additional rehearsals or, if necessary, to withdraw from the Academy.
PHOTO
Please send a photo of yourself AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that we can include it in the
annual SFYCA directory. Photos may be emailed to [email protected] (jpg, 300dpi resolution
please).
UNIVERSITY OF OREGON CREDIT
University of Oregon credit for participation in the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy is
available for $130 for two credits from the University of Oregon.
PLEASE NOTE: YOU MUST REGISTER PRIOR TO THE START OF THE SFYCA PROGRAM
IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDITS.
3
To register on-line, please enter the following URL into your browser:
http://academicextension.uoregon.edu/course_desc.php?CourseKey=761522
After the end of summer term, you will be sent an identification number from the University of
Oregon. To obtain a transcript, contact the UO Office of the Registrar, provide your ID number
and request an unofficial transcript. The OBF/SFYCA office is unable to request the transcripts
for you.
WHAT TO PACK:
• Bring comfortable clothes for classes and rehearsals, and loose clothing for movement
class, which is held each morning. A jacket or sweatshirt for our cool mornings and
evenings is also a good idea.
• You will need several dressy outfits (such as what you might wear to church or a nice
dinner) to wear to the concert hall for the concerts that you will be attending. Please, no
denim, bare midriffs, spaghetti straps, skin-tight pants or very short skirts.
• Performance dress: Please see the performance dress section below.
• Bring good walking shoes! We can’t emphasize this point enough. You will often walk a
couple of miles during a normal day.
• A rain jacket is also advisable, as we typically get one or two showery days during the
course of your stay.
• A small personal fan for the dorm room is often appreciated but not required
• Spending money: you will only need a small amount of spending money for laundry
facilities and for small incidentals. There will not be a lot of free time for shopping.
• Towel and washcloth, personal care items and hand soap. If you forget your towel,
Barnhart Hall charges $2 per person per day.
• Laundry detergent. There are washers and dryers on each floor. A laundry card can be
purchased for $5, and the dryer is free. Irons and ironing boards are also available.
• Water bottle, clearly labeled with your name! (this is actually a requirement )
• Snacks. It can be very helpful to have healthy snacks tucked into your bag for days
when a late lunch or dinner is scheduled. Fruit, nuts, and granola are all great ideas.
• Alarm clock.
• A watch or time piece of some sort; we ask that cell phones be kept in the dorm, so you
will need some way to keep yourself on schedule during the day.
• Any necessary inhalers or allergy medicine. The Southern Willamette Valley requires
adequate preparation by those susceptible to hay fever and similar allergies.
WHAT NOT TO PACK:
• Sleeping bags (against University regulations)
• Bed linen (provided by the University)
• Candles, incense or cigarette lighters (Anything with an open flame is prohibited)
• Skateboards, scooters, bicycles, and roller skates
• Alcohol, drugs or tobacco
• Personal TV’s, computers and video/computer games.
SFYCA PERFORMANCE ATTIRE
• Please see the detailed breakdown later in this packet
4
OPEN MIC NIGHT
The Open Mic Night has become a SFYCA tradition. Rather like a talent show, students are
invited to present, either individually or in groups, a skit of no more than 2 minutes in length
during an evening performance that will be emceed by the Activity Directors. Students who are
interested in participating should come prepared to demonstrate their unique talents.
ON THE HOUSE
On the House is a free noontime concert series produced by the Oregon Bach Festival.
Interested students are invited to come prepared to audition to be part of the On the House
performance for 2015. IF YOU WANT TO AUDITION YOU MUST BRING 2 COPIES OF
YOUR SCORE. This can be the piece that you chose for your SFYCA audition or another piece
that you have been working on. Auditions will be held at the beginning of the program.
Section III - Program Structure
DAILY SCHEDULE
The schedule for the SFYCA is a busy one. BodySinging (Movement) and Vocal Technique
classes begin at 8:30 am, and the students are kept busy with rehearsals (with breaks for lunch
and dinner) until 10:00 pm. To ensure students' safety, and to be sure they get enough rest to
protect their vocal health, there will be a curfew and room check each night. A final schedule
will be sent to you prior to the start of the program.
SUPERVISION
In addition to the Barnhart Hall live-in duty personnel and SFYCA staff members, there will be
eight adult Activity Directors (AD’s) who will stay at Barnhart Hall for the duration of the SFYCA,
and who will accompany the participants to and from rehearsals and concerts.
