Course Overview
This course is a must for anyone wishing to improve their knowledge and understanding of Smile Design and the planning that goes into cosmetic
dentistry and then immediately put those skills to maximum use by working on phantom heads preparing teeth for various types of crowns and veneers.
This initial introductory course is the start of a longer one year course leading to a postgraduate Certificate in Restorative and Cosmetic Dentistry through
the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry (BARD) and can lead to a postgraduate Diploma and Master of clinical dentistry.

Paul Tipton is an internationally acclaimed Prosthodontist who has worked in private practice for
more than 30 years. He is the founder of Tipton Training Ltd, one of the UK’s leading private dental
training academies and the author of over 100 scientific articles for the dental press. He was
voted in the Top 20 ‘most influential dentists in the UK’ by his peers in Dentistry Magazine in April
2012, the leading Prosthodontist in the poll and was voted in the top 5 dentists in Private Dentistry’s
Elite 20 poll, January 2012.
Professor Tipton qualified from Sheffield University in 1978 and in 1982 opened his own referral
practice in Manchester. He continued to build his skills, studying at Eastman Dental Hospital in
London, where after 2 years of study, he obtained a Masters Degree in Conservative Dentistry in
1989.
In 1989 Professor Tipton started teaching at the University of Manchester’s MSc in Restorative
Dentistry. He is now a lecturer on the MSc programme in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry and
also lectures at Kings College London (LonDEC). His private dental training academy, Tipton
Training, was founded in 1991 and to date over 3000 dentists have completed a one year course
at the Academy.
In 1992, Professor Tipton was awarded an honorary Diploma in General Dental Practice from the
Royal College of Surgeons of England and was appointed a member of the British Dental Association’s Independent Practice Committee. In 1999, he was certified as a Specialist in Prosthodontics
by the General Dental Council.
Professor Tipton is on the editorial board of Private Dentistry Magazine,The Journal of Indian
Prosthodontics Society and Implant Dentistry and is a medical writer and part of the advisory
board at Expert Beauty Magazine and ‘Woman’s’ magazine. He was a founding member and on
the Board of Directors of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and the British Academy of
Cosmetic Dentistry. He is the past president of the British Academy of Implant Dentistry and is
currently the President of the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry. He was recently elected
Fellow of the International Academy of dental Facial Esthetics (IADFE) and Associate Fellow of the
University of Warwick.

Day 1 - Lecture will cover the planning that goes into designing
a smile from photography to diagnostic waxing and preparation
guides through to tooth preparation for all types of porcelain crowns
and veneers including choosing the correct type of ceramic ,
impression techniques , dentine bonding , lab techniques and
cementation protocols and understanding the importance of
Occlusion and how it can make your restorations succeed or fail.
Day 2 - Phantom Head Hands On workshop will cover
tooth preparation concepts in greater detail for all types of All
Ceramic Crowns and PFM preps and will involve the delegates
preparing teeth on the latest Phantom Head simulators , impression
taking techniques and soft tissue control. Limited to 20 attendees
ONLY
Day 3 - Phantom Head Hands On workshop will cover
the latest veneer preparation techniques , from no prep to minimal
prep , conventional , slice and onto 3/4 ceramic crown/veneers
detailing the reasoning behind each preparation and will involve the
delegates preparing teeth for these types of preparations , prototype
restorations and impressions on Phantom Head patient simulators.
