all you have done to make this a successful year. Volunteers can be seen each day in classrooms,
on field trips, assisting with parties, programs and much more. We encourage everyone to take
an active role in your child’s education. Thank you again.

All children in the Hays and surrounding areas (ages 2 to 18) are welcome to eat at the Summer Foodservice Program held at Washington Elementary. There are no income requirements, as
this is a FREE service offered for ALL children who want a good, nutritious breakfast or lunch during
the summer. No enrollment is required, however, if large groups (such as a daycare, camp, etc.)
plan to participate, advanced notification is requested to help staff prepare. There is a small price for
adults who accompany the kids and choose to eat with them, however adults are not required to
stay and/or eat. In last year’s program, almost 5000 lunches were served to community students
and adults, and 2000 breakfasts. All child meals served are reimbursed by federal funds to cover the
costs of food and labor. All schools in USD 489 received menus and information to be either sent
home with the students or hung in various locations around the school, on school websites, in newsletters, etc. Information was also sent to many community organizations and businesses to be posted or sent home with parents.
Any questions regarding the Summer Foodservice Program may be addressed to Jessica Calhoun,
Director of Nutrition Services, [email protected] or 785-623-2400, ext. 115.

From the Principal
Dear O’Loughlin Families,
It is hard to believe we are rapidly approaching the end of the 20142015 school year. The month of May always brings many exciting adventures for our students. This year we are celebrating the end of a wonderful school year with an All-school Awards Assembly on May 15th. The assembly will begin at 8:45 a.m. and will last approximately 30 minutes.
Spelling Bee Champions, O’Loughlin Ambassadors, O’Loughlin Singers and
students earning Accelerated Reader Awards will be honored at this time.
The last day of classes for O’Loughlin students will include our annual
Field Day. A picnic lunch will be served beginning at 11:00 and will be followed by a trip to the Hays Aquatic Park. We hope you will join us for this
special day. For your convenience, a Field Day volunteer form has been
included in this newsletter. Since this is the final day of classes for our
O’Loughlin students, reservations for lunch must be received in the office
by May 12th.
We will end our school year with students on May 15 and will conduct
Parent Teacher Conferences at O’Loughlin on May 18 and 19. Our Parent
Teacher Conferences inform parents of their child’s progress and provide
an opportunity for our teachers to make recommendations for summer
learning activities which support student learning over the summer break.
We look forward to visiting with you during conferences.
Thank you all for the support and kindness you have shared with me
for the past 25 years. O’Loughlin Elementary is truly an amazing learning
community and I am proud to have had this opportunity to share this experience with all of you.
Wishing you a wonderful summer break, Nancy Harman

MAY 2015
Where did the year go? The school year seems to have flown by; I want to take this opportunity to thank you for welcoming me to O’Loughlin this year. It has been a great
pleasure to work with your children every day. I am excited and already planning for
the upcoming school year.
I hope all of you have a relaxing and fun filled summer, below are some fun and inexpensive ways to enjoy even the hottest days of the year.
1. Pack a picnic and head to the park, beat the heat and add a fun twist by having a
breakfast or brunch picnic.
2. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the Hays Public library
3. Cook or bake with your child, it is a grade way to practice fractions with your
fourth and fifth graders.
4. Make a simple scrapbook and write or word process journal
entries.
5. Do some type of community service: litter pick up, volunteering at the humane society, visiting a nursing home and playing checkers with residents (call ahead), and volunteering at a local food pantry are all great options.
I look forward to seeing all of you in August!
