The Ubuntu OBSD (Outcome Based Service Delivery) Program at Boyle Street community services is
looking for a professional who is interested in working directly with children and families in North East
Edmonton in a shared practice model with partner agencies and Children’s Services.
Collectively, with Boyle Street as the lead agency, five agencies were recently awarded the Government
of Alberta OBSD contract in North East Edmonton, titled Ubuntu.
Ubuntu will offer a continuum of culturally competent, community-based, family and child centered
services through the networks of trusted service providers and community supports. It is one point of
access to a streamlined set of services that has behind it the richness of five networks – Boyle Street
Community Services, Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, Edmonton Mennonite Centre for
Newcomers, Norwood Child and Family Resource Centre, and Terra Centre for Teen Parents.
JOB PURPOSE:
The position of Home Support Worker is an integral role in the Ubuntu team. The Home Support
Worker is responsible for working with families to help them to manage a household, model parenting
skills, and provide supported access. This role strives to build a family’s capacity with an emphasis on
community and cultural involvement, and works alongside Ubuntu Family Support Workers.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:









Teach and model household management skills, including; education and training pertaining to
home maintenance and cleaning, nutrition and meal planning, grocery shopping, and general
home care
Transport families to appointments, visits, school etc.
Build positive relationships with children, families, the North East Child and Family Services
Neighborhood Office staff, and multi-disciplinary partners to better support families
Contribute to a positive team environment by demonstrating the values of accountability,
reliability, respect, and creativity
Participate in on-call services on a rotation basis
Maintain accurate records, files, and documentation
Connect and support families to access community resources, formal and informal
Support and supervise visits with parents and children ensuring everyone’s safety
Attend and actively participate in internal Ubuntu meetings
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Degree or diploma. Candidates with extensive relevant experience will also be considered.
Skills, Abilities, and Attitudes:










Strong relationship building skills and ability to work as a part of a team
Knowledge of where to access affordable goods and services for the home, and of resources for
children and families in North East Edmonton
Trained to provide home services such as parenting skills, cultural teachings, life skills, etc.
Strength based approach to supervising and motivating families
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs of
children and families
Ability to work with children and families from a range of cultures, additional languages to
English would be an asset
Understanding of early child development
Ability to have difficult but respectful and ultimately constructive conversations with team
members
Ability to work as a part of a team
Ability to maintain boundaries
Experience:









Two or more years working with families and/or children
Understanding of Children and Family services and guiding legislation
Understanding of the Alberta’s Residential Tenancies Act (Landlord-Tenant Act)
Knowledge of and experience with Aboriginal and multicultural communities
Knowledge of and experience working with community resources in North East Edmonton
Knowledge of Early Childhood Development, Toxic Stress, and the Social Determinants of Health
An understanding of poverty, racism, and marginalization and how and why it impacts those we
serve
Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle, please note that transporting families in personal
vehicle is required
A recent (within 6 months) Criminal Record Check, Child Welfare Information System check, and
Drivers Abstract
