JULY 5-11, 2015 VENTURE SUMMER CAMP Help build the future of Venture Camps at FSR E Elect one of three Curriculum tracks Venture Discovery Powder Horn Camp Come to the Inaugural Falley Scout Reservation Venture Summer Camp for a week beginning July 5th, 2015. We have room for 100 Venturers and Leaders to participate in a three-track summer camp. Each Venturer can elect which curriculum track you want to participate in and within each track you also can elect the elements that fill that track. With the freedom to elect the various element comes a necessity for camp staff to assist with the final makeup of the summer camp experience. Contact us at www.jayhawkcouncil.org at least two months before camp. The three tracks are: 1. Discovery Award Track. Work on the Venturing and Discovery Awards. Includes fun outdoor experiences. 2. Powder Horn Track. Learn about planning high adventure treks. Experience many of the high adventure activities 3. Delaware Adventure Track. This is a crew experience so select this as a crew. Canoe and hike in the wilderness. Earn the 50-miler patch and Kodiak Award. Activities on each track may limit the number of participants as well as require certain prerequisites. Planning your crews experience with the High Adventure camp staff will enable us to make sure we have the staff and other materials in place for you. Schedules will be customized for your activity and camp’s resources. Training courses such as Hunter Education, Introduction of Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC), and Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS). Jayhawkcouncil.org The Venturing Discovery Camp occurs at the same time a Boy Scout Camp Session. The Boy Scouts camp in Camp Jayhawk and the Venturers will camp in Camp Delaware which has separate facilities from the Boy Scout Camp. Among the common venues are the lake waterfront for swimming and boating, the Mabee Lodge dining hall (Camp Delaware has its own dining facility, but because of staffing will probably not be used for dining, though the decision is not yet made.), the climbing center, Project COPE course and part of the Camp Jayhawk shooting sports center since the Camp Delaware shooting sports is primarily a Cub Scout shooting sports range. Below is a description of the venturing camp. 2015 Venturing Discovery Camp Venturing Award, Discovery Award, Powder Horn Training. There are two options when Venturing Discovery Camp at Camp Delaware in Falley Scout Reservation has as one of the options, Powder Horn. It is an opportunity designed to expose Scouting Adults and Youth (14 years or older) to the resources necessary to operate a successful high adventure program for your Venture Crew or Boy Scout Troop. This actionpacked, hands-on outdoor course will provide you with: . An introduction to a variety of resources necessary to provide a robust outdoor program . Knowledge of how to identify local resources and consultants for high adventure activities . Knowledge of the health and safety requirements, as well as the rules and regulations of the Boy Scouts of America as they apply to the outdoor programs. The Powder Horn course will introduce you to many of the following types of activities Backpacking, Communication, Conservation, Cooking, Cycling/Mountain Biking, Emergency Preparedness, Ecology, Equestrian, Expedition Planning, First Aid, Land Navigation, Leave No Trace, Mountaineering, Outdoor Living History, Plants & Wildlife, Project COPE, SCUBA, Shooting Sports, Wilderness Survival, and much more. Each course is unique in which activities are presented, based on availability of local experts and resources. A good fitness level and willingness to participate in the activities is essential to the Powder Horn experience. All participants are encouraged to participate. For any activity in which you may become uncomfortable, you may choose to simply observe. This course is not a total training program to enable the participant to become an expert or even self-sufficient in any aspect of these skills. Most likely, knowledgeable, trained and certified individuals (consultants) will still be needed to help provide a safe and correct outdoor/high adventure program. The second option is to attend the Venturing Discovery course for recently registered Venturers to work on the first two Awards, Venturing and Discovery. This will involve both activities in camp that will be physical activities such as swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and shooting sports, and training activities needed to receive these awards. The Discovery Award requires a Tier 2 high adventure so be prepared for a 2-day backpacking experience and a "walking" training course.
