Spitting in the Wind: Art from the End of the Line celebrates the long-standing
friendships of artists Richard Allen Morris (b. 1933), John Baldessari (b. 1931), Bob
Matheny (b. 1929) and Russell Baldwin (1933-2008), and highlights the astonishing
range of work they created while living and working in San Diego. This exhibition
chronicles the story of four long-time friends who also happen to be four of the most
dynamic proponents of contemporary art in San Diego.
As young artists during the 1960s, they frequently saw each other’s work and
participated in the same exhibitions. Their professional relationships frequently
overlapped at this time; they taught in some of the same college art departments and
often shared the same commercial galleries. Despite these connections, their work has
never been explored in a four-person exhibition and the memory of their years together
in San Diego has begun to fade.
To stimulate new conversations about their relationships as artists, friends, and
colleagues, we present works by each artist from the late 1950s to the late 1970s, along
with related historical artifacts. From painting, sculpture, and assemblage, to eventbased works and those focused on text and language, these ideas and objects stand as
vital and historic contributions to contemporary art in San Diego and beyond.
ART AUCTION 2014
Executive Director , Oceanside Museum of Art
Oceanside Museum of Art announced that patrons Rudy and Elizabeth Van
Hunnick will donate $125,000 to benefit the museum’s exhibitions and youth
educational programming, in addition to work designed to raise the caliber of arts
and culture in North County. The Van Hunnicks challenged museum members
and the community at large to join the museum’s ambitious strategic vision and
Rudy and Elizabeth Van Hunnick plan, pledging to match dollar-for-dollar any donation from the community up to
$75,000 and to match dollar-for-dollar any donation generated by the OMA Board of Trustees up to $50,000. The
offer to match donations is good until the end of the year or until the full amount has been raised.

OMA VIEWPOINT
July 5 - November 2, 2014
HOWEVER, OMA is much more than a great building
(with a reputation for great events)! At the core of our
purpose, of course, we exist because of the great art
and artists in our communities and world and because
of our small and very talented staff and volunteer corps
dedicated to researching and presenting the highest
quality exhibitions and educational programs for our
diverse regional population and visitors. Just in the past
year, OMA has added some formidable scholars to our
OMA curatorial team (i.e. Bob Pincus, Dave Hampton,
Peter Frank, James Enos) who are beginning to roll out
exciting projects for OMA audiences over the next few
years, such as OMA’s Spitting in the Wind exhibition
which is currently receiving national/international
attention.
OMA’s ability to hire the best scholars in our region and
present the highest quality of exhibitions and associated
educational programming for youth and adults is one
reason that Rudy and Elizabeth Van Hunnick recently
announced a $125,000 matching challenge donation
to our museum community. This donation/challenge
will support OMA in its mission to be a premier art
museum for the region and leader of arts & culture in
North County San Diego. Many of you have already
responded to the challenge, and we thank you!
OMA possesses a very small, but tremendously talented
and dedicated, team of staff and scholars working very
hard to make long-term impact upon this developing
region and arts community. OMA is the best art
museum in North County San Diego, and if you like
our recent programmatic and leadership initiatives,
we ask that you support us in achieving our vision and
goals. As with our successful building campaign years
ago, we can’t realize our potential of offering top notch
programming inside a phenomenal architectural space
without your support.
PHOTO: CHIP MORTON
This statement is the guiding vision
and interpreted mission at the
core of the team at the Oceanside
Museum of Art and with key arts leaders in Oceanside
and our region. Many of us see a golden and timely
opportunity in front of us right now for the museum
AND our surrounding communities of North County
San Diego and beyond. The museum is growing up
and so are the communities around us – increasingly
prioritizing arts & culture & entertainment in their
economic/downtown development plans.
“Localism” will always be one of the hallmarks of
many communities in our region, including Oceanside.
In fact, it is what gave birth to OMA – mostly local
citizens and community leaders that raised millions
for the vision of an architectural gem of a museum
facility. Now, twenty years later, “regionalism” is on
the rise and OMA is expanding its programmatic talent
and efforts into the region – in addition to exerting its
convening and community-building skills – both in the
downtown Oceanside revitalization efforts and more
regional North County arts community building efforts.
From a long-range view, as goes the regional arts
community’s outreach and engagement with the North
County population of 1.3 million will likely go the
prosperity of most cultural institutions in North County,
including OMA.
This leads me to say: OMA is (and symbolizes)
much more than a fabulous building in downtown
Oceanside.
I never tire of seeing and hearing about people’s
reaction and impression of walking up to Oceanside
Museum of Art for the first time. Thank you very much
to the architects, Irving Gill and Frederick Fisher, and
the many donors and supporters that raised over
$6 million to open our 26,000 sq. ft. museum facility in
2008. There is no doubt that OMA possesses one
of the most beautiful and unique architectural gems
in the entire region.

