Jan Eales
Packington Square resident
The Batten is an exceptional
collection of 1 & 2 bedroom
apartments overlooking the green
at the centre of Packington Square
in the heart of Islington.
Inspired by the legacy of the
Clothworkers’ Company, whose
thread has been woven forever
into the history of this part of
Islington since 1563, the Batten
is named after a key process of
strengthening woven textiles.
Its name also means ‘to thrive and
prosper’, wholly appropriate for
the latest phase of an established
scheme now transforming the
area over 450 years later.

Woven into the
history of Islington
ALREADY ROOTED IN HISTORY,
THE BATTEN MARKS THE
BEGINNING OF A NEW CHAPTER
AT PACKINGTON SQUARE
In 1563, 60 acres of land south of
the Essex Road and north of the
Regent’s Canal was given to the
Clothmaker’s Company, one of
the great twelve Livery Companies
of London. Three centuries later
the St James’ Church close by on
Prebend Street was completed by this
charitable organisation, a final addition
to the then established community
residing within the Packington Estate.
Surrounded by beautiful tree-lined
streets, this beloved church echoes
the area’s spectacular Georgian and
4
Victorian architecture that draws
people to this delightful pocket
of Islington.
The Batten is the latest addition to
this now well-established development
in an unrivalled Islington location.
Perfectly situated a stone’s throw
from Hoxton at it’s borders, well within
sight of the capital’s financial heart, yet
still renowned for its strong sense of
community, it doesn’t take much to see
why this global village has become one
of the most desirable parts of London.

further 162 homes being built, which
will include 82 apartments for private

DANCE, ART, CINEMA & THEATRE
With a leading arts scene there’s
something to appeal to everyone’s

a vibrant character.
From the globally recognised Sadler’s
Wells dance stage to the boundarypushing British and international

cultural credentials.
12
Film lovers will delight at both the
nine-screen Vue cinema and the
famous Screen on the Green which
boasts an iconic neon façade and

For the aspiring artists amongst us,
the Grade II listed Georgian house
in Canonbury Square is home to the
Estorick Collection and definitely worth
a visit. This collection of Italian Futurist
art and sculpture is internationally
