It is essential for a healthy, active lifestyle and we aspire to deliver programs to the girls that engage them in a range of sports and recreational activities that will equip them with the skills for participation in and out of school. A wide variety of learning opportunities focused around cooperation, discipline and respect for self and others are embedded into all curriculum lessons. Diverse opportunities range from team sports, such as basketball, hockey, netball, softball, badminton and volleyball, through to individual pursuits including fitness testing, athletics, cross country, gymnastics, tennis and swimming. House Activities are a compulsory component of Physical Education. Girls compete in traditional sports against other Houses for the Sports’ Cup. The Sports’ Cup is awarded at the end of the year. IGSSA Sport is Interschool sport played after school as part of the IGSSA (Independent Girls’ Schools’ Sports Association) programme. IGSSA was established in 1963. It aims to provide quality, sporting opportunities for students to participate at different levels of competition in the pursuit of a healthy and active lifestyle. MLC actively participates in the IGSSA Competition in weekly sporting fixtures and at the Interschool sports carnivals in a wide variety of sports. The MLC Weekend Netball Club plays on Saturdays at Matthews’ Netball Centre in Jolimont where, depending on your age and your teams’ ability, the times vary. Year 2s have an opportunity to participate in Net Set Go. The Perth Netball Association runs the competition. Uniform Requirements Hats are recommended all year round. In cold weather, girls have the option of wearing the MLC Tracksuit. Please remember to bring a towel and footwear to travel to and from your swimming venue. A rash top is optional. MLC Netball Club Sports’ College Colours College Colours are awarded each term for girls participating in IGSSA sport. In addition to meeting the specific criteria set out below, girls must demonstrate, at all times, behaviour that is consistent with the MLC Values. Middle Years’ Half Colours are awarded in Years 7-9 and embroidered on the Yellow MLC Polo Shirt. Senior Years’ Full Colours are awarded in Years 10-12 and embroidered on the MLC Blazer pocket. Criteria Full Colour Team Sports – A Division IGSSA Teams: • • • • • Participation in an A Division IGSSA Team (excluding Rowing*) throughout the season. This team must finish in top four schools for this sport and student must attend 90 per cent of all games. Attendance at training must be a minimum of 80 per cent. Discretion of the coach will be used in regard to athletes who train externally for elite competition. Display a positive attitude toward team members, opposition and staff. OR Participation during all three Senior Years in an IGSSA Team (any division) for one given sport and has not previously received a Colour for that sport during the three years. Individual Sports: • • • • • Individual sports of Athletics, Cross Country or Swimming. Attendance at training must be a minimum of 80 per cent. Discretion of Head Coach will be used in regard to athletes who train externally for elite competition. Display a positive attitude toward team members, opposition and staff. Athletes must compete at the IGSSA Competition. A points’ tally is applied to the IGSSA competition and athletes must achieve the minimum points allocated. See below: o Athletics – 30 points tallied from a maximum of five individual events and a relay; up to three from track, up to three from field and/or one relay. o Cross Country -– Top 20 finish in the IGSSA competition. o Swimming – 20 points tallied from a maximum of two individual events and one relay. OR Win an A Division event at the IGSSA competition. SWIMMING (Years 7-12) Swimming is a big part of the sporting calendar for Term 1 starting with students competing for points to contribute to their House total in the Interhouse Swimming Carnival. IGSSA Swimming Carnival - Friday 13 March 2015. The selection of the IGSSA Swimming Team is determined on performance at the Interhouse Swimming Carnival, attendance at training and your performance at trials in the lead up to the IGSSA Carnival. Training begins in Term 4. The swim programme recommences in the January school holidays and continues through to Week 6 of Term 1. MLC bathers, House coloured swimming cap for Interhouse Carnival, yellow MLC cap for IGSSA Carnival and goggles. TERM 2 IGSSA School Representation NETBALL OR HOCKEY (Years 7-12) In Term 2 Netball and Hockey as the IGSSA sports. Netball is one of the bigger contingents due to the high interest. Hockey is extremely popular and quite competitive as there are teams throughout Year 7/8, Junior and Senior Years. Trials: Trials will be held in at the end of Term 1 and the start of Term 2. Training: Years 7/8 Monday: 7.00-8.00am Years 9/10 Tuesday: 7.00-8.00am Years 11/12 Monday: 3.30-4.45pm Games: Generally held after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Uniform: Netball: Green MLC skirt, yellow MLC polo shirt, white socks with green trim and predominantly white sports shoes. Hockey: Green MLC skirt, yellow MLC polo shirt, shin pads, mouth guard, yellow socks, Hockey shoes or predominantly white sports shoes. CROSS COUNTRY (Years 7-12) Cross Country aims to suit a wide variety of people and the programme is run parallel with Athletics Training. Cross Country is ideal for girls who enjoy longer distances (1.5-3 kilometres), those taking part in running-based sports and for girls just wanting to get fit. The competition is run on a proper Cross Country course. Dates: Selection: Training: Uniform: Interhouse Cross Country Carnival - Tuesday 24 March 2015 IGSSA Cross Country Carnival - Friday 19 June 2015 The selection of