Oceanside Museum of Art has a long history of exhibiting fiber
art that challenges traditional perceptions of the medium. In
our second hosting of Quilt National, we present a selection
of innovative designs that demonstrate the surprising and
inspiring directions explored by the contemporary craft of quilt
making. Quilt National is a biennial juried exhibition of the
most remarkable and technically excellent international fiber art
organized by the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio. Over 850
images were submitted for this year’s exhibition from 44 states and
17 foreign countries. OMA will be showcasing 32 of the strongest
award-winning quilts selected for this 18th biennial exhibition,
chosen by a jury panel comprised of internationally recognized
quilt makers and artists Linda Colsh (Everberg, Belgium), Judith
Content (Palo Alto, CA), and Penny McMorris (Bowling Green, OH).

CALIFORNIA DREAMING: AN INTERNATIONAL
PORTRAIT OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
NEIL SHIGLEY: INVISIBLE PEOPLE
November 1, 2014 - February 15, 2015
MY SISTER’S VOICE
Striving to spread awareness and tell the stories of the homeless
population in our city, Neil Shigley: Invisible People focuses
on select works Shigley has created which document San
Diego’s homeless, a group often hidden and forgotten. Through
the presented large scale block prints and graphite on paper
works he captures the incredible character that life on the
streets has given these individuals, many of whom are from
his neighborhood near downtown San Diego. These portraits
of “invisible people” show great nobility, beauty, strength and
vulnerability; they are there if we only look. By presenting
these faces on a large scale, we are forced to confront them
and the situation that so many people in our nation are in.
November 1, 2014 - February 8, 2015
Curated By ALEXIS DIXON
Forty large scale black and white photographs present portraits of a culturally
diverse, international and local group of women who demonstrate how deeply
women participate in society at all levels. These women range in age from 18 to 92,
showcasing the courage, wisdom and value of women of all ages in our society and
global discourse. For the good of our shared humanity, the health of our culture,
for society at large, and last but not least, our ability to meet future challenges,
this exhibition asks us to work together; to dismantle artificially built barriers
between the genders and thereby safeguard the continuity of our collective history.
Accompanying these photographs are three-minute video documentaries for each
woman that tells their story with courage and dignity. This collaborative exhibition
was conceptualized by Alexis Dixon and photographed by Pablo Mason.
NAKED: 20TH CENTURY NUDES FROM
THE DIJKSTRA COLLECTION
OMAR LOPEX: RELÁMPAGO
Curated By TARA SMITH
November 8, 2014 - February 8, 2015
Over the past 100 years, the human body has not changed much, but you would
not know that from the diversity of artists’ representations of it. This group of works
spans the 20th century, including figurative paintings, drawings, and photographs
specifically featuring the nude human figure. The female form dominates the
exhibition as the most frequently recurring motif throughout the works, while the
male form provides a quieter presence, illustrating the typical ratio of male to
female nudes throughout art history.
As passionate collectors, the Dijkstras acquired works of art based on personal and
emotional connections with the work they encountered. The result is a strong and
varied collection that began with a first purchase made some thirty years ago, and
has continued into the present with the acquisition of unique work with colorful
histories, collected locally and abroad.
Omar Lopex, 24, 2014, tintype photograph.
Oceanside Museum of Art is proud to present NAKED: 20th Century Nudes from
the Dijkstra Collection, the second exhibition within the Museum’s “Collectors
Initiative” launched in 2012. Opening on November 22, 2014, NAKED is a
revelation. Taken from the wide-ranging art collection of local North county
residents Sandra and Bram Dijkstra, this striking group of works contributes to
the museum-wide focus on artwork concerning figurative and portrait themes
occupying all five exhibition spaces at OMA late Fall.
Omar Lopex, 25, 2014, tintype photograph.
Alexander Brook, Ann (Nude Portrait), c.1935, oil on canvas, 32 x 24 in.
November 22, 2014 - March 8, 2015
Relámpago is Spanish for “lightning”, referring
to the moments of illumination captured directly
on solid metal plates for this exhibition of
Omar Lopex’s intimate tintype photographs. A
photograph documents reality without context:
what appears to be a wide variety of traditional
family portraits exploring different representations
of familial relationships, is in fact a complex
game of pretend. Using a motorcycle specially
outfitted with a darkroom to develop images on
the spot, Lopex visited four different cities to
meet strangers and become a part of their family
for as long as it took to shoot and develop these
images. The resulting small-scale artworks draw
the viewer into a fictional world, challenging the
traditional concepts of identity, personal space,
and familial roles.