ROOM ASSIGNMENTS AND ROOM KEYS
Two students will be assigned to a room. You may request a roommate if you both agree to the
assignment. Requests should be made on the Housing and Transportation form which you will
fill out and return no later than May 30.
Rooms for girls will be on one floor of Barnhart Hall; boys on another. Each student will receive
his or her own room key and lanyard. For safety and security reasons, only SFYCA staff will be
given keys to the outside doors. If the room key is lost, the student must pay $30 for a
replacement key. This fee is set by University Housing. If a key is not returned at check-out, it is
assumed to be lost and the student will be billed for the replacement.
FOOD SERVICE
Students will get a computerized meal card when they check-in. Cafeteria service at Barnhart
Hall is all-you-can-eat. Selections include daily vegetarian entrees, salad bar, a variety of main
entrees, desserts, and beverages. If a special diet is required, please notify Zachary Dietz
at the Festival office, 541-346-1320. No one is allowed special access to the front of the
dining hall line, nor may food be removed from the dining hall. Meal service for all SFYCA
participants will begin with lunch on Thursday June 25, and conclude with dinner on
Wednesday, July 8. For those students who need to fly in early and leave late, meal service will
begin with lunch on June 24 and the final meal will be breakfast on July 9.
5
LINENS, TOWELS AND LAUNDRY
Barnhart Hall will provide bed linens, including pillows and blankets. Each room has a private
bath. Students must bring their own towels and washcloths, in addition to personal
toiletries, including soap. There is a $2 per day charge for towel rental. There are washers and
dryers available on each floor, as well as an iron; the washers cost 75 cents per load (paid by a
laundry card) and the dryers are free. Students should bring their own laundry detergent and
money to purchase a laundry card ($5.00).
COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR STUDENT

Phones
Participants are permitted to bring a cell phone; however, cell phones must be left in the
dorm rooms. Cell phones that are taken out of Barnhart Hall will be confiscated and returned
at the end of the day. Activity Directors will have phones in their rooms that can be made
available to students who do not have a cell phone, and will have cell phones with them during
the day in case of emergency. Barnhart Hall is unable to provide room phones for participants.
Section IV - Rules, Regulations and Expectations
PARTICIPATION
Students will be expected to participate fully in all elements of the Academy. SFYCA students
must have parental permission as well as SFYCA staff permission to deviate from the SFYCA
schedule of activities at any time for any reason.
REFUNDS
As indicated by the title, the initial non-refundable deposit is not refundable, for any reason. If a
participant withdraws from SFYCA for personal or medical reasons on or before May 29, tuition
will be repaid, minus the initial deposit ($50). If a participant withdraws from SFYCA after May
29, 50% of the tuition will be refunded.
6
MEDICATION, ILLNESS, OR INJURY
Please provide information on the enclosed Health Form about any prescription medicines that
your student is bringing, with details about dosage and schedule of medication. Minor
emergencies will be handled by a doctor at Eugene Urgent Care, Patterson clinic
(http://www.eugeneurgentcare.com/). Major emergencies will be handled by the Emergency
Room at Eugene’s Sacred Heart Medical Center. Parents are expected to carry their own
medical and dental insurance for their children. All costs for medical treatment are the
responsibility of the parent.
AUTOMOBILES
Vehicle use by students is not allowed during the Academy, both for safety reasons, and
because of limited parking space. Students will walk to most of their classes and rehearsals.
Vans and busses will transport students to and from performances.
VIDEO RECORDING
Unfortunately, there have been instances of unauthorized videos of SFYCA performances and
rehearsals being posted to internet sites. Posting these videos is a strict violation of musician
union agreements and contracts. The Oregon Bach Festival and the Stangeland Family Youth
Choral Academy reserves all recording, videotaping and audio taping rights at all events,
performances, rehearsals and practice sessions. Participants may not use any device to
record, videotape, or audiotape at any event, performance, rehearsal or practice session. This
includes, but is not limited to, the use of cell phones, Blackberries, cameras, video recorders
and similar devices.
RULES AND DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES
When you arrive at the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy, you are joining a community.
In any community, some amount of organization and structure is required to protect the
individual and to promote community spirit and cooperation. We expect you to conform to
certain standards of social and residential life, and to use good common sense at all times.
The Oregon Bach Festival and the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy have established
the following rules to insure the health and safety of all participants. Disciplinary action will be
taken against any student involved in misconduct as described below.
