Quick Reference Sheet ORGANIZATION SOMALI CENTRE FOR FAMILY SERVICES (SCFS) WHAT IT IS Organization Mandate Somali Centre for Family Services (SCFS) is a broad-based, nonprofit organization that enjoys strong community support and is respected by other service providers and its funders. The Centre was initially established in response to the large influx of Somali newcomers in Canada. Its original mission was to preserve culture and heritage; however, it quickly became apparent that the needs of the community were more in the realm of settlement, integration, and counseling. WHAT THEY PROVIDE Key Programs & Services for Job Seekers PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Contact: Settlement Programs and Outcomes - SCFS offers Immigrant Settlement and Adaptation Programs. These services increase the awareness, knowledge, and skills of the participants. As well, these programs assist newcomers to develop positive attitudes and social skills to improve their quality of life. Participants will achieve their personal goals to settle and integrate into the Canadian society. Services offered: • Orientation Information sessions; Volunteer programs • Workshops on job search programs • English Conversation Groups; Homework Help Program • Canadian Citizenship Study ; Drop-in services and referrals General Inquiries: 613.526.2075 [email protected] Workshops for Youth - Cover a wide range of issues affecting youth today. With seminars on employment, crime prevention, higher education, financial literacy, and CPR training, participants are educated on topics popular with youth. • Employment Workshop - Aids youth in finding part-time and summer employment, resume building and networking. • Youth to Youth Program - SCFS hires youth aged 16 to 21 each summer for two months; youth create and organize activities for at-risk kids while developing leadership and organizational skills. • Higher Education Workshop - Offering post-secondary information sessions for high school students. Networking for Youth (N4Y) - Mentoring program designed to address the gaps young people face in the job market. N4Y particularly supports youth from minority communities and is currently a partnership between Jewish Family Services of Ottawa (JFS) and Somali Centre for Family Services (SCFS). N4Y programs are tailored to meet the career development needs of youth in post-secondary institutions. These services offer both professional networking events and one-on-one mentoring opportunities.
