaho with a state-of-the-art
Digistar 5 full-dome projection system. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

Students aged 9-11 will be introduced to the basics of computer programming by Sam Schrader,
Computer Science Teacher at Wood River High School. Tools such as Scratch, MIT App Inventor, and
Hour of Code resources will be used to engage students where they are at, and help them to build more
skills and abilities in building algorithms. Each student should leave having made multiple projects they
are proud of.

Ants and Plants
Get ready to get dirty in search of fascinating bugs and plants! Kids will embark on a series of field trips
to explore various natural communities and the creatures that inhabit them. As they visit rivers, forests,
ponds, meadows, and sagebrush areas throughout the Wood River Valley, they will learn about botany,
geology, ecology, and more from beloved local naturalist Ann Christensen. Each child should bring a
sack lunch and appropriate outdoor gear each day. *This class is designed for students entering 2nd-6th grade.

Join us for two hours of artful fun this summer where we’ll be using a variety of media to create
colorful projects. We begin our art time with a warm-up exercise to get the creativity going along
with building fine motor coordination. Next we discuss and look at inspiration for our main project
of the day and then get to work on it. Other art projects, games, and activities are always available
to fill up any extra time that we have or for early finishers. Dress for mess and bring a snack if
you’d like. Instructor: Cassi Griffin