the IGSSA Cross Country team is determined on your performance at the Interhouse Cross Country Carnival, attendance at training and your performance at trials in the lead up to the IGSSA Carnival. Three times a week. Black MLC bike pants, yellow MLC Athletics singlet, white socks with green trim and predominately white sports shoes. ROWING (Years 9-12) Rowing at MLC is a thriving team sport in which every member has an equal role to play. No previous knowledge of the sport is required when students begin rowing in Years 9 or 10. Afraid of early morning starts? Don't be. The girls adapt quickly and many parents car pool. Year 9 rowers train after school and buses take rowers to and from the boat sheds at Aquinas College. All parents of girls who choose rowing as a winter sport are encouraged to join the Rowing Club, which holds events throughout the season. The Rowing season officially begins with an Introduction Evening in Term 1 and runs until the end of Term 2. Training: Regattas: Uniform: Varies depending on the age group Held at Champion Lakes Year 9: Black MLC bike pants, yellow MLC Athletics singlet. Years 10-12: MLC Zoot suit, which can be purchase from Uniform Shop. TERM 3 IGSSA School Representation BASKETBALL OR SOCCER (Years 7-12) The Basketball and Soccer programme runs throughout Term 3. Both Basketball and Soccer are really popular and quite competitive as there are teams throughout Year 7/8, Junior and Senior Years. Trials: Training: Games: Uniform: Trials will be held at the end of Term 2 and start of Term 3. Years 7/8 Monday: 7.00-8.00am Years 9/10 Tuesday: 7.00-8.00am Years 11/12 Monday: 3.30-4.45pm Generally held after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Basketball: Basketball uniforms are supplied for the Senior and Year 9/10 A Teams. All other teams need to wear their green MLC shorts, yellow MLC polo shirt, white socks with green trim and predominately white sports shoes and will be provided with green numbered bibs for the games. Soccer: Green MLC shorts, yellow MLC polo shirt, yellow socks, shin pads, soccer boots or predominately white sports shoes. ATHLETICS (Years 7-12) Athletics, also known as track and field, is a collection of sports events that involve running, throwing and jumping. The Athletics team is more than just Year groups competing; the girls create bonds throughout training. IGSSA Athletics training caters for everyone - girls who are interested in trying Athletics for the first time, girls wanting to increase their personal fitness and those girls wishing to be selected in the IGSSA Athletics team. Dates: Selection: Training: Uniform: Interhouse Athletics Carnival - Friday 24 July 2015 IGSSA Athletics Carnival - Wednesday 9 September 2015. The selection of the IGSSA Athletics team is determined on your performance at the Interhouse Athletics Carnival, attendance at training and your performance at trials in the lead up to the IGSSA Carnival. Three times a week. Track: Black MLC bike pants, yellow MLC Athletics singlet, white socks with green trim and predominantly white sports shoes (track shoes are optional). Field: Green MLC shorts, yellow MLC Polo Shirt, white socks with green trim and predominantly white sports shoes (track shoes are optional). TERM 4 IGSSA SCHOOL REPRESENTATION SOFTBALL (Years 7-11) Softball has a large contingent of girls making up 12 teams. However, the teams vary slightly from the other IGSSA sports as the Year 12s, by this time, have graduated from the College. The Senior teams now consist of Years 10 and 11. Junior Teams will be constructed with Years 7, 8 and 9. Trials: Training: Game: Uniform: Trials will be held at the end of Term 3 and start of Term 4. There will be one training session per week which occurs early in the week, either before or after school. As Term 4 is quite short there are two games played per week, usually on Wednesday and Thursday. Green MLC shorts, yellow MLC polo shirt, yellow MLC cap, white socks with green trim and predominately white sports shoes. Senior A and Junior A teams: As above but with Green Knickerbockers. WATER POLO (Years 7 - 11) Water Polo consists of four teams, two Senior teams, made up of girls in Years 10 and 11, and two Junior teams of girls in Years 7, 8 and 9. Water polo is really popular among the girls as a large number of them play for clubs. Trials: Training: Game: Uniform: Trials will be held at the end of Term 3 and start of Term 4. There will be one training session per week and it will be offsite. Generally held after school on Tuesday. MLC bathers, yellow MLC cap and goggles. SWIMMING TRAINING (Years 7-11) Whether wanting to begin training early or just to get fit in preparation for the following year, MLC offers swimming training throughout October, November and December and the January school holidays in either the MLC or Christ Church Grammar School pools. This programme is a perfect opportunity to gain a look at the standard of the MLC swimming team and work your way to become part of a team that is willing to give its best and represent MLC with great enthusiasm. The programme offers fantastic coaching which leads to amazing improvement. With great success in previous years, MLC would like to invite you to come along and train with the talented and dedicated girls these upcoming holidays. A separate form needs to be filled out and returned to Mr Birch as soon as possible. This form can be picked up from the Meredith Taylor Health and Sports Centre. MLC Sports Awards The MLC Sports Awards are presented to students who display the highest level of sportsmanship, teamwork and skill in each sport, while ensuring they embody the College Values. They are chosen by the coaches and teachers and are presented at the Annual Sports Presentation Evening in Term 4.
