Easter 2015
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Risen Lord:
How changed is the world this Easter morn! How wondrous the truth on the lips of His faithful disciples!
Can there be any chant more beautiful, any news more desired, any heart that could seek for more? Jesus
Christ is Risen! It is true! He is Risen! Alleluia!
The long Lent of human history was ended that first Easter Sunday morn when Mary Magdalen discovered
that the tomb was empty and the body of her beloved Lord was missing. But that body, cruelly put to
death on the tree of Calvary, was not missing. It was transformed! It was glorified! For the Son of God
made man fulfilled His destiny on this earth and so transformed our destiny from sin and death to life in
Him, life eternal.
You and I are the recipients of the long journey of love that Jesus travelled from Galilee to Jerusalem,
from birth in a stable to death on a cross. When Jesus took that sign of death and made it the sign of glory,
He accomplished the will of the Father who so loved the world that He sent His Son not to condemn but to
save the world. And this is the salvation which is ours: Life in Christ Jesus, Life eternal!
My prayer this Easter is that we all with deep faith acknowledge with joy and gratitude that God’s love
triumphed in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and that His resurrection gives us our new destiny: we
share His divine life now and will share it with Him forever in glory! My prayer is that we all participate
in Mass this Easter Sunday as a pledge of our fidelity to Him who died and rose. My prayer is that we
greet one another with that ancient greeting of Christians: Christ is risen! He is truly risen. Alleluia.
If we do that then I am confident we will be renewed in His life and we will be so filled with His Spirit
that we will seek to share His life with others and witness His life to the world. I am confident that we
will be more eager to care for the sick, reach out to the poor, bear one another’s burdens and be true brothers and sisters by prayer and action to all who need us in our parishes, our communities, our nation and the
world. The world needs the witness of our faith in the Risen Christ. The world needs the witness of our
hope for the future. The world needs our love that embraces all those whom our Savior embraced from the
cross. May they too share in the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! For He is Risen. He is
truly risen. Alleluia!

Respect Life Ministry
Catholic End of Life - Church Teaching
Life is Sacred
Human life is sacred, from the first moment of conception to the moment of natural death. Life is a gift from a loving God, and we are stewards of that gift, called to respect and protect it. Euthanasia is an action
or omission which of itself or by intention causes death in order to eliminate suffering. It is therefore a rejection of God’s gift of life.
Life is Eternal
For Catholics, death is not the end but the beginning, the beginning of eternal life with God the
Father. Our faith assures us that we “look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of
the world to come, Amen.”
Ordinary vs. Extraordinary Treatments
While it is never permissible to directly choose to bring about one’s death in order to relieve pain
or suffering, the Catholic Church has never taught that the faithful are required to use all available
means to sustain life. The Church teaches that we are obligated to provide – and to accept – ordinary means of sustaining life. Such treatments are those that offer a reasonable hope of benefit
without excessive burdens. If a particular treatment entails significant burdens that are out of proportion to the expected benefits, it can be termed “extraordinary” and it is optional.
Benefits vs. Burdens
There are many factors that must be considered when making this “burden/benefit” analysis, including the nature of the treatment, the cost, the prognosis, the side effects, the pain, as well as
emotional consequences. Each judgment is unique, and is not a medical judgment, but a moral
judgment. Each patient, or their proxy decision-maker, should pray for guidance and graces, seek
counsel from their family and trusted spiritual adviser, and gather all pertinent information from
the medical professionals.
Nutrition and Hydration
In principle, there is an obligation to provide patients with food and water, including medically
assisted nutrition and hydration such as feeding tubes. At times, however, such tubes may be
deemed excessively burdensome and of little or no benefit, such as when death is imminent and
the body can no longer assimilate the food and water. When nutrition and hydration are withheld
or removed for such reasons, death occurs as a result of the underlying condition, not through starvation or dehydration.
Pain Management
Modern medical care has become increasingly skillful in the area of pain relief. Our Church teaches that patients must be kept as free of pain as possible, so that they may die comfortably. This is
part of our Christian obligation to be charitable and to love our neighbor. Even pain medications
that may indirectly shorten a person’s life are morally permissible, as long as the intent is to alleviate pain and not to hasten death.
“If we acknowledge our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse
us from every wrongdoing.”
~ 1 John 1:9

We come together to pray the Rosary at 7:40am in the Church and the meeting will follow the

It’s not too late to join our next Bereavement Support Group. This is a wonderful opportunity to be

Sunday, April 19 at the Church of St. Lawrence the Martyr in Sayville and on Sunday,
April 26 at the Church of Maria Regina in Seaford. Both litur gies will begin at 2:30pm.
Couples may register for ONE liturgy. Registration forms and complete instructions can be obtained at the Parish Office. Registration must be received by the Office of Worship by
April 6 for the April 19 liturgy and by April 13 for the April 26 liturgy.
There will be additional celebrations in the Fall for those who may find that more convenient. If
you have any questions, you may call 516.678.5800, ext. 207.

Growing with the Gospel
Sharing the Gospel
The tombstone was rolled away. The angel said God
raised Jesus to life. The women came to put spices
on Jesus' body. Now everything changed. They didn't
need their spice jars anymore. They needed to tell
their friends that Jesus was alive. They would all see
Jesus again in Galilee! The women in today's Gospel
were shocked and confused that Easter morning.
You know the whole story, though. You know that
Jesus really is alive. One day we will see him in
heaven, too. Tell your friends the great news. Jesus
is alive!
Mission for the Week
Tell three of your friends that Jesus is alive. Invite them to
come to Mass with you.
Prayer
God, thank
you for
raising Jesus
to life. I can hardly
wait to see him in
heaven.