EXPLORING ENGAGEMENT ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE SERIES
OMA is pleased to announce that Artist Alliance
will be a regular exhibitor at the OMA/Herbert B.
Turner Galleries, Southfair. Partnering quarterly
with San Diego artist groups and organizations, the
Turner Galleries will exhibit these juried exhibitions
throughout the year.
Supported by a grant by the James Irvine Foundation, OMA is launching the second of a series of five
interactive and public artist-in-residency projects throughout this summer and into early fall carried out in
non-traditional off-site locations throughout San Diego County with an emphasis in North County. These
projects encourage risk-taking residencies by regional contemporary artists and/or artist collaboratives with
high levels of public engagement and public art making. With this residency series OMA strives to blur the
lines between art and life through the process of active participation vs. passive observation. Projects will be
created by emerging artists as well as those who are prominent and established, directed by James A. Enos
along with institutional collaborator Dinah Poellnitz of The Hill Street Country Club. Artist projects already
underway will include the production of newly involved works with a military emphasis from the likes of
Geoffrey Cunningham, Claudia Cano, Mark Jesinoski, and Charles G. Miller.
If you are an artist, please consider joining OMA’s
Artist Alliance to be a part of these exciting
exhibition opportunities. The cost is only $20 in
addition to any level of OMA membership. Visit

April 2014 – January 2015
OMA and Jefferson Middle School in Oceanside are part of a collective exhibition at the San
Diego International Airport, titled Coverg(ing)enuities. They are one of twelve different artists and
organizations chosen by the airport curators for an exhibition inspired by the creative intersection
of art, science, and technology. This is a year-long exhibition intended to create an imaginative
and interactive experience for airport passengers.
Students created a thematic patchwork quilt as a unique way to stitch together the ideas of art,
science, and technology. The imagery painted by the students reflects how science and technology
impact their daily lives. The exhibition is located in Terminal 2 pre-security next to baggage claim.

made in prayer for my best friend Kelly, who has been
battling cancer for the second time. Two flickers, symbolizing
healing, love, new rhythm, and the circle of growth, work
faithfully together in mending the lesions that doctors found
on her rib, scapula, hip, sacrum, and in multiple vertebrae.
During her fight, doctors have marveled at her recovery rate.
A true testament to how enduring love, strong community
support, great faith, and unwavering hope can move the
human spirit and body to healing.” For more info visit

FALL FUNDRAISER
MEGA EXHIBITION RECEPTION
July 26, 2014
The evening began with a beautiful rainbow and ended with a big “pot of gold” for OMA! It was
a beautiful balmy evening on Saturday, July 26 as the 20th Anniversary Museum Ball guests sipped
champagne and cocktails, dined on exquisite cuisine and then danced under a twilight evening at
the Oceanside Civic Center Plaza. According to most long-standing attendees, it was the museum’s
best fundraising event ever in terms of festivities, gaiety, and results. Particular thanks to Rudy and
Elizabeth Van Hunnick for their generous announcement to match all OMA supporters dollar-fordollar – producing a net profit of $123,000 from the overall fundraiser event. Thank you with much
appreciation to The Museum Ball sponsors, donors, guests, the Ball Committee, OMA staff and
volunteers that made this evening one not to forget!
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, July 25, 2015 and plan on joining us next year!

