Carmel Church ~1~ Greetings to the family of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Many people have been asking about the locks on the Chapel side external door. The door will remain open until we close the Chapel for the Paschal Triduum on Holy Thursday. When we open the door on Easter Sunday at 1pm the lock will be set and the Chapel will be locked at 9pm nightly. Anyone who is already on the overnight schedule will be assigned a personal code. However, those who just come for a visit from time to time in the overnight hours can receive a code by contacting the Parish Office. Thank you for spending time in the Chapel and I invite everyone to commit to spending at least one hour per week with our Lord. On the day of the second anniversary of his pontificate, Pope Francis made the major announcement of a jubilee year dedicated to the theme of mercy, beginning on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8. Speaking to pilgrims at a penitential liturgy in St. Peter’s Basilica Friday evening, the Holy Father said the celebration of this “Jubilee of Mercy,” also called an “extraordinary holy year,” will commence with the opening of the holy door of the basilica and conclude on the feast of Christ the King, Nov. 20, 2016. He made the announcement as he opened “24 Hours for the Lord,” a Lenten initiative that invites churches worldwide to remain open for 24 hours today for confession and Eucharistic adoration. ”I am convinced that the whole Church will find in this jubilee the joy needed to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of God, with which all of us are called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time,” Pope Francis said. “From this moment, we entrust this holy year to the Mother of Mercy, that she might turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey.” In his Angelus on Jan. 11, 2015, the Pope stated: “There is so much need of mercy today, and it is important that the lay faithful live it and bring it into different social environments. Go forth! We are living in the age of mercy; this is the age of mercy.” In his 2015 Lenten Message, the Holy Father said, “How greatly I desire that all those places where the Church is present, especially our parishes and our communities, may become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference!” And, at the beginning of 2015, Francis also said: “This is the time of mercy. It is important that the lay faithful live it and bring it into different social environments. Go forth!” The roof is leaking, the roof is leaking! You may have noticed that the Church’s flat roofs (one on each side) are leaking. We are working on getting this fixed so we can proceed with fixing the internal damage which will begin immediately after Easter. If you would like to help with this effort, please address any donations to Church Roof Fund and make sure to put your envelope number on it so we can credit your donation for tax purposes. Thanks for all your support and your continuing generosity. Fifth Sunday Blessings and remember that I love you and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. ~ Fr. Car mel Society was organized March 1926, with 7 women of the parish. It’s an institution of Catholic Women belonging to the Mt. Carmel Parish, devoted to the Blessed Mother and of Christian life, created with an Italian Name: Sorella Della Madonna Del Monte Carmelo. The name gives devotion and respect to Our Lady the Blessed Mother, and the society. Under the spiritual direction of Father Nash, who saw the need of raising money that would provide funds to help to buy necessary things for the Church, held a meeting to think of creative ways to raise funds to support the church and decided to sponsor dinners. Today 89 years later the meetings still open with the prayer of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and close with the recitation of the Rosary. The next Mt. Carmel Society meeting is on Tuesday, April 7th at 7:00pm in the Pete Christopher Room. We are currently looking for new members. What does the Catechism teach us about the importance of reconciling our relationships with God, with others, and with ourselves? In this season of Lent, we focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. May it be our prayer that we continue these important practices throughout the year as we strive to live the way He taught us. This week, we are excited to welcome some special guests as we talk about living with dignity. Instinctively we know that we are created in His image; how do we treat this gift of life that He has freely given us? All high school students are invited to dinner at 5:00 pm, the Life Night at 5:30 pm and Mass at 7:00 pm! Keep an eye out on www.lakelifeteen.com, follow us on Twitter or Instagram and friend us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/lakelifeteen) for information on the many upcoming events this semester! For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede the covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in today’s Gospel passage, Jesus the “new covenant” speaks the language of his “new commandment” of love when he tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self sacrifice to which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our hearts.
