THE INTERNET OF THINGS
AVOIDING LEGAL PITFALLS IN EMPLOYMENT LAW
Marion Williams
Gavin Marshall
We live and work in an Internet-connected world
and, increasingly, various Internet-connected
devices are appearing to help us solve countless
problems. Collectively, these devices constitute
“The Internet of Things (IoT).” In this session,
you will learn about IoT, along with how to
deploy plans for connectivity, privacy, security,
and management. Additionally, you will learn
numerous apps and services that can assist you
with specific tasks, without requiring additional
hardware.

workplace. Gavin will discuss the history of
employment law and the Canadian legal culture of
employment. He will identify how to avoid pitfalls by
understanding the potential breaches and liabilities.
He will also discuss consequent liabilities and how to
react promptly in order to minimize liability where a

TAX UPDATE
Tim Duholke
Do you feel that you are not quite up to
date in the ever changing world of tax
cases and legislation? It seems that no
matter how much we read, something
always seems to slip between the
cracks. This presentation will analyze
topical court cases and government
pronouncements in an attempt to fill in
those holes and provide you with insights
to stay on top of the hot topics of the
day.
THE LEADERSHIP BRAIN
Terry Small
Leadership, a critical management skill, is the ability to motivate a group of people toward a common goal. The brain has everything to do with
who we are and what we do, and leadership is all about influencing who we are and what we do. It is important to master the art and science of
leading with the brain in mind. Scientists are gaining greater insights into how the brain interacts with and learns from the environment. Come and
hear what Terry Small, a leader in the field of translating brain research into practice, has to say about brain engagement and learning to lead with
the brain in mind. You will learn how to initiate and lead productive change in your organization; effectively shape and manage team culture; the
number one way to gain attention of every brain in the room; what your PowerPoint presentations really say about you; strategies for overcoming
distraction and maintaining your focus; how to generate enthusiasm and unite disparate personalities; why it’s not about you. The session will be
full of ideas and suggestions that will help you create your own healthy organization.

SOUND ETHICS ARE GOOD BUSINESS
DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE
Nearly half of all employees witness ethical misconduct
every year, and about a third of accounting professionals
feel pressure to compromise their professional
standards. At the same time, more accounting
professionals are being tasked with taking a significant
role in their organizations’ ethics reporting and
monitoring systems. This interactive session will review
key recommendations for reducing your organization’s
risk of being de-railed by misconduct and poor ethical
decision making. You’ll collaborate with your peers on
how to implement these recommendations.
We all encounter people we find difficult
to deal with. If not properly managed,
these situations create stress and
impede progress. This workshop will
provide you with the understanding and
skills to shift from conflict to problem
solving. Specifically, you will learn: the
impact that anger and frustration have
on communication; how to separate
the person from the problem; and to
assertively ask for what you need.
