art designs
N9
This unit is about planning
and creating individual nail
art designs to suit the client
and occasion. It covers
consulting with the client,
recognising any contraindications, preparing for
the service and creating a
nail art design using a range
of nail art products. The
nail art designs and
techniques covered by this
unit include 3D, embedding,
colour blending, marbling,
painting and alternative tip
shapes.

Nail art design
Evidence requirements
This unit has four
outcomes. As they
are linked, you can
be observed by your
assessor for all four
at the same time.
Outcome 1
Maintain safe and
effective methods
of working when
providing nail art
designs
Outcome 2
Consult, plan and
prepare for the nail
art design
Outcome 3
Apply nail art design
Outcome 4
Provide aftercare
advice
To achieve this unit you must practically
demonstrate in your everyday work that you
have met the standards for planning, designing
and providing nail art to clients.
The standards cover things that you must do
(performance criteria), things that you must
cover (range) and things that you must know.
What you must do
Your assessor will observe you on at least three
separate occasions, one of which must use liquid
and coloured powders or coloured UV gels, using
a minimum of three colours. You must carry out
correctly all the things listed under ‘What you
must do’ on the sign-off sheets that follow.
All the observations must be with real clients in a
salon setting – simulation is not allowed for any
performance evidence within this unit.
Most evidence of your performance will be
gathered from observations made by your
assessor, but you may be required to produce
other evidence to support your performance if
you assessor has not been present.
When carrying out your work, all related health,
safety and hygiene practices must be followed at
all times.
“
When creating your designs,
try to keep them simple, quick
and effective. Complicated
designs that take too long
to complete will not be
commercially viable.

Useful words
Some terms that you will come across in this unit
are explained below.
3D Three dimensional (3D) means that a
structure has depth, width and height.
Airbrushing A nail art technique. A brush is

design.
Colour fade An airbrushing technique, where
an area of colour goes from dark to light and

Consumables An item which cannot be reused,
eg a cotton bud.
Cut out Removing part of a tip, to change the
original shape, to elaborate a design plan.
Embedding A nail art technique where threedimensional designs are created by embedding
decorative items.
Intermediate colour One primary colour
mixed with one secondary colour equals an
intermediate colour.
Palette A board on which the artist dispenses
and mixes colours.
