Again thank you Gail & Nola putting the workshop together. We appreciate members making PGA a fun club to belong too. We have enough money now to pay for perks (WEB; membership shows/awards demonstrators; newsletter; meeting room rent; misc. supplies, etc.). Granted there have been times we haven’t had money. Membership tends to go up and down. I believe 52 members now. If each one of us spread the word & support our officers with the choices they PGA members voted at May meeting whether PGA would consider merging with Rainier League of Arts. RLA members in turn voted to talk with PGA to consider this movement idea this fall. Both clubs are experiencing members getting older/internet challenges/personalities and spreading ourselves thin around to so many worthy groups. Supporting this thought, just read in the News Tribune Karen Benveniste is organizer, co-president of the University Place Historical Society. I appreciated Susan’s comment that she was glad she is an artist. She may have to paint 99 pieces to get one good one. But most of all, she said for us to have a good time. Your paintings are like your children...no favorites, “explore, appreciation and journal”. Bill McEnroe (passed away 3 months ago) was her mentor and much she owed to him. Susan’s handout was informative. After a demo I need something to refer to as I seem to forget much I watched. Since 2004 she has devoted herself fulltime to painting and teaching. She is a signature member of the Northwest Pastel Society. Recently she has received induction into the historical membership society of Women Painters of Washington. Sandy Holder (Washington State Fair Fine Art Arranger ) passed along info regarding “copying another’s art . As of January 1, 1978, under United States Copyright Law, a work is automatically protected by copyright when it is created. “How much of one artist’s work may be copied by another, without the copier getting into trouble?” In short, really there is no formula, no specific amount that may be copied without violating copyright, unless you have received consent (permission). However, there is what is known under the “Fair Use” - Doctrine of the United States Copyright Statue, the principle of “Fair Use”. Although the principle of “Fair Use” is not part of the original Copyright Laws, it does fall under the law in section 107 of the Copyright Law. “Fair Use” is the ability of an individual who is not the owner of a work to limited use oft the copyrighted materials under certain circumstances, such as for educational purposes, works in a public domain, (not having been copyrighted, or after the copyright expired), and using limited portions of a work may not be violating the owner’s copyright. So, if the changes are substantial and creative, this would qualify as a new “Derivative Work.” There is so much to the law that is dynamic and ever changing. Another note many of us have a reference library with subject matter. We may copy something at first but then our own creativeness takes over and the art piece actually becomes our own. If you want to copy someone’s photograph, you must get their permission. Give reference to the photograph on the back of your art piece, they give permission. Better yet have them sign a document giving you permission, plus dated. News Tribune has been good checking whether you can do so or not. They in turn give the photographer your name and he/she will call you. Drew Perine is my favorite News Tribune staff photographer. He captures the “moment”! We are on a 1st name basis. I (Liz) have “copied” 3 of his photographs depicting military Washington State Fair Fine Arts subject matter, using colored pencil. So far I have given one art piece Register online first to the family. I met the wife of the soldier at the recruiting office in between May 4 & August 9 Spanaway.
