Job Description
TITLE:
Gallery Communicator – Part-time
SCOPE:
Visitor engagement and experience, customer service
REPORTS TO:
Director, Marketing and Development
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To add value to the Otago Museum visitor experience by proactively delivering engaging, relevant and
accurate information programmes, tours, events, activities and presentations to a wide variety of
audiences and stakeholders, in line with the core strategic mission and goals of the Otago Museum.
KEY RESULT AREAS:
This position has a primary responsibility for the delivery of communication and visitor experiences
throughout all Otago Museum galleries.
Visitor Hosting
 Develop an excellent knowledge of all Museum galleries, exhibitions, programmes and services, and
communicate these clearly to Museum visitors
 Maintain a presence in the public areas of the Museum, proactively enhancing visitor experience and
engagement with exhibitions, collections and programmes
 Enhance public awareness of the Museum’s role and responsibilities, and promote the Museum as a
welcoming, relevant and interesting place
Visitor Advocacy
 Proactively suggest changes or improvements to enhance the visitor experience
 Collect visitor feedback and comments, and communicate these effectively through the
approved channels
 Act as the voice of the visitor in discussions relating to all public areas of the Museum
Galleries
 Engage Museum visitors, proactively offering information and assistance, as appropriate
 Deliver tours of the Museum to pre-booked or impromptu groups of visitors
 Develop, implement and deliver gallery-based activities, tours, programmes and presentations that will
enhance the visitor experience
 Evaluate, update and adapt programmes, presentations and activities, as appropriate
 Promote current and future programmes and exhibitions to Museum visitors
 Deliver and assist with visitor programmes and events, as required
 Maintain up-to-date files and statistical data of all presentations, tours and activities, as required
Health and Safety

Be responsible for the safety of Museum visitors

Be familiar with the Museum’s emergency procedures and assist with the safe evacuation of visitors
in the event of any emergency

Identify and actively minimise or eliminate possible dangers to the public and staff in the Museum;
report all hazards through the approved channels

Adhere to the Museum Health and Safety Policy and best practices at all times

Ensure all visitors are cognisant of health and safety requirements and procedures

Assist with health, safety and security systems as required, liaising with the Facilities Manager
Security
 Ensure that a staff presence is maintained in public areas of the Museum to minimise the possibility of
damage or theft
 Be familiar with Museum security systems and ensure that all exhibitions and collection items on
public display are secure
 Maintain radio contact so that extra assistance may be available, if required
Gallery Communicator Team Participation

Undertake administrative tasks as required

Proactively use OM Central and Outlook daily as planning and communication tools, keeping them
up-to-date at all times and forward planning workflow and resource requirements

Keep abreast of developments in Museum Communication, making suggestions that add value

Contribute as an effective member of the Marketing and Development Team and wider
Museum Team

Ensure the Director, Marketing and Development (or their authorised representative) receives
requested reports in agreed formats and timeframes, as required

Responsibly use assets, resources and facilities relating to the work of the division
General

Positively and proactively manage own use of time and resources to achieve individual and
collective goals

Confidently and appropriately manage any resources allocated

Use Museum resources and assets wisely and with care

Represent the Museum professionally in all areas
