2) De-Coding Your Client’s Behavior
Christi Jernigan, Director, Oklahoma County Social Services
Do these comments sound familiar to you?
•“That ‘low-income’ client is wearing $200 shoes!” •“Why are the cars in the client parking lot nicer than the cars in the
staff parking lot?”
•“I just overheard that client talking about blowing her money at the
casino last night. Why didn’t she use that money for what she needed?” We try so hard to serve with an open heart, but it can be very discouraging
to feel as though you are serving people who are using what money they have
to get the things they want, then coming to your agency for the things they
need.
The people we are trying to help seem to do the most
illogical things when it comes to their health and their
money. Well, they have their own logic – sometimes we
just need a secret de-coder ring to understand it! Having more insight into your clients can be very helpful in
working with them more effectively, and can help keep
staff burnout at bay.
Christi Jernigan is the Director of Oklahoma County
Social Services and has worked in the social services
field for over 24 years. Jonathan Kolarik, RN, MBA
5) Building Your Organization
John Wilguess, OCCA Vice-Chair
Executive Director, Oklahoma Dental Foundation
Many organizations have a Board only because it
is a requirement. What if instead, your organization
intentionally developed a structure for the Board
which created partnerships that enhanced the work
of your clinic? This presentation will present methods
for developing board leadership, enhancing fund
development, and strenghthening the core of your
organization.
In addition to his work at the ODF, JohnWilguess has years of experience in nonprofit management, board development and fundraising for
various organizations including Safe Kids Oklahoma, Oklahoma Christian University and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

Beth Cox Brown, Vice President, Programs
Butterfield Memorial Foundation
The requirements set for Community Health
Center designation or Patient Centered Medical
Home certification quite often seems out of reach
for most smaller or emerging clinics. The Butterfield
Standard of Charitable Care recognition provides a
set of achievable standards that give smaller clinics
a way to strengthen their organization and convey
to the community that they operate at a recognizable level of quality and
professionalism. This session provides indepth details about this program
along with a tour of Good Shepherd Clinic, a Butterfield Standard of
Charitable Care clinic.
Beth Brown has more than 27 years of extensive nonprofit
management and fundraising experience and training. Beth served on
the founding board of the Oklahoma Charitable Clinic Association and
was recently appointed to the board of Christian Community Health
Fellowship.

manufacturers. Learn how to deal
with this and other challenges facing
free clinics and free pharmacies.