1. There will be no tolerance for the possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, or
intoxicants of any kind. Violation of this policy may result in immediate dismissal
from the SFYCA with no refund of fees paid.
2. There will be no tolerance for possession of weapons, violence or intimidation, theft,
damage or vandalism. Violation of this policy may result in immediate dismissal from
the SFYCA with no refund of fees paid.
3. Disorderly conduct, unreasonable noise, or behavior that results in unreasonable
annoyance will not be tolerated.
4. No SFYCA participant shall leave Barnhart Hall, the University campus, the Hult
Center or any other performance or rehearsal venue except when approved by a
SFYCA administrator.
5. Students will attend all classes, rehearsals and concerts on time and in an
appropriate manner.
6. Verbal abuse, threats or harassment of any kind directed toward SFYCA
participants, staff or Activity Directors is not acceptable. Participants shall not take
part in, or facilitate, discrimination based on race, gender, national origin, ethnicity,
7
age, religion, sexual orientation, disability or handicap. Lewd or rude behavior or use
of obscene language will not be tolerated.
7. Inviting guests not participating in the SFYCA into Barnhart Hall, or entering or
visiting the areas of Barnhart Hall restricted to students of the opposite sex is
prohibited.
8. You are expected to maintain your room in Barnhart Hall in a clean, safe, sanitary
condition. When you check out of your room at the end of the Academy, we expect
you to leave it as you found it, with no damage and with all trash and personal items
removed.
9. A curfew and lights out policy will be enforced by means of a room check performed
each night by the Activity Directors. Participants are expected to be out of the
shower, in bed, with the lights out by 11:00 pm. Cell phone use after that time is
strictly prohibited. Parents, please help your student stay out of trouble by not calling
after 11:00 pm.

Duplication or lending of keys and other access devices; violation of University rules and policies;
interference with University employees; unauthorized or illegal use of telephones (e.g., charging
unauthorized calls to any Institution number); violation of quiet hours; smoking; possessing,
consuming, or furnishing alcoholic beverages in public areas (all State and Federal alcohol laws
are in effect); use, possession, and/or sale of narcotics and dangerous drugs as defined by
local, state and Federal laws; participating in illegal gambling activities in University-owned or
controlled property; possession of firearms, fireworks, firecrackers or dangerous chemicals;

use of University property for commercial purposes or in association with commercial vendors,
without permission from the University; the installation or placement of any equipment, materials,
etc., outside of the room which may be deemed unsightly, dangerous, or otherwise undesirable by
University officials (e.g., outside aerials, clotheslines, bicycles); the repair or storage of motor

unauthorized possession, use or sale of keys to University facilities; unauthorized guests;
interference with fire controls.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION
SFYCA participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to living on
campus. Disciplinary action in response to infractions of the University of Oregon policy or the
Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy rules is left to the discretion of the SFYCA staff and
the Executive Director of the Oregon Bach Festival, who reserve the right to take all actions
considered to be in the best interest of the student and the program. Should any student’s
behavior violate any of the above rules, formal disciplinary action may occur as follows with the
SFYCA staff and the OBF Executive Director maintaining complete discretionary power to
eliminate steps 1 and 2 if it is determined that the infraction warrants that action.
1. In the event of an initial infraction, the following actions may be taken by a SFYCA staff
member or Activity Director: early curfew, parental notification, referral to SFYCA
8
program administrator for further action or, in extreme cases, sheriff notification and
eviction from the residence hall and the SFYCA program.
2. In the event of continued infractions, the student’s actions will be documented in writing
and OBF/SFYCA administrators informed of the infraction. The participant will be
scheduled for a meeting with the Director. After ascertaining the facts of the situation,
the Director will determine whether parental notification, probation and/or expulsion are
warranted. If determined warranted, the Executive Director of the Oregon Bach Festival
will then be consulted for a final decision.
3. In the event of expulsion, the student’s parents or guardian will be contacted to make
arrangements for the student’s safe return home. If SFYCA arranges transportation, the
parent or guardian is expected to reimburse SFYCA in full for all travel costs. Expulsion
is at the absolute discretion of the SFYCA staff and the OBF Executive Director. No
refund of fees or award of college credit will be made to a participant who has been
expelled.
4. Any SFYCA participant found to have violated the rules pertaining to possession or use
of alcohol or drugs, possession of weapons, violence or intimidation, theft, damage or
vandalism shall be immediately expelled upon the first infraction.
