Attheendoflastterm,PretoriaBoysHighSchoolbidfarewelltoDeputyMasterMarkSmith
ashetookuphisnewpositionasHeadmasterofSouthdownsCollegeatthebeginningof
thisterm.
ThePBHSOBAssociationwouldalsoliketotakethisopportunitytothankMrSmithforhis
commitmentanddedicationtotheschoolandwishhimallofthebestwithhisnewventure.
PretoriaBoysHighSchoolisdelightedtoannouncethatthevacantpositionofDeputy
HeadmasterhasbeenfilledbyMrConPurchase.MrPurchasehastaughtfor24yearsandis
currentlytheseniorDeputyatJeppeBoyswherehehasbeensince2007.Hisprevious
experienceincluded9yearsteachingatAffiesand6yearsatWHPS.
MrPurchaseisafullyqualifiedGeographyteacherandhashadextensiveexperiencein
schoolsporthavingcoachedatAteamandFirstteamlevelinbothrugbyandcricket.The
schoollooksforwardtowelcomingMrPurchaseatthestartofthethirdterm.

Thesteelstructuresthatsupporttheroofsofbothnewwingsarenowcomplete,cladding
willbenext.Thestepstothememorialwall,theplatformbelowthiswallandstaircasesto
themusicteachingroom(abovethestagearea)havebeencast.
Theplasteringofthemusicteachingroomandadjacentstoreroomsiscompletedandthe
excavationofthestorageroombelowthestagehasbeencompleted.Thebrickwallsthat
definethestageareaandthestorageroomarebeingconstructedandthestagecrossbeam
structureisinplace.Therearretainingwallandaccessstaircasearestilltobecast.
TheunderfloordrainagepipesthatwilldrainwaterfromtheMemorialQuadarebeingburied
atpresentandtheoriginalhistoric(1909)woodendoorshavebeenrefurbishedand
reinstalled.Theplasteringofalcoveareasonthegroundfloorandfirstfloorarenow
completedandrooflightingboxesarebeinginstalled.
Theceilingsuspensionstructuresinthebackofthehallarenowinplaceandthewindowson
theeasternandwesternsideofthegalleryhavebeenremovedpendingreplacement.
Anarchedwindowtomatchthe"heritage"windowintheeastwinghasbeeninstalledinthe
correspondingplaceinthewestwing(onlandingofstaircase)andisanicerestorationof
thisfeaturefromtheoriginalbuilding-whichwasremoved,forsomeunaccountablereason,
inthe1960s.
Thedismantlingoftheentiresteeltieredseatingstructureinthegalleryandits
reconstructiononsteelpedestalshasbeencompletedandworkwillcommenceshortlyon
thelowerportion-onthenewgalleryslab.
Thestaffcommonroomwall(whereprojectionroomwasremoved)hasbeenpaintedandthe
accessstaircasesoneithersideofthegalleryarebeingconstructedandfloortoceiling
windowframesarebeingremoved.

AfteracoupleofmonthsoftryingtolocateOldBoysintheNetherlandsandBelgiumregion,
sendingemails,realisingthatmanyoftheemailswerenotinuseanymore,Ihadresponse
fromaround12OldBoys.Somehadmovedotherswereawaywithwork.
FinallywesettheplaninmotiontostartaEuropeOldBoysbasewhichwaslongoverdue.On
Aprilthe18,2015sixofusgatheredinAmterdamatafancyrestaurant,BrasserieHarkema,
namely:PeterPrince1964,BradBenade1996,AdriaanVorster2004,NielsBlommaert2007,
GeorgeDunlop2007,GomolemoSegabutle2008.
Uponmeeting,therewasaninstantbond.SomethingabouthavingbeentoPretoriaBoys
HighSchoolmakesyoufeellikeyoualreadyknoweachother.Theagesrangedbetween25
and70yetyouwouldthinkweallattendedschoolatthesametimeperiod.Newfriendships
wereestablishedandoldonesre-kindled.Reminiscingaboutoldtimesanddiscoveringwhat
eachpersonhasdonesincethen.ImustsaythatIwasingreatcompany!Thiswasadefinite
successaseveryonewaswillingtohelpwiththenextOldBoysgatheringinEurope.
ItwillbeinBelgium,ononeofthefirsttwoSaturdaysinJune,yettobeconfirmed.Thistime
weplanoninvitingallthoseinEurope.WithsixOldBoysallknowingofatleastoneortwo
otherOldBoysinNetherlandsandBelgiumalone,Iamcertainthatmorecancrawloutofthe
woodworksinlargerEurope.
Thereisathreadofbrotherhoodthatrunsthroughallthosewhohavegracedthatawesome
schoolthatwehavecometoknowas"TheSchoolontheHill"-BoysHigh,'Tistherewe
learnedtolive!