DINNER OF DISTINCTION
A LOOK BACK: PATRON PARTY
October 10, 2014, 6:30-9:30pm
May 28, 2014
The OMA Board of Trustees will host this sophisticated annual dinner at the museum to honor and
celebrate the Founder’s Circle and Millennium Club members for their generous contributions to the
museum. This year Executive Director, Daniel Foster and Board President, Cheryl Weiner will present
the revered Medal of Distinction to four members of the community who have been great supporters
of OMA throughout the years.
The annual Patron Party is hosted by
OMA Board of Trustees and Membership
Committee. This event is held to show
our appreciation for the generous support
from our Patron members and above.
2014 Medal of Distinction Honorees
Originally scheduled for May 15, OMA
decided to reschedule due to the vast
impact of the North County wild fires on
May 14 and 15. The museum sought to
pay respect to those affected by the fires
and the museum was able to properly
thank our members two weeks later.
Carolyn Mickelson
SANDRA CHANIS
Sandra, an accomplished sculptor in her own right, is passionate about art and became involved with
OMA in the founding years. Starting in 1996, Sandra was a member of the Board of Trustees on two
different occasions, for a total of 12 years. During her board tenure she served as President in 2001,
2002 and 2008. Sandra has been involved in numerous committees, including acting as Co-Chair
for the Capital Campaign Committee and Chair of the Membership and Museum Ball Committees as
well as recently spearheading OMA’s Art Auctions, 2013 and 2014. Sandra’s efforts have helped OMA
become the thriving organization it is today.
SANDRA KEMPTER
Sandra provided great leadership and direction to OMA as a member of the Board of Trustees during
its expansion period, serving as the Board President for 2 years, 2006-2007. Previously, Sandra
served as Board Vice-President and was also an active member of the Special Events and Fundraising
Committees. As the Chair of the Development Committee for many years, Sandra fostered creative
fundraising ideas and events. In 2004 she spearheaded the very first OMA Art Auction by serving as
Co-Chair. This was a very successful event, earning over $65,000 in profit to OMA.
CAROLYN MICKELSON
Carolyn has dedicated so much of herself to OMA. It was her dream that the museum would
become a cultural destination as well as an art museum. Carolyn was a member of the OMA Board
of Trustees, serving as both Vice-President and President (2011-12). She chaired the Membership
and Development committees and served on numerous other committees. Over the years, Carolyn
designed and contributed numerous graphics for OMA and ultimately helped to develop the branding
guide for graphic standards for OMA. Her passion for the arts in the community led Carolyn to go
beyond OMA and serve as Chair of the Oceanside Arts Commission as well as a member of the Board
of OCAF.
MARY ROMBOTIS
Mary fell in love with the museum in 1998 and has given her heart and soul ever since. Mary served
as a member of the Board of Trustees for a total of 9 years, acting as President for 3 years (2002-2004).
Throughout the years Mary has actively participated in various museum committees, including Capital
Campaign, Development, Membership, Special Events and assumed additional leadership roles such
as Chair for the Nominations, The Museum Ball and OMA Travel Committees. Most recently, Mary
has been responsible for the planning and execution of the annual Dinner of Distinction fall event
as the Founders Circle Liaison. Additionally, Mary has contributed significant leadership support and
leadership to the OMA Board and staff.

If you are a new member of OMA be
sure not to miss our next New Member
Reception! You will have the chance
to meet other new members, long time
members, learn more about volunteer
opportunities, and participate in a guided
tour by our trained museum docents.
This quarterly event is a benefit all OMA
members are welcome to experience.
All in attendance on May 28 were able to recognize the tremendous effort of our local firefighters
and presented four firefighters from Station 1 with a handmade mosaic crafted by 5th grade
students from Oceanside. The special presentation for the evening was words from the well-loved
artist, James Hubbell. He spoke of his history with OMA and the recent addition to the museum’s
collection, OPUS, which is currently installed on the museum’s front terrace. Bram Dijkstra also
gave a very scholarly and heartfelt interpretation of Hubbell’s sculpture, which was enjoyed by all.
Mary Rombotis
The Medal of Distinction is the highest honor Oceanside Museum of Art Board of Trustees can
bestow on members who have made significant voluntary and/or financial contributions to OMA.
This has been a banner year for the museum and we are very proud of our accomplishments and
growth. However, we couldn’t have come this far without years of hard work, commitment and
dedication from our 2014 Medal of Distinction honorees. It is with our deepest appreciation that
these special individuals will be awarded the Medals of Distinction for Volunteerism at this year’s
annual Dinner of Distinction on Friday, October 10.
NEW MEMBER RECEPTION
NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
OMA would like to welcome a recent
new member and artist, Jeanne Dunn.
She has a long history of attending
OMA’s exhibitions when there
was “a total of two gallery spaces
plus a gift shop.” She admired and
became inspired by OMA’s ability
to transform a space with limitations
and appreciated the showcase of
local artists’ work as well as local
collections. Jeanne mentioned she,
“decided to join OMA because after
years of coming here it became very
clear how each members’ support
makes a difference, and I like to
support things I believe in. As an
artist myself I appreciate being able
to spend time with the work of other
artists I know or have heard of, and
also I love learning about creative
practices out there that are completely
new to me. This place is fun to visit.
Your contemporary building with its
two floors of galleries and expanding
staff has proven to be a brilliant move
forward: OMA feels like a progressive
place that’s on the move. It’s the
excellent and varied programming
and the friendly staff, volunteers and
docents that make this museum ‘have
a life’. So to sum up why I joined, I
just came to a point where I thought,
well, it’s about time that I support this
place that I so enjoy visiting!”