ThereisanotherpairofsportingbrotherswhoattendedPBHS,albeitfurtherbackinhistory,
whoareworthyofremembering.
Intheearly1920'sthereweretwobrotherswhowereboardersinRissikHouse.IsaacGold
andMorrisGold(mylateFather).
IsaacGold,born1905inLondonEngland,wasafineathlete.Inathleticsheheldtheschool
recordforthe100yardsrightuntilitwasreplacedbythe100metres.Healsorepresented
theschoolasamemberofthe1stTeamRugbyandtheteamphotohangsinthecorridorsof
theschool.
MorrisGold,born1906inPretoria,wasalsoafinesportsman.Herepresentedtheschoolasa
memberofthe1stTeamCricket.Thisteamphotoalsohangsinthecorridorsoftheschool.In
additionhewasamemberoftheschoolShootingTeamwhichwonanumberoftrophies.
IbelieveashortarticleintheNewsletterwouldappropriatelyhonortheirmemory.

RememberingMrRobRademeyer,Mat ric1960,Mast er1966-2003.
MrRobRademeyerpassedawayunexpectedlylastweek.HetaughtatPBHSfor37yearsand
inhisownwayleftanindeliblemarkonmany.Hiswasnottoshoutandscream,ortomuscle,
hiswaywasgentleandcivilised.Itisforthisthathewillalwaysberemembered.
RuthlessRobRademeyer.ThatwashowIgottoknowhimfirst.Myfather,Mark(Matric1971),
hadnamedacoupleofmastersthatIshouldbeonthelookoutfor,andRuthlessRob
Rademeyerwasoneoftheimportantones.Ittookacoupleofyears,asthesethings
sometimesdo,MrRademeyerwasnotsomeonethatyouweregoingtoencounterona
sportsfield,orevenaccidentally.Orperhapsyouwould,butnotforreasonsthatwouldmake
sensetooneofus.Hewasdifferentinthatwayandsoinsteadoflookingtocoachhewould
tendthelibraryonTuesdayafternoons.
ThisbecamesignificantbecauseitwasherethatIfirstencounteredthelegendthatwasMr
Rademeyer.Hehardlyspoke,mutteringonlywhenabsolutelynecessary,andseemednever
tointervene.IrememberinaboutFormIIIhewastolookafterourclassforaperiod.Oncewe
hadallsettledinhecalledustoorder,whichfailed,thosethatknewhimsimplyignoredhis
callstosilence.Thiswouldsendmostteachersovertheedge.NotMrRademeyer.Noinstead
hischosenweapontosilencetheclasswasashortstory.Hepromptlyplantedhimselfonhis
deskandbeganreading,stoppingatnothing,andseeminglyreadingtohimselfbutforthe
factthathewasreadingaloud.ItwasamesmerisingtaleofthelasttwosmokersinEngland
climbingoutofawindowtoenjoyalastfagtogetherbeforewitheringanddying.Forfortyfiveminuteshehadourunbrokenattention.Itwassomethingofalessonindifferent
approaches.
IntheLibraryononeTuesdayafternoonhewasreadingaTimemagaz ineatthecounter.He
begantochuckletohimselfandsoIwanderedoverandaskedwhatwassoamusing?He
pointedoutanadvert,'thatisallwrong.'Hethentookupapieceofpaperandbeganto
sketchouttheproperstructureandgrammarandhowitshouldbewritten.Confused,Isaid,
'Sir,butthosearehieroglyphics?''Yes,'hesaid,notmissingabeat,'andthey'reallwrong.'
Thefollowingweekhearrivedwiththreevolumesunderhisarmandspentawholeafternoon
givingmealessoninEgyptology.Iwasnevergoingtobefluent,orevenanything
approachingit,butyethetookthetimeandenjoyedtheinterestinanarcanesubject.Mr
Rademeyertrulywasmarvellousinthatway.
Andasforthe'ruthless'bit.Itturnedout,confirmedaftermyfirstencounter,thatitwas
simplyironic.TheonlythingthatwasruthlessaboutMrRademeyerwashissenseofhumour.
Therestofhimwasentirelygentleman.
